Snowbunnies (2) : Winter seems to bring out the cutest of all rodents; this isn’t the first time that small, white rabbits have infested Destiny City. They’re small, rarely larger than a guinea pig, and have large eyes and wiggling noses. They are always pure white and seem to show up whenever there’s snow. They aren't menacing or evil, they're just everywhere. They seem strangely domesticated; they are sweet, curious, and friendly creatures that will eat anything you give them. They always seem cold to the touch, and when they shake, little snowflakes sprinkle off of them.

While they seem to be social creatures who seem to appreciate anything warm and will cuddle up to steal body heat, they are too skittish and fast to be kept for pets. They can show up just about anywhere, either alone or--often--in pairs. They tend to wander off on their own without any trouble, but if you surprise them or try to catch or hurt them, they may bite. Their little teeth are enough to break skin, but after one bite they run away. The bite itself isn’t bad, but the effects are a bit unpleasant: for roughly two days after the bite, the injury is cold and the victim will feel random, cold, shooting pains. Their core body temperature will drop and they will often be sent into random fits of shivering. No medicine seems to help, and no amount of blankets or hot baths can soothe the chill. You're just going to have to deal with it and hope it gets better…

Most experiences with the bunnies are perfectly pleasant, you just have to worry about them burrowing. There are holes peppering Destiny City, and with the fresh fallen snow it can be impossible to tell where they are hiding. The holes range from small holes to several feet deep, so can be a minor inconvenience to a potential hazard. On the bright side, sometimes you wind up covered in bunnies looking for warmth from their sudden guest. On the other hand, there are a rising number of trips to the hospital for twists and sprains. The bunnies always leave with the snow, so best to enjoy them--or avoid them--for as long as you can.

Fang stood, waiting for Muri to show up. He was early, as he always was—he never minded waiting around, enjoying the peace and quiet of standing alone. The snow was still alien to him, despite this being his third winter on Earth. It fell in quiet, fat clumps that tickled his ears constantly, resulting in steady little flicks one could've set a watch by. He sneezed when a flake grazed his nose, and as his senses returned to him after the brief shutoff, he noticed something—several somethings, actually—hopping around in the snow.

Fang scowled at them. "Go away," he said sharply as the rabbits, heedless of his command, pranced forward to snuggle at his feet.

He'd learned his lesson from last year, though. Do not try to hunt them. They were impossible to catch, and if they bit him, well. He didn't want a repeat of that shivering, terrible cold that couldn't be fixed for days at a time. He didn't kick them away, either, despite fearing their bite. Perhaps if he stayed still, they would just ignore him. He didn't want to just ignore them, himself, though, so he kept a watchful eye on them as they snuggled his boots and tried not to let fear force him into an action he'd regret.

Murikabushi didn’t enjoy running late for anything, especially not for meeting up with Fang. Double especially not when they were meeting up to go visit Fang’s world. Any adventures in space summoned Muri like a moth toward a flame, and any time spent on Earth instead of up in space? Counted as time wasted, in Muri’s book. Yet, here he was, late despite his best efforts, rushing through the increasingly thick snowfall and mentally preparing to explain why he hadn’t been perfectly on time. True, Muri knew Fang wouldn’t hold what had happened against him—none of it had really been within Muri’s control, after all—but he ran through what he wanted to say anyway.

Following the path to where they’d agreed to meet up, Muri picked up on the energy signature of another Order Eternal. Sure enough, Muri found Fang there waiting, and as he approached, Muri waved at his friend, trying to get Fang’s attention.

“I’m so sorry for being late,” Muri started as he got closer to Fang. He tried not to be too loud, mostly to avoid drawing any further attention to them than they’d already get as a pair of Order Eternals, hanging around in a park. “I had my shift at the café, and one of our other staff members got sick on shift. Not that they did it anywhere that was dangerous for customers, they made it to the restroom? But still, if you’re throwing up at work, we have to send you home. Then, Kieran couldn’t get somebody to cover until a later shift and I volunteered to stay overtime to help make sure he didn’t get totally swamped. And I didn’t think the overtime would run so late, but my replacement wound up being late to come clock in, and……”

Feeling something move against his foot, Muri cut off his apology/explanation. When he glanced down, he spotted a little rabbit, white as the snow around them, nuzzling at Muri in between rounds of sniffing at his pumps.

“Oh, hey there, cutie,” Muri cooed at the precious baby. And now that he was looking down, he saw the bunny who was snuggled up to Fang. “Aww, both of us got a little friend, huh?”

The longer Fang waited, the more tense he became. These rabbits were not his friends, and nor were they any kind of food. Certainly not a pet, either. He ignored the increasingly loud urges to fight or flee, holding fast to remaining completely still. Soon. Soon Murikabushi would be here, and he would do something to save Fang, he was sure of it. Where was he? Why was he late? This wasn't like him. And though Fang knew he had been early, and usually didn't care, this time, he worried. It was the only thing he could do. He couldn't even shift his weight or make his eyes fixate on anything other than the stupid, terrifying rabbits nestled at his feet. He hated that. Terrifying rabbits. They should have been scared of him, not the other way around. He was a hunter.

A hunter who knew when a prey wasn't worth the effort. And yet, this prey did not act like prey. The only thing Fang could compare it to from home was an irmula, an animal that he'd learned was extremely similar to an Earth capybara and the mythical Earth jackalope. Not many creatures hunted that thing—certainly not chrysocyon, anyway.

And yet, these stupid little rabbits were simple little rabbits! They were nothing like the irmula in size or shape. They had a devastating bite that wasn't even fatal, just sickening for a few days.

Paralyzed as he was, he almost didn't notice Murikabushi finally showing up, talking a mile a minute about his lateness, and Fang didn't even care anymore, because he was finally here and could rescue—

Wait. "No!" he blurted, leaning back and trying not to move his feet at all. "No, no, no. Not friend. Bad rabbits. Muri, help, Fang stuck!"

Murikabushi frowned up at Fang, looking utterly bemused at how his friend was reacting. None of this was entirely out of the ordinary for Fang, in that he often had strange reactions to things. The way that Fang looked at the universe didn’t always line up with how other people did.

“Fang, I’ve run into these little guys before,” he said, trying his best not to sound too frustrated. That wasn’t fair, not in general and especially not when Fang seemed so genuinely terrified of them. “They’re sweet, and nice. Not bad, I promise. They don’t want to hurt anybody. If they ever lash out at someone, it’s only because they’re scared. Them snuggling up on your feet like that? It means they trust you and they feel safe.”

But……well. Fang probably wasn’t in the mood to listen. Not until the rabbits were gone. With a soft sigh, Muri reached into his subspace. He had to take the lettuce off of a sandwich, but once he had, he crouched down closer to Fang’s feet, the snow, and the rabbits. Waving it distracted both of them, and soon enough, they hopped off of Fang’s feet and over to the leaf. With them preoccupied, sharing their tasty lettuce, Murikabushi stood up and held out a hand for Fang to take.

“Are you still okay to go to your world,” he asked.

Fang sagged in relief as they finally hopped away from his feet, enough that he could back up a couple of slow, careful steps.

"Yes!" he said, taking Muri's hand. He would explain about the rabbits another day. A moment later, they were vanished from Earth.
