Cressida wasn’t slacking in her work…but she was…growing more behind than she enjoyed being. It was hard! She had a whole secret job to do now and sometimes, homework just took the backseat.
But. That was what her friends were for.
Right now, she sat in the library with Alice, staring at her biology worksheet that was utterly blank, but with a sigh, she moved over, wrapping her arms around the redhead and nuzzling her neck. “Alice~ My very best, most wonderful friend in the whole world…can I take a peek at your Bio worksheet? I can’t afford another fail grade…and I really would appreciate you~”
Cressie sighed and moved so that her chin was resting on Alice’s shoulder, nuzzling their cheeks together. “Pretty please? I’ll owe you a favor. I swear I will.”
Wheedling always got her what she wanted, and honestly, Cressida hoped it would still prove to be the case…she could always just…come in and steal the teachers starseed if she really fell behind…that.
Well s**t. That wasn’t a bad idea either.

Unlike Cressida, Alice did not let her homework slide. Granted, she had no secret job to keep her from her studies. Even if she did though, she wouldn’t let her homework slide. She kept reading her textbook, jotting down notes, as Cressie slid out of her chair and nuzzled into her face. She glanced at her friend, a soft little giggle in her chest. Alice adored Cressida, even if she could be a nightmare sometimes. She whined, she begged to copy her homework, but she hadn’t let her down yet.
“You know, if you stopped sneaking out through the bathroom window every other night, you might actually get some of this done,” she teased, poking her in the cheek. She did slide her worksheet to the side, already filled out in her perfect handwriting. She’d noticed that Cressie was vanishing at night on occasion, if only because she’d stumbled across her leaving while in the bathroom once.
She may have given her a judgemental look even as she waved her out and went back to bed. Alice was not the gossip monger of their group, and if Cressie didn’t want to talk about it yet, then fine. Keep your secrets. Alice will find out eventually, one way or another.
“Seriously, Cressie, copying my work isn’t going to help you on the test,” she reminded her. Copying her homework only could do so much.

“Hmm.” Cressida pressed a kiss to Alice’s cheek and began swiftly copying the answers onto her own blank page. “The tests don’t worry me. I know the concepts pretty well. I just don’t have the patience to write everything down, and you’re always so good with it~”
She didn’t comment on the accusation of leaving through the window…it was the truth. She did. Not as often as she could…or as she should, but she did. Nighttime was the easiest to get her quotas in…
Cressida had thought about talking to Borax about getting both Alice and Sibby involved too…but had thought better of it. This was her thing. Her way to pad her funds and get things going for her future. Besides…if she roped her friends in…it wouldn't be nearly as good for her. She wouldn’t be nearly as special.
And her homework would never end up getting done.
“Sometimes I just like to go on walks at night. Nothing big. It’s not like I’m meeting anyone or anything. Promise.”

Alice rolled her eyes, hair pins jingling as she shook her head. She did know that Cressida never seemed to have any issues with the tests themselves. To be honest, she detested that the other girl could slack off and copy her homework and still get top marks on tests. Alice, on the other hand, had to study for hours to barely scrape together close to the same scores. She shrugged and continued to take down notes from the textbook.
“I mean, I would think you’d bring me with you if it was something big, Cressie,” she said with a pointed little smirk and giggle. They were besties after all, and besties did everything together. Except weird stuff. Like she isn’t going to go around stabbing people even if Cressie asks her to. Unless like, Cressie was dying or something. Then Alice would use every fight skill she possessed (which was none) to protect her friend (and die in the process).
Not that it strictly mattered. Cressida could have her secrets, just as Alice did. Like the jealousy that ate at her chest, even as she said that she’s not meeting anyone. It’s greedy and slithering, but Cressida was her best friend. She wouldn’t go mess that just because she got a little envious that something seemed to keep Cressie’s attentions outside of school.

“If it were something even remotely exciting of course I’d bring you, Alice.” Cressida kept her voice gentle, as cool as possible and she chuckled, poking Alice’s cheek after a moment. “You’re really cute when you’re jealous, you know. But really, could you imagine if I was going out to meet a boy? Gross.”
There had always been the rumors of star crossed lovers, between Hillworth and Crystal, but Cressida…wouldn’t be caught dead. Now…an attractive girl from St. Mags…? Might end up being a different story, but boys? No. Boys were nowhere on her menu of things she wanted anything to do with romantically.
“Besides. I don’t need any boys, and you know it. Besides. If I wanted to take time kissing someone…if that was what I was going out for…”
Cressida trailed off, flashing Alice a look before going back to her paper and copying down a few more answers.

Alice relented, pouting at her friend. "Fine, fine. Keep your secrets~" she teased in retort. Her neck words died in her throat a little as Cressida says she's cute when she's jealous. She was not jealous! She was just... worried! For her friend's safety! That's all! Yeah.
"I mean they could be a girl, or like a non-binary person," she added hastily, feeling her cheeks burn. She did know that Cressie did not like boys. She vaguely remembered some time as younger kids with Cressie half screeching she thought boys were gross and dumb. She also knew that Cressie liked to flirt.
Yes, it was usually with someone who wasn't her. No, no, it did not bother her because they were best friends. Even if she gave a little judgemental look every time another girl got flustered in Cressida's presence. She was just looking out for her long time crush and soulmate friend! JUST. FRIENDS.
Except.
Heat flushed her chest at the look Cressida gave her before looking down at the paper again. She glanced down at her own book, twirling her hair around her fingers a little nervously. There was no reason to be nervous. It wasn't like Cressida was going to kiss her, right?
No. Because they were. Friends.

“I suppose that’s true, if I were going out to meet someone.” Really, it was no wonder that Alice had to study so hard. Cressida didn’t look back up at her until she had finished with the worksheet and then hummed softly.
“Thank you for your help, Alice. You’re a lifesaver. As always…”
With a sigh, Cressida stretched and then looked at Alice again, licking her lips and letting her eyes flicker down to Alice’s. “Is there anything I can do to make it up to you? Anything you’re…interested in maybe? Or I can help you study for the next test? That’s fair…right?”
Maybe. Hopefully. Alice would understand this time.

Alice looked at her again and frowned. “Oh, yeah. Sure.” The words died awkwardly in her throat and she went back to her book and tried to ignore the tension in the air. There was tension, right? She wasn’t just getting all in her own thoughts about it, right? Cressie didn’t look back up until she was done and handed the worksheet back to Alice.
“Of course, Cressida. Happy to help,” she said with a smile. She felt her cheeks flush against as the girl stretched, then even deeper as Cressida spoke. There was a flicker of her eyes - there was no way Cressie was looking at her mouth like that, there couldn’t be - and she licked her lips. Alice swallowed, mouth suddenly dry. Was there… something Cressie could do for her?
kiss me kiss me kiss me love me love me lo—
“I… Um… it’s…” Words completely failed her and she stared at the girl with wide eyes and flushed cheeks. She couldn’t ask that. She couldn’t ask that. Not to her. No, because they were friends and just friends and— “I… yeah maybe the biology test next week?”
You… tried Cressida. You tried.

Cressida watched Alice for a few more moments, her eyes sparkling with mischief before she finally just shook her head and then nodded. “Fair enough. Grab your notes and we can go over everything you’re confused about. We’ll make sure you ace this one.”
And while they studied, maybe she could at least get Alice to cuddle. That was something she was good at doing, and Alice always liked it…
Maybe one of these days they’d. Do something else. Maybe one of these days Alice would get it.
That day wasn’t today though, and Cressida was fine with waiting a little longer. Clearly though. Alice wouldn’t be…good. For the Negaverse. If she couldn’t even read plain signs like this? But. That was fine. Cressida wasn’t offering that branch anyway.
