Quote: Backdated to December 10th The shop was slow today and with that free time, Luciana rolled out a fresh piece of schematic paper. Thinking of the large clock face that had been on the floor in Spasskaya, she sketched up what she thought might be the underlying mechanisms. Her notes weren’t in English, just in case someone walked in. She would need to figure out the rest as she went, and she would have to meet up with Aaru again to learn how to fight a bit more. Keeping an eye on the door, she knew that Kinsey might show up, they’d popped over a few times and she was getting used to the boy. At least they were smart enough not to test her patience and always had questions that avoided being repetitive and stupid. But she couldn’t let him know about this or what that new ring she’d started wearing really was. It looked different when she wasn’t in uniform and she preferred its disguised appearance. It had a level of antique beauty to it.

School had been going on as usual, nothing out of the ordinary, but he’d been getting help from Luciana on his castle project. It was a lot of work, a challenge, but having her help made things easier and even more enjoyable. It was a passion project for him, a challenge and a test of his skills, but it was enjoyable - it had to be. If he didn’t enjoy it he wouldn’t keep at it for so long, But the added help was making it more enjoyable, something he had not entirely predicted, he didn’t like socializing and had figured this whole thing would be a learning experience and strictly that…which it mostly was.
Classes today had been good, easy enough, and he’d rushed out of the building in order to check in with Luciana and see what she was working on and if he could help her with anything. He was also hoping she might have some lessons for him on how to accomplish what he wanted with the castle, because he did want to finish it at some point. He wasn’t seeking to rush it, he was learning more than just what would apply to this project, but he did want to finish it at some point.
While heading towards the shop he did wonder what she might show him today, something he’d find interesting no doubt, and turning the handle to the shop door he stepped inside finally.

Hearing the bell ring as the door opened, she rolled up her schematic and slid it beneath the workbench into one of the drawers. Rifling around for a moment as she heard someone walking in, she set one of her orders back up on the table and pulled out a notebook with the particulars of what needed to be done. It was a simple enough order, replace a few parts and make sure it worked again.
The sad-looking clock had seen better days, its glass was cracked and from what she was told, it had lost a few gears and springs over the course of a few moves. At least it was one that had been produced enough to have a repair guide, one that she had already printed and had tucked into her notebook so she could get to making the parts.
“Good timing, I have to make some things here today that might be of interest for you.” Finally looking up as Kinsley made it to the main part of her shop. They’d come directly from class again, something she’d noticed more than once at this point. As long as it didn’t get in the way of her work, or that he forgot things here, she didn’t mind too much.

“Oh!” Yes, he sounded excited at her words. The idea of her having to make parts, and being able to watch it, was exciting and had his pale eyes lighting up at the prospect of watching. He’d get to see the machines, and other tools, used but also what went into it all. From how to measure things out to the tooling and then finishing them.
“I’d like to see this very much.” He was glad he was arriving now, good timing for him, he would get to learn a bit more and while he couldn’t be hands on with things it was fine. He’d still be learning more than he would have otherwise. “What needs to be done?” Asking this as he found a place to set his school bag, as he went to approach the counter so he could look over things. He wanted to see what needed to be worked on, not just the watch but rather what was wrong with it - so he knew what they were fixing and could see how it was done then.
“Can you explain, as you work, what parts inside of the watch do?” He questioned easily, his voice light and soft though not shy.

“Since it’s a wall clock, more of the parts are normally hidden behind the face but with the glass broken, you can see some of them. “ Pulling her light down so they both had a better view, she opened it up and laid things out next to the guide she had found. Already she’d gone and marked the things missing and what needed to be fixed.
“One of the main gears was missing as well as the spring that keeps the hands from dragging on the face of the clock. The pendulum seemed to be missing some of its pieces as well but those were more to make it look pretty than making it work.” She then pulled it out carefully and set it down, slowly taking it apart piece by piece as she took note of things and double-checked what needed to be done.
“Not something broken but something I plan to work on is the mount to hang it on the wall. The original divet is worn down to the point it seems to fall off the nail or screw that would hold it up. I would guess that’s how the glass broke.” There was also a bit of a rounded corner on one of the wooden edges which she had assumed was where it made contact with the ground.

“The spring - do you make those or just purchase them?” He couldn’t imagine making one, it seemed harder than a gear to be honest, but if she made them he’d want to see how that was done. The gears he knew she’d be making, she’d already told him she made those, so he’d get to see that. Watching what she did he took note of what she was removing, where it went and what it seemed to do, as he asked questions here and there.
“That would be a good idea, it would be a shame for it to fall again after the work you’re going to put into it. Even if it were brought back and would be more business for you. It would look poorly on you if it broke again, even if it is the owners fault and it were to fall.” He spoke, thinking about her reputation and how things might look poorly for her, and the shop, and what a shame it would be.
“I wasn’t aware it was springs used to keep the hands from the face of the clock. I always thought it was just a long stem that the hands topped. I’m glad to find out the truth.” In fact he was glad to learn everything he was learning, and everything he would learn, from her. “The main gear, what’s it do and where would it normally be? If you don’t mind.”

“I can make them, it’s not terribly hard to be honest.” It was one of the easier things given it was handled almost completely by a machine she had then she could cut it to the proper length for tension purposes. It was fun in a way as well, especially when her cat growing up would paw at the ones that had rolled off the workshop table.
Nodding with a slight smile, she liked the way he thought. It was true and something she thought about when doing her work. “True though there are things that people know wear over time that wouldn’t be seen as something I messed up. They’ll have to come in if they want to get it revarnished eventually since that dulls and yellows over time.” Even now she knew the wood was more cherry colored than it looked on the outside where it had a yellowish-brown tint to it, something more apparent on the edges where the glass had once been.
“It’s a backup on clocks that have more moving parts or decorations and the Main gear is hidden behind the face and a few other gears.” Pointing to a worn gear that was missing more than a few of its teeth. “This one has seen better days and since I have it I can use it to help make a new one. Some I can resurface and finish from the old parts but this one looks like it’s been through that a few times.” Pulling it out and turning it in the light, she showed them how it had marks on the back of it from where it had been thinned on a grinder and repaired once before.

“You should offer to restain the wood, when they pick it up, so they can decide on it later and return. I doubt that once the idea is in their mind they won’t, eventually, come back and ask to have the clock seen by you about its coloring.” Which meant another service and being able to charge them again, it also meant the clock would look nice and people visiting would ask and the client no doubt would tell people who had made it look so nice and work once again.
“And mention fixing it so it’ll hang nicely, and won’t fall, as something you took note of and decided to fix - so they wouldn’t need to visit again for repairs.” It would seem nice, like she wasn’t looking to turn them into a repeat customer who needed her, while also planting a seed in their head which would bring them back. It would, he figured, help her gain a repeat customer without ever letting the customer think she’d influenced them…or at least minimally influenced them.
Looking over the gear, as she showed it under the light, he nodded his head. He could see the wear on the gear. “So you can measure this one in order to make the new one. This one can be retired then…do they melt gears down for metal to make new ones or just throw them away?” Why not, if possible, find a purpose for gears no longer being used? He was certain there was some small way to make something of the parts, if they weren’t to be melted down and recast into more gears.
“I like the idea of seeing some of the moving parts, from the outside.” A skeleton complication, that’s what he was referring to without knowing that’s what he meant. He liked to see gears and moving parts - inner workings.

“I usually do that when I contact them for updates since sometimes things come up and I need to ask if they want something salvaged or replaced depending on things. It’s part of the process for older antiques, some people want all original parts while others want it fixed and fitted with newer and longer lasting parts.” This was the case for this order considering they wanted it to run. Tapping the edge of the worn-toothed gear, she half wondered if this kid’s father was a businessman with how they were talking.
“Melt, re-tooth, repurpose for something unrelated, there’s always a use for metal. I have a few canisters of gear just in case. It's probably how your grandmother has a tin of buttons instead of cookies.” It was common enough in most places so she figured that was the case here as well and she started working on the updated sketch of things on a fresh sheet of paper next to the clock and its manual.
“I like that too but most people don’t want to see it, this clock will have the face hiding things and then once the new glass is installed it will be ready to hang back up in their kitchen." She figured that’s where it had been considering the fact it had the slightest feeling of oil on it when she’d first cleaned it on arrival to her shop.

"I think, if it were me, I'd go for the longer lasting parts but I'd want them done in whatever manner is most hands on and artisan. Less technology. Much as a like technology I think some things should remain artisinal as a nod to the history of the craft." Another reason he wanted to use this manner of handling timing and movement for his castle. It was how other things once operated, including wind up toys and music boxes and other things. It was the harder route, and took mroe time, it was a new skillset to posess but also it showed care and respect to a certain craft.
Looking over to her rather swiftly, his attention moving from the clock to her. "I wouldn't know about my grandparents." The words were spoken quickly, honestly, with nothing extra added to it - a simple statement. His mothers parents were dead, and she'd been an only child, and his fathers parents had been poisioned against him. He didn't see anyone on his fathers side and there was no one, to his knowledge, on his mothers side remaining. As far as Kinsey figured it he was alone, it certainly felt like it most of the time, and he didn't mind it...so long as they actually left him alone.
His attention had, as quickly as it had turned to her, turned back to what she was working on. He wished he had contact with his grandparents, anyone really, but his father and his wife made him out to be the bad guy in the family. Someone who couldn't come to holiday events because he was in trouble again, had done something wrong, or that he simply didn't want to come because he didn't care. As much as he didn't like people, and he really didn't, he wouldn't have said no to spending time with family. He'd never been given the choice though. They simply hadn't wanted him near his family any more and no one had ever asked about him, at least he assumed as much, they just believed what his father and steo mother said...and who could fault them for it? Who would think a father would make up such stories abotu his own child?
"I don't know why most people wouldn't want to see the working gears and how they move, how they affect the other parts around them in order to create one whole working unit. It's pretty in a way." He spoke lightly, with the same honestly as earlier. If he ever got himself a watch, maybe once he was out of his fathers home and on his own, he'd make sure it showed the inner workings as much as possible.
