As much as Ares liked home, it was always a blast to come and visit his dad's family. He had a bit more space to play on his own, without his mom worrying, and he could get some space from Eliri and just do his own thing. Almost as soon as the sun came up, he disappeared into the brush around his grandmas' home, finding the longest stick he could so he could practice his spear skills.

via Moose on Discord Coming back to Jauhar and settling hadn’t been as much of an adjustment as seeing his younger brother as a father. That…had taken some time, and while Eurig still grappled with the idea it was much easier to process now that the children were coming into their own. As little bundles they didn’t seem real, but now he could safely say his niece and nephew had him wrapped around their fingers.
Eurig hid a yawn behind his hand as he walked, the other stretching from one side of his torso to the other so the leafling could pop his back. It had been another long night and sleep had evaded him so he’d decided to come by to visit with the children and – Hadn’t he just seen Ares come this way? Between the flora and his general tiredness he’d lost track of the boy. “Ares?”

Ares had given a few testing thrusts with his makeshift spear, but stopped to look at his hands, grimacing. The bark was so smooth that without a proper grip it tried to slip from his fingers, which made it a pain to play with. He was peering at the undergrowth, hoping to luck upon something he could wrap around the pole as a handle, when his uncle's voice cut through the sounds of animals and bugs that buzzed around him.
"Here!" He called back, still not lifting his head as he sifted through the undergrowth of crystals. He heard the shuffling of plants as Eurig came closer, but didn't turn to face him yet. "Hold on - I gotta fix my spear."

via Moose on Discord “Your spear?” He shouldn’t be surprised, but Eurig’s brows still drew together as he came closer. As the boy came into view he craned his neck to get a better view of the stick and uttered a silent, exhausted, curse. Maybe he should have just stayed in bed – read a book, shaved his stubble – but now…he was already in too deep to leave.
“What’s wrong with it? Looks fine to me.” Certainly look about as spear worthy as a child could make, anyway. Was he old enough to even train with them? How old had the twins been when they started? How old was I? Ujana had started them all out with hand to hand early enough so to hear Aishans doing it earlier wasn’t as concerning as it might have been.

Mm... no. No, he wasn't supposed to be training yet. His mom was specifically against it, and had wanted him to wait to be a little older before he got a proper weapon. But he was excited to start, and if he practiced then when training started he'd be ahead of everyone!
Ares finally lifted his head, squinting at his uncle. At first, Eurig seemed doubtful, but after a moment he corrected himself, so Ares let it go. He preened, propping the end of the spear in the ground. "Well - a proper spear has a grip. So ya don't drop it." The words would be paired with an eyeroll, except he didn't have the cool earthling eyes that could do that, so instead he rolled his head as if bodily put out by Eurig's ignorance of spears. A 'duh' if it was a gesture.

via Moose on Discord “Oh, is that right?” He raised his brows, dramatically nodding his head with a surprised look. Ignoring the fact that of course Eurig knew as much about spears because his own Aishan mother wielded one, but for the sake of his nephew he could embellish a few features. Much like, say, the very same effort the boy was putting into being glib with him.
“Well, a proper spear is used by a proper warrior so yours looks about good for you then.”

(4/10) It was right! Ares nodded once, with a sense of utmost finality, and turned to jab with his makeshift spear (despite not finding a proper grip yet)- only to prickle when the older man spoke again. Puffing up he swung his body back towards Eurig. "It'll look better when I fix it." He corrected, grumpily.

via Moose on Discord "I'm sure it will." Eurig smiled and with it came a cross of genuine support mixed with condescension. If his nephew believed he could make a worthy weapon then Eurig would do all he could to make it so. However, one couldn't let the brazen attitudes of little boys go unchecked, could they?
"So you'll be tough with your spear, but what happens if you drop it? Or if someone takes it from you? What will you do then?"

(5/10) ... Drop it? Ares paused, blinking as if the prospect of dropping his weapon had never occurred to him. "I'll - I'll use my fists then!" He said, a bit shakily. He didn't really like the idea of using his hands for combat - what if one of his fingers broke because he punched so hard? He grimaced, then looked at Eurig again, sticking his stick into the dirt at his feet so that he could cross his arms.
"Stop making fun of me! You're bigger, you should help me fix it not tease me."

via Moose on Discord "Why should I? You haven't asked for my help and it's only teasing-," Eurig lowered himself so that he was crouched on his knees, bringing him a little closer to Ares' height, "-because you're getting called out. If you get riled up like this all the time you'll never be a good fighter."
Which wasn't exactly true. His mother's emotions ran wild and she was unchecked on the battlefield. Since that wasn't the kind of lesson he wanted to give, though, Eurig just offered the same warm smile he'd kept since coming out here. "How about this? I can teach you hand to hand combat and in return you'll help me with chores around the tavern. I could use some help scrubbing tables and washing dishes." He was sure he could make some kind of arrangement with the boys parents for a few days out of the week. They might even be thankful for it.

(6/10) It was... a little gratifying that the adult ADMITTED to making fun of him. Ares would have bared his teeth at him, except - he did like his uncle - he was mainly raising a fuss because he wanted to be seen as TOUGH. Instead, he turned his face petulantly away when Eurig knelt by him, jaw jut out poutily as his uncle spoke.
But then... he got an offer he hadn't expected. He turned his head back to look at Eurig again, eyes big. Scrubbing tables and dishes sounded awful. ... But - learning hand to hand combat from a guy as tough looking as EURIG? "Mm. Mom did say I couldn't have a real spear until I was older." He said, slowly. "... And I just have to clean stuff?"

via Moose on Discord "Yep; just cleaning." At least until he was strong enough to help with the bigger stuff. Eurig wasn't about to saddle a kid with moving barrels and fixing tables. "If we work on the basics and build up your core by the time you're ready to hold a spear you'll have a head start."
Which was something Eurig suspected he might need. Sentiments toward hybrids had changed since he'd been a kid, but some worldviews remained and he hadn't known Aishans to be a flexible sort. They valued strength and commitment, that much he knew, so if Ares could show them his dedication he'd be set. As much as a boy could be in the sisterhood, anyway. "But it's a trade. The moment you stop doing chores I stop teaching you."

(7/10) A head start. It sounded good. Ares chewed on his lip, thinking. He wanted to whine that Eurig was family, he should be helping him out just because of that - but even he wasn't foolish enough to recognize it as the double edged sword that it was. By that logic, HE should help at the tavern just to be nice too!
And honestly? Eurig phrasing it like a trade made Ares feel like he was being treated seriously, and once again he puffed up proudly as he nodded, eagerly. "Then - then yeah! I want - I want you to help me." He admitted, blushing a bit as he sucked back his pride enough to ask for help, like Eurig had suggested he do earlier.

via Moose on Discord Eurig's smile brightened. He wanted to reach out and ruffle his nephew's hair, just as he had when he was smaller, but...Well, he'd already made so many strides so why push him back?
"Sounds good. I'm excited; the last two I helped train was your dad and your Aunt Ika. Maybe one day you'll even be able to beat her." That one was definitely a stretch. Ika was...Eurig didn't want to ponder it. Ujana trained and fought for the thrill of it; Ika dedicated her life to it and trained as if war would break out any day. She was more than a little daunting on a good day but maybe...maybe Ares really could outseat her?
"It's a little late to get started on training, but we could work on a plan over lunch? If you're hungry."

(8/10) Ares' eyes lit up at that, staring up at Eurig without the grumpy resentment of minutes ago, and instead with something closer to hero worship. Somehow, it had never occurred to him that EURIG had taught his dad! He thought Gramuja had!
And now he was being offered food? Whatever offense the kid had taken was completely forgotten in lieu of Eurig's spoiling. "A plan? Like a 'TOUGH GUY' plan? A - a plan to get all big and muscley, like you are?"
