HI S T O R Y
Balu was born during a particularly harsh season when the swamps were more treacherous than usual due to heavy rains. His parents, Kalinu and Bana, were esteemed community members. Kalinu was a skilled builder, known for constructing shelters that could withstand the swamp's harsh conditions. Bana was a healer, knowledgeable in the use of local herbs and plants to treat injuries and illnesses. As a young boy, he spent his days exploring the marshlands with his three other siblings. His favourite companion was his younger sister, Leilani, with whom he shared many adventures.
At the age of 15, Balu underwent his first major rite of passage, a solitary journey through the marshlands. It was during this journey that Balu earned his first tattoo, a simple swirl on his forearm symbolizing his successful passage. In the years that followed, Balu took on more responsibilities within the colony. He learned the art of building from his father, developing the strength and skills needed to construct sturdy huts. He also spent time with his mother, learning about the medicinal properties of the plants and herbs that grew in the swamp. Though his affinity is much more physical than it is mental.
