Sounds of the Season (9) : Seasonal songs play constantly this time of the year, and between old classics and new hits, there’s always something for everyone on the quest for Holiday cheer. One song, more than all the rest, is hitting hard. It’s catchy and festive and even though you’ve heard it a hundred times, it’s still exciting whenever it comes on again. Something about this song fills you with such joy and merriment that it’s almost impossible to resist the urge to spontaneously dance or sing along with it. There’s something magical about it; it’s an instant mood lifter and can make even the chilliest winter days feel a little warmer.

Kemi hadn’t shown herself off yet. She had been busy, and she knew that others were always busy at this time of the year, but she wanted to share that she was stronger again now, and so she had sent a message to Alcor to meet with her, now that the hardest parts of the holidays were over.

Winter was back with a vengeance, and Kemi both…appreciated and despised this fact, but there was nothing to be done except deal with the cold once again. And she was adept in doing so.

As she waited for her friend to show up, she hummed the song under her breath once again. It had been suck in her head since she had first heard it on the radio, and even though it was after the normal celebration part, she couldn’t stop thinking about it or singing it. It made her feel warm. Happy. Like she had when she had been given the gift of becoming a Super Senshi again…and it was a feeling she didn’t want to lose. So, it was quite fitting that she felt this while waiting for…well. The person who was arguably her best friend on Earth. Besides Arthur, of course, but…another Senshi...was simply a different story.

“Someone’s in a good mood,” Alcor commented as she approached Kemi, her lips curving into a faint smile.

At first, the change in Kemi’s aura didn’t register, though it should have been an obvious sign that she was no longer a basic Senshi. It wasn’t until her eyes fell on the differences in Kemi’s uniform that it finally clicked. “Well, looks like congratulations are in order.”

She circled the other woman taking note of the large bow, the full plaid skirt, and heavy-looking sleeves. “I like your new uniform.” She said lightly. “But more importantly, does it help with the cold?” Her words hung in the still air as snow fell in quiet cascades.

Kemi couldn’t stop the grin on her face and she lunged at Alcor, wrapping her arms around the other woman. “I’ve missed you. How could I not be in a good mood? And yes, I’m quite fond of it…I’ve missed it. I hope…I hope I can continue to get stronger here, that would…be nice.”

Drawing away, she looked thoughtful and slowly nodded, a little. “It…I’m still not a fan of the winter, or cold in general, unless we’re talking about you. But…the sleeves are a relief, I won’t deny it. I’ve missed them.”

She had forgotten, mostly what her fukus had looked like. It had been so long that she was stuck in her basic form, but she missed being stronger…being the proper Senshi she was supposed to be. “It was a surprise to me, I hadn’t realized…it would even be possible to get any power back…how have you been?”

Alcor returned the careful hug and took a step back when Kemi did. She chuckled at her comment of still not being a fan of the cold and shook her head. It was a sentiment that many people shared, most notably her twin, Eleonora, who was also the Senshi of Heat. “I’m certain you’ll continue to get stronger.”

Some people gained that strength quicker than others, whereas she was a prime example of the latter. But eventually most made it to Eternal, or so she assumed. Aside from Liryn, Athene, or maybe Beira, Alcor didn’t have many people she considered friends that she could ask who were powered.

“I’ve… been ok,” she replied, hesitation evident in her voice. “I’ve mostly been working or practicing for an upcoming ice skating competition.” Alcor deflected since she didn’t want to get into a conversation about how her sister and Fionan had met up or how she felt uncertain about the whole thing.

“A competition!” Kemi’s eyes went wide. “Do you want me to come with you? I would like to. I would very much like to be there and support you!” It would be cold at the rink, but she had coats…and there would be warm drinks, and she enjoyed ice skating…visually it was stunning.

“I’m glad that you’ve been okay…I feel like we haven’t seen one another nearly enough lately, I hope to change that, if you want?”

“The competition isn’t until the end of January. But I’ll still be practicing after work at the rink once we’re officially closed.” One of the benefits of working there was that she didn’t need to schedule time, Once the exterior lights were off and doors were locked she was free to use the Zamboni to smooth the ice and practice for however long she wanted.

It was a quiet luxury, skating beneath the dimmed overhead lights with her song playing quietly in the background. The solitude gave her the space to focus, perfecting her routines without distraction. Each glide, spin, and jump felt more personal as if she and the rink were sharing a secret no one else could understand.

She did, however, miss the days when she and Indra would skate together in partner events but she knew that his priorities were with his boyfriend which she understood. Fortunately, or unfortunately, she had no such obligation.

The quiet hours also gave her time to reflect on her progress. In those moments, she could feel her skates carving the ice. There was something magical about the rink after hours, its emptiness filled with the promise of what could be. “But if you want to watch me before the competition, you can watch from the stands. I can even prepare a cup of cocoa if you wish.”

Kemi seemed to light up at the suggestion and she nodded eagerly. “I would really like that…maybe I can try to skate a little too, if you wouldn’t mind? I’ve really been thinking about it a lot and learning seems like it would be a lot of fun.”

The videos she had watched of it…the ice skaters…more like ice dancers...they looked so free. And it almost seemed as though they were flying rather than…whatever it was they were doing. And the jumping…it was just…

Impressive.

“I will never say no to a cup of cocoa, but please. Let me come and support you.”

“If you’re free tomorrow, come by the rink at 9:30 PM. You’ll need to call me when you get there so I can let you in since the doors will be closed. Just remember to bring some warm clothes, maybe some gloves and ear muffs since it can get quite cold sitting in the stands.” She could try to remember to bring a fleece blanket to keep her lap warm just in case what she had wasn’t warm enough.

“We can look into doing a private lesson once the competition is over or if we schedule something actually during my work hours,” she said, her thoughts drifting to the logistics. If she planned ir right, she could probably swing a free session I should have credits I could use for a free lesson if I give the owner enough heads up. But even if it didn’t pan out, the thought of helping a friend find their footing on the ice made her feel a bit lighter.

Kemi brightened and nodded. “That…that would be outstanding! Yes please!” She didn’t hesitate before throwing her arms around Alcor and laughing softly. “I think that sounds so good. I will be there, and I will watch you and…it will be amazing!”

She could bring things to stay warm…maybe even fit a blanket into her backpack…it wouldn’t be too difficult. “I’ll see you then…please get home safe, okay?”

She didn’t want to cut their reunion short, but now she had to plan for tomorrow, and she was so excited to do so. “Don’t forget that I’m coming…unless you change your mind, then just let me know!”

“Don’t worry, I won’t forget,” Alcor reassured her friend. “I’ll see you tomorrow at around 9:30 PM. Make sure to get home safe.” Fortunately, Kemi wasn’t like Eleonora in that her twin seemed to be a magnet for trouble because of her curiosity. But she also didn’t know enough about Kemi yet to feel comfortable enough to not offer a few words of caution.
