Seldom did he visit Destiny City without the express intent to fight something. Rarer still did he take a jaunt in the city looking for someone of the Dark Mirror Court. He was, however briefly, reminded of experiences that he did not want to relive.

But rather than stew in such thoughts, he moved. Dressed in his General's regalia, he darted across districts quickly, auric senses ever on the alert. He had skirted a smattering of White Moon auras and a few Negaverse auras, mainly the lower ones in the rank and file, but he hadn't yet encountered one of the most elusive ones. And while his motivation soon turned to boredom, Faustite kept up the search by busying himself with increasingly complicated jumps between buildings. However, there could only be so many corkscrews and somersaults before he stumbled on a landing and nearly fell on his a**.

His recovery sent a wave of gravel skittering across the roof. However, he was met with a touch of luck — he felt a Dark Mirror Super nearby.

Pacing toward the parapets, Faustite peered over each one for signs of a wraith. The streets on either side were largely devoid of life, however; at this late hour, only a couple cars chased by and no one lingered on the sidewalks. It was dark enough, too, that spotting a super senshi in their dark, drab colors may prove a challenge.

Or, it would have been, had he not spotted someone in curiously artful trappings walking out of a building. Bass followed him until the heavy door swung shut, muffling it once again. Faustite summoned Headache, and the litany of fireflies buzzed about to settle on his shoulder and pauldron. He wasn't certain from the back of that senshi, but he thought —

A blink, and he was facing the senshi at conversational distance. Oh, right, it was that one. He burned that one's hair off, once. Stink of it wouldn't wash out of his hands for a couple days, either.

Fetch your prince, he signed, and the fireflies on his shoulders glowed in patches as they verbalized their master's command.

He'd learned, over time and with the increasing amount to which he cared about supporting his Mirror, his Court, and his existence as Hybris, to know when he was too much in the moment when draining. Too likely to let the wraiths draw too much, too quickly. Wraiths more likely to be endangered by his distraction. He learned when to leave instead of cause problems, which was surely some kind of character growth he'd never sought for himself, but there it was. So Hybris was only slightly undone as he left the club, cravat hanging loose, collar only slightly open to reveal a few small bruises, hair a messy tumble of curls escaping a barely there ponytail.

Breathing in the night air, he felt easy and relaxed, his mind mind slowly clearing as the tide of bodies ebbed and disappeared behind him. Even the presence of the negaverse, a general? Didn't trace too much tension down his spine.

And then, abruptly, his body was nothing but tension. The warm, shifting light of his nightmares stood in front of him, painting him over in bright hues while the happy and smug senshi was replaced by frozen, animal panic alongside the sticky twist of morbid fascination. And then...

Oh. An order. A use. He'd live.

The voice was...wrong, was Faustite throwing it? It was the sort of trick Hybris would normally delight in, maybe still would. For now, he simply responded, his own voice as mild as always. "Yes, of course." Along with learning when to leave, this boy had once very clearly shown Hybris when to not run.

He lowered his eyes to his compact, covering the fear and hot, jittery something else in his gaze with a gentle sweep of lashes. "Good evening, Prince Remarque. General King Faustite would like to speak with you. We're in the alleyway behind the club Urban Collapse, in the north eastern downtown district."

The message was clear, polite, and full of nothing but necessary information.

Hybris, again? Hadn’t they just talked about the merits of laying low and staying out of trouble? Was it Remarque’s imagination or did he look tense? No, he seemed stiff. Sounded stiff.

A General King didn’t just show up unless there was a problem, and if Faustite would like to speak with him, he didn’t imagine this was a social meeting. It probably had something to do with the mounting array of strange things happening.

Hopefully. He really didn’t want to find out that something else was going on.

“Is that so? What a small world, I was hoping to arrange a meeting.” Remarque didn’t seem like he was in a hurry but he was moving as he answered. He didn’t need to explain that he was in Mirrorspace, he’d be there quickly enough. Best not to leave Hybris alone for long, anyway.

“Seems like fortune favors us tonight. Let’s hope we stay as lucky in the future.”

An aura manifested two streets over; he’d passed from Mirrorspace through one of the many mirrors tucked away and in the process shifted from Prince to Eternal. He stayed on the compact the whole time, until the two of them came into view, and took a brief opportunity to look them both over. Remarque raised a hand in greeting as he snapped the compact shut and dismissed it back to subspace. “Did you want to have this meeting out here, or would you rather move somewhere a bit more accommodating?”

At least it followed orders. Faustite let out a smoky sigh. Now there would undoubtedly be a wait — such was the stipulation when the other party couldn't teleport.

In the interim, Faustite gave up on watching the club door to look at the Mirror Twink. Looked a margin disheveled. Had some bruises like he found himself a spot of fun inside. Faustite wondered if that meant the wraith they used was unsupervised, darting between people like a spastic shadow. This one might not have been draining at all — just using the melodramatic outfit to find a good time.

The more he looked, the more he realized that this one was actually quite attractive — which was almost unfair. He disliked and distrusted the Court; the last member that he had a fondness for bailed for the unflagging ineptitude of the White Moon. Faustite thought he was free to hate the Court as much as he wanted now. He didn't need ******** feelings telling him otherwise.

Faustite's attention went back to the door as he wished someone would pop out, if only for a short distraction. He could drain them, turn this meeting into something productive, and finish out their wait with a few extra energy orbs. No one showed, though; he was stuck out here with a boy that looked cuter by the minute.

He snorted. Then came the stark, blanketing aura of a Dark Mirror Royal, however briefly.

Faustite shifted, arms crossed, to survey the incognito Prince as he arrived. He hadn't kept them waiting for long, to Faustite's benefit.

Headache echoed what he signed. "Not here." Not that he wanted to deal with ******** Mirrorspace, but there was no other option if they all wanted privacy from the White Moon's prying eyes — and Destiny City's denizens with their astonishing lack of self-preservation.

As always, his mirror prince sounded calm and in control of things. He even kept the compact call open, which was very reassuring but not so much that he felt up to his typical idle chatter with either him or the general king. Especially a general king that seemed increasingly annoyed by something. Was it the club? Did he hate it here? Did he like it anywhere? Being on fire likely made the world fairly uncomfortable, afterall. Had Murikabushi mentioned that during one of his my little meow meow talks?

Thinking of it, his friend had mentioned Faustite being present when describing his abduction. It just hadn't stood out at the time, as Muri's voice had lacked the usual breathy admiration and heart-filled empathy that came along with the name. Risking another glance over, his eyes picked out the small, moving lights across the general kings shoulders. It took a moment to recognize them as the fireflies that he'd seen before. The youma with his magic.

Doing his best to appear very demure, very mindful, Hybris still couldn't resist glancing over again and again, suddenly intensely curious. Thankfully Remarque's aura was soon felt, keeping Hybris's questions in check.

The snap of the prince's compact mirror was like the breaking of a spell, releasing Hybris of all tension to the point where his posture went noticeably looser. he let out a sigh like he'd been holding his breath and then quickly shut up. As the two discussed where to go, he once again glanced at the moving lights along Faustite's pauldron, realizing that the voice was coming from them.

Were they going to Mirrorspace? It'd be nice to observe things in a place he felt a million times less likely to be set on fire.

“Good call,” he said, as if there had really been much of a choice. He hadn’t imagined Faustite would be much for the club scene, and it was too busy here to trust that they’d have a productive, private, conversation.

Unattached to the location, he’d already half turned to depart for the mirror he’d just come from. He walked at a slightly slowed pace to allow the others to catch up if they wanted, but he didn’t seem to mind if they followed instead.

His exposed back could have easily have been as much a sign of trust as it was confidence.

“It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I was wondering what you’d been getting up to. I’d say it’s good to see you but I’m guessing this isn’t a social call.” Faustite didn’t seem like a beacon of excitement and he’d never come across as much of an extrovert. Remarque wasn’t ignoring Hybris, who was surprisingly quiet, he just thought it prudent to fill the silence before it could breed tension.

“The mirror’s not too far from here, I’ll walk you through. Hybris, we’ll meet in the Common Room. Fair bit of warning, Mirrorspace is being a bit odd of late. A few members of my Court have told me the mirrors are misfiring.” Maybe it was the truth, or maybe he was just trying to give Hybris an out if he wasn’t comfortable sticking around. “I’m going to guess you and your kind are having problems of your own?”

Hybris was all but forgotten as Remarque started moving. Faustite made no effort to catch up to his side; he preferred to follow the incognito Mirror Prince and train his attention on their periphery. It wouldn't do for him to lose focus and leave the lot of them vulnerable to a White Moon ambush before they reached somewhere safe enough to speak.

Headache found Hybris of lukewarm interest, however. A cluster of the fireflies adorning Faustite's shoulders had turned to examine the boy more fully. Being a Mirror Senshi raised the same disdain that it often felt in the presence of a senshi, but it was Hybris's attention that held its curiosity. It was accustomed to Faustite's adversaries watching his grate or his hands, and yet this one's attention was on Headache. An orange glow rippled across the fireflies as if through water.

If it concentrated hard enough, it might be able to mimic that one's voice someday.

Faustite signed, and after a delay, Headache spoke. "You're right, this isn't a social call. Don't have much time for those anymore."

He halted, however, when Remarque made such an alarming, yet offhanded, comment. "What do you mean 'misfiring'?" Was he going to get gunned down by walking through a mirror with Remarque? Or stranded, never to leave again? Were the mirrors breaking with people in them and instantly killing them? What the ******** was that supposed to mean, 'misfiring'? Why was there always some s**t going wrong with the Dark Mirror Court?

"Haven't had any problems. Our s**t's together. Is it still safe to use your mirrors?"

Caught between watching the youma and taking in what he considered a light show of magical politics between leaders, Hybris suddenly straightened at his name. Oh yes, he was here and somewhat part of this wasn't he? Although, Prince Remarque did seem to be giving him an out if he so chose. Really, his prince was both observant and kind in ways that Hybris was more than happy to benefit from.

Though this time...

Noting the small portion of shifting lights on Faustite's shoulder that seemed to shift with his own movements, Hybris offered them a little wave and decided it might be fun to follow and watch. At the very least, he'd have gossip for Hella and Lete later. And he'd be safe, right? With Remarque there and in the territory of the mirror.

"I think some of the changes have been rather pretty. Like having windows to go with our mirrors," Hybris offered softly. Though the view was not always pleasant, it was all truly interesting. Also, it was rather cute when the wraiths gathered around one. As they approached the mirror, he gave the youma a beckoning gesture, curious to see if part of it could split off.

Relax,” Remarque said easily, “You’ve got nothing to worry about when you’re with me. I’ll keep you safe.” He even managed not to sound too smug about the promise .Mirrorspace might have its quirks but Remarque was confident in his ability to keep things under control. He wouldn’t have offered to travel there otherwise; the last thing he needed was the Negaverse on his a** because he lost a General King.

The mirror at the end of the alley was nothing special; it was as dark as the night and blended into the corner it had been tucked away into. Most people probably wouldn’t have noticed it, which was all the better for him. It was wide enough that one person could have stepped through easily. Two wouldn’t be much trouble; Remarque would go first, anyway.

“You’ve Mirrorwalked before, haven’t you?” he asked, tilting his head slightly over his shoulder so he could peer back at Faustite. “Feels like a splash of water. It’s not uncomfortable, just don’t want to spook you if you’re not expecting it.”

He gestured for Faustite to keep himself moving closer. “The mirror’s not going to hurt you. If it ‘misfires’, it just pops you out somewhere other than where you were aiming. You get a bit of the scenic route,” he said, and nodded towards Hybris as if to acknowledge appreciation for his contribution. “Sometimes you wind up somewhere more interesting, anyway. No complaints on my end.”

'Speak only when spoken to' didn't apply to the Court's rank and file, it seemed, for Faustite shot a withering look at the Senshi of Eggplants when he spoke up about Mirrorspace's latest oddities. He didn't recall asking for opinions on the matter.

Faustite's attention shifted back to Remarque — sharply — when the Prince said to relax. Normally he'd have happily busted someone's face for telling him to relax, but when it was followed up with something as sweet as 'I'll keep you safe' (particularly from a Boy), he was immediately met with conflicting feelings. Faustite's reproach all but dissolved away in the aftermath of unwanted, burgeoning affection. Much as he tried to focus on the matter at hand, Faustite missed the question sandwiched between statements entirely.

And while he might not have had complaints about where he wound up, Faustite would be demanding a refund on his energy from Metallia herself if his teleportation 'misfired' and put him somewhere other than where he expected to be. Maybe mirrorwalking wasn't as conceptually dangerous as teleporting could be.

Surmising that he would have to hold onto Remarque for more than a fraction of a second, Faustite huffed out his incredibly unconvincing disappointment. Pulling his leather cincher from subspace, he wrapped it about his grate and fastened it with its metal clasps. Afterward, he felt only feverishly warm as he tucked closer to Remarque.

He could only guess what fresh hell Headache would give him once their meeting was over.

Listening to his prince coax the general king, Hybris continued to smile in smug contentment over his leader being simply better than most. Particularly when said general king shot him a very mean look for no reason at all. Chances were, it'd be better to continue to avoid the half youma at all costs, at least unless Hybris had a very strong escort!

Turning his eyes away from the firey one's ire, he gave a smile of intense confidence toward Remarque. There was almost a skip to his step as he followed the two into the mirror. He would be fine! It was almost as if the quietly polite and terrified boy a few minutes earlier had been someone else entirely!

Entering the mirror was, as always, refreshing! Invigorating! A tiny rebirth in the face of the destruction of worlds, forgotten and uncounted! He hoped that General King Faustite enjoyed the trip, and also that he met with something uniquely unpleasant.

In preparation for whatever surprises Mirrorspace had in store, Remarque shifted from Eternal to Prince in the split second before he stepped through the mirror with Faustite. Thankfully, Mirrorspace understood the need for an uneventful travel; when Remarque stepped through the mirror, he instinctively raised one wing as if to shield Faustite–and Hybris, if he walked close enough–as they passed from Destiny City into the realm of mirrors.

The Common Room welcomed them with a familiar sight–pale white walls, with faint trails of smoke clinging to the ceiling. A tall, golden framed mirror was visible in front of them, and to the left, the dark floor to ceiling doors that led to the Throne Room.

While the doors were closed, the mirrors seemed lively enough to distract.

Three wraiths scurried across the room with little more than an echo of glass on marble; they leapt through a mirror hung low to the ground before Remarque could even get a good look at them. A quick scan of the area indicated no major immediate issues, but he noticed two dark mirrors on the far wall. He gave Hybris a brief look, just to make sure he was okay, and perhaps to silently invite his attention to the mirrors.

“Here we are,” Remarque said confidently, and though he released Faustite he didn’t step further away. It wasn’t easy to travel with a youma made of fireflies, not when there wasn’t anything to grab, but he assumed if they didn’t make it along, Faustite could have summoned them easily enough.

Mirrorspace was pleasantly cool, maybe something welcome given how warm Faustite was.

“Would you like a chair or a look around?” he offered, finding no issue playing the role of obliging host. “Whatever’s most comfortable to you, I know you had something important to talk about?”

Faustite leaned toward Remarque when one of those great, dark wings came up like a closing door. He could only remain so close, however, for his own heat was something intolerable to most. There was something delightful about being so protected in a manner so preciously rare, and he was almost glad for the sensation of water, for it prompted him to hold his breath through the transition (and not sigh wistfully or swoon into Remarque's arms).

Unfortunately, the other boy was along for the ride. Respectfully, he stayed quiet.

When they were in a relatively static-looking room, Faustite regretfully had to peel himself away for reasons of appearance. He did, however, recoil visibly when Remarque mentioned a tour. "Absolutely not," Faustite signed immediately. "Would rather deep throat a ******** fire extinguisher."

Then, as an afterthought, "No offense."

All of the offense was aimed at Mirrorspace. Provided, of course, that the offense made no impact on what he would potentially ask of it. He squinted at the movement in his periphery, even if he didn't catch sight of what made to pass them so quickly. Wraith or something else, he wasn't certain he cared to know. The sooner they concluded their business, the sooner he could leave and never return.

"I need to know if Mirrorspace can make a copy of this." In one hand, he summoned the strange spike he obtained from their austere foray into the storm. He held it out for Remarque to examine at his leisure.

Following behind the two leaders, Hybris idly thought that if he was in the general king's mismatched shoes, he'd faint a little and set the prince carrying him. Though sadly, Faustite likely wouldn't cherish the chance and would rather set those glorious wings on fire. Tsk tsk.

Exiting into the Common Room, Hybris's eyes immediately went to the two mirrors holding the charming oddities he'd begun to look forward to. Meeting Remarque's gaze, he beamed at what seemed like permission to go get a closer look while talks continued.

Giving Faustite's collective youma a smile of invitation, Hybris made his way to the mirrors. "Hello ~ " he cooed softly, as he often did to the reflections found in Mirrorspace.

Remarque accepted the spike even as he glanced at Hybris, whose words seemed for himself more than because he’d found some spectre in the mirror. Too bad, he might have liked to find someone who could explain what was going on.

Instead, Hybris was greeted with darkness–and a rapidly blossoming scene. In one mirror, there were the dark silhouettes of a round world and what might have been a moon, but a shadow covered them with such. Whatever cast the shadow was just out of sight. Slowly, as it drifted through space, the planet seemed to come to life. The moon was a dull grey, but the world was pink, with iridescent clouds. The entire world looked like it glimmered, in sharp contrast to the darkness of space around it.

The spike felt the same in his hand as Murikabushi’s had, and if they’d been side by side, he didn’t think he could have told them apart.

“A copy, maybe,” Remarque mused, still turning this over in his hands. “But it won’t do you any good outside of Mirrorspace.”

He gestured with his hand, and as expected, Mirrorspace summoned a replica. It took a few tries to get the shape correct, but the color was all wrong and matched the walls and floor, like it was all that Mirrorspace could do to get the shape and texture right. He held onto the real one but passed the false one to Faustite to inspect.

“What are you thinking of doing with this?” he asked, lifting the spike just slightly.
