Sitting in the middle of the little grove that had come to mean so, so much to her, Bestla stared at the little giftbox that she’d stored Almadel’s card away in after she’d gotten home from his Museum. True to her internal word, she’d gotten home, grabbed the box and immediately tried to go back to her world.

Only to find that she couldn’t.

She wasn’t particularly… proud of the language she’d utilized to express her annoyance at that. But she wasn’t exactly sorry about it either. Sometimes, big feelings required some especially spicy language in order to help process. And to avoid taking out a city block in pure adrenaline fueled rage. And, as she wanted to face Almadel on her own turf, she’d waited.

And, because she hadn’t wanted to accidentally activate the damned thing too soon, Bestla had kept the card in its box. But now that she was back on her homeworld and surrounded by softly glowing plant life and swooping, cheeping peeplings, she felt stabilized. Calmer. Calm was good. Calm meant that she wouldn’t try to punch the Merchant in the teeth for daring to steal from her world. Though, she had to be fair. She wasn’t one hundred percent sure that what she’d seen in his Museum was the skull she wanted. And, trying to be even more fair, though oh boy did it rankle, was it really stealing when everything was dead and gone? If she’d been corrupted or never awakened, her world would still be dead and dust. So, she shouldn’t be angry with the Merchant.

Was she still going to be, though? Yes. Yes, she was.

Enough of this, she scolded herself silently. She’d been hiding behind her anger in order to avoid the unknown. She wasn’t sure what would happen once she activated the card. But she’d dithered long enough. Grabbing the box, she opened it and slid the card into her palm. Picking it up, she admired it for a moment. It was quite pretty after all. Then, she moved more deliberately.

Flipping the card between her fingers, she pressed her thumb to the little holographic circle on the back of the card and waited.

The lettering on the card shimmered and, one by one, they began to shrivel and peel off the card until, finally, they lifted off and sizzled into a thin, iridescent smoke.

The ink took a few seconds to erase itself from the card, but as the card was stripped of detail, Almadel was born of it.

A holographic circle appeared before her, and then–as if constructed of thousands of tiny, iridescent specks, Almadel’s form began to manifest. His feet were first, and then knees, and hips. The process took half a minute, and the whole time it seemed like he was his own light show.

He wore a similar outfit as usual, however he appeared before her now with no draping coat or loose accessories. A satchel hung from one shoulder and he wore form-fitting pants and shirt. His sleeves were rolled up and, judging by the knee-high boots he was wearing that were wet from the calves down, he was probably getting into something. He was wearing tinted sunglasses, and despite not being adorned in gems and accessories like usual, he still had an air of class and poise. He just also seemed like he’d been out adventuring.

When he stood before her in completion, he smoothed both hands over the front of his outfit as if to brush off the last of the glitter he’d first appeared as. The sparkles dissolved off of him as soon as he shook them out.

“You know, when I gave those out, I was expecting a few extra trips to Earth. Perhaps this is better, it’s like a little vacation to somewhere new–”

He paused, seemed to rethink his words, and then turned back to the Senshi when he realized where they were. “Is this Bestla?” he guessed.

She couldn’t help herself. Bestla startled minutely as the lettering on her card began to sizzle and peel away. Whatever she’d been expecting, it certainly wasn’t… whatever the hell was happening at the moment. Still, she had to give the Merchant props for his entrance as he manifested from shimmering, holographic glitter. Perhaps there was something to the saying ‘there is power in style’.

Still, she carefully held her expression into the most neutral she could manage under the circumstances.

“Good trick,” she drawled laconically and Almadel began to brush himself off. She took in his overall appearance and wondered just how much he was influenced by Earth media. He looked like every Indiana Jones and National Treasure type hero imaginable with a dash added in of Nathan Drake. It was impressive and also incredibly funny. She would probably lose her s**t though if he suddenly produced a whip and fedora.

“Yes, well. Sorry not sorry that this isn’t a little jaunt to Earth for you,” Bestla said calmly. However frivolous she found his chatter, she had to remind herself that Almadel was powerful in ways she didn’t know. It would, most likely, be a Very Bad Move to try and punch his head from his neck. But surely, she could allow herself a tiny vent. Maybe he could sense her mood because he backtracked on the vacation quip very fast. When he turned back to her, she flipped her hair over her shoulder and gave a single nod.

“It is and I am,” she said. “And I am cashing in that little favor you promised.”

She wasn’t exactly sure how to phrase her request. Yo, I think you have a skull that belongs to me or maybe Haaaaaay gurl. Grave rob any neat skeletons lately? Yeah, no. Either of those approaches would likely end up with her on fire out in the depths of the cosmos. After a moment, she settled for the far more civil, “Walk with me. There’s something I need to show you that pertains to my request.”

Fortunately, the Lord’s remains weren’t far so it wasn’t as if she would be asking Almadel to slog around.

She was painfully easy to read, but just because she seemed in a testy mood didn’t mean any of Almadel’s feathers were getting ruffled. He was still a guest on a foreign world and he wasn’t going to have a bad time.

“With pleasure,” he said, as if oblivious to the attitude she was giving him. He adjusted himself and walked proudly as he followed her lead, but his tail danced behind him in something of a coy, interested manner.

Maybe it was just to fill the silence, but it didn’t take him long to comment, “Your world looks much healthier than where I’ve been recently. Senshi have a special sort of magic when it comes to worlds, I’m a bit envious. What have you been doing around here?”

Feeling very awkward duck-ish, Bestla led the way, unsure how to break the silence. It was very hard to be stoic and stern when her companion’s whole being radiated a sort of urbane gentility. It made her feel like a boor.

So when Almadel actually spoke and started asking questions, Bestla almost felt as if she could kiss him. Almost. She was still fairly annoyed with him. Even so, she was a little surprised by his words and didn’t bother to hide it. And in doing so, some of the annoyance she wore like a shroud dropped away.

“I wish I had an answer for you,” she said candidly. “All I know is one day, dead world. Next trip up? Suddenly things are growing and skittering and it’s like that for a while. Then I came up here maybe one and a half, two months ago and well… You can see them zipping through the trees,” she said as she paused and pointed towards the trees to where a family of peeplings darted. “I’ve been slowly seeing some diversity with those little guys and it’s great! But also kind of confusing because as far as I know I haven’t done anything.”

She badly wanted to ask him if he knew, but feared that would use up her favor. And she couldn’t let him leave without getting the Lord’s skull back. She just couldn’t. So she bit back her questions and resumed walking, noting that here and there some new plants were showing themselves.

“I swear, everything on this rock glows but me,” she muttered softly before laughing and gesturing with her hand.

“Just up here. I’d apologize for the state of things, but uncovering this fellow is a big job and it’s only been a few weeks since I found him and I’ve had other things on my mind outside of unearthing him.”

Now that they were at the skeleton, she could make her request. She just needed to keep it civil.

“So, when you had the lot of us at your museum,” she began slowly, clearly feeling her words out. “During the mess with the cosmopod queen, I caught a very quick glance of something that looked like a skull that kind of hit my brain just right. But I kind of forgot about it and let it go. Until I found this,” she waved at the massive skeleton before crouching near where it’s head would have been connected to the spine and gently brushing dirt from it. “His skull is missing and I thought of what I’d seen in your museum. I believe,” she said slowly, softly, “you have something that belongs here and I would like him back, please. It’s not right that his remains are not wholly at rest here.”

Unspoken questions radiated like a shroud around Bestla, and Almadel most certainly noticed. She was holding back. He was good at reading people–most of the time. Born of Earth, most of us current conversation partners had not had time to develop deception skills enough to fool him.

He kept his thoughts to himself, perhaps to see what topics she would share on his own, or perhaps just to make sure he could absorb as much of her world as possible.

The steps were almost familiar to him. He walked easily, like he knew the place. His tail danced enthusiastically behind him.

“Oh, yes,” he hummed, eyeing the skeletal remains. “You know, I’d meant to come back,” he said, stroking his chin as he observed the nearly complete collection of bones. “The skull was quite enough difficulty on its own. Is this why you’ve been so dour? You musn’t be mad at me,” he said, and patted her arm reassuringly.

“I meant no harm. This world was dead when I was last here. So take my high praise for all you’ve done to bring it back to life. You’ll be raising him from the dead soon enough too, won’t you!” he laughed, friendly, but undoubtedly calculating. The words weren’t empty but they did buy him time.

“Say what you will about ‘not doing anything’, Senshi worlds are strange like that. They’re more in tune with you than you know. But,” he clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth and shifted his weight to one foot.

“What do you know about ‘him’, is he important?” he asked, tilting his head curiously and drawing his eyes back to her.

The range of emotion that rippled across Bestla's face probably would have struck her as funny if it had been anyone else but her. As it stood, she hadn't been expecting such a rapid confirmation of theft followed by an appeal to not be mad. And, as Almadel's reasons pretty much lined up with her own, she sighed.

"Intellectually," she began slowly, trying to keep a wail from her voice, "I know you're right. But you try getting walloped upside the head with memories you have no context for and see how calm you stay."

Still, he'd admitted to having been here and taking the skull. That was progress and she'd happily take it. Feeling a little easier about things, she allowed herself a mildly rueful smile and shrugged.

"He was singular and I don't think he'll be coming back however much I might wish it. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but something tells me he's gone except for whatever memories I recover."

She wanted to ask him more about what he meant about senshi worlds, but before the question could form, she found herself thrown back mentally by Almadel's line of questioning. Was he important? What did that matter to anyone but her? She'd asked for her favor, so what was the hold up?

"I'm not sure what that has to do with me asking for his skull back," she said. "But okay. I'll play. I've seen this world scream in pain and mourn his passing before they all died. He was the Lord of the Wild and he was loved and respected by those who lived here. Whether that makes him important is up for debate. But he mattered to the ones who used to live here and he matters to me."

Almadel gave her a side eye but was quick to smile and hold up his hands as if he meant no harm. “It’s not an interrogation! It’s a question, only. I’ve grown fond of the old fellow. We’ve been together for quite some time. He hasn’t been the best conversation partner, I’ll say that, but I’ll miss him very much. I knew there was something special about him, it’s just difficult to get the full story when there’s no one around to tell it. The Lord of the Wild, hm. No, I understand why you’d want him back. It’s quite different when there’s someone here to look after things and when the universe has left them untended. I’ll bring him home to you, of course,” he said, but there was hesitation in his voice as he thought something over.

He planted his hands firmly on his hips and his tail dipped back and forth behind him.

“But, perhaps, if you would be so kind, you could do something for me, too?”

He turned to face her abruptly. “It isn’t that I don’t want to help, it’s just that it is, quite literally, a very big thing to ask of me. I like you, Bestla. And you’ve already done me a great favor by helping at my museum. It’s just, what you’re asking is actually a very difficult thing. To get him here–safely–will take quite a bit of effort, and even more energy. I can do it, of course, but I want it to be done right. And I’m sure you do, too. I couldn’t help but notice, you’ve got a bountiful selection of mushrooms growing around here.”

Almadel gestured vaguely but without looking, he held an open palm in the direction of a cluster of notably distinct mushrooms. They weren’t quite plentiful but it couldn’t be said that there was a shortage of them.

“Let me collect a few first and I’ll bring your Lord of the Wild back home, safe and sound. I won’t make you lift a finger, except to shake on it.”

His arm dropped to his side and then he offered her his hand. “Deal?”

The side-eye and quickly raised hands were enough to force Bestla to fall back mentally. Okay. Fine. She was being, perhaps, a bit over aggressive here. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath in through her nose and held it for a few seconds. The Merchant was right, he’d only been asking a question. How long had it been since he’d been here last and taken the skull away? He was basically Space Indianca Jones with wanting to put everything into his museum. He just did more haggling and less Nazi-punching.

She assumed, anyway.

Her train of thought was knocked from its rails as he agreed to bring the skull back. Eyes flying open, she couldn’t keep the wide grin from her face, though it dimmed slightly at Of course. Suddenly his entire posture changed from playful to business-like and she could only blink at the suddenness of it. Still, he wasn’t refusing her. Keeping close check on her mental reins, she made herself listen calmly. Without judgement. Nothing he was saying was necessarily wrong. And he was correct in assuming that she’d want the job done right. Besides, her trip to his museum was more than enough proof that while he was powerful, he had limits. She could respect that. Still.

“Mushrooms?” she repeated, eyes flickering to the indicated patch. He just wanted a few mushrooms in exchange for the extra effort? “I mean, yes, obviously, but mushrooms?”

She moved to the patch and knelt by it. They were pretty and they glowed softly just like nearly everything else here. She was certain that she’d seen others like this so she wouldn’t really be losing anything. After a moment, she nodded firmly, stood up and went back over. Taking Almadel’s proffered hand, she shook firmly.

“Deal,” she said, finally allowing herself to relax. “I’ll even go a step further and grant you permission to gather mushrooms whenever you’re in the vicinity so long as you don’t denude the place and stop to say hi first.”

She knew she’d been acting rather badly. This gesture at least would go a little way to making things right in that regard.

Almadel brightened immediately. He’d have been happy with the trade he proposed but he wasn’t going to complain at all with her amended offer. If he’d had any hurt feelings about her attitude, they’d have been immediately lost.

Of course, he wouldn’t tell Bestla that she’d never left his good graces; he wasn’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth. He hadn’t even had to pull out the sad eyes.

“Oh, you spoil me. Have no fear, Bestla. I’m a conservationist. A preserver of species. I’d never do something so barbaric. When it comes to the ecology of worlds, I never take what can’t be replaced.”

Artifacts, not so much. But this was a simple correction.

“Shall I show you how to harvest these mushrooms?” he asked, already rolling up his sleeves. “I don’t know if they’ll be as of use to you as I might find them, but I’m something of an expert on the matter. It would be remiss of me not to impart such information while we’re on the subject.”

The Lord of the Wild was not forgotten.

With a bounce in his step, he made his way over to the nearest cluster of mushrooms and crouched. “It is the same on Earth, isn’t it? Some mushrooms are good and some are dangerous? These are a bit of both.”

He placed his hands atop the cap of the mushroom and at first looked as though he were giving it a bit of a massage. “These are nice and healthy. Oh, good little batteries. They’re a bit bitter. Very acidic. So you shouldn’t eat them. I can, but I think it might hurt you.”

He worked his fingers down the stalk, and then into the dirt. His gentle ministrations helped him find where the mushroom grew beneath the ground, and after a few more seconds of this he was carefully uprooting it.

“Ah, perfect! Yes, you have a very healthy species. Look, the roots are all intact,” he said, admiring the tangle of bulbous mycelium that tapered into a thin weave. “This is a good specimen, too. See how this part has crystallized? I’ll break that off and grind it up. It’s energy is stored there. If you don’t prune them, it blocks and the mushroom wil die. Just a little snip, take off the hard parts, and the soft parts will grow. Do you care about this? You don’t have to,” he laughed, but he seemed too excited not to ramble about this.

She’d already shaken, it was too late for her to renege.

“If you do nothing, it’ll eventually just die and regrow from the spores. It processes nutrients into energy. You’ll find this soil is very healthy. Just in case you ever need fertilizer,” he pointed to the nearest cluster of mushrooms with the one he held in his hand. “Look no further. I’ll just grab a few, what I can fit in my bag.”

He unbuckled the satchel and carefully deposited the mushroom in but it didn’t seem like it filled at all. He began to dig out a second one shortly after.

Blinking owlishly, Bestla nodded and followed Almadel as he bounced over to the patch of mushrooms. She hadn’t expected a lesson in alien horticulture, but who was she to argue? Especially when she would be learning something useful about her world. And somehow, even as he gushed to her about being a preserver, she felt in her gut that he was telling her the precise truth. She’d caught a glimpse of that at the Museum first hand.

Crouching beside him, she watched intently and nodded at the comparison to earth mushrooms. If these were good and bad, she needed to know. But…

“Batteries?” she repeated “How…?”

She shut her mouth quickly, not wanting to miss a single word. While she was beyond thrilled to be told something on her planet was quite healthy indeed, she really didn’t understand half of what he was saying. So, she gave a purely mental shrug and gave herself over to learning how to care for battery ‘shrooms. She cared very much about what he was saying, though she was certain that she probably looked a bit bewildered.

“So, if I prune and grind up the hard bits, I can use them to help some of the other plants grow?” she asked carefully, wanting to make sure she understood. “That’s handy.”

Sure, she was more than likely understating things, but she found herself wondering about Almadel himself. He seemed to know so much. Just how old was he? She was a little afraid to ask. At any rate, he seemed more than pleased by their bargain and if her mushrooms had the side effect of also being Almadel food, so be it. If he was going to be popping in from time to time to gather mushrooms, it would only be polite to find out what other things he consumed.

But still. “You are one odd duck,” Bestla said quietly. “I’m sure I don’t know how you could know half the things you do and I’m not sure I actually want to. We’re both getting something we want, so I think I’m going to let myself be content with that.”

Really, she’d be getting her skull back and deep in her gut, she knew that was something that needed to happen. Almadel was facilitating that, therefore he was an ally of sorts. And if he was going to be visiting, well, that made him almost a friend.

“You’ll have to give me a list of things you can eat or drink before we’re done here. I wouldn’t be a very good host if I didn’t keep some snacks on hand for the times you might drop by. Should I set aside any interesting things I may find for you to look at while I’m at it?”

”The Space Cauldron”
PostPosted: Sat May 03, 2025 3:13 pm

Never one to refuse a snack, his eyes flashed eagerly and he traded her a smile. “Oh, you’re very sweet. I don’t think there’s anything you could find that I couldn’t eat. But I’ll try anything once.”

He’d collected a few mushrooms–no more than he’d said, and not enough to leave her with a sparse collection of her own, and brushed his hands together before standing.

“But yes, you should most definitely set aside any interesting things you find! You’ll make my job much easier if you keep a little collection." He was a collector but he seemed amused by any sort of interesting finds, even if they weren't for him. Although, Bestla was rather reasonable. He could probably get a few good trades out of her.

He closed up his bag and gave it an affectionate pat. "All right, Bestla. Give me," he paused briefly, nodding his head back and forth as he looked upwards for a second, "Fifteen minutes. Make a space, do whatever you need to prepare the area. I'll fetch your Lord."

For a moment, Bestla was thrilled. She was getting what she wanted and needed and Aldamel was being more than agreeable. She’d even learned some new things about her world. But then realization hit. He was going to bring the skull here and that wouldn’t work. Flapping her hands in agitation, she blurted out, “Wait! Not right here. Can you bring him to where I met you? Please?”

She was ready to offer him every mushroom on the planetoid if he looked even the slightest bit put out by her request. But, frankly, she knew that if he had had trouble taking just the skull when he’d looted her little dead world, she was in no way going to be able to haul it to the grove herself. It rankled to admit weakness, but she knew her limits; she would not risk damage to the skull because she tried to haul it through a forest.

“Please,” she repeated. If he needed fifteen minutes, she could be back there in five if she ran. There wasn’t much to clear away since she hadn’t exactly brought much up to clutter the place. The peeplings would probably be mildly annoyed by any noise and fuss, but they’d settle.

She was already moving, sprinting back to the grove.

Almadel wasn’t so fast that he missed her enthusiastic flapping. He’d given her a thumbs up just before flickering out of sight, as if sunbeams and starlight had swallowed him up.

It was the shortest ‘fifteen minutes’ he’d ever taken, because by the time she made her way back to the clearing, he was already standing back to admire his handiwork. He’d returned the skull exactly as he’d taken it, and now that it was returned it looked as though it was precisely where it was meant to be.

Despite the initial theft, Almadel had undeniably taken very good care of the skull. He didn’t look as if he’d even broken a sweat in the process. His back was to Bestla and he had his hands on his hips as he tilted his head upwards to admire his handiwork. When she was close, he half turned to greet her, tail dancing pleasantly behind him.

“Oh, there you are. Good, you’re right on time. Here, right? This is good?”

Panting slightly as she skid to a halt and looking somewhat bemusedly at the Merchant, Bestla managed an expression somewhere between a smile and a scowl.

"That was not fifteen minutes. But yes, there is good. Thank you."

Soon enough, the little scowl present on her face faded fully into the smile as she circled the skull and reached out to gently brush her hand against it. It was bigger than she'd expected, easily five-ish feet from the top of the head to where the tip of the nose would have been. And its horns were still firmly attached and even more branching that she remembered.

Pausing a moment, she leaned close and rested her forehead against the smooth bone. She couldn't fault Almadel's stewardship one bit. She might not like how he acquired things, but she couldn't say that he didn't take care of them.

"Welcome home, old fellow," she whispered before tearing herself away and turning to face the Merchant. "I'm not sure I can thank you enough for this. But thank you so, so much, Almadel."
