Since attending that gathering of her fellow Order-aligned…colleagues?
Was that the right word for it?
Rowan still wasn’t entirely sure on the terminology here, but she couldn’t deny the surge of energy that coursed through her after realizing that it could be possible to create stronger alliances between them. This excited energy, however, was tempered slightly by the awareness of her own shortcomings when it came to skills she could actually apply here. Eagerness on its own was unfortunately not quite enough when it came to putting in the actual work, so when her research turned up coding classes offered by the public library she jumped at the opportunity to gain at least a bit of knowledge that might be useful to the rest of their team.
She had no illusions of being able to produce something at the same level as the Mauvians, but if she and the others could pool what they knew, she was certain that they would be able to make something to aid their cause. (And if she was particularly lucky, their fuzzy adorable allies would be willing to add an extra layer of security to whatever they made.)
It would only be a few months until she graduated from DCU and Rowan promised herself that she would charge wholeheartedly into this new technological endeavor over the summer. For now, she was willing and able to build what she hoped would be a solid foundation.
With a brief stop at the library’s hold shelf she gathered up the two hundred or so (OK fine, more like eight) books she’d requested on the subject, all but running to the self-checkout before shoveling them into her bag and hurrying to the classroom.
As the young woman walked into the library’s computer lab, she looked around. There were quite a few people already there and she found it reassuring that she wasn’t the only absolute beginner, even if she suspected that her reasons for taking the class were probably unique among this group.
Hey, it was impossible to be entirely certain, right?
A gracelessly tired drop into the nearest workstation brought her face to face with the terrifying specter of using math for something other than music. Channeling the nervous tapping of her fingers into the keyboard, Rowan performed a flurry of anxious internet searches on the subject and checked the library’s class schedule four or five times to make sure that she was in fact in the right place.
After a few minutes in limbo a young man with pale blonde hair strode quickly into the room, “Apologies for being a couple minutes late, this raccoon wouldn’t get off the hood of my car and I had to throw some peanuts to lure him away.” Smiling slightly at the soft ripple of laughter that crossed the room, the instructor turned his attention to the computer beside the projector screen and logged himself in.
Rowan clicked over to the Word document she’d set up for note taking and hoped she wouldn’t have too much difficulty grasping this. If something was worth doing, it was worth doing well.
