It was Alice’s 16th birthday, and Cressida had…well. She had gone all out. Their room was decorated with these fantastic iridescent ribbons that Cressida had found, and there were balloons everywhere. A balloon arch right in front of the door and a bouquet of sixteen pristine white lilies in a vase on Alice’s night table.
There was a red velvet cake on the desk, three tiers and decorated with cream cheese frosting lilies as well.
The room looked perfect, and Cressida looked around, fixing a few things until she felt that everything was as it should be. Alice would be back in five minutes or so, and now. Cressida did what she did best.
She flopped on her bed and pulled out a book, looking and acting utterly disinterested.
Reverse surprise party was a go.

She'd felt like things were... weird, since that day studying. The kiss on her cheek had left her flustered and confused and quite, well, unsure. Cressie had been her normal self the whole time, but Alice felt like she'd missed something kinda... big. Her first idea was that Cressie was flirting with her but that was ridiculous. Alice was absolutely not Cressida's type; given the people Cressie usually went after, there's no way she'd feel that way for Alice.
Still, she often touched her cheek, remembering the chaste kiss and wondering.
Alice walked down the hall and opened their door into balloons. Everywhere. She stopped just inside the doorway as she blinked. A balloon arch floated over the door in her favorite colors. Ribbons crisscrossed the walls and ceiling with balloons hanging off them too. A vase of white lilies sat on her night table, and a cake sat on the desk.
Lilies, her favorite colors, her favorite confection.
And Cressida was laying on her bed, idly reading a book.
Emotions caught in Alice's chest and she gently caressed one of the lilies. How had she done all this, where had she hidden all this, it wasn't like Alice had been out of the room for a incredibly long time. She'd done all of this just for her birthday... for her.
Alice touched the cheek Cressie had kissed again.
"I'd, ah, ask how you hid all of this, but that might ruin the mystique of it," she said softly, looking over at Cressida with a smile that tried and failed to hide the wave of emotions that she held back. She moved across the room and pecked her cheek gently - much in the same way Cressida had done to her. "Want to split my cake with me?"
It wasn't a outright declaration that Cressida cared for her like that; just because she remembered Alice's favorite colors, flower and confection didn't mean that she was like. Into her. Like that.
Probably.

“I’d split the world with you if you asked me to.” Cressida sat up and stretched slightly, putting down the book she had been pretending to read and grinning like a pleased cat. “Thouogh, if you did ask, I wouldn’t tell you. It’s my secret, and surprising you is, has, and always will be one of my favorite things to do, Alice, so.”
Sliding off of her bed she watched her friend, eyes beginning to sparkle as it seemed as though Alice had really gotten it. Reaching out, she took hold of a small strand of the girl’s orange hair and twisted it around a finger. “You want a real kiss now, or are we going to forever be dancing like this? I don’t mind dancing. I just. I suppose I’m a little tired of it, and Alice, my birthday princess.”
She placed an arm around the girl and touched their foreheads together. “My feet are so very sore.”

Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh she was an idiot.
Cressida stood in front of her, forehead pressed against hers and she was just. Laying it out all on the table. That she didn't do this for anyone else. That she did this for her. That all the surprises and the gifts and the gestures were for her and no one else and ---
"Oh I'm such an idiot aren't I?" she said, a tear rolling down her cheeks. The tears were of happiness and joy and relief, so many damn relief she wasn't sure what how she could literally anything else except let them fall. She smiled at Cressida and giggled a little and gosh she'd called her 'birthday princess'.
Tentatively, she rested her hands on Cressie's hips. A light touch that got a little more confident, a little squeeze when Alice realized, again, that Cressida wanted this. Wanted her. Liked her.
"Yes, yes please, we can stop dancing now," she said, voice breaking a little. Then Alice closed the distance, brushing noses and kissed Cressida with all of the affection setting her heart beating like a drum. Oh goodness, oh goodness, it was everything she imagined it to be, everything she hoped it would be.
Her fingers tightened on Cressida's hips and she pulled her a little closer.

Cressida chuckled, arms wrapping tight around Alice. “Jeeze girl. I’m so glad you finally get it now. I was starting to think you’d just keep.” The tears were unexpected but she kissed them away after the initial kiss was broken, and then went back for more. “So. WIll you do me the honor of being my girlfriend? Or do I have to keep up with the grand gestures and what I thought were absolutely unsubtle hints?”
She was grinning now, her eyes bright and filled with mischief and glee.
“For the record, if you don’t say yes, I will throw you into the cake. Not that I’m trying to blackmail you into dating me but. If you say no I’ll be very sad.”

Alice giggled and kissed her again and again for a moment before pulling back so Cressida could speak. There was a glint in her eyes that had Alice giggling harder and grinning back. She was so damn happy and goodness, how could one person feel this happy? It was like she was gunna burst with happiness if Cressida kept making her giggle.
"Oh my goodness, yes Cressie! I will be your girlfriend! I've wanted to for... entirely too long now, okay?" she said and kissed her again, bringing a hand up to cup her cheek this time. She could touch her. She could kiss her.
Cressida liked her and wanted to be girlfriends, holy moly heck!
"Sorry I was so oblivious..." she said sheepishly, a blush high in her cheeks. "Just didn't think I was your type... or had a chance really..."

How this girl could not realize that she was absolutely her type was beyond her. Alice was cute. She was rich. And she had class. It was a relationship that was going to be good no matter how you looked at it, and it would do nothing but expand her reputation.
“It’s fine, I’m just glad you’ve finally realized. Now, you wanted to eat the cake, yes? Let me braid your hair back so we don’t end up getting frosting in it…I don’t really want to have to deal with helping you get it out again, it isn’t a fun time. So. Turn around baby. Lets get you all fixed up and then we can start the rest of the real celebrations.”
