Rylafein Del'Armgo, last survivor of Planet Pyrrhus, once called Son of Murder, did not sulk. At least, not if you asked him. He brooded, perhaps, but he did not sulk.

So, of course, even if he might be perceived as sulking over his oatmeal the morning after his argument with Imnolu about their various methods, he was nor doing that. Because he didn't sulk. No matter how sulky he looked stirring his breakfast.

It wasn't that he regretted what he'd said, or anything he'd done. No, not by far. He knew he was right, and he knew he'd made the right choice.

It was just....he had so few people left. Feuding with one of them, especially his cousin, was...unpleasant.

Also, they lived together, and that would likely make things awkward at some point. Briefly, Ryla contemplated retreating to his room with his breakfast. Maybe that would save him an unpleasant conversation.

Liánlí Huáng was blessed with being a morning person. Maybe he hadn’t really figured it out until after college, but that hadn’t been his fault. Well, the parts involving him and Hayden getting up to some Shenanigans at Harvard had been kind of his fault, but other, different parts hadn’t been. Either way, the important thing in all this was that Liánlí knew now that he was a Morning Person. Knowing this about himself meant more possibilities waited for him each day.

By the time he came bouncing into the kitchen for breakfast, Liánlí had been up for a while. He’d taken Táotáo out, then gone for a run himself. Fairly fresh from the shower, he had his hair tied in a messy ponytail rather than his usual braid. Wrapped in simple black leggings and one of Huan-ge’s flannel shirts—a nice blue one, heavy and warm and oversized on Liánlí—he had a song stuck in his head. This was often the case. Today, it was bright and energetic, uptempo and poppy, simple fun.

Radiating positive energy and singing along, Liánlí bobbed his head in time with the tune as he went about gathering an assortment of flour, oils, eggs, vegetables, and crackers. Don’t you want me like I want you, baby? Don’t you need me like I need you now? Sleep tomorrow but tonight go crazy~! All you gotta do is just meet me at the……”

Liánlí planned to start the chorus, but turning around from one of the cabinets, he finally noticed—“Oh, hey, Ryla! You okay?” Liánlí tilted his head at Ryla and his oatmeal. “Can I tempt you with some jian bing, or are you good with your oatmeal? I was gonna make mine and Huan-ge’s vegetarian, but I don’t mind making some with meat for you.”

Imnolu woke slowly that morning, groaning when he realized he was, in fact, awake, and that he wouldn't be getting any more sleep today. Last night had been awful. Sleep reused to bless him with its presence, and then when his body finally gave up, nightmares plagued him. Watching Rylafein kill that man right in front of him had conjured up more and more maddening scenarios until he woke.

Sighing, he crawled out of the bed and dressed in the modified lounge clothing he had for being at the house in his natural, alien form. Ugh, his tail felt gross. And so did the rest of him. He needed to bathe.

His stomach growled.

Right. Breakfast first, then. At least he didn't smell.

He shuffled into the kitchen, stiffening when he realized Ryla was in there. And Lianli. So it'd be one of those mornings, then. He nodded to Lianli and completely ignored Ryla as he moved towards the cabinets where the instant oatmeal mix he liked was.

....Even ignoring Rylafein for all of twenty seconds crushed his heart too much, tail slowly sliding between his legs.

"Good morning," he finally said quietly, turning around to give them both an awkward smile that felt more like a grimace.

At least Lianli could never possibly sneak up on someone. Even thinking about other things like Ryla was, when he arrived singing, wearing clothes that were far too big for him--Huanxi's, no doubt--it wasn't exactly startling. Ryla looked up, and nodded briefly to acknowledge him.

"I'm fine," he said, "but that does sound good, I--"

Ah.

There was Imnolu. He looked miserable, and Ryla felt a sharp pang of something that was probably thoroughly guilt-adjacent. Ugh, he hated that, feeling bad didn't serve anyone, but it wasn't like he could just wish it away.

"Actually, don't worry about it," he said, and he stood up. "I'm not that hungry."

Things were looking up-adjacent, Liánlí thought, when Ryla started tentatively accepting the offer of eggy, savory crepes. Then, Imnolu wandered in, looking utterly miserable. It could’ve been that he just didn’t sleep very well, but seeing him stiffen at the sight of Ryla made Liánlí purse his lips. The discomfort did not ease, seeing the way that Imnolu initially ignored Rylafein (which??? did not make sense??? they were family who actually liked each other, right??? they had certainly seemed that way since Ryla and Heibing had brought Imnolu home???), nor the way that he was clearly forcing a smile.

“No, wait,” Liánlí said before he could stop himself. Whatever was going on here, he didn’t know the first thing, but would space really help? When the problem, at least right now, certainly seemed to involve not talking to each other. “Ryla, it’s okay. Imnolu’s okay, right?” Liánlí looked to Imnolu and hoped that he would agree. Didn’t really know what he would do if Imnolu didn’t agree, honestly. “It’s—I was gonna make some more substantial breakfast than the instant oatmeal, if you wanted some, Imnolu?”

There. Food brought people together and solved problems, right?

Imnolu swallowed, clutching the stupid packet of oatmeal to his chest. "I..."

He glanced at Rylafein, uncertain. Murderer. Murderer. Murderer. The refrain echoed in his head.

But how many lives had he saved by putting down those who would do harm to the universe?

How many of those lives could've been changed?

They'd never know. Who was right and who was wrong. The paths of time that could've been taken, but were now closed off.

"Not... eating... well.... wouldn't do anyone any good," he agreed.

He still loved his cousin. That would never change. And if Ryla tried to say he wasn't hungry, Imnolu planned to frown quite fiercely at him.

"It...." Ryla stopped. Gods, he hated this. And now there was someone else in the middle of whatever was happening with him and Imnolu.

But he was also sort of outnumbered, and if he upset Lianli too much, he'd probably annoy Huanxi, and that wan't on his to-do list, so he dropped back in his chair.

"I can hang around until you're done cooking and then get out of everyone's way," he said, which seemed like a reasonable compromise. "Imnolu probably doesn't want to hang around me right now."

Was that sort of a shot? Yes. But he was also fairly certain it was true.

“I mean, I think that’s fair, if it’s what you want,” Liánlí said to Ryla’s notion of a compromise. It wasn’t fair for only one person here to put in any effort at meeting each other halfway, after all. Reaching for the container where he kept his ready-made crispy crackers (he’d needed them for another recipe the other night, and they were easily made by deep-frying wonton wrappers from one of the high-quality specialty markets in town), he looked to Imnolu next. “And if that’s okay with you? Also, do you want meat in your jian bing?”

Whatever Imnolu’s answer was, Liánlí could adapt easily. His large, cast iron pan—which was technically for making crepes, but eh, it could adapt—would feed everyone who’d let him have the chance. He had several diced ingredients ready in the fridge, from the scallions that would be on everyone’s jian bing, to the mixed vegetables and herbs that Huan-ge favored, to bacon, ham, and crab meat that he liked to use in recipes for Ryla and Heibing (or just allow them to use if they had something in mind they wanted to do). Nothing was going to be awkward and bad. Everyone was going to be happy, well fed, and fine.

“Anyway, why wouldn’t he want to be around you,” Liánlí asked as he measured out and filled a bowl with his different flours, both earnestly hoping to resolve whatever all of this was between Ryla and Imnolu without anybody getting hurt, or storming out, or giving each other the cold shoulder in ways that made everybody else uncomfortable. Taking a whisk to the mixture, he explained, “I mean, I’m not gonna enjoy being around my da-ge when he has time to come down here for some important talk about money or whatever, but neither of you is anything like my da-ge.”

Although he was being glib about it, the situation Liánlí spoke of was really pretty serious. Ever since he and Xiuying had found each other, at the emergency room after Corvina had messed up and Kaifeng had taken a nasty whang to the head, The Family had been seeping back into Liánlí’s life. With his da-jie, her husband, and the girls, that was perfectly lovely. But it also meant learning that Huang Zhiming, Liánlí’s grandfather, had passed away while he’d been out of contact with the family, and Qiang-er, the da-ge in question, needed to make time to come to Destiny City and sort out <******** or other with Liánlí so all the siblings could finally get their inheritances.

Which was gonna be for the best ultimately, but also eugh, needing to deal with da-ge and all of the stuck-up, off-putting garbage ways he liked to treat people. No wonder he still didn’t have anyone interested in marrying him, honestly.

Ryla's comment felt like an arrow to the chest. His jaw shook. Yes, they'd had a horrible fight, but... He squeezed his eyes shut briefly to fight back the tears. Ryla was his cousin. He didn't have anyone else besides Heibing left from the old days. Ryla's husband was gone. His own husband and son were gone. What the hell was he even doing?

"Meat's fine, thanks," he said softly to Lianli as he sat down across from Ryla.

"...We had a bad fight last night That's all." He inhaled slowly. "I, uh..."

He didn't know what to say. He just... didn't. What he wanted was to forget last night had happened and give Ryla a hug and wag his tail. But no. Not today. Or any day, if this kept up like this.

Ryla looked between Lianli and Imnolu, and sighed, heavily. Of course Imnolu wasn't going to explain what was going on. He probably didn't want to think about it.

Once again, the dirty work was left to Ryla.

"Imnolu objects to my methods for handling your world's Chaos infection," he said, flatly. "That being, eradicate it where you find it." He waved his spoon, face flat and voice barely inflected. "There's no compromise with Chaos. It eats worlds. But Imnlou has always been more of a greet the world with open arms kind of person. So we're having a philosophical disagreement."

Sure, that wasn't all of it. But it was enough that Lianli would hopefully get the idea.

"Anyway, I killed some Chaos b*****d last night after we got a starseed back from him, and we had a fight about that."

The awkwardness was still hanging around the kitchen, but as Imnolu took a seat, Liánlí held hope in his heart that things would start looking up now. The cousins were sitting together, and Liánlí was making food, and everyone would eat it and be happy, because they would remember how much they loved each other.……and then, as he worked on mixing up the batter for the jian bing, the truth came out.

Liánlí winced sympathetically over Imnolu admitting to the fight. And he let out a hiss as Ryla admitted to what the fight was about.

“Well……that explains the awkwardness, yeah,” Liánlí agreed, then took a deep breath and looked for where he’d set down the cooking oil that he needed. “It’s kind of a complicated situation, isn’t it? Like, a lot of the people around here who’ve been infected with Chaos, they are unrepentant and pretty happy that way?” Or, well, maybe not always happy, but at the very least, they didn’t want to change.…… Not that Liánlí was thinking very specifically of any particular exceptionally flaming General-Sovereigns who did not, in his opinion, appreciate how much one of Liánlí’s friends cared about them.

“And honestly, I can understand why the ‘kill the problem before it becomes a bigger problem’ sort of approach worked during the Silver Millennium,” he said, and glanced over one shoulder at Imnolu, with an apologetic expression. “Not that I have all the information or anything? But those of us who are, uh, reincarnationally challenged or whatever? We can access memories from our past lives when we go to our homeworlds or Wonders, as in my case. And one of the first ones I got back from Xingyi was of him having to kill someone. Another group like the one you guys and Heibing had, his cousins ran with them and they didn’t take care of a problem. Not until one of their friends was on death’s door, and the options were letting her die slowly and painfully……or taking her to the Saturn Knight they had an in with, and asking him to give her a peaceful death. Sometimes, it is a situation where there isn’t a good choice.

However,” he added, looking over the other shoulder at Ryla, “there are options for handling the people infected with Chaos, these days. I know you and Heibing have met Murikabushi, and he used to be with one of the Chaos options, the Dark Mirror Court. If you’ve seen Kerberos around North End Park—long blue hair, kinda dancery vibe, asphodels growing all around him and he’s got the glowy marks that say he Transcended? I don’t know his whole story, but Muri says he was with the Negaverse before he got out. It’s called purification, and……well. Muri also says it’s apparently very dramatic for Dark Mirror senshi, but?”

Liánlí shrugged, turning back to his work. He had a pan to get oiled up and heated. “I don’t know how much of that drama is on the process being kind of a lot and how much is on Murikabushi just being kind of a dramatic person in general, y’know? Like, maybe it’s easier for other senshi who leave the Dark Mirror Court, but he made his process a whole production because that’s how he is? Either way, we’ve got a lot of Princesses in town who can help save somebody who wants to leave Chaos behind, so……y’know. Killing might be justified sometimes, but we do have other options worth considering, too.”

Imnolu narrowed his eyes at Ryla. Of course that was how he'd explain it. Couldn't just leave the problem alone for a few minutes, nope, had to drag it out into the open right away.

But as Lianli rambled, Imnolu paid attention, tail slowly coming into a wag. "So you can cleanse the Chaos from a person's soul!" he said triumphantly. "They are saveable! We just need Princesses! Why don't we just, I don't know, start kidnapping Lieutenants and saving them, then?"

His tail began to wag faster. "We can reduce the amount of killing we have to do by far!"

Well. That was new information. Ryla tilted his head to the side, resting his cheek on his chin and stirring his spoon in the still-barely-touched bowl of oatmeal.

"The Nameless, they called themselves, right?" Ryla clicked his tongue, and smiled wryly. "We had some run-ins, once upon a time. Same line of work, you can imagine how it went." He shrugged. "Anyway, these are really the first people infected with Chaos I've ever seen. If there's a way to fix it, great."

He shook his head, a little.

"But there's never been many Royal Senshi. You can't tell me they're all accessible all the time. And I'm not going to apologize for taking the straightforward solution to people who clearly don't value life." He huffed, and turned his attention to his breakfast. "People like you and Imnolu are better suited to that saving people thing than I am, anyway."

There! Things were starting to calm down and look up, a bit. Maybe Ryla was still brooding, but as Liánlí flicked a bit of water at the pan to check how it was heating up, he was willing to accept brooding. The sizzling hiss of steam said that the pan was ready, and Ryla was just naturally predisposed to brooding, Liánlí had noticed. It made him an ideal person for sharing some of the music Liánlí couldn’t share with most other people, like Loreena McKennit’s murder ballads or assorted death metal bands with ******** up real life stories about how the lead singer got messed up on LSD and cannibalized the drummer or whatever.

Liánlí said nothing as he first lowered the heat on the stove, then poured in the batter for the first jian bing. But once he had the batter spread out into a nice, flat pancake shape, he said “Accessibility is a fair point, Ryla. As I’ve heard from Muri, purifying him and his cousin at the same time was quite exhausting for Princess Ida. I’m not sure what Princess Ganymede and Princess Cybele have experienced while doing purifications, but they’re around too and purifying people might take a lot of them as well. And if there isn’t a princess around, people sometimes call on Cosmos herself, apparently? But that’s still all kinds of complicated in its own right because, like, what if you need her and she doesn’t show up, right?”

Pausing a moment, Liánlí ladled some beaten egg from a bowl onto the crepe. “But, y’know, it takes all kinds, right? The fact that the Order-Chaos cosmic war has gone on for so long seems to indicate, to me, that we can’t win against Chaos by only taking one approach. So, like, we need both people who can do the unpleasant work of killing when it’s necessary and people who can reach out to the folks we can save from Chaos less violently……or at least, that’s how I see it.”

Which might have been better said by looking at either of them directly, but Liánlí had to add the ham, cheese, and scallions to the jian bing for Ryla or Imnolu, whoever decided to take it first.

Imnolu's tail didn't cease wagging. It slowed, sure, but it didn't stop.

"Okay, so it'll be tough, but! As long as we can try, that's really important," he said with stubborn cheeriness. "I knew it couldn't just be that depressing."

He grinned cheekily at Ryla, scooting his chair closer to his cousin. "Sooo, can we agree that sometimes you're right and sometimes I'm right?" he asked as he slung his arm over Ryla's shoulders. "Maybe we should keep patrolling together to balance ourselves out, huh?"

The idea of killing still made him queasy. He didn't think he'd be able to do it, in the same way Ryla clearly didn't think he could save someone, or decide someone was worth the try. Maybe they could figure it out together. He'd just... have to get comfortable with the killing.
