Vaiarava 1 She had been sent to the ranch for her birthday by her Mother, apparently it was a special event and it was time for her to get a pet. Her sister would also get the same opportunity if she so chose. Vaia thought it was quite thoughtful of her mother who kept a keen eye on her daughters. So did Daddy for that matter. Vaia usually clung to her sister for support. She had yet to really come out of her shell properly and was somewhat painfully shy. Her Mother had assured her before she had left that she would be in good hands. She approached the garden gate to the office to see a rather large blue earthling standing in the garden waiting for her. "Uh hi? My mother sent me to uh get a new pet? In the hopes that perhaps it might make me happy and curb a bit of anxiety." She sighed. Talking to strangers was so hard.

Thallassa 1 "Ahh yes right on time, good! I will be your escort today. I have a few questions to start off with. A) How big did you want your critter to be? Ridable, managable or tiny? I reccomend something a bit bigger than tiny for anxiety so long as you are not intimidated too much. B) Were you hoping for a male or female? C) Did you have anything in mind right off the bat that you would like to see?" He turned and offered her a cup of tea. Always soothing. "Here my mother would swat me if I didn't offer you some tea." No doubt one of his Mama's special blends. She had gotten into doing the tea herself. And it was rather good, even with all of the nonexistant spare time she had. She would have to chose someone at some point to take over the critter medical practice. He wondered which of them would do it. Even he was an option. Ushiwa was as well. He wanted Mom to slow down when she wanted too, to not have to feel too obligated to continue if she didn't want to. Though she showed no sign of slowing down, he supposed she was still much younger than Dad was.

"Oh um well, I think something bigger would be more encouraging..so ridable? I don't really care which gender the animals is and I don't really have an idea of species.." She felt bad for not having all the answers but honestly she really didn't know what she wanted, but being able to ride would be very cool even though she was quite tall. She would look awkward..so something bigger than a radaku maybe?
She happily accepted the cup of tea from him. That was something she understood. She LOVED tea. "I do love tea." She smiled tentatively..perhaps this ordeal wouldn't be too bad after all.
"I guess I will look and perhaps the gods will tell me which animal is my soul mate?" She figured that was how this was going to work at least. She was sure there was no actual test.. at least she hoped not. This was to help her confidence not hinder it.

He took a tiny pair of spectacles out of his pocket and used them to write a short note in a book. Then he took a good look at her...
"Ridable huh?" He asked. What was he going to do with that Nahii he had rescued. Hmm. Maybe she wasn't the right match for the large deep sea eel...for all she seemed to have at least a dab of moakai blood, most of her seemed to be menehune, and they were more swampy.
"Alright then, I have a few candidates for you. Once you have enjoyed your tea, please don't rush, we can go and have a gander. I think I will have a tea too." It seemed the thing to do. It would further help put her at ease and well. He loved tea as well but mornings he usually reserved for coffee. It was an early morning on chore duty on the ranch and he usually had coffee, did his chores then stuffed himself at breakfast if he had nothing else going on immediatley.

After the bracing tea she felt brave enough to continue. She wondered if there was something special in that tea. She shrugged, it had served its purpose, though if there was a special ingredient she sort of wanted it. She had been painfully shy and reserved since she was little and she really wanted to break out of her shell. Hence being here for a pet to help with that.
"Okay I'm ready to see them." She puffed her thin chest out trying to picture the grace and power of her mother balanced with the strength and sweetness of her father. She was half of each of them so why didn't it feel that way?
Her Mother had wisely told her that she would probably grow out of it and Vaia really really hoped that that was true. Fingers crossed, time to meet her new bestie! Hopefully she or the critter didn't end up running away screaming. Her family liked her well enough but due to her shyness she had an awful time making new friends. Hopefully this would help change that.

He led her over to the paddocks and pondered options on the way over there. They had quite a bit of stock at the moment it was letting it happen naturally and letting her and the critters have some choice in it.
"Well, there are two ways to go about this but I have a hunch that free flow might be the best. These critters are all well trained and will not hurt you as you walk among them, pay attention to who walks over who looks at you." He would be watching as well and would be able to give advice if needed.
But it would be good for her confidence to try and pick out one on her own. "We have a lot of snaptrotter if you can't find one you like we can switch to Janarim.
He opened the gate and waved her through it. Swinging it closed and leaning against the fence. This was his favorite part of his job, connecting a customer with the critter they were meant for. Better that it be organically done like this too.

Maybe this was why he had plied her with the bravery tea. She was going to need all the help she could get. "Oh okay." Obviously he was not coming with her but would be able to support her should she need it. She supposed that was okay, she didn't want to bring up that she was nervous, he could probably already tell. Ugh. Well there was only one way to get this done and that was to actually just do it.
She walked forward and did her best to follow his advice. He would know he had probably helped tons of people like her to find one of the ranch critters to take home. She took deep breaths and tried not to notice her shaking hands. Eventually when she wasn't immediately eaten she started to watch the snaptrotters and how they interacted with each other. Rather than jump to conclusions she would take it slow and see how things went with a little bit of time. The last thing she wanted to do was rush this.

He watched as three separate and very different critters took up the bait of the young woman. First and most shocking of all, a fire red janarim whickered over the fence as if he had just spotted his best friend for life. Hmm, that was supposed to be a back up. Funny how some things just happen. He set aside a different treat for her to try for that one, they preferred red meat to fish. He did too come to that. This janarim was a fiery beast from northern Oba. A long lineage of supreme bloodlines he was just coming into his prime. A superb option.
The second was a male snaptrotter, the deepest of marine blues and blacks in a sort of orca type coloration. It was a gorgeous healthy beast way into his prime with a normally salty temperament but he looked like putty as he slowly ambled up to the girl as if not to scare her.
A venom green female with a smattering of round black spots was marching up to the pair of them with business in her eyes. Not jealousy already? What a princess! Who would the girl choose..could she handle all three? All for a good cause and they were very good friends with her oh so helpful family.

She was out there for a while and then things started to happen. The snaptrotters began to swirl as a large male approached her directly from the front. She wasn't entirely sure what to do but he didn't seem to be moving in a particularly threatening way. She did not see the venom female sneaking up from behind her with a touch of rage that the blue male would chose the earthling that she herself, a fellow dominant in the herd had decided would suit her just fine.
Vaia tried not to tremble and held a vibrating hand out to the male who had ambled just close enough to be in touching range. She wanted to look to Thallassa to see if this was in fact what she was supposed to do but she was too terrified to turn and take her eyes off the tall, young and well muscled imposing male in front of her.
"Hello there." She said low, gratified to see that her voice didn't quiver as her muscles did. He was so very big.

He was gripping the fence pretty hard wondering what he should do at this moment as the field heated up. The janarim that the girl had not noticed was pacing the fence and had backed up far enough that he would probably make it over to protect his chosen mistress. Oh my gods he hadn't had anything this exciting happen while bonding people in years. He vaguely wished he had another tea to enjoy this moment. The girl was a verified lodestone for critters and he hadn't seen it coming. He had thought she would attract a nice calm lizard but instead the shy little brown one had attracted two of the most dominant snaptrotters and there went the janarim over the fence. He was flabbergasted and stood with his mouth open. He should maybe get in there but deep down he knew they would not hurt her, but there were no rules against hurting each other.
Thallassa sent out a piercing whistle that would summon Myr. Desperate times called for desperate measures after all.

There was a blast of hisses and spits on one side of her as the big blue male pressed his long toothy snoot to her palm. He had obviously chosen and she was very flattered. However about that moment a large green shape shoved her blue male out of the way and growled and snarled like he had insulted her honor.
Vaia was startled and stumbled back and it was fortunate she did because a massive red janarim crowded between her and the now dueling snaptrotters. Thal had promised that the critters wouldn't hurt her..but hadn't this been a pen of snaptrotters? This was obviously not one and he growled in his own gutteral way at the two combatants. What was even going on now? "Thal?!" She called out. They might hurt her if they forgot she was there. The blue snaptrotter was fighting for position trying to get between Vaia and the green female who was quite jealous. But the big red janarim blocked his way with his own frame and disaproving gaze. He was broadside to Vaia and she was brave for the first time ever and placed both her palms on his side. This was the one. She knew. She thought the blue male might be an option as well.

"Hang on kid! I'm coming!" Myr had raced from his nearby paddock, he had always known how to open gates he just chose not to most of the time. He appeared at Thal's side sides heaving with the run over. Thall leapt aboard and was over the fence in no time, splitting the herd of snaptrotter to get to the heart of the issue. They all mostly respected Myr as he was a large boy.
He arrived next to Vaia and pulled her up behind him, calming the situation somewhat as the object of the critters desire had been moved off a ways. Hopefully this would allow tempers to cool somewhat. At least he hoped so.
"Good job remaining calm like that. I haven't seen three critters choose spontaneously like that but well, I can get you a good deal on all three if that is something you are interested it. We know they would be going to a good home and with a line backer line up like that no one would mess with you again once the green and blue got over their dislike of each other." She had come for one, but the three that had chosen were unlikely to choose anyone else besides her for a while. If there was one thing he knew, it was that a dramatic display like that which had just happened came from a potential strong bond.

She had no choice but to cling to Thal as Myr moved them out of the way. The red janarim followed loyally while the blue snaptrotter who was larger than the scrappy female finally got her pinned and asserted his dominance in this particular situation. The female knew she was beat and lay limp after a great deal of hissing.
She was fine, she would get revenge at a later date for being embarrassed in front of her chosen bonded.
"Oh all three? Well I would have to get permission from Mom but if three giant critters is three times the confidence then I think she will agree. I don't have much coin though." Her brow furrowed and she patted Myr's smooth hide in thanks for his help in getting her out of that sticky situation.
"I wouldn't mind all three but how do I keep the two snaptrotters from fighting all the time?" She was concerned as it had not been a gentle fight either. The two snaptrotters had small scrapes and were still panting. The blue had moved off after them and the red janarim. The female green took her time getting up but also followed after.

"I can speak with your Mother, I am sure that she will come around. As for the pair of snaptrotters I think that once they learn that they can share you with the janarim and that you love everyone, most of their fuss will come down. They might even chose each other as a mate over time. Its a territorial dispute over you really. I wouldn't worry about the long term though, with enough time and training they will be fine." His experience told him so, though rarely some critter grudges were for life, animals as a rule were more forgiving than people.
"Good job attracting three, not many in my family would be able to pull that many and one yet from a different field. That red janarim nosing your leg has rejected about twelve potential matches, and the blue snaptrotter five. The green has refused everyone except Ushiwa who trained her. She is a baleful thing but a warrior princess in her own right, she is actually one of Myr's daughters."

"She is his daughter?" Obviously she had gotten her attitude from her dame then, as Myr was perfectly well behaved so far as she could see. "Thanks, I'm sure Mom will listen to you, I would love to have all three." No one would bully her again, not that many did. But three critters had to be good for her self esteem once they behaved. She patted the red janarim's snout. So far the only one she hadn't touched to seal the bond had been the green female so when Thal got to a far point of the field and got off, Vaia waited for the female to come up to her and patted her snoot as well. So far as she was concerned now they were all hers. She too thought it likely her mother would say yes. Critters were fun and her Mom loved animals, she didn't think her Dad would mind either.
"And to think I was worried I wouldn't be able to find one and would have to report back to my family empty handed." Those fears had been foolish she realized now. The ranch was full of critters and they hadn't even gotten past the first pen.
