Takes place after There'll be no wishing in stars

Thunder shook the walls. An eerie purple glow filtered through the thick glass that allowed in some light, but not the weather. The goal was to try and find information, but when they arrived at Sessrumnir, it was just outside the entrance to the Sacred Grove where the Code was housed.

“I’m not sure what to do about Atticus,” he said with a quiet sigh, taking a moment to look somewhat helplessly at his husband. “He says he’s just worried about finals, but…”

He’d woken up at night in tears since finding out about the threat coming for Earth. Lucien had tried staying with him, but it wasn’t until Elliot was asked to come over in the middle of the night that their son was finally able to calm down enough to get some rest.

Atticus had a sensitive soul. Everyday things greatly affected him, so of course knowing the Earth was in danger of being destroyed was heartbreakingly stressful.

Sessrumnir wasn’t willing to take chances, though. He and Valhalla had already ordered supplies that they would take to their Wonders in preparation for Earth’s destruction.

Arriving on Jupiter had Alastor frowning, not because he wasn’t happy to be there but because he’d immediately picked up on something feeling off. Storms were common, and expected, but the pressure in the air felt so dense that it almost felt like something was stuck in his throat.

He’d have known it was a bad storm even if his chest wasn’t aching obnoxiously.

“I know,” he sighed. Atticus wasn’t the best liar, but undoubtedly he was just trying to make sure they weren’t worrying about him. Alastor appreciated the effort, no matter how unrefined it was.

“I don’t blame him for it. Danger of this scale is new to him. He wasn’t born for war.” Maybe no one was, but he’d found himself in his own, and duty drove Michael to it as well.

“I’ll talk with him some when we get home. Elliot’s been helping, but that’s a lot to put on their shoulders. I know he must be worrying, too. Has he told his parents?”

“I doubt it. I don’t think Elliot would want them to worry,” he frowned and shook his head. Elliot was considerate and thoughtful. He wouldn’t want his parents thinking about the end of the world if he could help it.

Besides, they were going to find a way to fix things.

“I’ll talk to Elliot. Make sure he has everything he needs,” he decided, since if Devyn was going to try to handle Atticus, Michael would do what he could for his unofficial son.

“I was trying to get to one of the libraries, but we might have better luck here. Maybe this place is trying to push us in the right direction,” he suggested, and then turned to the sound of clicking and clacking against the smooth stone floor.

With her head lowered and tail not wagging, Princess made her way to their sides and sat down. The lack of enthusiasm would have been concerning if Sessrumnir wasn’t certain Princess was to him that his necklace was to Devyn, in many ways.

“Hey girl… it’s been rough for you too, huh?” he breathed out as he rubbed at her head and behind her ears. She just whimpered quietly, looking up at them both with sad eyes.

Alastor looked down at Princess for a second, and while there was nothing wrong with the way Sessrumnir was scratching behind her ears, concern had welled in the pit of his stomach so he did what any rational person would do: he waited until it looked like Sessrumnir was about to pull away and then he scooped her up into his arms.

She was huge but she was no stranger to his arms, and as soon as he scooped her up, he kissed her on the snout and pressed his face into her fur. “It’ll be okay,” he promised her, and Michael. “We’re here to take a look at things. If it gets to be too much, you just come visit me at Alastor, won’t you? There haven’t been any storms there for me.”

Alastor held Princess in such a way that she was certain to be comfortable, but that also meant much of his vision was obscured. He’d put her down in a minute, she just looked so sad.

Thankfully, he knew this place well enough that he wasn’t worried about running into anything.

“We can check around here first. Do you want to drop by your Code and make sure it’s comfortable? If poor Princess is having a time,” he kissed her again, “then I can only imagine what it’s going through. She’s so strong and brave. We can visit the library after a quick check to make sure everything looks good around here?”

Sessrumnir watched with despondent fondness as Alastor scooped the giant white wolf-dog into his arms. As Alastor pressed his face against her fur, Sessrumnir moved close to gently wrap his arms around both Princess and Alastor, holding them in a tight embrace for a few moments before shifting around the fur enough to press a kiss against his husband’s temple.

He knew he didn’t have to say it, but he hoped Devyn knew how much he appreciated him. How kind and caring and thoughtful he was. In a lot of ways, Sessrumnir’s summon mimicked its Knight. Princess’ distress mirrored his more than he would like to admit.

“We can do that,” he nodded in agreement. And while Princess didn’t seem to mind being held, she whimpered quietly in Devyn’s arms.

Through the barrier that separated the rest of Sessrumnir from the grove, a purple haze seemed to fill the air. Storms were common on Jupiter, but not like this. It was almost electrifying, even inside the protective shield that kept the weather out.

Everything felt heavy, although it might have just been Michael’s heart. He wanted desperately for a way to keep Earth safe. He hated that he was making contingency plans, but if that was what it took…? He was going to at least keep his family safe.

“I don’t suppose you know what’s going on,” he asked quietly as he stepped through the trees to the little shrine where his Code piece was held, kept safe in the same place where Percy had once brought it.

“We need a way to protect Earth. Something big is coming. Everyone is worried about Earth being destroyed, and we have nothing prepared. We don’t have the technology or the resources,” he shared, although not entirely expecting the Code to speak in return. Still, he wanted to at least acknowledge it and the power it gave him to be a Knight. He wouldn’t take it for granted. Not as long as he had those to protect.

Alastor held Princess for a long moment, peppering soft kisses on her face and snout and whispering soft reassurances. He set her down only just before they entered the grove, not because he wanted to but because he wasn’t sure if the strange purple haze was going to agitate her. He pet atop her head, scratched behind her ears, and then followed Sessrumnir in.

It was hard not to just scoop his husband up into his arms and hold him in her place. The grove felt uncomfortable but Alastor consciously resisted the urge to clear his throat or rub at his chest. He knew Micael was worrying, it was practically radiating off of him.

Alastor did not speak to the Code, in part because every time he saw it he felt as if he should apologize, but more so because he knew this was important to Michael. He placed his hand on Michael’s back, rubbing gently as he scanned the area.

The Code swirled slowly, like it often did, though the mist around it seemed more dull and lifeless than usual. The pressure in the air seemed to have a visceral effect on its appearance, but not its willpower.

“I cannot tell you what specifically is going on,” it answered, “but only because I do not know what lies beyond Sessrumnir. I have been trying to find the answers for a while. Jupiter is not the most agreeable planet but these storms are worse now than ever. I can hardly hear myself think.”

It brightened a little, in tandem with the lightning flashing outside. “I do not have any world-saving weapons hidden away here. You know Sessrumnir is a place of learning. Tell me what you were hoping to find?”

Michael appreciated the hand at his back, and Princess by his side. He reached out to place a hand on her head, and leaned a little into Devyn’s touch.

Even as they searched for clues about what to do, he felt like they were moving farther and farther away from any answers.

“A world devouring serpent is thought to be on its way to Earth. Storms like this one,” he paused to gesture to the purple haze around them, “Have been appearing in various places throughout the galaxy. From what we’ve learned, it’s possible that it was once imprisoned by the Moon Kingdom, but something happened and it broke free. We have an unknown benefactor providing us a little bit of information -- the images of the murals of the place some had been taken to. And they recovered some kind of conducting instrument. A long spike with a star filled bulb on top. Based on the murals, there are supposed to be six that use electricity to trap the creature in between. Here…”

He held up his hand with his signet ring, using the upgraded technology to access the images. He didn’t know if the Code was able to download the information, but he moved closer to at least let it look.

“I’m hoping to find something to stop it. Earth hasn’t faced a creature of this size before. We’re hoping it might be smaller than it’s depicted, but… if it could cause enough destruction to render a world destroyed? There has to be something we can do. I know it’s taboo to enter the vault with personal interest, but if there’s something there that could help…”

He didn’t want to. It felt wrong knowing that Sessrumnir was entrusted with keeping secrets in full confidence, yet if there was something inside that could point them towards how to save Earth… shouldn’t there be an exception?

The Code was quiet for a moment, and it might have seemed as though it weren’t listening or simply could not gather the strength to speak. It continued to swirl in aimless ease as if there were no gravity to the information or request.

Finally, it spoke. “I cannot begin to imagine what information might be stored in the vault but I similarly cannot imagine that it would be wrong to use that information if the goal is for the well-being of so many.”

“But all the same, just as you might find something, you might not. I do not doubt that there is much to be done. But I can only speculate as to what you might find in the vault. You need to fight. You need strength, now. How has your magic been? You're not feeling any ill-effects, are you? Bring me your weapon, I want to inspect it.”

His weapon? Sessrumnir drew out the chained stormglass. Its contents looked like it had crystalized and was ready to break through the glass itself. Definitely not a storm it had been designed to detect.

“I’ve been fortunate in that I haven’t had to test out my magic recently,” he admitted. “Although… if you consider Princess as part of my magic,” he frowned and glanced over to where his summon had curled up at Devyn’s feet, even though the ground was muddy.

“With the storms… I have felt dizzy more frequently. Like an overload of energy, maybe. Or lack of. It’s difficult to describe,” he said, although didn’t seem like he was too pleased with his own explanation.

Almost reverently, Sessrumnir held his weapon out for the Code to inspect, worried that maybe the crystalline nature of its contents would prevent him from using it effectively.

Alastor glanced at Sessrumnir; it wasn’t like he didn’t know when something seemed off. They spoke often, though Sessrumnir was still not the best at being honest about his feelings or when he was having a hard time.

Patience was among Alastor’s greatest talents so it didn’t matter. He felt no need to pressure Michael to open up. He’d be here when he wanted to, if he wanted to. He stood, resolute and determined not to be any sort of distraction while Sessrumnir communicated with the Code. He knew it was a rare opportunity for such a personal connection and he didn’t want to interrupt.

He just wanted to be there to support Sessrumnir.

And Princess, too.

“I see,” the Code said, authoritative but unimposing. “Difficult to describe or not, you have clarified enough for me. Make sure you’re not spreading yourself so thin, Sessrumnir. You have a penchant for pushing yourself too hard. I ask that you be aware of your limits. Which is not to say I am disappointed when you push beyond them. I only wish for you to be at your best. You’ll need to be.”

As Sessrumnir’s weapon was presented, the Code grew bigger, brighter–and the light extended. It was a soft glow at first, gliding over the surface of the weapon.

“I will want you to test your magic, soon. I need you to make sure it’s functioning correctly. And you’ll want to get used to this, too.”

Sessrumnir’s weapon felt heavier; the familiar shape of a weapon he’d had for years melted in his hands and then rapidly reforged itself into a great blade.

“Tell me if that feels right in your hands.”

“Must be a Knight of Sessrumnir thing,” he hummed thoughtfully, doubtful that Percy was any better at keeping an eye on his limits. It was a wonder that he and Devyn managed to get through so much together, what with them both pushing past their limits.

But he didn’t want to make the Code think he was going to ignore it, so he nodded in agreement. He was sure Devyn would be there to keep an eye on him… as they both stubbornly pushed past their limits.

The shifting of his weapon was unexpected, though. He was so used to the chain and stormglass that when a large sword ended up in his hands, he thought he was imagining things.

More than that, while there were obvious markings that made the sword distinctly Jupiter, there were several embellishments that looked like the sword could have been from Alastor.

His heart was racing. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing, and had to look up at Alastor to make sure he wasn’t imagining things.

“It feels right,” he confirmed, shifting his hands to take hold of the hilt, turning it in amazement. “Thank you. I’ll definitely put this to good use,” he promised. Whatever was coming for them, Sessrumnir felt a little more prepared.

Alastor’s eyes had narrowed just slightly, not quite in distrust or confusion, but in obvious interest. The look he gave Sessrumnir confirmed that he saw the same thing. Alastor’s weaponry spoke of both beauty and brutality, so to see a sword here with such similar markers piqued his interest.

As if the Code modifying Sessrumnir wouldn’t have done as much already.

If Alastor had taken but a moment to dig through the armory at the Hall, he probably could have found a dozen swords that could have passed as sister styles.

It didn’t take long for him to relax, and his face settled into a little smile. Now, he reached down to scratch behind Princess’ ears reassuringly.

“What did you do to it?” he asked the Code. He spoke with respect, as one should with any timeless entity, but he wasn’t really one to reign in his curiosity without good reason.

“Resonated with it, as Sessrumnir has his Wonder. You’re wondering how I did it, or why it looks like that?”

The Code didn’t wait for clarification; it answered both.

“When a Knight has such a close bond with their Wonder, they are naturally more in tune with the magic here. Your presence influences a great many things, your weapon among it.”

The Code, despite its facelessness, seemed to look at Sessrumnir. “So, this is a reflection of you. Your starseed. Your prowess. Your goals. You’ve fought hard, for Sessrumnir and for Earth. Truthfully, credit to this goes to you more than me. I am only a tool to facilitate such things. You accomplished this on your own. If your needs change, so too will your weapon. This Wonder, and I, will do everything to support you.”
