  First Year's Defense Against the Dark Arts class is held at 3:00pm Located on Hogwarts' third floor is the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. The room is bright with the curtains of the large windows always open. The windows themselves will sometimes be open depending on the weather. At the head of the classroom, there is Professor Kim's desk and a chalkboard, which is usually full of seemingly random notes but they'll usually eventually relate to a lesson.

  Eric was ready and waiting for the new group of first years. It was always interesting to see the new personalities he’d be getting and see if there was anyone likely to cause him trouble. At least today was an easy lesson. Lumos and Nox. He didn’t quite understand why these spells were taught in Defense Against the Dark Arts and not Charms, but it was in his curriculum, so he was going to teach it. He waited for the kids to file in, and once they all seemed accounted for, he gave his best smile.
“Hello everyone, and welcome to Defense Against the Dark Arts. I’m sure a good portion of you know what you’re getting into in this class, but in case you don’t, well, the name is pretty self-explanatory. For the most part, we’ll be teaching defensive magic, as well as studying certain parts of the dark arts in hopes of teaching you how to protect yourself against them.” He then moved towards the chalkboard. “We’re starting off with a pretty easy set of spells today. Lumos and Nox. For those of you who’ve grown up in magical houses, I imagine you’ll be pretty familiar with these spells. They’re one of the base skills of magic if you ask me. For those of you who don’t know them, Lumos creates light at the tip of your wand, while Nox does the reverse. Lumos can also help reveal certain magically hidden items, though it will depend entirely on the spell used to do the hiding.” He thought for another moment before adding,“Also, supposedly, if you aren’t careful, this spell can catch your wand on fire…I have never seen that, but you know, be careful, I guess.”
Eric had all sorts of random facts in his head about this spell, but he figured the kids wouldn’t want a lecture on how the spell was invented or the surprising drama between the original inventor and someone who claimed to invent it first. He’d tell Rowan later. Supposing she didn’t already know, which, knowing his girlfriend, was a definite possibility.
“Now, everyone, raise your wands.” Eric grabbed his wand and held it in front of him. “You’re going to move your wand in a circle, sort of like a loop on a roller coaster,” he demonstrated the movement, “and say the words Lumos.” He did just that, and immediately a bright light appeared at the end of his wand. “Then, we go to Nox. For this, you’ll move your wand in the shape of a wave and say the incantation.” As he did, the light went out. “Nox is one of the easiest spells to perform non-verbally, but don’t worry about that part quite yet. Probably best to learn how to perform magic before you try it non-verbally.”
He glanced around the room, noting each student’s performance of the spell. “What I’m going to have you do now is practice these two until you feel comfortable with them. Once you are, place your wand on your desk and try it again. You should be able to light it without even holding it. If you’re feeling really ambitious, you can just keep moving it farther away and see how it goes. If you have any questions, raise your hands and I’ll come over. Let’s give it a go,” he said, dismissing them to try it on their own.
