Kaðlín hadn't expected Hy-Brasil's plan to be successful. It wasn't a malicious expectation – she hadn't assumed failure – but she never thought about success. She never went through the what-ifs of 'what happens after we catch a Negaverse agent?' It simply hadn't occurred to her to think ahead. As if the first step was the only step in the plan.

Now Hy-Brasil had this boy stashed away, this boy who was part of the Negaverse and part of a dance class and a part-time model. She'd seen him only long enough to help put him away, and while she expected to go back and question him, she couldn't decide what to say. She didn't know which questions she should ask and which ones she shouldn't. She didn't know what the etiquette was. She had no experience in such forays into war, even though she knew of POWs from history class.

The world was cruel. It was only natural that it expected cruelty out of her in an act of war.

Kaðlín knew she needed advice. This was not a dilemma that solved itself after sleeping on it, or one that was easily tackled despite her inexperience. For all she knew, the Negaverse, could have entire protocols on how to condition their soldiers against any kind of persuasion. Or, they could be just as disorganized as Order felt at times. Maybe she was exaggerating all of this as she dwelt on it, and the simple fact was, Hy-Brasil and her were now the keepers of a young man who was just as informed as they were. But that was wishful thinking – one did not reach Eternal rank while knowing nothing, she imagined.

She let her thumb linger over the 'call' icon while she had Brielle's number up on her phone. Finally, she pressed it, and the sound of a ringing phone was routed to her earbuds. She waited, counting the seconds until the line was answered.

"I need a favor," she began. "I'm out of my element on something. Can you come over?"

It was strange to see Kaðlín’s name pop up on the screen of her cell phone. It shouldn’t have been. She was a Cybele knight, of course, and she’d started to be something of a casual friend on top of that. When Brielle had told her to call her if she’d needed anything, she’d meant it.

It was just that for once her mind had been more focused on the things and people outside of the war than the people in it. She’d gotten a theater gig that was not a quick workshop here or helping out with a children’s production there, which was most of what her work had been since the disappearances had made her hard to hire. Someone had taken a chance on her, though, and now she was ensemble in West Side Story, and it turned out that being in a show made it hard to focus on much else. She wasn’t sure how she’d managed both this and fighting in her old forgotten life.

Still, she picked up the phone from the kitchen counter before it could ring twice. Kaðlín was asking her to come over, and in a fluid motion, Brielle turned from the kitchen to walk over to the closet and pop the door open, reaching to her coat. “Of course,” she said. “I’m coming. I think it will be about ten minutes, unless traffic is awful.”

She knew the other woman well enough to know that she was good at keeping a cool head, but not quite well enough to read in between the lines of her nonchalant tones. She stopped by the front door, grabbed her keys, and stepped into a pair of faux-fleece lined booties. “What’s going on?” Did she need advice, or was someone dead?

Brielle picked up quickly. She crossed her legs as she sat in an old recliner that clearly endured the traumas of a toddler. With her foot anchored on the ground, she gently rocked herself back and forth while she thought about how to phrase her answer to Brielle's question.

She wasn't used to code. It had not occurred to her to ask about how much is safe to divulge over a cell phone. She was used to being direct, though.

"Take your time," she reassured. "I just…" She paused, and a soft hum was audible over the phone. "An opportunity came up unexpectedly. You've been doing this a lot longer than I have, so I wanted your advice. It's hard to explain, so I'll fill you in once you're here. See you soon."

While she felt nervous, for the situation was so strange and fresh to her, she reminded herself that Cybele would likely not judge her for the situation. It wasn't her plan, it wasn't of her making. She was pulled in to help, and while that did not excuse her of all culpability, it might contextualize some of her inevitable missteps.

When she hung up, Kaðlín felt restless. She stood, paced into her kitchen, checked the cupboards for any signs of hospitality. An old, expired tin of coffee lay buried at the very back of the cupboard behind an assortment of spices and baking ingredients. It didn't surprise her. Stepping away, she grabbed her keys off the counter and elected to make a quick trip to the coffee shop a couple doors down from her apartment. She'd be back with a minute or so to spare before Brielle arrived, she estimated. And it would brighten up the place a little.

Hard to explain. Brielle knew code well enough. She knew that they had to cover their tracks, that asking to talk about something in person was often the only way to bring things up when it had to do with magic, and the war. Hearing that it was an opportunity was something of a relief. At least that most likely meant that nobody important was dead. Such things were always a possibility. Brielle had seen far too many horrors not to be afraid that there was always another one right around the corner.

There was little more to say for the moment, though, other than to say, “All right. I’ll be there,” and then to click off the call.

Then she got into the car. Brielle didn’t often drive, but it seemed worth it for the extra speed over trying to deal with other kinds of transport. It did mean that she had to think about the road, though, and the traffic lights, and the driver that swerved in front of her. She took a second to breathe as she pulled into a parking spot next to Kaðlín’s apartment.

Then she pulled her peacoat over her blouse, stepped out of the car, and made her way over. Heading up now, she texted, as she walked up the stairs to the apartment.

Kaðlín was ready by the time she got the text. She'd just made it in with two hot cups of coffee in hand. Setting one aside on the kitchen counter, she padded over to the front door and waited until she heard footfalls on the porch. Once she heard the old boards start to creak, Kaðlín opened the door for her company.

And there she was. Kaðlín tried to smile. "Thanks for coming. I brought you some coffee." She held the paper cup out from the bottom so Brielle could receive it by its insulating sleeve.

"I hope you don't mind. I needed something to wake myself up; I didn't sleep well last night." She waved her friend inside, then shut the door and locked the deadbolt. She doubted anyone followed Brielle, but some part of her was unable to let go of her anxieties after the other night. It might've been well-reasoned caution, it might've been misplaced anxiety.

Turning, Kaðlín retrieved her own cup from the counter. "There's milk in the fridge and sugar and honey in that cupboard if you need it." She pointed to the one nearest the fridge. Opening hers up, she added quite a bit of milk to brighten it up.

Then she replaced the lid with a small sigh. "I met a Knight — Hy-Brasil — when her Wonder was in trouble a while back. I ran into her again recently, and she had me help her out with…" She wasn't sure how to say it. "Kidnapping someone? Can you say that for adults?

"Anyway," she crossed the short distance to her usual living room chair and sat down with her drink. "She said she found out that the man was a Negaverse senshi. We got him while he was powered down. I'm not sure how long she plans to hold him or what she'll do with him, so I was wondering if I should see if he knows anything about my best friend.

"What do you think? Any advice?" She finished, sipping her coffee afterward.

“Coffee can help in almost every situation,” said Brielle, slipping easily through the door with her own practiced smile. It wasn’t hard to be polite when her hostess was being so thoughtful. “And this one smells amazing.” She followed her friend over to the counter, giving them both a few seconds to settle into the moment before they got down to brass tacks. She didn’t add as much milk as Kaðlín, only enough to take the sharpest of the bitterness off.

As she perched on the edge of a chair across from Kaðlín, she took the first sip. It was a good cup of coffee, but not quite good enough to keep the concern from showing on her face as she heard exactly what was going on. She took a breath and then another drink, making sure her expression was even before she said anything. Kaðlín was mourning and looking for answers. Brielle understood that. Her gut reaction of panic wasn’t going to do much good here.

By the same token, she didn’t want the others to be careless.

“I don’t take prisoners, as a rule,” she said. “Not long after I purified, the people who took me in tried something like that. Had a General for a few weeks, I believe?” She swallowed hard, but put the coffee down so that she could look straight at the other woman. “Until the Negaverse sent in a rescue attempt. Killed one of them.” Her lips pressed thin. “Took another one captive, in turn. And the General survived.” She folded her hands on her knee. “So, that’s my warning, and if you would like my honest advice, it’s going to come out of that scenario.”

Even now, the thought of the risk made her heart beat faster.

“But, anyway, did you ask him? Is he talking?”

Kaðlín remained silent while Brielle spoke. While she didn't make any assumptions about what she would hear, the first words surprised her. But, as Brielle went on with her explanation, the decision made a lot of sense. While it was just one example, it showed that the Negaverse had the capacity to value its own officers. It showed that they were organized enough to take one of their own back, alive, and kill one of the people involved. That was important for contextualizing how she and Hy should move forward with the one they had.

They might be working off of borrowed time, even if they had gone through and gotten rid of Aelius's cell phone. Even if no one spotted them when they first took him. She didn't know the extent of the Negaverse's surveillance capabilities, and it was likely that few on their side knew, either. Kaðlín needed to get her information as soon as possible, then. Hy-Brasil could do with him as she wanted afterward.

Nodding, Kaðlín sipped her coffee and crossed her legs. One socked foot bobbed without rhythm.

"It sounds like I have a very limited time to get my answers." It would have been helpful if they could gauge how long that was. "I'd still like your advice. Particularly if you know of some way to get them to open up.

"I haven't tried talking to him yet. He was still out cold when we put him up, so I went home to gather my thoughts. I want to give him a fair chance to respond, but I need to figure out how I can get some answers from him if he's unwilling to talk." Perhaps Brielle had learned a thing or two about that.

Brielle's face was carefully controlled, almost grim, even with the smell of coffee to cheer the situation up a bit. "I won't tell you what to do," she said, and she wouldn't, "But if you're determined to help with this hostage situation, please be careful. Not just with the captive. Watch your back."

She went silent for a long second, and very still. Glancing down, she could see her reflection in the surface of her drink. She didn't move to take another sip. Instead, she thought of her father's funeral. She thought of the emptiness that haunted Ganymede's eyes after everything, even now. In some ways, the person who had offered her hope and softness in her darkest moments was gone now.

Kaðlín wasn't particularly young, or particularly reckless. Brielle trusted her to be careful to the best of her abilities. It was just that there were things that people didn't understand about the reality of war until they'd been involved for as long as she had, so long that it stretched into a life that she couldn't even remember.

"I think there are a few other Cybele knights now," she said, quieter. "But out of all of them, you're the one who's made the point of speaking with me the most about things." The cup in her hands began to shake, the smooth surface of the water rippling. "I don't think I could take it right now if something were to happen."

She looked back up, took half a breath.

"But I'll know you'll do what you can." And it would likely be overbearing to say more. People could already take her words so seriously sometimes, now that she held the title of Princess.

"As far as what to say," she squinted, trying to think of something helpful to say but not coming up with much at first. Torture wasn't always that effective. She knew that from the time she'd lost part of her feet.

There had been something else then, though. That device Faustite had worn. Not that that thing, in particularly, would do them any good, but maybe there were other options.

"Magic would be the ideal, if you could get something worked out. It's possible there's someone around who has a truth spell. If you had more time I'd say the Mauvians could work on something for you."

But that would get into dangerous territory.

"Otherwise, just ask, I suppose. You might not get anything, but it's worth trying."

She couldn't help the small smile that came across her countenance for the confirmation that Cybele had more knights now. Maybe Kaðlín had been one of the first, but she was gladdened to know they were expanding, and someday, they might be able to band together for a common cause with their Princess. She kept such a hope close to her chest, however; it was too soon to express such a thing when she knew nothing about the other knights.

She nodded solemnly to the advice. Cybele was right — Magic was what they had over the Negaverse. If someone had the kind of magic that might compel an answer from someone, she would prefer that most of all. Because what were the alternatives?

She could ask, and offer a positive reward for answering, but without a way to verify the information received, Drayson could just as well lie about it and enjoy the fruits of that treachery. And in the opposite scenario, if she hit him or hurt him for denying or refusing to answer, then he could lie yet again. She and Hy had no way of confirming what he knew. So, whatever route she took, it didn't matter. It was low-grade information at best. And even if that information never personally incriminated Drayson, she would still need to find a way to corroborate it. And they wouldn't be taking another hostage for that.

She also didn't have a way of networking with other knights or senshi. Apart from giving out her personal cell, she couldn't reach out to new people — or even old ones — as Celadon. That limited the scope of their search for someone with special magics.

"I'll just keep it general. Give him some reasons to answer me. And even if the information is bunk, I'll have something to corroborate if I can find another source. Or someone who can use truth magic." It was a wanting conclusion, but probably the best she could do given the circumstances.

"Thank you. I don't know what plans Hy has, but I think this will be a learning experience for both of us." And she might well learn why Cybele never took hostages as a rule.

General information was the best you were going to get from a hostage, Brielle thought. Particularly if the hostage was whoever you could get your hands on, and not someone high ranking or important.

She'd been called over here like she might have some answers, but for a long time, Brielle found herself with no words. She didn't say that Kaðlín's quest for closure, was hopeless, even though it likely was. How many people did the Negaverse kill in Destiny City every week?

There was no record of it, as far as Brielle was aware. She thought back to the starseeds she'd taken, to how she'd left the nameless corpses in the alleyways. Sometimes, she hadn't even looked at their faces beforehand.

Back then, those dozens of deaths had felt like nothing. Now, the lack of just one person filled the whole room. Brielle pressed her lips together as a darker thought crossed her mind.

Was I the one who did this?

There was no way to know.

"If this is the road you're taking, I hope you learn what you need to from it," she said instead, taking a drink for some sense of looking normal.

"Me too," Kaðlín agreed solemnly. "I only need enough to know where to go next. I can't see something like this becoming a regular activity for me. Depriving someone of their freedom and choice feels like I'm doing to them what they did to Eileen. And even if Drayson was the one responsible…"

If he was the one responsible, then could she kill him? Would it make a difference? Or was there something else she'd have in mind?

Kaðlín knew that, even if she did kill him, it wouldn't bring justice for Eileen. It wouldn't undo the wreckage left behind, nor bring her back to life, nor reunite Eileen with her daughter. It might prevent a few more missing persons from papering the telephone poles and sides of buildings, but it might just recreate her situation for someone else. She knew what he sounded like when he was walking in the park last night. Someone else was likely waiting for him, worrying about him. If he died, wouldn't that someone be looking for her? And when they find her, would her answers much differ from Eileen's killer?

If the Negaverse's goals were to sow death and misery, then by repeating this same scheme, she would be complicit in that. As a lone knight, she couldn't hope to overcome them, either.

With a sigh, she pushed such thoughts away. She had yet to even talk to the hostage. Reaching for her mug, Kaðlín took a sip.

"…I don't know." She hoped Hy-Brasil had a plan.

"You seem to be thinking clearly about it at least," said Brielle, steadily, like she was thinking normally about this. She said it like she had authority to be a mentor, and not like she had created so many situations like this with her own two hands.

She took a deep breath. The coffee was almost gone.

Kaðlín was trying to talk about morality now. She was trying to talk about being better than the Negaverse. How did Brielle explain that this wasn't about morality to her? How did she say that she say that she hadn't purified to be a good person without making it very clear to this person who invited her over for advice that she was still something of a monster?

She'd had empathy come back to her in fits and starts with the Chaos gone, but she found that it didn't exactly tug at her heartstrings to hear that this agent was suffering. It wasn't her style, but it didn't bother her.

"There's a lot of thinking to do, about these kinds of things," she decided to say in the end. "And some of my thinking was influenced for a time. I came out of it with blood on my hands." She paused. "I'm saying, if you change your mind and want to kill him, I can do it."

She wouldn't ask that of someone else.

She drained the coffee. "Either way, let me know how it goes, all right? I can't stay too much later now, but I'll be around."

Kaðlín nodded at the offer. It was war, after all. People died. They died for ideals, they died for strategy, they died because they were on the wrong side. They died because of their own fear. They died for nothing, too.

She knew better than to think she knew much about war. Surely she'd only been a part of this one for a short time. She'd never participated in any other kind of war, and had only heard stories about the conflicts and world wars that the Earth had faced over the history of humanity. She knew she wasn't hardened. And she knew that, if it did come down to killing the boy they held in captivity, she wouldn't be able to do it. Not now. And she didn't know how Hy-Brasil felt about it, either.

So that offer would protect them, for better or worse.

"I will," she volunteered at last. "And I appreciate you taking the time to come over. It means a lot." She stood, then, and set her coffee aside on the end table nearest her, where it sat atop a stack of dusty magazines.

"Keep an eye on your phone. If I don't tell you about it here, then we'll try somewhere more relaxing," she finished, her gaze drawing up toward the ceiling in brief.

"Be safe getting home."
