 Hrafn 1 It was the time of year for celebrating your friends, and this year when it rolled around she had someone in mind. He had been very supportive in a time of need and they had hung out a few times since going for walks and getting juice, talking about what they wanted to do when they grew up. She knew but he was still struggling with his choice.
She thought about his character and what she knew about him and found a book on critters of tendaji to give to him. It seemed right up his alley in her estimation. She wrapped it up and had it ready. She would have to drop it off herself, good thing he was at the ranch which was the easiest place on the island to find for locals as the darn area was so big there were jokes that it supported whole town, if anything it boosted the economy at least.
She afixed a tag and a special note and with that her ensemble was ready. Thinking hard she added a sachet of her favorite tea. There that would be a pretty good combo. She smiled as she felt the rush of spoiling someone when she could. It just felt good and dare she say she might need to get a few more friends.

Vhallas 1 He too had a gift for her, but his was considerably harder to wrap. One of his janarim had fathered a clutch and he had asked for two eggs, one for himself and one for Hrafn. He loved Janarim and thought one could never have enough.
So why would he not get her one too? She had only two handsome radaku after all but a janarim was a great protection critter too.
"You be good," he admonished the obsidian black and dark blue creature. It was a male and a specimen and a half. He had a nearly identical twin to this one. His
great Grandpa had thought it a most excellent thing and bragged about his great grandson's choice of pairing. The beast taming blood continued to run thick in the veins or some such old people nonsense. He shrugged, great grandpa could be very excitable but he to thought it was a very cool coincidence.
Most importantly they were healthy and sharp looking beasts with good minds and good temperaments it was excellence all around and he got to gain some experience in a field he was interested in. And now he got to increase the awesomeness.
He started in Hrafn's direction, she was the daughter of a Tale noble lady he figured and the Matori gardener. A long standing family in town.

She stumbled over something too. A wrapped book that had no sender. She grinned. Perhaps Vhallas too had thought of her. How sweet! She had a light lit in her mind now. They were good friends. He was considerate and intelligent a rare combination in the people she had met so far.
She opened the book, it featured botany of tendaji and it was beautiful, what a perfect gift now she could drool over plants from every region, even in the somwhat boring slow season that they didn't have too many green things active as many of the other seasons which by contrast were pell mell. She was happy, everything in life was going smoothly. She asked her radaku if they would like to come with her to see Vhallas, they of course were always happy to go out.
She jogged toward the beast ranch but soon enough who should she meet on the road but her friend. She tilted her head he was carrying a bundle, she wondered for who it could be. Perhaps he had more friends than just her, he did have many family members perhaps it was for one of them?
"Oh I was just coming to meet you! Thank you for the gift, as it so happens I have one for you too!"

He held his 'present' close to his chest and hoped she couldn't see the wriggling.
"Oh? Well, you are half right, I am giving you a gift but its right here," He held out the wrapped package which gave a grunt. He coughed to cover it up. "I am not sure who gifted the first present." He shrugged but was eager to see what she thought of his actual gift.
"Awww, thank you!" They exchanged packages and he picked slowly at the edge of the wrapping, he was excited but he more so wanted to see her face when she opened her gift...before that gift opened itself. He bit his tongue, trying to concentrate on putting off his own opening.
"You go first, I can't wait to see what you think." Desperate times called for desperate measures. His gift felt heavy and solid and he thought maybe it was a book but a book on what? He nearly vibrated with excitement. It was that time of year but he loved it, he loved gift giving and especially well thought out gifts and he was sure this one would go over well. Who in their right mind wouldn't want their own baby janarim! It was impossible. He didn't have to wait long.

She took the package which was heavy and ...shuddered? "Oh my!" She giggled, realizing that it could only be a living thing. "Someone was very patient with being contained." Not wanting the creature to have to wait any longer she opened the package to reveal the most gorgeous janarim cub. "My gods, he is gorgeous!" She held him close to her chest holding him gently as he was a baby. When he got older she could squish hug him all she wanted. "What a little darling you are!"
"Oh thank you, thank you!" She hugged Vhallas with the arm not supporting the janarim. "I would never have guessed, what an awesome gift!" He had given her a vibrant living creature, a companion that like her radaku would be able to protect her no matter where she went. She had been curious about janarim after all, after meeting his mother's companion when the storm had made them stuck in place for a few days. "What a happy day! Go on then, open yours!" Her eyes sparkled with mischief.

Delightedly he opened the wrapping on his own gift. Indeed! It was a book. Oh and what a book it was! "Oh this is so cool! Someone went through a lot of trouble to gather all of this information and write it. He paused..."My Grandpa is a co author?! And my Great Uncle...woah, I didn't know either of them wrote!" He looked up at her wonderingly. "I bet you any money they wrote the sections on janarim and snaptrotter, we specialize in those the most. Great Uncle Thal with the snappers and Grandpa with the Janarim."
The argument could be made that as he looked a lot like his Mom, he looked a lot like Grandpa too. Though like Mom, grandpa had the Matorian spotty dotties, where Vhallas had gotten his father's deep dark crystals. His Mom said they reminded her of light through deeper parts of the sea. He was curious as to what she was doing in the deeper part of the sea to know that, she could hold her breath for an obnoxious amount of time so he figured she had just been free diving.
"Maybe a family member gave you the other present? What was it if you don't mind me asking."

She snapped her fingers after looking up at him from petting her new pet. "Oh it was a book on plants and if I apply your logic it was probably my Dad, we both love the garden and he is quite considerate." She smiled and opened the front of her book.
"Yup it was Dad, I missed the note initially because I was too excited." She grinned. "Ya know this is a good day, would you like to get some uh breakfast? You can check out your new book, I can check out mine and I can spoil my new familiar with snacks. He looks hungry." Hatchlings usually were. They would run around, eat and then nap. Usually in that cycle. She was doubly delighted as every time she saw her pet it would remind her of the friend who had given it too her. "He is just so cute!" She played with the large but small paws, she knew his feet would get much larger but having a mini janarim was just so charming, hard to believe one day she would be able to ride him just as she did her radaku familiars. "You are going to be so powerful," she said in a baby voice. "But right now you are powerfully cute."

He was greatly amused by her reactions. "Food sounds good to me! Just don't try and feed him leafy stuff, if he actually eats it it will give him gas." She was adorable, a far cry from the cranky girl he had been reaquainted with later. He was happy that she was relaxed around him. I guess three days in a cave eating travel fair with a janarim for company was the best ice breaker. In any case he was grateful for her friendship, truth be told she was the first one he had thought of to recieve a gift this giving season.
"Where would you like to eat?" He clutched his new book to hid chest as something incredibly precious; for its knowledge and because of who had given it to him. Truth be told, Hrafn had become his best friend. Which was good because Seathra hung out with Undine all the time and Vhallas got bored really easily on his own. His parents really should hurry up on the whole sibling thing, no one else in the family had compunctions, even his Mom had been a twin.

She was having a hard time concentrating on anything but her baby janarim for obvious reasons, he was still a bit bitey, playful but bitey. It made her giggle as the radaku pups she had raised had been very similar. "I'm good with most things just not one of those places that is all veggie, I find that a bit well...boring." She worked hard and needed the extra energy that meat in any form could provide. "I'm not a big fan of cooked fish but raw is okay." She tapped her chin. "Nothing too cold either, food should be warm, other than that I'm open to suggestions."
She busied herself attending to the small critter, thoughtfully Vhallas had provided a leash and collar, babies this young were still a little wild. And this was definitely a fine bred, spirited wild child. "If you are going to be all wriggly Mr baby you can get down and walk for a bit. She affixed the collar and leash and put the large footed cub down. "There, now I can consentrate just a bit better, though I see he does not like the leash too bad until I can get you home." Her smile lit up her whole face. Her parents wouldn't mind they let her and her brother have the radaku after all and she was old enough to have her own pets.

"He will calm down significantly with age but for the moment expect a small tornado hellion, that grows alarmingly fast with alarmingly big teeth. But one day he will be very loyal and very trustworthy." He put his arm behind his neck to rub. "As for food, well, lets walk until we find something we want." He most often was spontaneous with everything but training be that an animal or his own training.
"I am excited to dig into the book for sure! There will be so many critters that I haven't seen from Yael or Belrea and Kahikinia. I have a strange urge to visit there one day that is for sure, so many different cultures to see and experience. Maybe Mom will charter us a ride on her ship. I know you like the sea would you care to come?"
He felt like he was going out on a limb and also not, it was a weird juxtaposition. He knew it likely that she would want to come, that she had done some adventuring to interesting places already but he wasn't sure where that had been.

In the end they decided on a kebab place that smelled the best out of everything they had walked by. "Of course I will come, I would just need to let my family know when and for about how long I would be gone." Travel on their own semi private ship would be delightful and she would get to meet his family not just him. Though him was good enough for her.
"I'm sure Poison and Buck would love to come too." They ordered their food and sipped fancy fruit juice with fruit decorations all over them. "This is decadent for a kebab place is it not." She flicked the pineapple slice affixed to her glass.
It was good juice though and her eyes got huge when the food came out. Sauteed then grilled vegetables, a nice rice pilaff and the meat kebabs that came still on their sticks with tomatoes strewn about like red baubles. "This looks really good though its a big man sized serving, hope you brought your apetite I might have to take a doggy bag home." In fact it was more than likely she had a good apetite but not one that could eat a whole quhar in a sitting.

He wasted no time in digging in. Both of them fed unseasoned tidbits to the baby janarim who waited patiently under the table for the required attention. Hard to believe that one day he would be bigger than the table and them put together.
"I happen to have his twin, they came out of the same egg, she has a very similar pattern to him. Hopefully we will have a nice matching pair when they grow up." The thought amused him. "Its rare to have twins, and that is why he is just a tad small for his age. As I had the parent though I got first dibs. Its not like the ranch doesn't have a thriving janarim population." He could talk about critters for days. They would always be a big part of his life but he was torn between two paths. For a while he thought he wanted to be a potter but as he got older he craved a bit more adventure and a bit more interaction than being tied to a pottery wheel as studio. He would still study pottery under his Great Aunt but well there were other things out there like animals and the sea which held his attention better.

The food was deliscious and they both had a good time. They read some of their books after the food was taken and they chatted up a storm. It was fun hanging out with him when they were not forcibly stuck in a cave together. 'We should do this again sometime, I like short hikes to fun places and I love swimming, though I am not allowed to do it as much by myself yet but if I had a friend to go with...I also want to learn to surf. Nothing brings me more joy than being at the sea."
She hoped that he would agree to learn with her or at least to go for good swims and snorkels. She loved watching all the pretty fishies and how surfers seemed to have master the waves. It was a different world than that behind her garden gate but she wanted to build the skills she wasn't so good at and she was already very very good at gardening. "I had better get home, I'm late for weeding day and us kids help out with that as it is a rather big garden Dad has but it feeds us and fills the coin pouches. Plus it doesn't feel like work unless it is really really hot out."

"Perfect, I need a swimming buddy too. Weeding does sound like a big job when I think about how big your yard is. We have quite a small garden by comparison." He was full now too and eager to get home and dive better into this book. His parents were out on an adventure so he wondered which relative would be on watch for him when he got home. This morning it had been Thallassa but he thought it might have switched to Grandpa by this evening, he loved hanging out with grandpa who's hair had been changed to that of his mate and thus his daughter and thus his by the great blooming Aishan trees. His mom said she missed the old blue but now they were all matchy matchy which Vhallas really liked.
"We will definitely do this again some time soon, keep me appraised of your new scale babies progress maybe we can take yours and mine for walkies soon. We would be quite the sight together with a matching pair of critters. I can't wait to be able to ride them when they are bigger. Janarim are good for long distance travel." They said goodbye and parted ways.
