Sounds of the Season (9) : Seasonal songs play constantly this time of the year, and between old classics and new hits, there’s always something for everyone on the quest for Holiday cheer. One song, more than all the rest, is hitting hard. It’s catchy and festive and even though you’ve heard it a hundred times, it’s still exciting whenever it comes on again. Something about this song fills you with such joy and merriment that it’s almost impossible to resist the urge to spontaneously dance or sing along with it. There’s something magical about it; it’s an instant mood lifter and can make even the chilliest winter days feel a little warmer.

The radio was on, filling the kitchen with holiday tunes. Dawn hummed along as she scrubbed the pots and pans that were stacked up. She wasn’t the only one either. One of the cooks who was prepping for the next day was also enjoying the music, most everyone else was either too busy or wasn’t paying attention. It made sense really, they had really big days coming up at the shelter she was currently volunteering at. The holidays were hectic. So many more people came in. Trying to get out of the cold, looking for a little warmth, or some hot food. More donations also came in, all of that needed to be tracked and logged and everything. So Dawn understood why no one else seemed to feel the joy that was filling the air, especially when one of the many holiday songs came back on.

She really didn’t know who sang it, or what it was called. Nor did she have the time to look it up. All she knew was every time it came drifting over the radio Dawn just wanted to sing. She wanted to belt out the tune along with the musician. Wanted to dance along with the rhythm. Wanted to rock out like no one was looking. Sadly it was rather hard for her to do so, what with her being elbow deep in soapy water.

It didn’t stop her really. She still hummed along, occasionally singing under her breath. The sounds of the kitchen drowned her out, and no one was paying her any mind anyway. It wasn’t until Dawn let out a rather long, and loud, rendition of the song’s chorus the next time it was playing, that anyone noticed. It didn’t help that it occurred while there was a lull in the work and soon there was a discreet cough that had the short strawberry blonde glancing over.

The ‘head chef’, though really he was just the guy who had been there the longest, was standing there with a bemused look on his face.

“Yes?” Dawn tilted her head, looking over at him, and asked quizzically, even as she continued to work.

“You must really like that song,” He put down the pan he had been holding with the rest of the dirty dishes. “This is like the fourth time you’ve sung along to that song. What’s it called anyway?”

“Oh, it's just so catchy and festive and it's great to sing along with.” The woman smiled up at him, she had to smile up at most people since she was rather petit. “It makes me grin, and just fills me with happiness. Who wouldn’t want to sing along? Holiday songs can be like that! I love it when they are. It just makes even the most tedious tasks bearable or the coldest days just a bit warmer. Don’t you think so?”

“I, uh,” The guy absently shrugged and muttered an agreement. He had no idea how to handle the bubbly woman. She wasn’t like the typical ‘volun-tolds’ that showed up. She really was just that damn nice. “I’ll have to take your word for it,” He smiled weakly before heading back to finish up cooking. Dawn just shrugged and went back to her task at hand, a grin still wide on her face.
