Thoraka 1

It was their first day back at the ranch for the new year and what a day it was. The air despite being in a tropical region was oddly well frigid and Thoraka was unimpressed, he had hoped to go for a nice swim and get rid of the travel dust and cramped muscles. But instead he was wrapped in his towel, shivering, staring resentfully at water that was awfully grey and roily for a good swim. He licked his lips in irritation and resignedly folded the towel back up and got into a new set of clothes.

"Lame." He muttered. He had no books he wanted to read. He supposed he would go for a walk..with a coat...around to the beast pens. That was always fun the ranch was always stuffed full to the brisket with all the critters one could shake a stick at. Maybe he would get one this year. He did have Armena whom he called to him but he thought that a janarim might be fun too.
"Come on girl." He called to the radaku, "Lets see if we can pick you out a new friend." He set off for the beast pens successfully distracted from his sulk.

Vhallas 1

He was so excited. His two janarim were expecting hatchlings! There had been a lot of deliberation but the breeding had finally been a success and he was so excited for the results. Since it was their first breeding he would absolutely be keeping a cub from the litter and because they were his he got to choose what to do with the babies.

He was mooning over the female who was guarding her nest with a hard and glinty eye. She was so glorious and when she wasn't broody she had a decent temperament. He knew that critters were where he belonged. His parents might not be tamers but he knew in his heart already that he was going to be. He had all the resources here he could possibly want. He would probably need grandpa's help who would be over joyed at his choice and if he wanted to dabble in snaptrotters ever he could bother Great Uncle Thal. He was set. He was enjoying the quiet moment and didn't notice the other prentices' approach.

Thoraka 2

He noticed a boy about his age if not his height looking fondly at a pair of janarim guarding a nest of eggs. "Hey, uh how does one go about getting one of these beauties, I have a radaku already but I really would like to have a janarim companion too. They are so elegant." He tilted his head and pondered why all of Ustasis's family looked so very similar. He and his brother hardly looked alike and they were in the same family. He found it quite amusing.

"Wow, those are two fine looking janarim. I can never get over how well the breeding program is coming on. Where are you guys getting your bloodlines? Can I help?" He hadn't expected to offer assistance but the whole thing was so fascinating. These were sharp sleek well muscled beasts that looked like moving pieces of art. Man if he hadn't have loved storm magic so much this would have been a possibility. Critters were fun. He had endless hours of fun with his radaku, teaching her to hunt and listen to cues, she was a smart girl and he was hoping to compete in hunting trials with her.

He gave the other boy a clever side eye. "Well it just so happens to be your lucky day, uh cousin.. yes I think thats what you would be to me. Maybe second cousin something along those lines, not by blood but by bond. My grandma and your dad were besties growing up. Mom told me all about it. Glad to see you are back for a stint in the gold country. "(Because tropical sunbeams everywhere).

He gestured at the janarim, "This lot happens to be mine, and they are about to hatch, as it is my pair I have some control over where the eggs go. So help yourself, they are going to get to full hatching any minute now and you can go in and pick fresh from the nest. Just be polite or mom and dad might growl."

This was the best day ever this had been a dream of his for so long, to have his own clutch rearing to hatch. "Hear the peeps? That's how you know its any moment now, them cubs are just raring to go."

Thoraka 3

He didn't much care about the geneology involved here but the beasts were certainly interesting enough to hold his attention. "They are your's?" He asked with awe in his voice, man this boy was younger than he was and he had a breeding pair already. Man it paid to grow up in a beast taming family with more beasts than sense it appeared. But they were kind and long term family friends so he would behave as he ought. They deserved respect. Especially if this one wanted to gift him a baby and one he could pick out as they hatched, how amazing. "I will pay you back, I will take this opportunity, thank you." He bowed low to the other boy. It was an honor, a janarim was a big responsibility and one he didn't take lightly.
"This is way more than I could have hoped for. The parents are such fine beasts, I think you chose really well who to breed to whom." he was honestly interested in how they did it, critters were awesome and yet another connection to nature and life.

"Oh not a problem, we have a bit more leeway with things when it is our clutch, ye needn't repay me, consider it a gift. I will have my hands full with the others she laid 9 eggs, some would be sold as pet quality anyway. If they kept every breeding baby for the program they would be quickly over run so it was better to take the best of the best and sell/ rehome the others. Besides it felt good to be the one gifting for a change. The gifting of critters in that family was a common practice and helped strengthen familial bonds. To him Thoraka as surly and cranky as he looked was also family by relation to his Grandma there for family, no if ands or buts in this case blood or not did not matter much.

He had the same no nonsense approach as his Great Uncle Thallassa, something his own grandpa was no doubt concerned with, he hadn't gotten the ruthless cutting edge of his mother. He was a bit more happy go lucky.

Thoraka 4

This boy was acting like he had known Thoraka his whole life, which he supposed in a way he had but they had never hung out like they were right then. He supposed it would be nice to have another friend here, and there was no easier in than an interest in critters. Boys would be boys and he had chosen to tame storms, but he could tell just by looking at this boy that the beasts were his true calling, it was in the way he stood in the way he looked at them. In the soft way he stroked the armored hide. He adored these animals and Thoraka would take the best care of the baby he had been awarded.

He would be a pet parent from this day forward and he would learn as much as he could about janarim and the best way to take care of them.

"I don't suppose you offer training courses for folks like me, a radaku is a bit different than a janarim hey." He was not above taking lessons if it was the right thing for him and his critter which it was in his opinion.

Vhallas 4

"Hmm janarim, yeah that would be Great Uncle Thal or Grandpa, Janarim are grandpa's specialty but Uncle Thal is pretty good with the big toothy critters too, though his main focus is snaptrotters. They are willing to take on apprentices sometimes, I could ask for you if you like. Then there is Umen and Tathyryal. Umen is more snaptrotter and Tathy is more aligned with smaller critters so the first two I mentioned are better options."

He had to admit to himself that he could be a bit of a babbler but he took pride in knowing the specialties of his family, He would have mentioned his grandma too but she was more into medicine and chronically busy because of it. So she was already off the list. "I plan to be a beast tamer too, though it half skipped my parents generation. Mom chose the way of the blade and the sea and Dad is a ranger but not the beasty kind he is more hunter ranger so I learned a lot about moving quietly from him and how to fight from mom. I'm rather well rounded I think, and I like pottery too but I think critters are where my heart lies."

Thoraka 5

He smiled. "I know, I can see your passion for them in your face, I am sure that like me, you have found where you are meant to be." Somehow it felt very grown up talking about this sort of thing with the boy. Whos name he gathered eventually was Vhallas. It sounded very iceling that name and he wondered if his Dad had named him or his Mom. Thoraka had been named after the thing he loved most. Lightning. It was like his parents had just known somehow. Not that there was a storm the night he was born not that at all, he smirked.

"I chose to be an elementalist and to work with storm magic. It his heady and powerful and headstrong. I love it, it was what I was meant to do. Its even in my name." He gazed up at the pure blue sky, wishing for thunderclouds and that solid dark smudge of grey that indicated a properly angry storm. "I know it will be forever until storm season comes around again and I figure I will fill that time with critter taming. "

Vhallas 5

"Aye I gather my passion is rather obvious, it runs thick in my bloodline see. Better get in there Thoraka, with your collar, they are hatching now." He opened the gate and pushed the male into the next pen over. He would be a problem potentially that Vhallas really would rather not deal with while the babies were hatching. The Mom may get crabby but she as a rule was calmer than her chosen buck. He took his own collar for his own critter and stood ready with Thoraka. "So long as we don't chose the same one I don't think there will be a problem. First rule is, there are no rules." He grinned sharply. Perhaps there was a little of his Mama in him after all.

This was the greatest day of his life and at least there was someone around who shared his enthusiasm, how awesome it was that Thoraka had wanted a janarim and had walked up the trail just at the right time. It was funny how fate worked really.

Thoraka 6

It was time. Many of the eggs around him were hatching and there was indeed a prodigous nine in number. This had to be the very coolest moment of his life. Animals were the coolest beings and it seemed smart to him to hatch from an egg or flower unlike poor earthlings and their method of reproduction. Hooo, he was glad he was a flower bud baby. Little whip like tails where unraveling for the first time, baby janarim were cute but gangly. He eyed the first three that hatched, looking for something he could not quite describe and Vhallas he could see doing the same thing. Picking your beast was an art unto itself. There were good solid choices but no beast that screamed that they were the one. He watched and he waited. Two more eggs hatched. He also sort of wished that Vhallas would chose first since it was his beast. He thought though that it was very fair to have them both looking during the hatching, couldn't get more first pick than that. Especially for a free beast.

He admired the beauties that emerged. Finally he spied and collared a baby with dark black hide, blue eyes and rainbow blotches. What a specimen! He wasn't even sure which gender it was yet.

Vhallas 6

He chose a black based beast with red eyes and red tiger stripes with a tail and right hind foot that looked like they were ducked in the rainbow ink from their Dad. He couldn't be happier with the little female he got. Once he saw Thoraka had chosen, he grabbed a spare collar, this was an exceptional batch, what else could he do, and collared another baby, this time a solid gray with a red head and rainbow blotched dorsal. This was a fine male that would make a fine stud one day.

He checked the other boys beast. "Woo what a critter! That is also a male, keep in contact we might want to see how his genetics do in the program, you would get a pup or compensation then too. Its a great deal." He winked. "Good boy." He petted the new comer's new baby. "You be good for your Dad now, uphold your family honor you spicey little thing you, no nibbling..no." He grinned and roughled damp janarim armor. "They look real good, I'll bet we can watch the rest hatch and then go from there. There are a few forms you have to fill out but nothing serious"

Thoraka 7

He was sort of in shock. His baby boy was so beautiful that it made him nearly want to cry. A giant in tiny paws at the moment, they were still big for his size. A mighty friend this boy would make him down the line, with a radaku, a sailscale and a janarim no one was going to bug him ever. Just the way he liked it. He could travel very far once this little one grew up and was trained. Oh what an adventure this was going to be. It was overwelming. "Thank you," he murmured to the boy who had shared with him such awesomeness. "I am truly grateful, I think you chose fine critters too. Ooh look at that bright green one, that is interesting!"

One of these things was not like the other. He looked at the stud and the dame and tilted his head. Something didn't add up, though he supposed it could come from the rainbow ink buck...somehow he didn't think so. "How odd." Seemed like there was some politics among the janarim. He was amused.

Vhallas 7

Vhallas looked over and burst out laughing. "Oh him! That would be the one off offspring from a fellow who was here for a 'broken leg', sure looks like he cleared the fence just find on the injury. I'll have to let Mom know that her kennel is less secure than it could be. These things sometimes happen, even with the best of planning. Don't worry that little one will get a good home if not the same er pedigree sheet as the rest of them." He was still chucking as he checked the feet of his critter. All seemed well. "He will have to stay for a while with his mom, it is much easier at this needy stage to have her look after them, but the collar will stay with him, do not worry. You will get the same beasty when he is ready to be weaned."
He handed Thoraka the paper work and accepted the filled out forms back. "Alright well, congrats on your new best friend, may he be loyal and true. I have to get this to the office but after that we could have tea?"

And so they did and got to know each other just a bit better.
