Tis the season for gift giving, a sense of celebration as the year comes to an end. You get all the gifts you expect, and give some out as well. However, a strange, unmarked gift has arrived. You have no idea who sent it, or what it might be. Is it something from an admirer, or possibly a bit more sinister?

[ Your character receives an unexpected gift. Feel free to answer this prompt exploring the thoughts around such thing, the suspicion or confusion, maybe even resolving it with finding out who the gift giver was. Maybe it's someone you know, but it's a surprise. Maybe it's a mistake. The only way to find out is to open the present. ]

It was dark by the time Fiadah got home. Pleasantly buzzed from the hot drinks at the winter party, she didn't notice the package that was sitting on the ground in front of the door. She pulled out the house key and reached for the lock when her toes bumped something solid. A yelp was immediately followed by a loud 'thud' and a 'scraaaaape' as she tripped. Face first into the door and then sliding down the doorfront, Fiadah ended up lying prone with her legs elevated over the package and her face still pressed against the door. A few seconds later, her brain caught up with what had happened. "OWW! What the fu-!"

Nimia ll 1

The Matorian had been pleasantly tucked away for the night with her lessons and a few 'light' reads when a noise at the front startled her. In an instant the mage light she'd been using instead of a lamp tripled into three smaller bulbs, and Nimia slipped out of bed to investigate. Their house wasn't nearly big enough for everyone to have their own rooms, especially since adding brothers and visiting family into the mix, so it was inevitable she would wake someone; if the noise hadn't already.

She peered around the corner, as terrified of the noise as she would have been an actual intruder until hearing an all too familiar voice. Nimia's shoulders instantly sagged and the mage lights took on a warmer, brighter hue. "Fiadah..." She sighed and crouched down to help her sister up. "What did I tell you about coming home alone like this? You should have sent someone to fetch me."

Calliana ll 1

Calli opened her eyes with a grimace. It was bad enough sharing a room with her NIECE, who stayed up all hours of the night reading with those stupid mage lights, but now this? "What's all that noise?" She hissed from her spot on the bed. When Nimia paid her no mind Calliana sat up, murmuring something foul under her breath, before reaching for her night coat at the foot of the bed. It wasn't something she used often; actually, it was something she hadn't even bothered with before this trip, but these Zenan nights....Spirits they were brutal. Which made this intrusion all the more annoying.

She followed her niece, keen to keep out of sight until she saw the wretched state of her other niece. Calli couldn't help it; she let out a laugh before one look from Nimia shushed it. "Sorry - sorry - just wasn't expecting this." The teenager moved closer, her body crouching to help when something else caught her eye. "What's under your leg, Fiadah?"

Her fingers gingerly explored her face to check for injuries. Maybe a couple scrapes that stung smartly, but it didn't seem too bad.

She gasped and flinched away when the door opened, worried it would be one of her fathers beyond the threshold. Instead, she looked up at her sister with a goofy grin and shook her head. "I'm fiiiiine. You wouldn'ta known I was here if it weren't for my feet." Honestly, what were her feet doing betraying her like this?

She blinked at her aunt and felt a little heat cross her cheeks "Ah, sorry Calli. I didn't mean anything. Just wanna go to bed an' be quiet like the rest of you." She reached out to take Calli's arm so that she could at least get up onto her knees. "Eh? You mean it weren't my feet?" She reached back and pulled the package forward. "Ah! This is the culprit!"

Nimia - 2

"That doesn't make it better," Nimia grumbled. It seemed that between the boys and Fiadah she would never get a decent nights sleep. The mage leaned back a little, tugging at the edges of her robe as the globules shifted to shed more light onto the strange package.

"Who would have left this? The suns been down for hours." She couldn't imagine anyone local getting out this late in the evening. If the frost didn't get them then the beasts would. Speaking of, wouldn't those in her papa's care have alerted them to any trespassers?

Once she was sure Fiadah was up and stable, her eyes drifted to the aforementioned package. "Maybe it's from an admirer? Someone who didn't want to get caught? There are two lovely, eligible ladies that live here~" She waggled her brows with a grin. The boys were still far too young and while she was sure their fathers got a few sultry looks from time to time everyone in the village knew they were a happily married couple.

"Is that where you really were, Fiadah? Off chasing some pretty face? And when they couldn't find you they left this here instead?"

Fiadah grinned up at her sister with a woozy giggle. "Presents don't sleep at night," she assured confidently.

She chuckled at Calliana's line of questioning. "People shouldn't be so sneaky. The whole point of bein' sweet on someone is getting ta know them better. Can't do that just giving boxes." Her brow rose and a playful grin soon followed. "Aaah, plenty o' pretty faces, but no chasin' tonight." She turned the package toward Nimia's lights and squinted. "Hey, it's got both our names on it."

She held the package out to Nimia. "Here! Let's open it inside. It's freaking chilly out here."

Nimia - 3

Goddess save me. "Alright, let's get you inside." Since Calli already had a hold on her sister Nimia focused on opening the door and making sure there were no stray boots or rugs to trip Fiadah again. Once she was sure her Aunt had a handle on things, Nimia took the package and carried it in.

She squinted down at the names, her eyesight poorer without her spectacles, and frowned. "It does have our names," She murmured. But why?

Calliana - 3

"Well, maybe someone did." She did her best to stabilize Fiadah and once Nimia had the door opened the hybrid ushered her niece inside. It was a wonder no one else had woken up, but maybe her brother's family were deeper sleepers?

Calli didn't wait for Nimia to close the door before she shuffled Fiadah over toward the fireplace. The embers had been snuffed out hours ago, but if she worked at it she could get it going again. "You should open it, Fiadah; you tripped over it, after all."

Fiadah cocked her head a couple times for further inspection of the package. Eventually, her lips pursed out in a pout. "That ain't fair. Nothin' for Aunt CallI?" She looked over and grinned again. "Don't worry though! I'll share if I can."

The offer to open the package made her hum softly. Was the room tilting or was that just her? "What'dya think, Nimia? Maybe you should do it. I kinda feel bad fer trippin' on it an' all that." In the next moment, she was holding out her hands for the item with a playful smirk. "Unless ya want me to."

"As if I need more admirers," Calli scoffed. She rolled her eyes, hamming up the dramatics for all of a minute before grinning. The hybrid moved around the room, careful to be as quiet as possible, as she went to the kitchen. It wasn't hard to find the pitcher of fresh water that had been prepped before bed, but finding a cup in an unfamiliar kitchen...

...now that was a task. She might have bumped around a little but every time Calli paused to listen the only ones she could hear moving were her nieces.

She returned in short order with three items; a chunk of bread, a cup of water and a bowl, all for Fiadah. "Hopefully you won't need all three, but just in case."

Nimia - 4

"No no, it's alright, I've got it." What if she dropped it? Any other time she wouldn't think twice about letting Fiadah - that wasn't true. She would always fuss and worry about her sister's decisions; it just came with her nature. Settling down beside her, Nimia flicked a hand so that her globules of light went to the fire place and transformed into a flame that warmed the room.

"Hopefully there's nothing in here that will bite me," She mused and started to open the package. Nimia cautiously peeled away the packaging, took a deep breath and looked inside at...two pendants? "Necklaces?" She reached in to lift one up and inspect it. The pendants were made of crystal or some sort of nearly translucent gem and were far finer than anything she'd seen. When she touched it the pendant started to glow and hum with warmth-

-which caused the other to hum as well.

Fiadah smirked at Calli. "I bet the admirers are right lined up for your attention." She had a good looking family, and her aunt was no exception! She couldn't help occasionally wondering how she would look if she was a blood member of the family...

Nimia's denial earned a giggle and a nod of approval. One less thing for her to try focusing on! Especially now that she had a snack in front of her! She took a large bite of the bread and leaned over to peer at the package. Her brow rose with surprise. "Wow. Those 're pretty," she observed around the mouthful of bread. She started to reach out for the second necklace, but the sudden glow made her freeze and force down the food in her mouth. A swig of water chased the dry bite awkwardly down her throat. Ouch.. "Maybe you should put that down.." she said softly while giving the glowing pendant a suspicious glare.

Nimia - 5

She probably should have put them down, but Nimia couldn't help reaching into the box for the second pendant. "They're so warm." The mage murmured, the feeling of lively magic thrumming down her arms. As long as she was holding both they glowed steadily, but when she gave one a squeeze the other pulsed. It was almost like a heart beat.

When she lowered the second pendant back into the box only the first remained glowing; as if the loss of contact had taken it's strength. "What are they?"

Calliana - 5

Calli put her hands on Fiadah's shoulders and leaned over her niece's shoulder to take a look. "Oh! I've seen those before. Or...well, something like it, anyway. In Jauhar." She smiled. "They called them soul crystals or bonding or...whatever, I don't remember. The point is it's a way to connect people even if they're apart. As long as you're wearing them they won't do anything but if you touch them with your hands they'll light up, letting the other person know you're thinking about them. They're enchanted and very valuable. Doesn't make sense why someone would just leave them outside."

Or why she didn't get one. Sure, these two were sisters, but she was their Aunt! Didn't that count for anything?!
