Takes place directly after Analysis.

They left Lyndin to his little Commanders and returned to the castle, seeking temporary refuge in the privacy of Jet’s office. With the spike and energy already returned to subspace, Aquamarine perched himself against the edge of Jet’s desk, hands supporting his weight against the solid wood. He tipped his head to shift golden waves of hair out of his face, gaze thoughtful, expression otherwise indifferent.

“Let’s make sure we’re on the same page,” he said. “Do we think Lyndin’s full of s**t?”

He didn’t like the aliens to begin with simply for the fact that they were not of Earth; he liked them less because they’d already demonstrated the lengths they were willing to go to get what they wanted. Aquamarine didn’t care what they did to the White Moon (as far as he was concerned, the White Moon deserved all the s**t that came their way), but he also didn’t expect loyalty from people who’d already engaged in sabotage, regardless of who the victim was. Once a backstabber, always a backstabber. It was only a matter of time.

While Aquamarine had taken up a spot on the edge of his desk, Jet took the seat behind it. He’d pulled up the program to start working on his report, but paused to look curiously up at Aquamarine when asked about Lyndin.

“What do you mean?” he blinked, tilting his head curiously to the side. “Do you think he was lying to us?”

Jet frowned, leaning back in his chair and thoughtfully rubbed his chin.

“Almost like… he was using the Negaverse to suit his own goals, but we keep him and his fellow aliens around because we can still drain them of their experience and technology? I can’t imagine why you would think that. The Queen had a medal to honor them and everything.”

Try as he might, even with his hand in the way, he couldn’t quite hide the twitch at the corner of his lip.

d**k,” Aquamarine scoffed. He swatted Jet’s shoulder, leaving his hand there long enough to follow it up with a hard shove. “You’re full of s**t, too.”

He hopped off the desk to stomp over and raid Jet’s snack cabinets, riffling through the various offerings until he found a packet of pretzels. He ripped it open with more aggression than necessary but managed not to spill any, munching on a few while he got his thoughts in order.

“Do we think he’s hiding something?” Aquamarine asked. “Not about the normal s**t we’re mutually using each other for. I mean about this. The serpent. The tech. What a big ******** coincidence, it being at least partially made from their resources. I’d need to run more tests,” he imitated Lyndin’s voice (poorly). “I’ll reach out to Velencya. I’m sure you will, you freakishly tall, weirdly handsome alien man.”

Despite his words and the obvious skepticism rising within them, there was a lightness to Aquamarine’s tone, as if the strangely good mood he’d been put into when his theories weren’t immediately rejected still lingered.

Jet opened his mouth to respond, but paused with furrowed brow and clearly shifted the train of thought he was having.

Handsome?” he scoffed in disbelief. And then he crossed his arms over his chest to eye Aquamarine warily, like he wasn’t sure if he trusted his opinions anymore.

“Of course they’re hiding something. I doubt they’d want Earth to get destroyed while they’re still on the surface, so we’ll have to make sure someone is watching them. But with as much information that we gave them, they definitely didn’t return as much as I would have expected they would. All their calculations and fancy tech and they’ll still have to do more tests? Obviously they’re stalling for time-- Do you really think he’s handsome??”

Like Jet, Aquamarine opened his mouth to respond, but he paused and stared at Jet while munching on a few more pretzels. For a moment, his face was blank of anything except skepticism, then something seemed to flicker in his eyes.

He smirked.

“Oh, yeah, he’s so handsome,” Aquamarine said, exaggerating his tone for the very rare opportunity of seeing something like jealousy in Jet’s expression. “Definitely my type. Those ******** pointy ears really do it for me. He’s so tall, so strong. And those hands.” Aquamarine feigned a wistful sigh. “You know I like a man who’s good with his hands. All that tinkering he does with his weird alien tech…”

Laughter bubbled up before he could finish the thought. Aquamarine let it burst out of him instead of suppressing it.

Jet clicked his tongue, then scoffed, and then shrugged as casually as he could while also looking completely uncasual about it.

“Yeah yeah, whatever,” he huffed, wiggling uncomfortably where he sat. Obviously Aquamarine was making fun of him now. But it wasn’t as though Aqua called a lot of people handsome!! He barely called him handsome!

“Shouldn’t you be figuring out how we’re going to-- I don’t know… write a report on everything? You know what? You should do that,” he decided, as if Aquamarine hadn’t already told him he would.

Jet was just trying to distract from the light flush to his cheeks. The nerve! Calling Lyndin handsome.

“Oh, I should do the ******** report, huh?” Aquamarine scoffed. “Look at you delegating now. Couldn’t’ve done that last night. Had to go and get yourself hurt. Yes, Sir, I’ll get right on that.”

Aquamarine shoved another pretzel into his mouth, crunching loudly. He grinned around his snack, not actually mad despite the drop in his voice. If Lyndin’s I don’t think that’s a bad assumption had done wonders for Aquamarine’s mood, Jet’s building jealousy improved it even further.

Anyway, I’m assuming you’ll be telling the Queen he and his little underlings were being a little sus, what with all the careful breathing and wide eyed staring and I’ll have to run more scans,” he continued. Aquamarine would’ve liked to keep joking around, if only to see how far he could push Jet, but they did have rather important things to be doing. “Which the Queen probably already knows because she’s the ******** Queen, but I also assume we won’t be mentioning it to anyone else since half the ******** idiots around here don’t know how to ******** act and might cause a stupid ******** inter-gallactic incident before we even know if there’s one worth causing.”

Jet let out an exasperated sigh, but he didn’t tell Aquamarine that he was wrong. On the contrary, he was seeing more and more how personal grievances apparently took precedent to the importance of protecting the Earth.

“I assume she knows, yes. She did warn us to be careful,” he reminded Aqua, as though to remind him that handsome or not it was wise not to trust the Velencians. “I’ll fill it out in my report regardless.” Because even though he told Aquamarine he should be writing a report, Jet wasn’t going to start slacking now. Especially reports for the Queen.

“I’ll need to find Kerberos after this,” he sighed and then rolled his shoulders to stretch. “I’ll get Arles to start looking,” he decided, although it sounded almost like he was talking to himself at that point.

Aquamarine rolled his eyes without any of his usual derision. If anything, the show of attitude seemed a bit fond. “Didn’t we just establish I was doing the report?”

He didn’t bother mentioning that his good mood didn’t mean he wouldn’t be careful. Aquamarine was always careful. (Alright, maybe not always depending on the situation, but certainly much more often these days than he used to be. He had reason to be careful. Between the two of them, Jet was the reckless one; Aquamarine had made it his mission to ensure it didn’t lead to Jet’s downfall.) He didn’t trust the aliens any more now than he had before meeting with them. His delight at proving himself at least somewhat intelligent hadn’t blinded him to any potentially devious intentions on their part of their alien guests.

Aquamarine tossed the bag of pretzels at Jet with the sort of frown that meant Jet should eat some if he didn’t want to spend the next several minutes getting nagged at. Taking slow, careful steps, Aquamarine placed himself behind Jet’s chair. He set his hands against Jet’s shoulders, but couldn’t offer much relief beneath layers of jackets and cape and the fancy bits of his General King garb.

“Don’t waste too much of your time on the ******** traitor now. It’s barely afternoon,” Aquamarine reminded him. “You’ll have to wait until nightfall. They don’t usually crawl out in the daylight.”

He clicked his tongue at the tossed bag of pretzels, but because he didn’t want to be nagged at, he took one from the bag to chew on. And then when Aquamarine made his way behind his chair, he tipped his head back to look up at him.

“I’m sorry,” he sighed, and he at least had the decency to sound sincere about it. “I know it was probably just a fluke that we were all pulled to that place together, but I’m concerned about the priorities the others might have. If we don’t hit the ground running now, who knows what we’re going to be missing out on. We can only hope that the White Moon survived that place and are gathering information too.”

He placed one hand on Aquamarine’s as it rested against his shoulder, but picked a pretzel out of the bag with his other to hold up for him to take. And then did his best to stifle a yawn.

Even if he was running around with all the energy he could give, he was exhausted. Physically and mentally. How were they supposed to fight something that could eat worlds?

Aquamarine shrugged off Jet’s apology. “You wouldn’t be you if you didn’t throw yourself into this bullshit headfirst.”

That didn’t mean Aquamarine liked it, he simply knew to expect it. The Negaverse had been Jet’s life for almost a decade now. Jet had made it his life’s purpose to protect the Earth and achieve the Negaverse’s goals. Aquamarine did what he could to make that easier—and, on occasion, to make it more rewarding for them both.

He plucked the offered pretzel out of Jet’s hand and popped it into his mouth. His chewing filled the thoughtful silence that followed, eyes flicking over Jet’s face.

“We can write up a report for the Queen. I’ll worry about drafting something for everyone else later,” Aquamarine said. “Then you should sleep more. An hour or two. You’ll want to be in better shape than this when you’re hunting for Kerberos. Even if they do care about the Earth enough to want to save it, I don’t trust the White Moon not to pull some ******** up stunt if they think they have the opportunity.”

“Tell me about it,” Jet groaned in agreement, closing his eyes for a few moments as he allowed himself to relax. At least for a short while while Aquamarine was there at his back.

If the White Moon had a chance to mess things up, they would absolutely do it. Well, there were unfortunately many times some in the Negaverse messed things up as well, but he didn’t want to dwell on that when they had bigger things to worry about.

“Alright, that sounds like a plan. Thank you, Love. And I promise I’ll try to sleep,” he agreed. He knew he needed to have his wits about him when dealing with the enemy, even if they were trying to figure things out together.

Before Aquamarine could argue, Jet took the hand from his shoulder and pressed it against his lips.

“You’ll rest with me, won’t you?” he asked, looking up at Aquamarine with pleading eyes.

“What the ******** kind of stupid question is that? Why wouldn’t I?” Aquamarine scoffed.

He let Jet kiss his hand, carding his remaining fingers through Jet’s curls. He pulled several thick locks off Jet’s forehead; then, before he could think better of the disgusting display of emotion, Aquamarine leaned down to place a kiss there.

He pulled away rather than look Jet in the eye after, forcing a mullish frown back onto his face as his cheeks went a little pink.

“Hurry up. We don’t have all ******** day,” he complained, but his voice lacked heat.
