Rowan knew that Halia was already worried about the fact that she was…less than inclined to run when confronted with a threat, so she couldn’t imagine that she’d be thrilled to find out about her run-in with that magical cat. Especially since her magic was apparently unstable. Right. Her magic.

That was something. She still wasn’t entirely sure how she felt about that, to be honest. On the one hand, she would be lying if she said she wasn’t happy to have something she could do when (it seemed like it was always “when,” not “if”) she encountered one of the strange occurrences in this city. On the other, apparently the awakening of her “starseed” attracted the wrong kind of attention. She absently brushed her hand over the bandage on her bicep, wincing at the sharp pain that flickered through. A souvenir from her unfortunate acquaintance. At least the youma was far worse for wear than she was. She knew the emergency room staff didn’t believe her claim that she didn’t see what caused the injury, but they couldn’t determine the cause either.

Rowan had deep cleaned her apartment not long after the battle. She wasn’t sure if she’d tracked any residual monster leavings inside, but she wasn’t taking any chances. The dozens of plants that adorned every surface in the room exuded a pleasant aroma that hung comfortingly in the air and the soft colors of her furnishings and wall décor lent the space a quiet sense of calm that contrasted sharply with the whirlpool of anxiety that churned within her.
She ran her fingers through her hair nervously as she waited for Halia to arrive. Hopefully she wouldn’t be too worried. Hopefully.

Halia knocked lightly on Rowan’s door, having come immediately at the request of her friend. She smelled of freshly baked pastries and coffee, having just gotten off work, and she carried a small bag of goodies from the cafe as well as two drinks. The message seemed urgent, and nothing went better with serious talks than fresh pastries, in her opinion.

The wounds from the fight she had been in were nearly healed at this point, though she knew they'd leave scars. She had continued to be evasive to Rowan about exactly what had happened, not wanting to get her too wrapped up in it all. She felt guilty enough, after all, that she couldn't do more to protect her friend, and that said friend seemed to be a magnet for danger.

Rowan opened her door, more than a little nervous about the news she had to deliver. “Ooh, that smells good!” She smiled at Halia, unsure how to broach the subject. It seemed like she was moving less painfully, so the mysterious injuries were likely healing well, which was a relief. Maybe now she’d be able to help with whatever caused them. Or the next whatever that might cause more. “I think…I think maybe you should sit down. I’ve got some news.” Some weird, intimidating news. She’d never been good at conversations like this, and never had news quite this strange to deliver.

Those words were never good. Ever. Halia handed over the bag of treats and the coffee before coming in and taking a seat. “.......are you pregnant?” She had gotten far more bold lately, and things like this had started slipping out far more often. The soft, anxious, painfully quiet Halia was finally starting to develop an actual personality besides ‘wallflower.’

“Sorry…that was rude. What do you need to talk about?” She was concerned for her friend and sat attentively as she waited.

Rowan’s eyes widened slightly, “No! It’s nothing like that!” She could feel her cheeks flushing slightly at the idea. “I’m definitely definitely not pregnant.” (Barring an unfortunately timed case of immaculate conception at least.)

“But, I do have this now.” She set the food down on the coffee table and reached into her purse. After a few moments of fumbling around, she withdrew a pen, holding it up for Halia to see. A “henshin pen” the magic cat called it. “So. I can do things now. With bird women. Harpies.” She was fully aware of how insane that sounded, but given the context she knew that Halia would understand it. “And storms. They bring storms when I ask them to.”

Color drained from Halia’s face when Rowan held up the pen. “Oh…” A cold wave of fear and worry washed over her and she chewed her lip. “That…..s**t….” An unusual slip of a curse word coming from her lips.

She took a deep breath and rubbed her face. “How much did the mauvian explain? The…the cat who gave that to you, I mean?” She rubbed absently at the healing wound on her arm, deeply worried. “I can….I can help fill in as much as I can. Though I should introduce you to Kerberos and Murikabushi at some point. They're….way above me in all this. They're both Eternal Senshi and have been doing this for a lot longer.”

Rowan grimaced slightly as she saw her friend pale at the revelation. With all of her existing concerns over her safety, she definitely understood why Halia would react this way. “Well, Sacha told me how to power up, even if my situation is a bit more...complicated. Apparently my “starseed,” she raised her hands in air quotes at the word, “is unstable because I’m a bit older than the average…beginner…in this whole thing. So I guess it needs time to adjust? That’s what I gathered, anyway.”

Saying it out loud didn’t make anything about it feel less bizarre, and she suspected that Halia would find the details even more concerning than she would have a standard awakening. “I do like the harpies though, they’re cute. In a strange, half bird way.” She smiled slightly, hoping to lighten the mood at least a little bit.

“Ah. Late blooming senshi. I don't know too much about it but yeah, that's a thing.” Halia rubbed her face, taking a deep breath. “I'm not upset. I'm just…. Concerned.” She slowly removed her cardigan, her arm stiff and a little sore as the last of the wound from the battle was still healing. “I had no business telling you about it before. But I suppose I should….tell you everything about this now, shouldn't I?”

“It’s a bit intimidating, to be perfectly honest. Sacha told me that as I get stronger I’ll be able to do a ritual of some kind to, well, stabilize. I’m not exactly the ritual type so I really hope that someone can walk me through it.”
She still hadn’t met a lot of others in this…situation. Rowan looked at Halia’s arm as she removed her sweater. She knew that her face would do nothing to conceal her concern, but she suspected that she'd been making her worry clear for a while, even as she tried to respect Halia's need to hold back on explanations.

“Obviously I’ve been worried about…whatever caused that, but you don’t have to tell me anything you don’t want to.” She meant that. Regardless of how curious she was.

Halia nodded as she listened. She didn't know an awful lot about it other than it was a thing that happened. If she needed more information, perhaps she would ask Kerberos. She would need to talk to him for advice about this anyways. Or perhaps Murikabushi. Either of the older, Eternal Senshi would likely be able to help.

A sigh escaped her and she shook her head, carefully slipping her arm out of her shirt to show her friend the full extent of her wounds from her shoulder to her hip. “No it's…it's better i tell you so you know what you're getting into. I told you to be cautious of the Negaverse before. This is why. I…..the entire situation was horrible, and I'm still coming to terms with everything that happened, to be honest. But….there was a kidnapping. By our side. And they…the negaverse agents were rightfully pissed. I won't fault them one bit for that, because I would have been too. An sos went out, but they didn't give any explanation, no information that could have prevented lots of issues and injuries. The sos made it sound like we had been attacked unprovoked. I walked into a shitshow.” It was almost unheard of for Halia to swear, though it had been slipping out more and more lately. “Drombeg, a knight, and myself were circling the building to try and get a read on what was going on. Neither of us had anything to do with the kidnapping. But….it wasn't like they knew that, so again, I don't necessarily blame them. The person they kidnapped was connected to someone incredibly powerful and dangerous in the negaverse. And that meant they were out for blood. I….I learned after, that Murikabushi, who is a very good friend of mine, had his starseed ripped out. Your starseed is a physical manifestation of your soul, Rowan. They can quite literally reach a hand into your chest and rip your soul out….I thought it was scary when Kerberos told me about it but…..to know it happened not even thirty feet away, and to someone I care about…” She fell silent, tears prickling in her eyes that she quickly wiped away.

“This is dangerous. This is extremely, incredibly dangerous. It's more than just scary monsters. It's people who won't stop until they're stepping over your corpse. And it's people who don't care about putting their own allies in danger to save their own skin….” It was clear she was shaken, that she was utterly terrified and had been questioning everything now. “This is a war. And I think we might be on the losing side.”

Rowan winced sympathetically upon seeing the full extent of Halia’s injuries and wondered briefly how anyone would explain that to a doctor without drawing police attention. She tried to force her mind to process each piece of information individually, but met with spectacular failure as it spun in place, running a significant portion of the entire gamut of human emotion as she listened. Concern, outrage, disgust, fear, determination, every intermediate step between. She couldn’t hold them at arm’s length, more like hand’s length, or forearm’s length if she was particularly lucky. She wanted nothing to do with anyone who would knowingly and willingly inflict this level of violence on another person, but she refused to be someone who would participate in something like a kidnapping. It would be one thing if they captured someone in combat rather than killing them, it was something else entirely to just grab a person off the street, or wherever they’d gotten their captive. And failing to give enough information to keep their own people safe? How could they justify that?

“Why would they kidnap someone? What were they trying to accomplish with that?” A slight quaver threaded through her voice as she spoke. At least she hoped it was slight, but suspected that it was more significant than she would have liked. “And how the hell would anyone pull out someone’s soul?” It was rare for her to swear, even mildly, but if that didn’t warrant it, she couldn’t imagine what would.

She couldn’t deny that this situation was terrifying, and that the prospect of soul snatching human monsters made her blood run cold down to the bones, but how long could a person sustain a “by any means necessary” approach without becoming a monster themself? The idea of reaching a point where fear and hatred drove her to inflict cruelty on another person and consider it the right thing to do, that scared her more than any monster could.

“Why do you think we’re on the losing side? Is it really that bad?” It was difficult to consider the implications of that statement.

Halia sighed and readjusted her shirt to hide most of the injuries, old scars from before she was a senshi that littered her skin did not need to be part of the discussion. “From what I understand, someone found out the civilian identity of an agent. And this agent was….. connected to some very very powerful people. Specifically Fafnir and General-King Faustite. Two people who are wildly powerful that you do not want to mess with. As for ripping out a soul….I don't know the answer. But….it happened. It was the first thing Kerberos warned me about. I guess they have the ability to do that, granted to them by Queen Metalia. I don't know, I've never exactly spoken to one of them before.”

She sighed and rubbed her face, trying to calm down. “There's a lot about it all that I still don't understand, and a lot about it that doesn't sit well with me. But as for us being on the losing side? That whole entire ******** made it pretty clear. They were organized to a fault. It was….. incredible and terrifying all at once….”

Rowan frowned, letting out something between a snort and a huff. Anyone who pranced around under the title “general-king” had to be a particular kind of insufferable, even if they had the power to support that claim. Nothing more dangerous than someone with that kind of an ego with the weaponry to protect it. And Fafnir? She sincerely hoped it was a nickname and that there were no actual dragons involved.

“That’s…a lot of titles. So, Queen Metalia and General-King Faustite are married? Sounds like she’s the more…dominant partner if she’s giving out powers like that.” It seemed like the fact that people were ripping out souls warranted investigation into their methods. “Is there anyone on our side who knows how they pull out starseeds? If they know then maybe they could figure out how to block it. If Kerberos told you, wouldn’t he know something?” That would be good. There had to be something in place to deal with this. “And who exactly is in charge on our side? Why can they manage some bizarre hierarchy when we can’t?”

Lena Roze
PostPosted: Thu Jan 30, 2025 11:15 pm

“What? No!” The idea of Faustite and Metalia being married was horrifying and more than enough to shock her out of her emotional state. “No no there's….there's a rank and file order to the negaverse. You have lieutenant, captain, general, and General-King, I think. I'd have to ask Kerberos and Muri about it more. Metalia though….she's like… She's the head of it all I think, from how I understand it.”

Halia rubbed her face as she tried to organize the chaotic thoughts in her head. “I don't think we have much of a hierarchy on our side. What Kerberos told me is our side is all about freedom, which has it's pros but also major cons, and means we don't have much of anything like that in place. It's not great….” She sighed and shook her head. “As for blocking getting your soul ripped out, I genuinely have no idea. I could ask both of the guys next time I see them. Murikabushi…recently experienced it himself.”

A shadow seemed to darken her eyes as she thought about how close she had been but hadn't known a thing. “They can also force a corruption of your soul too. Not all agents were brought over willingly, to my understanding. Some of them were genuinely good people who were forced into this. It's so much more than black and white….so much worse than I thought when I first became Aruna…”

That was a problem. All of it was a problem. From what little she’d seen Rowan had gotten the sense that there were more grey areas than met the eye. Still, she suspected that there weren’t a lot of their adversaries who would be willing to sit down to discuss those grey areas over a cup of tea. Especially if they were willing to forcibly corrupt an innocent. She didn’t realize that she was capable of the level of visceral repulsion she felt at the thought. Knowing that they had the potential for something like that made the knowledge that their side was apparently so disorganized even more vexing. Somehow.

“Do they at least try to coordinate?” She hoped that answer would be less frustrating, even if how Halia described the SOS sounded less than ideal. “Would we be able to…remedy the poor communication? Even without infringing on their freedom.” Or trying to herd these proverbial cats, as the situation seemed to be.
