xxxHattie was born in Guangzhou, China as the fourth child of a very poor family. She was immediately put up for adoption and was connected with a family in Scotland, UK. Carson and Maisie MacDougal traveled to China to pick up the still unnamed infant, whom they named Harriet. Carson is a deep sea fisherman and Maisie was a dock worker, but she retired after adopting Harriet. They had been trying unsuccessfully for ten years before adopting Hattie. As a child, she was very energetic and ran around the house all the time. Almost everyone in town knew her name from her parents often screaming it telling her to calm down. When she was six years old, she started wearing glasses and went through quiet a few pairs from her constant falls and accidents. But she was a happy child and liked to play with anyone or anything other than the seagulls, which had the habit of attacking her whenever she had snacks. The family was bewildered when someone showed up at her house on her eleventh birthday, claiming that Hattie was magical and was invited to go to a special school. Her parents were skeptical, but Harriet was enraptured by the idea.

xxxHattie was excited to start school and managed to make it most of the way through her first day without falling, but she tripped getting out of the boat and faceplanted into the wall. Within the first few weeks, Hattie had made tons of friends, even though she embarrassed herself at Culinary Club. She also met her best friend Jazzy after falling down some stairs.
xxxSecond year was more fun with her friends for Hattie. She spent a lot of time hanging out with Jazzy and even went to the Flower Dance with them. Hattie impressed Jazzy by wearing heels and her contacts. Jazzy was even more impressed by the fact that Hattie didn't fall over even once while on her heels.
