Quote:
Snow Fairies (4) : On a cold winter night, when the moon is nearly full and bright in the sky, you hear laughter. At first, you can't place it, but then you feel little pokes and prods, tugs on your hair, your clothes. Sometimes you think you see something out of the corner of your eye--a small, icy body. Sometimes you hear wings flapping in the night. As long as you are out in the cold, you feel eyes on you and you find yourself the target of small mischief from what seems to be icy little fairies, though they move too fast for you to see or grab. They never speak, only laugh. When you go inside, or venture anywhere with too much light or heat, they seem to disappear and do not bother you again.

Jishui was on her own for the night and she had felt another bit of chaos, different yet again from the misbegotten Senshi, and that of that…sludge creature that she and Haik had fought and destroyed.

She didn’t want to start a fight…she knew that she wouldn’t be able to hold her own. Not alone. She wasn’t large…and wasn’t strong and her magic was just…

Useless.

She knew that she should check this out, should figure out what other Chaos infected this world but…

Truthfully, Jishui didn’t want to. She should have brought Haik with her, and patrolled with him but…

Blowing out a breath and watching it form in the cold air, she finally just made her way towards the feeling of Chaos, stopping when the…well. She supposed they were a Senshi, came into view.

“...I’ve not come across one of you before…what are you?” It wasn’t…rude. Just direct. Jishui wanted answers...and hopefully, she would be able to get some.

Hekate looked visibly confused by the question and looked over her shoulder where her wraith would normally be hovering only to remember that it had been sent back to Mirrorspace only fifteen, maybe twenty, minutes ago.

Her energy gathering for the evening had been easily filled with night settling upon Destiny City at about 5:00 PM. It meant that there were still many people out and about doing some evening shopping and her uniform was easy enough to hide behind a fur-trimmed long winter coat.

I guess the question was directed at me… Not that she’d know how to explain a wraith that had no voice and only had one expression - resting b***h face.

“I’m a human,” she replied with an almost cynical tone as if the answer was obvious but she also knew the White Moon Senshi meant to ask what faction she belonged to. “I belong to the Dark Mirror Court,” she added with an unamused expression. Something about this felt a bit de-ja-vu; like this encounter was about to go sideways quicker than an iced-over slanted driveway and a person wearing slippers with untextured soles instead of waffle stompers.

Jishui frowned, her eyes glowing faintly in the darkness as they always did. “It…is good to know that you’re a human…I had figured that much on my own…”

She took a few steps closer, tilting her head slightly and trying to figure out what the Dark Mirror Court could be.

Finally, she simply gave up. “I’m…afraid I have never heard of this? What is the Dark Mirror Court? I met…a different Senshi who was…overtaken by Chaos…but you feel different…and look different…you have no cracks on your skin…”

Did that make it better, or worse? This Senshi was chaos without…unfortunate signs? But.

“Have you always been infected with Chaos…?”

Hekate’s eyes narrowed in warning when the pink-clad senshi stepped forward.

“Infected?” she replied, her tone accentuating her confused expression. “No - I’m not infected.” At least Hekate didn’t think she was. Wouldn’t that imply that she was sick?

Such a strange question. “That would be like me asking if you have always been infected with Order.” It sounded just as silly in her head as it did spoken out loud. But it seemed someone shared a similar humor as a chorus of soft giggles erupted around. A melodious sound but also quite eerie.

“I’m not one to like playing games, so if this is your doing, I suggest you stop.” She’d already encountered one insane Senshi not long ago; made her see demon faces in the moon and get trapped in a board game. The last thing Hekate needed was for this one to make her feel like she was going insane again.

“But…” Jishui shook her head, trying to find a way to word her concerns so that they weren’t…accusations...this planet was sick. This world was tainted, just as her own was…it…

“Chaos isn’t…natural...it’s not your fault…it…it poisons…I…”

Was that the right thing to say? She seemed more open to speak than the last one but…

Then there was a sickening…uncomfortable stream of laughter and she stopped where she stood, frowning and looking around, trying to figure out if this was magic or if this was…just another way this planet messed with you.

“...The laughter is not me…is it not your magic?”

“If it’s not you, and it’s not me, then whomever or whatever is out here with us seems to find humor in your false allegations,” Hekate said sharply, her gaze sweeping the shadows.

Magic and monsters were things most would deem unnatural, but she had long learned otherwise. Despite her rank, she was not new to this war. Order and Chaos were the most natural states of being, opposites that could not exist without the other, no matter how heavily one outweighed its counterpart.

Hekate was about to add another pointed remark when something flickered in the corner of her vision. A glimmer, a tiny, fairy-like figure of shimmering ice hovered for a mere moment in her peripheral.

Before she could add to her pointed comment, Hekate caught sight of a glimmer from the corner of her eyes, a small fairy, delicate lithe form made of what might be ice. One blink, however, and it was gone, but the flitting sounds of wings flappy beside her face made her more than flinch.

Then it was gone.

Hekate flinched as a sudden sharp sound of wings buzzed past her ear. Her heartbeat quickened, and she snapped her head toward the sound, but the fairy had vanished into the stillness of the night where only laughter lingered.

“Enough is enough.” Her tone was laced with irritation as she extended her right arm forward. “Jinx.”

Purple smoke formed in her palm and snaked forward into the shadows. The creatures were too quick to be seen, too quick to target, so she aimed her magic at the only one not moving. “I am not interested in being the butt of anyone’s joke, I hope you understand.” Let this White Moon Senshi humor the creatures alone.

Jishui was feeling…utterly uncomfortable. The laughter was starting to get under her skin, and she wanted nothing more than to leave. She didn’t understand what this was. The only Chaos she could feel was that of the other Senshi, but there was clearly…something else about.

“I understand, I understand your feelings, I don’t understand what it is that’s–”

She looked over at the Chaos infected Senshi and was going to give a smile, some sort of reassurance, but she saw a dark…something creeping towards her.

Magic? She was attacking…her...

“I…” What little hope that had ballooned in her chest seemed to go out and she took a step backwards. “...You are attacking me?” Her voice grew higher on the last word and there was panic clear in her eyes.

Hekate brought two fingers to her brow and gave the White Moon Senshi a mock salute. “You know what they say,” she quipped, her tone laced with mischief. A smirk curled the corner of her lips before adding, “You don’t need to be faster than the bear to get away, you just need to outrun the person next to you.”

She winked, her lime green eyes gleaming with a teasing glint. “Have fun with the fae,” she added, stepping back with confidence hoping they’d find amusement in her fumbling.

Hekate retreated slowly at first so as not to draw immediate attention.

No, honestly Jishui had never heard of that saying before in her life, and she watched, eyes round and filled with some horror as the other Senshi abandoned her.

It took a good, long while before she was comfortable enough to start moving as well…not wanting to deal with…whatever a fae was…and wishing that she hadn’t tried to trust someone who was infected with Chaos…

Clearly, that was just a bad idea all around.
