As the year comes to an end, an abnormal cold snap has taken over Tendaji. The mountains of Zena are covered in a blizzard, and even the desert of Oba is feeling a bit of an abnormal chill.

[ What do you get up to during the cold? Do you find a place to warm up, or check up on a friend? ]

Eliazer coughed a few times into his fisted hand before tightening the scarf around his neck. As much as he'd come to use it to disguise his marking, an abnormally harsh storm had settled in Zenner making it hard to get around. Collecting information and making moves was made all the harder by winds that were strong enough to cut his skin and in an instant of leaving any building his very core was frozen.

He honestly couldn't remember a time when a winter storm had laid seige to the city with this much vigor, but now that it was here they were powerless against it. Spend too much time outside and you would risk frostbite. Even walking was hard with snow that nearly swallowed his legs, let alone any soul shorter than him.

So after a fruitless search for info Eli had settled for grabbing some supplies (what he could nab with meager coin, that is) before heading back to the inn.

Goodness, one might think that having some iceling blood would be a benefit in this situation! But nooooo~! Honi shivered as she stared at the tiny fireplace of the ramshackle room she and Eli were staying in for now. With minimal spending money, she'd braved the outside to grab the last bit of pottery from the shop that she had made. With that, she had been able to trade for some firewood.

Lighting a fire with numb fingers was no easy task, but finally, finally, that thin, blissful line of smoke rose and the faint glow of a fire began to gorge itself on the kindling until wee flames licked along the chopped wood. The touch of warmth to her face made Honi smile with relief. Part of her was grateful to have such a limited space for the fire, for that reduced the risk of having yet another building burn down around her. Yet, unfortunately, she was sure that most of the room wouldn't feel even a tickle of the heat.

By the time he'd reached their room Eliazer's fingers were numb. He'd long since lost feeling in his ears, even after moving the scarf up his neck. There just wasn't helping it; they didn't have the funds to properly prepare for weather like this and he'd had to endure. It wasn't the first winter his lack of coin had kept him from being comfortable, but it was the first he'd felt guilty for it. With his family they'd just come to accept it; with Honi he...couldn't.

When he came in to see her next to the barest scrap of a fire his heart ached. Things had been a little...off, since the fight with Adhira and Eli hadn't tried to push things. Still, as he gently closed the door behind him Eli offered an almost sheepish smile as he brought his findings over to her. He didn't bother taking off his boots, why risk losing the warmth?, and simply settled down next to her by the fire.

"It's not much, but at least it's good?" He signed, fingers stiff from disuse and cold. Inside the satchel were a few small husks of bread and a slice of roast...something. The smell had been good enough that he took the chance. "Got it from the general store. His wife made it."

Honi's eyes snapped over at the creak of the door; a momentary concern in her eyes, and then relief. She scootched enough to make sure Eli had the same exposure to the little fire. It was a little tough to read his hands, but she thought she got the idea. "It's going to taste great," she assured without hesitation. The sight of the meager meal was enough to make her stomach growl loudly, which in turn sent heat to her cheeks. It could have been a pouch of those overly sour fruits she had tried early after their arrival and she still would have been delighted to eat it.

Even so, she made sure to portion out the bread to leave a little more for Eli than she took for herself. The medicine she had gotten him certainly seemed to have helped, and she was determined to make sure he recovered as well as he could. He needed his strength more. If only she'd had enough pottery left to trade for more food. For more of anything.

At that point, her expression turned apologetic. "There were a lot of people at the studio today. All of them trying to stay warm with the kiln running on low. I'll have to wait for this freeze to break before I can make anything more to sell or trade. The last piece I had got us the extra wood." Her eyes fell to the thin flame. It was better than nothing... "If we keep it low, it should last us the night."

Eliazer was so cold he didn't question the way Honi portioned their meal. If he'd been feeling more himself he might have pinched that extra sliver off and snuck it onto her side. As it stood his fingers could barely pinch enough to pop into his own mouth before Eli held them in front of the fire once more.

When he tried to moved his hands to respond to her he found them stiff and nearly painful to move. The cold was leaving his digits and in their wake came an uncomfortable tingling sensation that caused him to grimace.

He managed the sign for 'thank you' before thrusting his fingers at the meager fire once more. The brief thought of writing came to mind, but if he couldn't make his fingers work how would he hold a piece of coal?

It wasn't any gourmet meal, but Honi tried to savor it as much as she could. Considering how easy it would have been to spiral into a much darker frame of mind, she clutched at whatever goodness she could find. A tiny fire that was better than nothing, a few bites of food that was decently made, having company again. The little things would keep that desperately needed light going.

Oh, but that looked painful... "Here. Let me help." She slowly reached out to gingerly pull one of Eli's arms back to her. Even to her chilled fingers, Eli's felt like icicles as she attempted to rub some warmth back into them for him.

Eliazer's body went rigid, but he didn't fight it when Honi took his hand in hers. It would have been easier to focus on the fire if little jolts of warmth - or maybe it was pain? - sparked around his fingers every time she touched them. In his heart it was special because it was her, but physically it was uncomfortable because of just how cold he really was.

His eyes shifted from the fire, to Honi, to the floor, back to the fire and finally back to Honi. After a moment's hesitation he moved his free hand, pressed it against the floor and used it to help him scoot a little closer to her until their bodies touched. She might push him away, but he didn't stop until the side of his body was gobsmacked against hers. And then he made the sign for 'warm' before waiting to see how she'd respond.

Honi's mind was drifting to what she could possibly make use of to get them some mittens. If this cold decided to stick around, the extra protection would be vital. She firmed her hold slightly when Eli began to shift and looked up, afraid that he was about to move away. Yet, he only got closer! A lot closer.

He wanted to sleep? No, that was the wrong sign. "Warm?" She certainly felt warmer with him pressed so close... It was enough to allow a tiny smile to rise. She echoed the move and leaned back against Eli's side. She shimmied under his arm and made sure it was wrapped around her so that she could continue trying to warm his fingers as well.

If he was lucky she wouldn't push him away. They'd certainly been through enough in the past couple of - days? weeks? - for it to be warranted. Eli wouldn't have blamed her if she pushed away and yet -

- there she was. Nudging closer. His body stiffened, cheeks warming up to nearly burn and he had to force himself to breath properly. The Geian cleared his throat and eagerly - far too eagerly - shifted so that he could better keep his arm around her. They didn't have many moments like this; peaceful, quiet things that so many tended to overlook. Not him, though. Never him.

After a moment's hesitation he leaned over and kissed the top of her head.

At first, Honi thought it would be enough to just have Eli there. To have that connection again. To be close to someone. In this freezing cold room, that would surely be satisfactory.

Then Eli shifted as well to accommodate her further, and her stomach tightened with.. What was the word for this? Content certainly wasn't the right word. Was it happiness? She had no idea of what word would fit what that clench inside. That feeling was fanned by the touch to the top of her head, and it propelled her forward. She squeezed her eyes shut and turned to hug herself as tightly to Eli as she could manage with her aching limbs. She took a deep breath, and spoke softly. “I’m sorry, Eli. I’m sorry I’m not more helpful. I’m sorry for the things I’ve been messing up and getting you hurt. I’m sorry I doubted you. I- oh, I’m just sorry for everything.” She could feel the tears try to well up in her eyes, and squeezed her lids tighter together to plead them to stay away.

Everything happened so fast that Eliazer's mind was left spinning after. His body instinctively shifted so that she could rest more comfortably against him and that he, in turn, could nearly melt around her. There were still so many things he felt nervous about when it came to Honi, but not this - never this. Having her close felt so right and when she started to apologize his heart ached.

There was no way for him to tell her it was alright and it killed him. If he reached for his notebook it would be one hand that wasn't touching her and if he moved to sign Eli would have to scoot away and he just - he just couldn't. So, instead, he gave her a squeeze before pulling back just to lift her chin with his fingers. When he had her at the right angle he kissed next to her left eye, then the right, before dipping down and kissing her lips.

Part of her felt relief at finally taking the chance to express and release the guilt had been digging at her mind for so long now. It would take more to get her to let that pain go though. She just hoped Eli would feel good about it as well, and accept it.

She gasped softly at the touch to her chin. Gods, his fingers were still so cold! Maybe he would have been better off by now if she hadn't been such trouble for him... Honi kept her eyes squeezed shut. Part of her knew that she shouldn't have any reason to fear Eli's response, but if she could just prepare for- Oh!

Even Eli's lips were cold, but they sparked a warmth through her that almost made her forget their miserable conditions. Her lips parted to sigh softly as the creases around her eyes softened under the second kiss, no longer holding them so tight. Her stiff fingers tightened their grip as she pressed up into the touch now to her lips. A few tears slipped down her cheeks, warm with gladness and relief.

Eliazer watched her breath come out in visible puffs, and instead of fussing over the chill she must have felt a new feeling overcame him. He'd been the one to make her breath quicken like that, and even with the ever present threat of frost he couldn't shake that feeling of pride that swelled in him. He did that to her; he was the one that made her feel that way. For just a sliver of time everything else faded as Eliazer took joy in her reactions, and a part of him wanted more.

It was selfish - too much, too greedy - but when she sighed he was nearly undone. Eliazer raised a hand to gingerly cup her head, his fingers lacing through her hair to offer what comfort he could. There were a thousand things he wished he could have done differently, but meeting Honi? He wished he could go back in time just so he could do it again.

The cold didn't matter so much right then. It bit at the edge of her consciousness, but what did that compare to the feeling of being held so warmly? It certainly wasn't just the bitter chill that sent goosebumps along her skin when Eli's fingers burrowed into her hair. Not at all. An eager moan slipped out as she hugged herself tighter against him in response.

The little things in life made surviving tolerable, but these deeper connections really made that light glow bright.
