Sigiriya stood there, in the middle of the ‘abandoned’ warehouse waiting for his cousin-in-law. He was there to train and spar with the older knight. It was a good idea for him because while Sig was a Squire, and had been training off and on for quite a while yet, he hadn’t really been in many one on one fights since he had become a Squire. There had been a few, but as asinine as it sounded, he didn’t think he was progressing as much as he could be. He had this staff he barely knew how to wield, magic he did not know the limits of, and a bracelet that he had found on his wonder that he suspected did something but he had no clue. Nor had he really gotten a chance to test it out. Hence the request for a mock battle.
The warehouse was empty, which is why he picked the place, but in good repair. If the sign on the security fencing outside was anything to go by, the owners were trying to sell it, so keeping up with the building made sense. It also meant that they would not be fighting in the weather, would be out of sight of the general public, and there were a few corners and exits for quick power downs if security or cops showed up. They were trespassing after all.
In order not to draw more attention to his little BnE he had kept the lights off, maneuvering around only by the light cast through the windows from the city and the moon. It wasn’t perfect but it was good enough. Besides, Sig was focusing on sensing any other powered fighters approaching, so he wasn’t surprised when an order signature rapidly arrived. “Hey. No issues getting out tonight?” He asked his new companion as they stepped into the area.

To be honest, he was a little surprised that Dessies….Baby daddy? Boyfriend? He didn't know honestly and frankly it was none of his business. As long as she was happy then he figured the man was okay. It didn't take him too long to get ready to head out, things were easier when your other half knew what was going on, he figured Rose was fine. If she had an issue with him going out powered she would’ve said something by now, and he would’ve listened, stopped if she asked. But since she has not he figured he was in the clear. As long as he watches his back, his wife would be content knowing he could handle himself. Hell he was the only Page sparring with Maia for fun. Everyone including both of his younger brothers thought he was crazy but in reality while that may be true, he loved sparring. It kept him on his toes and he didn't have to worry about falling behind or his body failing him (he was well aware he just stepped into his 40’s).
The warehouse they were supposed to meet in came closer and he stepped up to face Sigiriya, giving the other male a soft smirk, “Nah, wife is usually okay with me going out. Any trouble on your end?” He was ready to get started so he started stretching, cracking his neck and hopping from one foot to another. He hoped the squire would give him a challenge.

“Nope, we made a deal that we would trade off nights patrolling or sparing if we couldn’t or wouldn’t find a babysitter.” Sig shrugged and twirled his staff, it was really the only ‘bad a**’ looking move he had gotten down in any sort of way. His and Dessie’s deal was really a good way to balance out the need to train, patrol, and still parent. While there was an entire village, more like a city with the amount of Jacobs’ and Jacobs adjacent family members, to help with watching Sarah there were sometimes when it was just simpler to split the duties. It also didn’t hurt that she knew he was coming out to train with a family member. One who knew what he was doing so Sig was less likely to get into any trouble.
He waited a moment more and then with a nod Sig moved in for an attack, swinging his staff for a side strike. He was still getting used to fighting with the thing but he found that he very much so preferred the longer reach it gave him.

Well, Sig had the advantage with his staff, but that didn't mean Hali couldn't adapt. He raised his arm to tank the side strike, grabbing onto said weapon to try and pull him forward for a kick aimed at the side that didn't have the protection of a weapon. This may be a spar, but that didn't mean he had to play fair. The enemy wouldn't and he hoped Sig would understand. If he played his cards right, Sig's weakness would be close combat, so as long as he stayed in his face, that staff would be pretty useless.
He would make sure to go light on the strength since he wasn't trying to mess up that pretty face of his. Lord knows he didn't want the little blonde coming after him with all her fury. That was something no one should have to deal with thank you.

Sig did as he had been trained, when in a ‘game’ of tug-of-war against a larger and stronger opponent he would lose… so let go. While Hali was technically just a page he was still quite an intimidating opponent. He had let go of the staff so wasn’t completely in range of the larger man when he kicked out at him, that didn’t mean Sig wasn’t impacted though. Rather than take a direct strike to his side with a shin he instead took the strike to his side with Hali’s foot. The strike had him staggering backwards with a hiss. That hurt.
Wrapping an arm around his rather bruised ribs he de-summoned his weapon so Hali couldn’t use it against him. With his staff back in his free hand he smiled and informed Hali that there were some benefits of being an Ida knight before channeling some magic through his ring, calling upon the Aspect of Ida. With a sigh Sig stood up straight and stopped clutching at his ribs, they still hurt a bit but they definitely didn’t hurt as badly as they had just moments ago. Another second and even that ache was gone.
Taking advantage of no longer finding it hard to breathe, Sig practically bum rushed the page. He was not a very good hand to hand fighter but he was about to teach Hali another quirk of having a staff while being a knight. It was a skill that took precise timing, timing he was still working on, but a skill that definitely packed a punch. Trying to show off to his in-law the squire feigned tackling the larger man but as he ducked low he summoned his staff again, aiming to ‘stab’ it into the larger male’s lower abdomen and knock back as well as knock the wind out of him. Nothing overly violent since it is a staff but still, it was showing the larger, much better trained, fighter that Sig wasn’t quite the weakling of the family any more.
((ASPECT OF IDA: While channeling Aspect of Ida, the knight is quicker to recover, stopping bleeding, healing very minor injuries, or refreshing their energy if unharmed.))

Ahh…It appears Dessies baby daddy wasn't so soft after all.
Hali staggered back, laughing as the weapon disappeared from his grasp. “Well done lover boy.” he righted his footing, getting back into his fighting stance to prepare for more. He watched as Sig channeled the aspect of his princess, finding that pretty useful. Now if he were the enemy, he would have used that time to leap in to get him while he was preoccupied. However, he wasn't going to be that much of a douchebag, so he would allow for the squire to recover. “Neat trick~” He couldn't wait till he would be able to use the magic of his prince but for right now, he would have to settle for his fists, something that was still super reliable.
He would have to find his ring one day….Maybe soon.
Hali steeled himself for what he thought was going to be a tackle when Sig chose to get him in the middle with this staff insead, knocking the wind out of him. Well s**t…He had to admit that was pretty good thinking. He stumbled back quite a bit, coughing for all of a minute before he righted himself again. So the kid knew about his weakness to close quarter combat huh? Well he would have to just get creative right? Hali took a moment to recover a bit before charging at the squire, dropping into a slide where he attempted to grapple his legs with his own to knock him down on his side.

“Thanks, Maia is an effective teacher.” As was fear. Sig had rapidly recognized just how unprepared he was in this war. Just how vulnerable he was. So he had been practicing. He had been trying to think of ways to offset his skills and his weaknesses. He did not want anyone, let alone his family, to sit by his hospital bed wondering if he was going to die. Not again. Never again.
Sig took his little win of driving Hali back, bracing for the inevitable retaliation. He only had a split second to think when the larger page started to charge right at him. Thinking fast, and realizing he needed a real moment to think, he did the only thing that really came to mind and slammed the end of his staff against the concrete floor, sending magic through it. He wasn’t sure if it would hold but the green ivy bubble that formed around him was better than nothing. The squire’s eyes widened when Hali went into a slide, and for a split second Sig wondered if he was about to become one very large human soccer ball.
((Squire: A Jo staff, also known as a Hanbō. It is a total of nearly four feet long and just shy of an inch thick. It has an ivy design carved into the two ends as well as tapering up the staff until it fades away before reaching the middle. The design has a green tint towards the end but, like the pattern, this fades away as well and is not prevalent throughout the design.
When Sigiriya thumps his staff on the ground and channels his magic through it, a roughly 12 foot wide, 6 foot radius, translucent green ivy spherical barrier is formed around him for a total of 45 seconds maximum. It is large enough that if he were to swing the staff around from its end the edge of the staff would not break the barrier and grants sanctuary to everyone who finds themselves inside it. The barrier becomes progressively thinner the higher it reaches at the top, and bottom, of the bubble, the two points it is easiest to break. The barrier is mostly impervious to magic and weapons of equal or lesser powers but it can fail at the two ‘poles’ where the ‘vines’ of magic are not as tightly woven. Sigiriya also can not move his feet NOR the staff. It must remain in contact with the ground inorder for the barrier to remain intact. If either of these are disrupted the magic will be broken. Multiple magical attacks from equal or greater powers will disrupt the magic.))

He wasn't able to stop the slide quick enough and the big page collided with the sphere, laying flat on the ground with a not so amused frown on his face. “The ********?! I can't even pull that s**t.” He felt a bit slighted, and it showed on his face. “Couldn't take a fall to the ground so you had to put up the barrier, pretty boy?” While Maia was an effective teacher, Hali did not fear her. In fact he relished sparring with her every chance he got because he meant that he would learn a lot more from an eternal senshi over someone of lower rank. Getting up, he righted himself and aimed a nice frontal spartan kick at the barrier to test it. When it didn't give, a low growl left his throat and he started pelting the bubble with his fists insead.
There was something of a manic animalistic look in his eye while he kept hitting, almost like a predator being denied its prey. He was sure the barrier had to come down at some point and when it did, Sig would have to pray he would remember his rule of not hurting him.

Well… Sig learned a few things. One, his ‘bubble’ wouldn’t bounce around like a giant ball, two, the magic was at least strong enough to last against an apparently pissed page, and three, having a very large man play ‘Hulk Smash!’ on a magical shield made of vines was very disconcerting. Especially since the squire could feel his magic waning. “Uh…. I don’t suppose you would want to call a truce?” He drew on the last little trick up his metaphorical, though in this case it was rather literal, sleeve. That little metallic bangle he had picked up a while back. It was like a small battery. A small wearable, magical battery. It doubled the length of his shield from what he could tell.
Sig could only hope that Hali was willing to not grind his a** into paste once even that extra magical boost faded. “I’ll let you punch me once if that will make you feel better?”

Truce?
Well, he WAS getting a little carried away wasn't he?
Hali shook his head and smirked, slowing down his punches. “Scared?” When he offered to let him punch once, Hali was, for lack of a better term, insulted. He gave the squire a what the ******** look and shook his head. “What? No….I don't need you feeling bad for me kid, that kinda thing pisses me off. Thought you weren't trying to do that?” the only advantage Sig had over him was the fact that he was a rank higher. If they were both squires, then this would've been a much more difficult spar. “Nah, I think I'm done. Really should learn to read your opponents before you open your mouth Sig.” Dessie would not be around to save him all the time, so maybe the squire should learn some tact? Probably.

“Well, I mean. You are kinda’ going all Hulk on me so…” Sig shrugged even as he felt a drop of cold sweat slide down his spine. Hali wasn’t actually stopping his punches, just slowing down, which made it so much worse since Sig could feel his magic rapidly fading. Even with the boost he wasn’t sure how much longer he could hold the shield.
When the larger man asked if Sig was trying to piss him off the squire shook his head emphatically, “Nah mate! My cousins would always just demand a punch to ‘even things out’ when they felt they got the short end of the stick.” He shrugged and winced when the shield faded away as the magic ran out. “It was just instinct although I guess as far as tactics go, enraging your opponent isn’t exactly a horrid idea. As long as you can withstand the fallout that is.” He stumbled back and ended up taking a knee as a wave of tiredness washed over him. That was a new one for him, Sig can only assume it was from lack of magic. Even trying to draw upon his Aspect did little other than easing some of the fatigue. “So, uh, should we continue?” He didn’t particularly want to but he realized that they were there to fight so calling an end to it early just because he was tired wasn’t exactly realistic.

Hali assessed the squire and shook his head.
“Nah, we can call it a night if you want. I think there was some lessons learned right?” He would be correct in the assumption that enraging your opponent isnt a bad idea, but the caveat to that is KNOWING your opponent. If you don't have a good read on said opponent then enraging them could mean injury or death depending. He offered his hand to help him so they could get going. Sparring is nice and all, but now he wanted to take a nice bath and maybe have some fun with his wife after…More than likely yes. But anyway, he was done and he wanted to go home now.

Sig gladly took the other male’s hand for the assist up, “Yeah. Always have an exit plan.” He would have sworn his knees creaked as he stood upright. Dear lord, he felt old. “I honestly didn’t think the shield would hold up, let alone knew what to do when it fell.” He sighed and shook his head. “It pretty much leaves me a sitting duck. Can’t say as I appreciate how that feels at all.” The squire tried to stretch his back, wincing at the tight muscles in his back. A long, hot shower was definitely called for.
“Again, thank you for agreeing to spar. I appreciate it. Can’t say as I relish doing it again anytime soon but if you want a rematch just ask.” He stuck a hand out for a shake. “I should be getting home. With luck Sarah should be asleep so Dessie and I can spend some quiet time before bed.” It was something he had been doing his best to do every night. A little calming thing for just the two of them.

“So it might be a situational use then.” He shook Sig’s hand back, nodding in agreement. “I'll be hitting you up, trust me, you need more practice.” going home was nice, and he was already making his way out. “I'll see you around Sig. Probably will stop by to see Dessie and Sarah sometime soon. Boys are asking about both of them.” That and Annie was requesting to meet them as well. He took off quickly, with the mission of bathing in his jacuzzi tub heavy on his mind.

“Will do,” Sig smiled and nodded as well. Maybe next time he could get Hali to work on close quarters combat with him rather than just sparing. “Definitely. You all are always welcome, and if not I know we will see you at Sarah’s birthday party.” It was hard to believe his little girl was turning two. “Get home safe.” With that brief salutation the squire turned and headed out a different way, hurrying home to his own family…. And the hot shower that was calling his name.
