Characters: Anika and Gabriel
Plot: On the outskirts of a small town live a young couple who have come to live there for a few years now. Not much is known about them prior to their arrival, but the little things they do for the community meant that few cared about their past. Their future was bright enough to blot out the rest.

                                                        GABRIEL ♫ MONTGOMERY
                                                        DUKE OF MUSIQUE

Making his way back home after work, Gabriel felt a certain kind of accomplishment in all that he'd gotten done today. With every word he wrote, he could tell that the people around him were really getting an understanding of what he was trying to convey. It wasn't as immediate as what he was used to, but given his situation, it couldn't be helped. Besides, the fact that they were starting to pick up on things at all was a sign that he was doing his job correctly. After all, what sort of teacher would he be if he couldn't get his students to learn?

There were quite a few perks to working there, really. The sense of pride he could take in his work went far beyond the glitz and glamor of being a freelance writer. To give the kids in this town even a sense of the joy that reading and writing brought him really was the best. On top of that, it would give them job opportunities that even some of their parents didn't have. Not that he was leaving that be; the adult courses were proving beneficial as well. Such a consistent paycheck wasn't bad either. It did mean that he wasn't left with a lot of time to work on novels, but he didn't mind so much. In a way, he was living in his own fairy tale.

Gabriel gathered a few things on the way, having saved up for something nice. He may not be nearly as distinguished of a cook as the chefs of his childhood, but he really felt like he was getting the hang of things. He only hoped that it would turn out as well as he wanted it to. After all, his patron for the evening had certainly earned it for all the hard work they'd been putting in as well.

Arriving at their home, he almost felt like he had to pinch himself. It might not have been nearly as large as what either of them was used to...but it was theirs. Theirs and theirs alone. Gabe couldn't help but smile every time he saw it from that alone. Entering their humble abode, he placed the flowers he bought into a vase on the table, poured some water in, and got to work. He had a decent amount of time before she got home, but he didn't want to take any chances.

"Pâtes à la Ratatouille" made it sound like such a fancy dish, but it was a lot less scary now that he had everything laid out in front of him. Slice some zucchini here...some eggplant there...they should probably be about equal, right? Getting a fire going, he got to sautéing. So far, so good. Luckily, he was able to save up for something extra special that would hopefully cover up any mistakes he made in the process: two hefty balls of burrata that he'd place on top when it was time to serve.

Things came together quicker than he expected, so he kept everything covered when he finished. Even if it meant he'd have dinner later than he normally would, perhaps even hours later if it were a particularly rough day, he didn't want to eat yet. It wasn't worth it if it wasn't with her. Getting some water, Gabe sat down and waited for his favorite person to arrive.

And who says happy endings aren't real?

"Talking" "Thoughts"

When she had taken Gabriel’s hand, Anika hadn’t anticipated what would happen next. They were running into the unknown, praying no one would find them. And now, they were here. She wasn’t a princess anymore. News had spread that a new heir had been discovered recently, but she did her best not to trouble herself with it. It was easier to focus on work.

The tools she had afforded to her weren’t of the same caliber as those her nursemaids used to heal her wounds, but it was enough. She couldn’t heal others with her words, but she could coax them into a sleep when she stitched them up. It troubled her how many men would walk in each day, hoping the war might end one of these days, but Corthyr would not let up. Boils, bruising, vomiting- Anika had seen it all, but she lived for it. She was finally living her dream. Not the spotlight her father laid out for her, but being able to truly help people.

Walking home alone, Anika feared the idea that she might still be recognized, but Gabriel always assured her that it was nearly impossible. It had been years now, but she was sure that if she was ever to be discovered, there was a world of pain and imprisonment waiting for her. Some nightmares still troubled her at night, but there he was at her side, never leaving, just like he had promised her the day they had left together. With him at her side, there was nothing she couldn’t do.

Arriving at their home, she smiled. It wasn’t a castle, but inside she felt more adoration than any of her fans prior. Enthusiastically, she opened the door to be welcomed by the smell of vegetables cooking on the stove. It was not a five-star meal, but she found it far tastier than anything she had at the castle. Maybe it was because she no longer had to fear it being poisoned or just that there was someone who cared about her who was preparing it. " I’m home, Bello. Where is my customary greeting?" She grinned at the man who was waiting for her before she started her boots at the door.

At the end of the day, she was still a princess. Instead of many servants waiting on her, only one person was waiting on her. But there were just a few rules she wanted him to follow. One, she wished to wrap her arms around her person after such a long day. Two, it had been eight long hours since she had been able to crack wise with anyone for fear they might no longer wish to use her services. And third, if it were up to her, the man would be greeting her with a glass of wine and nothing but an apron, but concerns were expressed about her ability to drink and unwrap him at the same time. As well as the fear of their dinner getting cold. These are all valid concerns, but logic was never something Anika liked to use.

" How many brains did you mold today?" Anika spoke, getting her boots off and approaching the dining table. The vest he wore made Anika’s heart swoon, thinking about the teacher out there molding minds, making a difference in his own right. She was curious to hear about his day, knowing hers wasn’t meant for dinner discussion. Teaching others to read and write showed Anika how misguided she was prior to coming here. The idea of a quality education wasn’t something that she had ever considered a gift before, but seeing how little those knew in this town alone was enough to help open her mind more.

                                                        GABRIEL ♫ MONTGOMERY
                                                        DUKE OF MUSIQUE

                                                        Hm?

Gabriel could hear footsteps approaching. Not just anyone's, though; Gabriel could recognize the sound of those heels in the middle of a hurricane. Lighting some candles by the table, he watched the front door open and was greeted with the sight of his one and only. " I’m home, Bello. Where is my customary greeting?" Gabe had meant to be by her side already but had been far too stunned by the incredible woman before him to move. It didn't matter if she'd been through a ten-hour shift or a hundred-hour shift; Anika shined above it all like a star that had plucked itself from the heavens above to grace those down below with her presence. And he got to spend every day with her. It's a wonderful world.

But not one without its problems, of course. He could smell hints of one Corthyr toxin or another on her. Not enough to hurt either of them, of course; it likely lingered from a patient she had been in contact with during her shift. The forever war that plagued the continent meant that countless men, women, and children got caught in the crossfire. Gabriel would ask about the terrible things that Anika endured to help those in need, and it terrified him to think that there was no end to it in sight. And yet...Anika persisted. Whatever he did to support her, that took a level of resilience that was born from her strength alone. There were difficult days, sure. Terrible, terrible days. Despite it all, though, he knew they'd make it through. No force in the world was mightier than the two of them together. And none ever could be.

His poetic musings would have to wait, though; there were more important matters to attend to. "You'll have to forgive me, mi tesoro. Just admiring the view." Making a stride towards her as she got her boots off, he brought his hands over to lift one of hers so that he might gently plant his lips upon it. " How many brains did you mold today?" Looking back up at the queen of their humble abode, her smile made him feel as though time itself was honor-bound to stop so they could savor the moment of their shared bliss. It was sad in a way that such feelings weren't true, but sharing a meal together was just as enjoyable.

"A great many, or so I'd like to think. Whether the molding sticks or not has yet to be seen, but I was able to drag most of them through their first paragraphs today."

Walking around her as she continued to make her way to the dinner table, he wrapped his arms around her and stole a kiss on her cheek before he finished preparing their plates. Smirking, he went to take the covers off of their meals. His timing wasn't as bad as he thought, as they were still quite warm. Going to the kitchen for a moment, he brought out the burrata with a plate and tongs and nestled them atop their respective dinner plates. With a decorative drizzle of olive oil in a fairly uniform circle, it was all set. "And what of your day? I'm sure there were some ghastly sights, but I'm hoping to wash them away with some better ones." Perhaps he shouldn't have said that. Was she going to ask about him parading around naked again? Not that he'd mind it per se, but he promised himself he'd save that for special occasions only. Birthdays, anniversaries, and the like. Especially when it was winter.

Putting the plate and tongs for the burrata away, Gabriel came back with a bottle of wine and promptly opened the bottle. Carefully pouring glasses for them both and setting them on the table, he felt rather proud of how much better he'd gotten at uncorking bottles. Such tasks were the duty of others in his upbringing, but he felt as though he'd adapted rather well. Gabriel then pulled out a seat for her before doing the same for himself. Looking at all he set up tonight, perhaps this was a special occasion. But his clothes would remain on for the time being.

And now for the final touch. Gabriel strolled over to the most recent addition to their home: a brand-new record player. They had held onto a secondhand model for quite some time, but it had fallen into disrepair, and this town hadn't someone with the skills to fix it back up. It had cost them a fair deal, but what was a home in Musique of all places if it didn't have music playing? Placing on a vinyl for some piano melodies to hopefully relax them both after a long day, he finally sat himself down. His smile had lost its mischievous edge, but it remained on his face the whole time as he'd now get to spend time with his best friend and the love of his life.

                                                        "Buon appetito, Magnificetta."

To say the road up till now was easy would be to tell the biggest lie to ever be told, and they may very well face worse hardships in the future...but for now? Now was the time for wine, pasta, and reminding himself that he probably shouldn't show off the little handkerchief one of his students had gifted him yet. Plaid was the devil's cloth and not to be discussed on such an otherwise carefully constructed occasion. He'd save that discussion for the morning.

"Talking" "Thoughts"

After many letdowns and misguided attempts to become the queen, here she was. Joining the dining table, she couldn’t help but wonder what was taking place back at the castle, had her father forced the whole family to sit down as he listed off all their failures, or had they all sat in silence? Whatever they were eating didn’t have half the heart that the meals her man provided for her, as well as the assurance that the person preparing it only wanted her happiness over anything else.

As his lips pressed against her cheek, she felt herself snap out of the wonders of what if and back to the blissful reality they were currently residing in. Gabriel had only scratched the surface of the ways her mind continued to torment her, and she felt it best to forget the past, no matter how heavily it tried to haunt her. Gabriel made an effort to still make her feel like a princess in her own right, unveiling each dish as she oohed and awed at each one in an effort to stroke his ego. It was fun playing this game, the one where he lived to serve her and her alone. More importantly, where she understood what when he said he would cherish her and love her, he meant it.

The idea of him offering to wash away her sadness gave her some ideas, but nothing appropriate for the dinner table. Would that stop her? Of course not. " If you want to wash my sadness away, maybe we can save that for when I need a shower later," Anika smirked at the man before taking a drink of her wine. A side quest of hers was always to make Gabriel flustered, enamored by how wide the man’s eyes could get behind the sunglasses by the silly things she could say.

Anika racked her mind as to what would make the man put on such a display for the two of them, hopeful she hadn’t forgotten their anniversary. But knowing that was just the perks of dating a man who enjoyed surprising her as much as she liked to surprise him. The woman had even started wearing clothes more suited to his tastes, partially due to the fact she couldn’t justify wearing her favorite designers outside of their abode for fear of being discovered, but the wool skirt she was wearing today was a material she was still getting over.

" Grazie. Such a spread, I truly am the queen of my own kingdom." Her smile spread as she put down her glass, preparing herself to eat the burrata before her. Spoiled in her own right, this was never the life she had dreamed of living ten years ago, but here she was, pleased to eat something prepared just for her. Even when she lived back at the castle, she couldn’t say the same thing was true.

The soft cheese melted in her mouth, causing her to moan slightly at the deliciousness. " Oh, you have outdone yourself once again." What would she have done without him? The idea that she could ever dream of making something so special made her laugh. But there was no feeling of debt pressing down upon her, but of love and adoration. Not deserved by any means but appreciated, " I have been trying to learn how to cook from some of the other nurses, and I managed to boil pasta water the other day. Just you wait, one of these days I will have a king's feast prepared for you. Any requests?"

                                                        DUKE OF MUSIQUE

For Gabriel, trying to keep one's composure while in the presence of Anika Alta was a near-impossible task. From the moment she locked eyes with him, there was a shift in the air. An intimacy formed across a lifetime that none could replicate. Several bathing escapades which his partner knew full well would make him flustered just thinking about. He had been able to keep his composure from that comment, but just barely, and that shower comment nearly sent him over the edge. Thankfully he hadn't been sipping on his wine at the time.

The subtle moan that gently crescendoed from Anika's ever-pertinent lips after her first bite of the burrata only served to send his heart rate aflutter for all new reasons. She wouldn't waste such sounds to spare his feelings; she was genuinely enjoying the meal. Or at least the cheese, but that was a good sign for the rest. Shying his eyes away as she complemented his cooking, he smiled.

                                                        "Well, y'know, I...try my best."

As she let out a joyous laugh, Gabe let his gaze ease its way back to her. His gaze always led back to her, honestly. At any point in his life, in every point in his life, Anika was his constant. And with a melody as With lines like that still running in my head, maybe I should go draft something up sometime. Even though he felt a bit corny thinking about it like that, it was true. Her melody was the kind of brilliance most could only dream of hearing. He could write entire anthologies and he wouldn't have scratched the surface of how incredible he thought she was. " I have been trying to learn how to cook from some of the other nurses, and I managed to boil pasta water the other day. Just you wait, one of these days I will have a king's feast prepared for you. Any requests?" Her cooking, on the other hand....well, it wasn't bad. It was not objectively bad. But this sounded like exciting progress. A soft chuckle escaped his lips.

"I'll be excited to experience the fruits of your labor sometime, then," replied Gabriel with a gentle smirk. Going for his first bite, he first cut open the burrata and marveled at its glistening center. The dairy shop he got them from really are astounding; a staple of the community, really. That was one thing they'd never quite get tucked away in their ivory towers. Despite the amount of secrecy they had to maintain while they lived here, Gabriel really loved feeling like he was a genuine part of something. Not by birthright, not by a title, but by his own merits. By theirs. After all, it was no secret to him that he got deals on occasion for the work both he and his lovely partner did around here. Gabriel felt comfort in that.

As he finally placed some pasta and cheese into his mouth, that wasn't the only thought that comforted him. While the nonnas still had him beat by a long shot, he really was proud of how things turned out. He hadn't exactly had much cooking experience either growing up; it was honestly a miracle he could do this well. I'll definitely have to make this again sometime. Gabriel brought his napkin up to pat the corner of his mouth, and as he brought it down a sly smile grew on his face. "I'll have to think of a meal...although, uh...one does come to mind, if I may be so bold. But it depends on how long you want the shower to last." The words came out clumsily, but felt very on-point in his head. He was fairly confident that he knew how to tease as well. Until the cough came. The cough did not do him any favors. He might've been decent enough at writing lines, but his delivery definitely still needed some work.

Still, he didn't shift his gaze from her this time. "I think that one may need more time in the oven," said Gabriel with nods and a chuckle. Taking a short sip from his wine, he began to cut another piece of the burrata. "On a more serious note, I do have to ask: how are the clinics handling the growing body counts? Aide from the capital has been sparse at best. Is there anything the rest of us can do to help?" While he was not at all versed in medical practices, he was more than willing to lend a hand where he could. Not just to take some of the burden off of his lover's shoulders, but for this town. For their home. This place had treated them better than their "real" home ever did and how said home treated their town even. Lending a hand was the least he could do.

"Talking" "Thoughts"

Anika’s nose twitched slightly at Gabriel’s remark. It was still new, not being the best at everything, and that being… okay. This used to be where she would scoff and talk about how cooking was a commoner’s skill or attempt to flee the conversation entirely, but she remained at the table. Still doing her best to remain present despite it all, grounding herself at the thought that one day she would manage to make something that didn’t make her partner want to gag himself with a spoon to force it down.

Watching the man eat, Anika knew deep down his words came from a place of excitement and love as opposed to a place of disappointment or displeasure. It was hard to fight the fleeing feelings, but his gentle looks made it easier. In the beginning, she teased him for staring at her for so long, but now she basked in the man’s spotlight that remained focused on her. As his smile turned slightly, Anika’s curiosity piqued, thinking as to what the academic would think of her cook. It was possible he might try and tease her by giving her something simple, but mocking her was unlike him.

There was a brief moment of silence as Anika tried to process the words the man had just uttered. A relaxed giggle followed as her face flushed at the idea of the two of them together, " Rather bold of you indeed. But I would need more details." She winked, surprised by the man’s comments but wanting to encourage the endeavor. It wasn’t the worst attempt at courting she had met, and she found it almost endearing how nervous he got, considering how long they had been together.

Taking another sip of her wine, she thought about how long he would remain flustered for. The cough was alarming, but it was hard not to smile at his bashfulness. His talents with writing didn’t always transfer to his performance, but his actions often spoke louder than words ever could. Not wanting to embarrass him further, she didn’t dare comment on his inability to swallow and instead focused on the fact that he continued to stare at her in amusement. " Perhaps, but I am curious about the finished product." Anika mused, not wanting him to fully escape from what he had said.

The conversation shift was rather telling of how uncomfortable he was getting, and Anika knew well enough how to read a room. The conversation was still about her, something her father would have praised her for, but she found herself wanting to ask him more about his work. The fear still held her heart that he might come to resent her for taking her with no matter how special he made her feel; she imagined the matter to be taxing to do the work a team of servants once did to keep her feelings high.

" There is not much we can do besides work each day. The night nurses have asked me to cover for them from time to time, so your company may be needed, but outside of that, all we can do is continue to work and pray." Without her father’s help, there wasn’t much they could do. As pitiful as it sounded, they needed more support, more soldiers, more supplies, and the tyrant was trying to save resources. That’s when a terrible thought came to mind, " Do you ever think it would be better if I returned to the capital?" Her voice was soft, trying to appear unbiased but hoping the answer was no.

" All of these people are suffering, and if I returned, maybe I could…" It was childish to think of it in such a way. Especially given how little her father had listened to her prior to her leaving, she was just a model, not someone he cared for. But still thinking about the poor injured people suffering each day, it was hard for her not to consider. " Maybe he would help more if he knew- I just don't know." She shook her head as she looked down at her food, ashamed for being so self-absorbed.

                                                        GABRIEL ♫ MONTGOMERY
                                                        DUKE OF MUSIQUE

While moving to a more serious topic wouldn't exactly be the highlight of a romantic evening, it was something that Gabriel could speak on far more comfortably than any dirty talk. Besides, was it not the job of a good storyteller to provide an air of suspense to his much-loved listener? Though I'm betting some would consider this a bit of an over-correction. Regardless, he was deeply invested in all aspects of Anika's life. Of their life. If anything egregious compared to normal was going on, he'd like to know before they got to showering. Should that be the case, it'd give him more reason to worship his one true ruler properly.

" There is not much we can do besides work each day. The night nurses have asked me to cover for them from time to time, so your company may be needed, but outside of that, all we can do is continue to work and pray."

"Gods above, isn't that the truth. Well, just know that my company is at your beckon c-"

" Do you ever think it would be better if I returned to the capital?"

The idea shook Gabriel to his core, stopping him in his tracks. Immediately did Anika's face shift to that of her teenage self, ragged and worn from training far too harsh than she deserved to be put through. So perturbed was he by that specter that he hadn't realized that he dropped his fork until seconds after the fact. Looking down, it at least fell into the plate. Waste not, want not, he thought morbidly. Anika would go on to speak on how bad things were getting, which he only faintly was able to hear. As her voice trailed off, he finally got enough of a grip so that he could take a long sip of wine.

There was a despondent look in her eye as she brought up the notion of returning again, her gaze falling down as his own grew pained with concern. "Ani, I...I'm sorry," said Gabriel softly, getting up to walk over to her. Gently guiding her hand up, he knelt down to kiss his muse upon it. "But listen, you...you're doing a lot here. And for as much as he might listen to your voice, I fear he'd no sooner force you to turn it into a battlecry than he would support other ventures." His voice was a near whisper at this point, each word delicately placed. While Gabriel disagreed with the notion of the king turning over a new leaf, he meant not for Anika's endless bravery to be disparaged.

"That you'd sacrifice your own well being for your people, though? That's far more marvelous than anything he'd even dream of doing."

Gabriel's hand would linger on hers for a moment longer, his thumb rubbing at a mellow tempo. Releasing it as he rose back up, he looked out the window to see the landscape before them. It was a far cry from where either of them had come from, and yet held such rich character that no amount of gold could replicate. Maybe if they could force the king to confront this fact, he would listen. But it just didn't seem possible. If he wouldn't listen to Anika back then, what patience would he have for her now? Just as well, Gabriel himself would surely be labeled a traitor. He'd be lucky if he only got hanged. It just wasn't feasible, as sad as that was to think. Thankfully, not everything was so bleak.

"Oh! I meant to show you this when you came in, but I got a bit too excited about dinner..."

Walking away from the table for a moment, Gabe rummaged through his bag before taking out a single sheet of paper. As he returned to Anika's side, he presented to her the closest approximation of her that a kid with three crayons and a dream could muster. "Little Alessia drew this for you today. Apparently, she wants to be a 'pretty healer lady' like you one day," said Gabe with a hopeful smile. While she might not have had the same audience as she might have had as princess, he hoped that Anika knew that she was still making an impact on those around her. And while the circumstances around them weren't grim, it was better this than being back in their respective cages.

"Talking" "Thoughts"

Silence was never Anika’s strong suit. Even though they were hiding, Anika knew that Gabriel was the one person she couldn’t hide from. Still, looking at his shocked expression as his fork dropped to the floor was enough to have mild feelings of regret for not keeping her thoughts a secret this once. It had been a long time since she had disconnected from her body, but that’s because she hadn’t wanted to escape in such a long time. And Gabriel was the reason for that, his hand in hers as they left that faithful day. The man had warned her about looking back, but she couldn’t help but wonder what if.

His touch reawakened her from her despondency, unsure of when he had left his spot and come over to her. ’ This isn’t good.’ She bit her lip, welcoming the discomfort as it was proof she was still feeling something. It wasn’t fair for her to rely so heavily on the man, wishing his apologies to her, for him to have to fix the problem that she had caused. Her thoughts, her insecurities had gotten in the way of things before, but when she had escaped with Gabriel, she swore that wouldn’t happen again. Something that never changed from when she had left was that she hated liars, just like she was hating herself now.

The words Gabriel spoke were those of the truth, something she deeply admired about him. It was true that if she returned, it was more than likely she would be used as a weapon. Forced to return to the room where the shrieks never ceased, no matter how tightly you covered your ears or begged them to stop. The smooth texture of his thumb dancing with hers was enough for her smile to return, grounding her with the memory of when they first held hands. His sweaty palms and the way he had been too afraid to make eye contact with her were the moments she had known that she had wanted to break him; little did she know that she would fall for him instead.

When she was young, Anika had no idea it was even possible to escape such a fate. Her ideal of marrying into another royal family was still fresh. Now, the name of the Windurian Prince meant very little to her. It was almost humorous to think about the rage it used to send her into. But Gabriel was there for it all. All her heartbreaks and mistakes. Never a judgmental look or glare, just a sympathetic nod or a shoulder for her to cry on. But he never made her feel like she owed him, a part of the reason why she loved him so deeply.

"Little Alessia drew this for you today. Apparently, she wants to be a 'pretty healer lady' like you one day,"

The waterfall started flooding once more, happiness overcoming her. Alessia had been a favorite of hers, the girl often stopping by with random bruises or cuts. Often, an excuse to see some of the beaten and bloody, but Anika didn’t mind the company. " Alessia needs to stop picking fights with Jonry. Then maybe a career in healing could be in her future." She laughed, wiping the tears away before looking her beloved in the eye, " Thank you."

Placing the drawing on the table, she offered her hand back to his, " Your hand used to shake when I offered it to you, who told you that you could be so casual with your princess?" She faked seriousness, her eyes now red from the tears. Entwining her fingers with his, she offered a silly smile, " I love you; you fool. Thank you for being with me."

                                                        GABRIEL ♫ MONTGOMERY
                                                        DUKE OF MUSIQUE

At the sight of new teardrops trailing the cheeks of the loveliest woman in all of Musique, Gabriel couldn’t help but take pause and wonder if he’d offended her in some way. Oh gods, hopefully little Lessi hasn’t been making too much of a fuss with the medics. Then, as he listened to the sounds of her whimpers making up major chords, he realized that her tears were not being spent on sorrow at this time. Quite the opposite.

Instead, he found his childhood sweetheart reaffirming that the bond between her and his student had gone both ways. Alessia was probably one of, if not his brightest, student among the kids her age, so it was nice to know that she would have a mentor like Anika when it came to her medical pursuits. As for keeping her and Jonry from clawing each other to shreds, Gabriel shared in his princess’s hopes. ”And Jonry in something other than getting on Alessia’s nerves,” responded Gabriel, joining in on her laughter. If they could only find something to get the pair on the same page about at least one thing, surely they could come to settle things between one another. Start fresh, even. On such a day, the town would likely hold a celebration.

                                                        " Thank you."

                                                        ”Thank you.”

When it came to gratitude, surely it was Gabriel who should forever be the one speaking of how gracious Anika was. Not only with her time when it came to imparting her own knowledge with Alessia every now and again, but just by simply being here with him. Despite all that had been going on at the royal castle at that time, it couldn’t have been an easy choice. As such, Gabe knew he had to make every day she spent with him the best day she’d ever had. That way, outside of the occasional musings like what went on tonight, she’d never truly have to worry about having made the wrong choice.

Heat rose to his cheeks as Anika made a comment on how brazenly he had been acting with her. A nervous chuckle escaped his lips. ”W-well, I, uh,” was the best he could get out. Despite her complaint on the matter, it wasn’t like she couldn’t get him flustered at a drop of a hat. If anything, she’d only gotten better at it. And she definitely knows it. Slender fingers effortlessly intertwined themselves into his, and Gabe could barely keep the pout he wanted to give her from curling into a smile.

" I love you; you fool. Thank you for being with me."

The “I” was enough to make Gabriel stop trying to hold it back. From the way she spoke that singular syllable, she was either going to declare her love outright or through more teasing. Either way, smitten as he was, he’d have been forced to give. ”I love you too, my muse.” His hand still with hers, he placed the other upon her shoulder, moved in to kiss her. It was a long, delicate duet, with sweet symphonies being performed by glistening lips so soft that they were for them alone to hear.

With a gentle release, he gazed in awe at the thing of beauty before him. ”As good of a job I may have done with dinner, I have to say…it tastes all the better mixed with the taste of your lips,” whispered the teacher to the healer. The ever-dutiful duke to the only princess in the world that mattered to him. For all the woe and sorrow that went on in the world, just the presence of Anika in every page and every chapter of his life made it all worthwhile. Every sound that came from her was grounding. He only hoped to offer her the same. How else could he be his favorite singer’s number one fan?
