Prompt: Bonnie is normally the strong one, she's never nervous. So why is Stefano seeing her breaking down? Can he break down her walls before she crumbles completely?

Calling it a long day was an understatement. Of course everyone had bad days. That was just perfectly normal. Perfectly human. Bonnie's superpower was never letting those bad days show in her demeanor. She might fake it and turn on the fake waterworks. But it was all a part of the show. The illusion of her perfectly crafted victim hood. Specifically that Mirabella was some be bad meanie or something juvenile like that. It was what she had always done to cope. What she had always needed to do just to get through each day.
Only today it had started with one little lock of hair not wanting to stay in place. No matter how hard she fought it, the little hair bounced up unwanted from where it belonged. Then there was the way that she hadn't gotten to eat one dessert today. Either the last one was taken or they would run out of time before she needed to get to class or, well, frankly she had ended up skipping dinner. Then there were classes, all having gone wrong in one way or another between her pencil constantly breaking or the dark haired girl with honking tits sitting next to her snoring just loud enough to be distracting but not loud enough to get kicked out of class. The letter from home had really just been the cherry on top.
It had started when she was young after all. Being the fourth of six was always hard. Even worse, really, when you didn't quite fit in. It wasn't that her parents didn't love her either. She knew they did. Hours of hard work and education combined with a household of freely offered affection whenever anyone needed it? She was truly blessed by the gods to have a family that loved her so much. But there were still six of them and only two parents. How could Bonnie be upset that one of them got sidelined? Even if she was the one who had been sidelined, it wasn't like she couldn't understand.
Ashlynn had always slotted in so seamlessly to her place. Even when she was young she knew she was beautiful, tall with impossibly dark skin clashing with red hair and eyes? It was like she was crafted from the early morning waves when the water looked more like fire. Men tripped over themselves when they saw her, and suitors had been sending in their invitations since her older sister had turned fourteen. Everyone wanted her attention, and she easily made people feel lucky for receiving it when she spoke to them.
On the other side of the coin, Jasper was the perfect son. He had excelled in the political teachings their father had imparted to him. Really it was like releasing a koi into a pond and watching it flourish. With a mind that attuned to the business side of things Pequeno Lago had been doing far better than any projections had expect with the diminished imports of cotton and silk. Not only that, but he had managed to find the time during all of it to serve in the war for a short stint only to return home and find a wife. Katelynn was so lovely too, filling in her role of maintaining the money of their duchy like she was born to do it. Though the thing she was truly the best at was being a mother. Bonnie was like one hundred percent sure that Alicia was the cutest niece on the planet.
Then there was António. He was the one who tried to relate to Bonnie the most, yet he had always been leagues ahead of her. It was like looking at a man that was maybe normally considered extremely attractive but also ew, gross, gag. Other girls though? He always seemed to have someone mooning over him, yet he spent more of his time being the perfect soldier. So much so that even with the end of the war he actively chose to stay in the Stilicidian military. And he was a damn good soldier. She could only wish she was half as good as he was. Yet the older they got the more she could tell that Tony had always expected her interest in fighting to be a phase that she just wasn't growing out of like she should.
Which left the twins. John and... Tessa. Sucking in a deep breath, Bonnie needed to move. It didn't matter to her much that it was late. Or that she had been ready for bed. Throwing an oversized cardigan over her pajamas and stuffing the piece of paper she'd been nursing like a drink for the last several hours, she slipped out of her room. Then she slipped down the hall, nearly sprinting down the stairs in an effort to get outside. The light burn in her lungs was all she could cling onto as she was attempting to outrun the guilt that clung to her. She didn't stop until she was out in the gardens, sitting on the ledge of a fountain that was lit up by little floating baubles she was sure were from Alore.
Jealousy was eating a pit into her stomach. Guilt settling into the holes that were left behind. It had been good news. Bonnie was so proud of her little sister. But it was just another thing that she had failed at where they excelled. She wasn't as charming or smart or strong as any of them. That had been proven during her time in the military, hadn't it?
Sure Bonnie had gotten in on her own merit. She was decent. If Mirabella was to be believed, she was actually better than good. But then, she also wasn't sure how much trust she should be putting in the other woman. Gods knew she would absolutely build Bonnie up to be more than she really was just to feel like someone was worthy of being her rival. Yet there were no medals on Bonnie's impeccably tailored uniform. No service ribbons or badges of honor. It was as if she had given everything she could to her country and the only repayment she had been given was a pat on the back and being told to go back to her family, find a husband, and pump out more citizens.
Yet there was John and Tessa.
Little geniuses that worked better together than apart. Really, if everyone was honest, Tessa was the brains of the operation. The girl was a genius in her own right, having been able to calculate math equations in her head from a young age. She remembered watching Tessa develop the silliest little inventions to help coral growth around the island when she learned that coral was in danger of bleaching in their part of Stilicidium. A little genius with a big heart. That was Tessa Smith.
For the longest time, Bonnie had assumed that Tessa would be like her. Too trapped by the circumstances of her birth to succeed in this life. How incredibly wrong Bonnie had been. Apparently being smart was far more impressive that being talented with languages or swordplay. Fishing into the pocket to retrieve the letter, she unfolded it to reread it again.
Dearest BonBon,
Am I still allowed to call you that now that I'm eighteen and you're on a big important mission for peace? Or does that even matter anyway? You still let me call you BonBon when you were in the military, so I'm deciding I'm still allowed to call you that now. And if I'm wrong you just have to come home and prove it. How is that school anyway? I bet everyone is constantly fighting all the time. In fact, I literally bet it. John thinks you all are managing to stay calm because he's lame. You need to write me back stat so I can prove to him that no one is that level headed. Also I want the cake he promised me if I'm right. Actually, you can just lie. I don't really care if it's actually all fighting or peaceful. I know you'll come home to us no matter what. But I do really want that cake and the right to shove it in John's face.
I'm getting distracted. I wrote for another reason. Do you remember the prestigious college in the capital? That was a stupid question. Of course you do. Why wouldn't you? It's the stupid one that only accepts men. Or, only accepted men. I wanted to be the first person to tell you they're letting me in-
The blurring of her vision was the only reason Bonnie stopped reading it. Truly, she was happy for Tessa. It was about damn time someone recognized just how talented her cute little sister was. The little blondie deserved it. But it didn't stop Bonnie from wondering what that meant for her. Would she truly be so isolated for the rest of her life? It was generous to say she was thriving. In fact, lately she'd been feeling more and more lost and alone in the world.
Unfortunately, this was not one of those times. Hastily shoving the letter back in her pocket at the sound of footsteps approaching her from behind, she tucked a hand into her sleeve to pull it up to her eyes to try to sop up the hot tears she couldn't seem to stop. Great. She was going to get caught by some servant having a mental breakdown and the maids were going to start gossiping about her now too. Whoopie. This was totally her day. "I know, I know. It's getting close to curfew. I'm about to head back to my room now."

"Speech" 'Thoughts'Stefano’s days at Utopia had him feeling like he was walking on air. Sure, it had its bullies but it was nothing like it was back in Caduceus. He also wasn’t the same scared little boy that he was back home. Joining the army had helped a lot with this embracing his powers and realizing that if people were going to laugh at him it was better if he was the one delivering the jokes even if it meant still being the butt of the joke each time. It was easier when no one expected things from you. Need someone to help with your classwork? Stefano wasn’t your guy. Need someone to teach you the newest dance? It couldn’t be Stefano. Need someone to practice your speech with? Unless you want someone to try and make out with you, then Stefano isn’t your man. There were only a few good uses for Stefano, and he knew his place. Sure, he wasn’t the brightest or the most reliable but when he was there, he ensured you would have a good time. It was the least he could do since he was still trying to process how he had gotten into this place. There were people here speaking several languages and they always seemed to know the right fork to use. Meanwhile, Stefano was still trying to keep his pants on while debating whether tomatoes were a fruit or a vegetable. Knowing your place as the class clown was comforting in some sense but made it quite taxing. All words and comments about him had to be tossed into a joke, any remarks about him being an idiot just had to be laughed off. Making the beautiful people of Utopia smile seemed like a dream, yes but, it came at a cost. No one took Stefano seriously. Even when he had really good ideas. Most of his professors had stopped calling on him during class for fear his questions were not actually questions but more comments. But his comments and stories were important. Or they could have been if they had called on him when he originally raised his hand. Couldn’t they see that he was really trying his best to belong? It just wasn’t easy being surrounded by some many good-looking people people of such high standing. But he was trying! Most of his nights were spent trying to convince someone to read to him or let him copy the work for class the next day. He wanted someone to help him with the work but that took time, time he didn’t have. It felt like the days were always speeding by for the man, even though he was from the Speed Kingdom he just couldn’t keep up. At this rate, he figured he probably never would but it didn’t stop him from trying. He found that he could cut the travel time from most places if opted to not go through the academy but through the gardens instead. Tonight, he had found himself at the library and lost track of time (fell asleep). It was nearly curfew so he knew he had to be quick. Using his garden shortcut, Stefano attempted to quietly make his way back but being as big as he was it was nearly impossible. His attempts at sneaking through the garden were quickly thwarted as heard the girl’s voice. It was Bonnie, Bonnie One to be exact. Normally she welcomed the duke with open arms, or lips depending on their setting, but this was different. " Oh Bonnie my love!" Seeing her by the fountain, the light making her face glow even more than it normally did. But something was off, it wasn’t just her attitude. Her face was red and it looked like fresh tears were streaming down it. ' Did Mirabella say something again?' The duke questioned as he got closer, inspecting the scene more. This wasn’t the first time Stefano had seen the girl cry but normally when she did there was more of an audience and a cause. And with how quiet it was, he doubted the Alore duchess was the cause of Bonnie’s distress. Forgetting his original intentions of not wanting to be discovered, Stefano found himself at Bonnie’s side, " There is no need to leave. The Fates have decided to put us together after all." His eyes sparkled at the redhead, was it wrong to hit on a girl who was currently crying? Normally, when he did so Bonnie would cheer him on but this felt different. Her eyes looked heavier than normal, her hair was out of place which was never the case for Bonnie, even her nightwear seemed… dull. In his eyes, this was the girl who craved the spotlight and got it so why was she here alone instead of demanding an audience to hear her tales of woe? Was it possible Stefano wasn’t the only one playing a role here? Looking at her sullen eyes it seemed likely. Her sleeve appeared to be covered in snot as also evidenced by her red nose. He knew she was a cute crier, but this look was different… The air was tense, making the man want to leave and find a more qualified adult but something was telling him that if he left she was going to disappear as well. But what could he say to make her stay? Feeling somewhat defeated he let out a big breath of air before speaking " Fiiinnneeee- I know it wasn’t the Fates. What really brings you out here so late at night?" Where: Gardens With: Bonnie Outfit: Hoodie and Sweats

Well, on the one hand it was definitely better that her favorite resident airhead had been the one to spot her. Any worries she had about gossiping maids flew away with the dulcet tones of his cheesy pick up lines. That did leave one teensy, tiny problem behind. That did mean Stefano was now the one watching her have some kind of mental break. Sure, he wouldn't gossip about it like the maid would, but gods above she didn't exactly want the boy toy she occasionally slept with getting this close. Close was dangerous. This was dangerous.
Trying to sniffle as quietly as possible, Bonnie shifted as he sat down beside her. If she could just keep her back to him then maybe they could get out of this like nothing happened. He would go back to his room, she would go back to hers and tonight would be a nightmare that never happened. They could just ignore that he had found her, Bonita Smith, at her most vulnerable. They could move on and go to class tomorrow as if she didn't currently feel like glass shattering. They could joke and kiss and ******** like he'd never gotten to see her at her worst.
"Fiiinnneeee- I know it wasn’t the Fates. What really brings you out here so late at night?" <********>. No they couldn't. Pulling her wrist back up to catch the fresh wave of tears that his question had seemed to squeeze out of her, she leaned back into her favorite stupid blonde. "Não é apenas figura? Claro que você me encontra assim." Letting out a small, defeated laugh ended up forcing Bonnie to hiccup. Gods this was so embarrassing. They had been through so much. She'd literally kissed him covered in blood in a weird dream. And this was how he found her? Covering her wet face with her sleeves, she couldn't help but hope this would all fade and disappear. Like this was one of Langali's bad trips.
But it didn't disappear. Stefano's strong chest stayed under her back, carrying her weight like she was little more than a feather resting against him. And on some level, wasn't that what she liked about him? He was goofy and not very smart, but he was also always there. A fun surprise who was always impressed with whatever goofy little show she was putting on. Finally letting her hands fall from her face, she leaned back and hit him with as much of an amused look as she could manage with a puffy red face. "Would I be able to get out of this is I said nothing?" Shaking her head, she reconsidered. "No, probably not."
Curling into herself, Bonnie inspected the water of the fountain. Swirling a finger over the water left a trail of bubbles, ones that she found herself doodling with poorly in an excuse to move. Nerves were invading her in a way she rarely let herself feel. Would... would Stefano hate her for admitting everything she was feeling out loud? He hated bullies, that much was easy to tell from the way he carried himself. And, you know, all of the "hey stop being such a bully" stuff he was always shouting. Would being jealous of her little sister like this be the last straw that finally pushed her over into the not a good person category for him? Was that something she could live with if he did? Probably, but she didn't want to have to.
Chancing a moment to glance at the worried expression he was giving her, Bonnie found herself lost in thought. A thought she'd never let herself think before. What exactly had Stefano gone through to hate bullies as much as he did? It was hard to think of disliking him. Clearly someone must have given him some kind of hell though for him to have the complex he did. And the more she found herself thinking about it the more she was actually curious to learn about it. About him.
This was why it was dangerous for him to see her like this. Opening up was terrifying. Letting someone in was worse. "I didn't want to be seen like this." She admitted quietly, turning back to her bubbles in the water. Her free hand came up to catch another stray tear. "I'll tell you, but I want something in return."

"Speech" 'Thoughts'This wasn’t what Stefano was made for. He was a human air balloon made for others’ entertainment; he had no business aiding Bonnie. One of the things that made her so enjoyable for him was that she was able to bounce back from her fits so easily making Stefano feel more at ease, but this, this was different. It didn’t take a genius to know that Bonnie was trying to be found right now but how was Stefano know that? Normally her tears entailed some sort of game that could be easily resolved, but her eyes told him there were no games being played today. No one had told Stefano the proper etiquette for comforting a lady, normally it was easy where there was some bully to yell at but there was no one else in the garden—just Bonnie and Stefano. Normally the blonde-haired man liked the sound of that but this was no such occasion. The air felt so thick Stefano felt himself struggling with what to say to Bonnie’s attempts at hiding from the problem. Who was Stefano to tell her to come out and tell him what her issues were? If she wanted to hide he was much more adept at that than he was about talking about her problems. Despite them sleeping together several times already, Stefano knew very little about her. Her mysterious and spontaneous ways attracted him to her, as well as her seemingly gifted abilities. Their time together in Langali’s dream sequence had shown just how far ahead of him she was. Regardless of his own abilities to bulldoze through others, Bonnie secretly ran laps around everyone without anyone knowing. But Stefano had noticed, that it was her insights after all that Langali was looking for, not the playful chaos that Stefano offered. When they had first hooked up Stefano wondered what a girl like her was doing wasting her time on him but he didn’t want to punch a horse in the mouth or whatever the saying was. Sure, she had her enemies/rivals. Stefano had noticed some tension between her and a mean girl from class but Stefano assumed it was just jealousy. So with all her talents, what did Bonnie actually have to be upset about? And what could Stefano do to make her tears go away? Seeing her so empty, was more painful than Stefano was willing to imagine. Stefano sat in silence as she played with bubbles before him. Just demonstrating how much better she was than he was, she had perfect control over her abilities while Stefano just managed to luck his way into this academy. Had Stefano heard her correctly? Did she want something from him? It sounded straight out of those stories his mom used to read to him as a kid. Did this make him the handsome knight? He had some experience slaying monsters in a sense, so he was at least more qualified for this role than the one he had stumbled into. Overly excitedly for the opportunity to show his usefulness he eagerly grabbed the girl’s hand with his own, " I’ll do anything for you Lady Bonnie. Just name it." This was his chance. He could be that guy, the one that you rely on. He had never been the one before but maybe he could try for Bonnie’s sake. It appeared she needed a win tonight and Stefano felt himself desperate to be her champion. Being so eager might be considered embarrassing but Bonnie didn’t need to know that. This wasn’t about Stefano after all. The worst thing she could say was that he was stupid, and he knew that already. At least if someone as beautiful as her was saying it was a lot easier to hear than from those who tormented him all those years ago. Plus, she had a way of teasing him that made him feel like maybe he wasn’t giving himself enough credit, Bonnie managed to see the bigger picture where Stefano was still stuck on the table of contents. The eagerness with which he grabbed her hand surprised her. Unable to help it, she found herself facing him properly. Looking up at him in wonder like she couldn't believe that Stefano was so willing to give in to her demands. Demands she hadn't even laid out on the table for him before he agreed. A wet laugh tumbled out of her mouth, the action forcing a few more tears out of her eyes as she twisted to press her face into the blond's chest. s**t. s**t, s**t, s**t. This wasn't fair, not in the slightest.
"If we're doing this, I'm not doing it out here where anyone can walk in on us." The admission sent a wave of emotion through her, as if her body could not process any more feelings for the night but knew that it was feeling something. Her face pulled out of his chest, trying to ignore the wet spot she'd absolutely just left on the chest of his sweatshirt. No instead her brown eyes found his golden eyes. "Your room or mine?"
Bonnie didn't wait for an answer. Instead she twisted her hand in his grasp to twine their fingers together before hoping up from the fountain and pulling him up with her. It wasn't hard, his eagerness bleeding into his body allowed her tiny frame to pull him along as if they were both running away from her feelings. While she'd been planning to take Stefano to her room because she hadn't given him the chance to answer. But her lovable goofball quickly turned the tables on her, taking the lead and pulling her down the hallways instead.
Resisting wasn't appealing. Not when she had been the one to ask for privacy. But damn was he fast, pulling her into his room and closing the door behind them. It wasn't the first time she'd been here. It would hopefully not be the last. But it was the first time that she stood with her back against his door, realizing just how much taller he was than her. Bonnie knew she was small, but usually didn't feel as small as she actually was. Red-rimmed eyes searched his face for just a moment before she found herself curling into his chest to seek his comfort. When he was just being himself, Stefano wasn't the most built guy. In this moment it was something that the redhead was thankful for. She liked the way his body felt against her, soft and warm and comforting when she needed it most.
Finally, she pulled her head back. Peeling off of him was the last thing she wanted to do, but this wasn't comfortable in the long term. Unfortunately, this felt like it was going to be a long talk. "You didn't have to do this." It felt like a stupid thing to say out loud at this point, yet she couldn't stop herself as she pulled him further into his own room. It almost felt wrong to approach his bed with her clothes still on. Yet here they were. The lump in her throat growing as she found herself shedding her cardigan and pulling him into bed with his sweats still on.
A few silent moments sat between them before she finally spoke. "I don't even know where to start." There was so much she needed to say for everything to make sense. It almost felt more overwhelming than should be possible. Flopping back, she pressed her palms into her eyes. This could work. Maybe if she didn't look at him when she started talking she could handle this easier. "I don't know if you have any siblings, but I have five." Yup, okay. Cool. That was a solid start.

"Speech" 'Thoughts'How could Stefano say no to Bonnie’s sad babydoll eyes? Especially when the tears started flooding out once more. Rubbing her hand that was still in his he did his best to show that he could be a sort of stability for her but who was to say what actually would happen when the walls came crumbling down? It was clear something had to give, and that Bonnie was at her wit's end. If it was his body, she wanted she had it already, multiple times but it made sense she wasn’t an exhibitionist. After all, they were at a royal university. Stefano wasn’t trying to get kicked out either for any lewd acts, but it wouldn’t have been the first time he failed to achieve the already low bar set for him. Thankfully Bonnie had some standards wanting to have privacy, He quickly grabbed his hands, that was all the motivation he needed to take her back to his room. Quickly closing the door behind him and prepared for the girl to start and devour him but instead, she just stared at him. Her chestnut brown eyes appeared to be staring down into his soul, trying to identify what his true motives were for bringing her here. Stefano was doing his best to follow orders, but it seemed like tonight Bonnie was running a different operation. It wasn’t clear what had caused this change but he didn’t mind her head continuing to burrow into his chest. It felt like she almost… needed him in more than just a sexual way. Wrapping his arms around her, he stared adoringly at her ready for her next set of instructions. Normally the night would start with light teasing and taking off one another clothes but this was nice. Better than nice actually, Stefano didn’t realize how soft a girl’s clothes could be, but the starry cardigan was a fun surprise for him to rub his hand against as he attempted to comfort her. This had been the longest amount of time he had gone without saying a word, but Stefano felt that his silence in these moments was more important than any insights he could share into the matter. Following the girl’s lead to the bed, he was ready for his role in the night to begin but instead felt the roles shifting once more as the once confident girl started avoiding eye contact with him. Trying to get more comfortable on the bed was difficult when it was a pretty girl on it that seemed like she was in some sort of distress, but he did his best to pay attention to Bonnie’s needs. ' Five siblings?' He stared at her trying not to drop his jaw but couldn’t fathom his family having so many mouths to feed before his recent “achievements”. " Five? And your parents are able to manage and take care of all you? Must have been… stressful." Trying to sound intelligent was not his strong suit but it didn’t seem like the beautiful redhead was in the mood for any of his normal nonsense. " I can’t even imagine having so many people in the house." He sighed, flopping down on the bed. The idea of having a brother or sister was something he often dreamed of as a child but growing up he realized how selfish that idea was. His parents could barely afford to raise him, another child would have caused them to starve. Now they could afford it but Stefano just wanted his mother to relax after how hard she had worked taking care of him growing up. He didn’t expect Bonnie to understand his worries but the fact she had stopped looking at him bothered the duke. Talking about family, was it possible Bonnie was hinting at wanting to start a family with him? No that wasn’t right. A noble like her wouldn’t want to be caught bagging some commoner so then why was she being so awkward? It was no matter, this was something he could fix, elongating his arms to reach around her and bring her back to his chest. Having her head back on his heart he wondered if she could hear how loud it pounded as he wondered what she wanted him to do next. " I don’t have any brothers or sisters but that’s just because the food was so escaso, no scarce, yes scarce when I am from." he mused as he rubbed his hand on the woman’s head in an attempt at comforting her, " Do any of them go here?"Where: Stefano's room With: Bonnie Outfit: Hoodie and Sweats

The bed shifted under her, nearly tossing her in the air with the force of his body flopping into the mattress next to her. The action combined with his comment had a sharp laugh barking out of her, an involuntary thing that couldn't stay stuffed deep down inside where it belonged. The redhead twisted on the bed so that she was sure she was facing away from him, her tank top shifting up and exposing her stomach with the action. It wasn't normal, the way she was craving his touch but was too embarrassed to be seen by him. And Stefano seemed to know it, his arms elongating. They were like snakes as they slithered around her to pull her in, lifting her onto his chest like she weighed nothing to him.
The warm press of his chest on her cheek was welcome. So much so that Bonnie's arms trailed up his chest before dipping under his arms and around his shoulders where she could press into the blond further. "I can't imagine how lonely you must have felt." Her eyes fluttered closed as she let herself listen to the steady rhythm of his heart. Each strong beat like the tick of a metronome. The sound a steady and comforting as she found the courage to work through exactly what had upset her.
"Oh god no!" The idea of Jasper trying to navigate the halls of this twisted school had her pressing her face into his chest to snicker before returning to the more comfortable position of having her ear pressed to his heart. "There are a lot of us, but we care about each other. I don't know if mamá and dad knew what to do with so many. Ashlynn, Jasper, Antonió, and the twins all made things easier, I think. Considering they're all fairly successful. The fact that I'm here is simply because I..." Her voice trailed off for a moment, faltering.
It was no secret that Stefano looked at her like she walked on the sea after a storm. She'd seen the twinkle in his eyes as he had realized how fast her mind worked during classes and that one strange night in the halls when they'd been evacuated into that dreamscape mess. Despite her theatrics and her temper tantrums and her silly attitude, only he had seen through her to see that behind her eyes her mind was always working. Always searching for her place. A search that seemed to come up empty. The battlefield had been the closest thing to a place she fit that Bonnie had found, yet once the ceasefire had been called she was stamped and returned home to sender without so much as a thank you for her service.
Pulling herself out of his embrace, she straddled him to sit back on his hips. This was getting too close. Once he knew too much about her, he wouldn't want to see her again. There was nothing impressive about her when compared to her siblings. If anything she was stumbling through this school for peace experiment with all of the grace of a baby deer on a frozen lake. Surely he could see that with those blue, blue eyes that liked to watch her. A creeping fear had slithered up her spine at the thought of admitting her own uselessness as a member of the esteemed Smith family. So Bonnie did what she did best. She deflected.
"Food was scarce? Why?" Swallowing the lump that had formed in her throat, she leaned forward into Stefano so that she could reach to gently trail the backs of her fingers down his cheek in a surprisingly affectionate gesture. It was strange looking at him without lust. Taking in the puff of his cheeks and the ever so slight crinkle in the corners of his eyes. It was easier to focus on him than on herself in this moment. "Was your duchy gravely attacked during the war?" The question was out of her mouth before she could stuff it back down, worry etched onto her puffy face. Stefano was always playing along with her, fitting into his role as the knight to save her so seamlessly. The idea that his childhood had been anything but charmed - or as charmed as it could be in the middle of a war - wasn't something that had crossed Bonnie's mind.
Pulling her hand from Stefano's cheek, her fingertips pressed lightly into her lips. Her mind swirling had a crease forming between her brow. "Sorry," The words were quiet, her mouth feeling dry as she searched for the right thing to say after overstepping like that. "I just... I want to know more about you." The truth slipped out easier than she expected. It must have been because she was running from confronting the looming shadow of her family that hovered over her.

"Speech" 'Thoughts'Stefano’s heart started beating more rapidly as Bonnie started asking him questions about himself. That wasn’t his intention when he mentioned his family’s battle with famine. He hoped that it would encourage the beautiful Bonnie that this was a safe place for her to talk about what was bothering her. If she knew that he was just a commoner that had gotten lucky she was sure to jump out of the bed quicker than he was to jump into hers the first time. But looking down at her puffy, beautiful brown eyes, he was having a hard time saying no. Plus she had asked too many questions for him to just dodge the subject entirely. It wasn’t Mercury’s fault that they had faced so many issues with food scarcity, due to their feud with Funkazan they had lost many of their crop plantations to their ever-increasing flames. Hopefully, now that the war was over they could start to get back on track, or at least Stefano hoped they could. Unsure where to begin, Stefano decided to begin with the first question, " Famine was something that severely tore apart our town. There were so many people fighting over food that eventually they started finding other reasons to tear each other apart." That was a kind way of putting it. An easier way was that the townspeople started turning against immigrants like his mother and overweight people like his father and himself. Going to war had helped Stefano with this but it didn’t make the mean words go away. Closing his eyes he still remembered the first time he had used his powers. He thought that a girl in his class had a crush on him but it was just a trick. Her boyfriend and his other friends shoved Stefano into an empty barrel and rolled him down a hill. While attempting to calm himself by taking deep breaths, he found himself breaking out of the barrel by inflating to five times his normal size. That, however, didn’t stop the issue of him continuing to roll down the hill increasing his speed more and more as he went. His village never forgave him for the damage he has created but he caught the attention of the town’s Duke; General Thadeus. " I am sure it is no secret but I am rather new to this royal thing," Stefano found himself explaining. " My town’s duke called me to war and realized that the better I did the more money I was able to give my mom and dad," Thinking about all the lives he took, after their most recent history lesson the concept of him only caring for his family felt selfish but he didn’t regret his decision. Not when it allowed his parents to be able to finally have a house of their own, one with more bathrooms and bedrooms then they knew what to deal with! They had endured so much, that Stefano only wanted the best for him. But now came the time for him to explain how truly undeserving of his duchy he was, " My General died in the war…" It felt increasingly difficult to look down at Bonnie as he spoke but if he was going to tell the truth it was better if he laid all the cards out on the table. " He had no “Next of Kin”?" He questioned unsure if that was the correct word used but hoped the insightful redhead would understand, " And for some reason he had put my name in his will." He felt himself laugh a little, still humored by the turn of events, " I was sure it was a mistake but then I was being taken before the high guard and his majesty. It still feels unreal being here, meeting actual princes and princesses, meeting.. you." His eyes wandered back to Bonnie, hoping he hadn’t lost her completely. " Well, that’s my secret." It felt like a huge weight had been lifted off of him. Stefano rubbed his hands on the girl’s back to ensure she was still there and hadn’t left. He could understand if she had, he was a false duke who had won the lottery undeserving of someone as pretty and crafty as Bonnie’s time. " Are you still willing to be seen with someone as low as me?" The question had left his lips before he had fully processed the weight of it. He didn’t want to risk her saying no and leaving. Especially when he had found himself enjoying her company so much, Stefano wanted to know what had caused her heart to break his evening even if that meant her severing ties afterward. For a moment there was a silence between them. A shared held breath, like the revelation that nothing would be the same between the two of them after this night was occurring to them both at this very moment. His chin tilted down, looking at her as she lounged on him like a lap cat. This was awkward and horrible and uncomfortable. Yet it also managed to feel like the most natural thin in the world as he sucked in a breath to speak.
Horror dripped over her features as he explained his parents issues with finding food. No. Worse. With his entire duchy's dwindling crops. It was a reality that Bonnie struggled to understand. Yes, they were landlocked in a country of water, but the sea still provided for them. The river that lead into Pequeno Lago provided them with plenty of fish for the townspeople to eat, not that Bonnie was able to eat anything from the sea. But that was something she was able to choose, there was enough food that she could refuse to eat something and know that her next meal was secured.
Swallowing, a small pit of guilt formed in her stomach. "That's... That's so awful. I'm sorry." Ina way, maybe they were kindred spirits. This general seemed to be the same thing to Stefano that her own had been to Bonnie. Someone who saw potential. Only... Stefano had still managed to win more than she ever could. Part of her wanted to recoil, to hide away from him knowing that he had gone through so much and not only survived, but had thrived enough to win his title. What would he think knowing that she hadn't even won a medal? A fresh wave of tear pricked her eyes, making her look away from her favorite blond.
"I don't know if I have a right to..." Her words trailed off, her wrist flying up to catch her tears despite no longer having her cardigan to absorb them. A harsh bark of a laugh tumbling out of her mouth. "You've gone through so much worse than I have and here I am crying like my problems actually matter." Gravel was invading her tone, mixing with a fresh wave of self loathing.
Scooting up, her hands brushed some of Stefano's hair out of his eyes before coming to rest on his cheeks. Part of it was to force him to look at her, but most of it was affection that was welling in her chest for the duke before her. "You are not less than me for earning your title. If anything..." The words felt bitter in her mouth as she forced them out anyway. "If anything it makes you better than me." Leaning forward, she pressed a chaste kiss to his lips. It was small, intimate. A sweet gesture that stood opposed to their normal bedroom activities.
Pulling away, she caught his eyes. "I know you can tell I fought. That I was an active participant in the war. I fought to even be there, on the front lines where I thought I mattered." The words were falling out of her, like all they could do was rush out as she admitted her least proud moments to a man she was starting to care what he thought of her. "It was hell... Women aren't generally accepted to the Stilicidium army. I had to prove my worth every day to stay. But it was better than staying home."
The idea was enough to send a tremor down her spine. The mere idea of her picture perfect dance lessons and fighting to be the picture perfect duchess like Ashlynn so she could go and hunt for a husband left a queasy feeling low in her belly. "I... God above this sound so stupid. You struggled with finding food, and here I am complaining that I never quiet fit in right at home. That I was surrounded by five siblings and I still somehow managed to be forgotten. That I fought to get out of it and went to war, only for everything to end and to be sent back home without anything to show for it."
Curling, she pressed her forehead into the chest under her as if she were trying to hide from how selfish and stupid she was being. "And worst of all, it all started because I'm too much of a selfish b***h to be happy when my litter sister writes me with good news." Guilt was eating her as the admission finally passed her lips. "No, I'm just jealous because it's just another thing one of them can do better than me. If anything, I don't see how you want anything to do with me."

"Speech" 'Thoughts'Time rarely slowed for Stefano, he often felt he didn’t have enough time but the moments he waited for Bonnie’s response felt like forever. His heart pounded so heavily he was sure it would burst out of his chest. Holding his breath, he prepared for her to walk out the door and never return and their relationship would be terminated but instead, an apology escaped from the woman’s lips, followed by more tears. Despite his heart slowing this felt worse than if she had just left. He didn’t intend for her to pity him, but it appeared that was the outcome. No one had ever shown him such kindness Stefano was left speechless as he lifted up one of his arms and attempted to wipe away her tears. He would have done anything to make her sadness stop, wishing that he had the power to turn back time and lie. To make her look at him again like he was just a joke and laugh. Her smile was one of the things that he adored most about him. Not the one she often faked but the one she used when he said something stupid, and she would call him an idiot. " Your thoughts matter to me." The words had escaped his lips before he was able to screen them. Normally this would be a nonissue given his reputation but this, this was different. It felt like he had found a lost animal and was scared of potentially scaring it off. Stefano had never seen Bonnie like this before and wanted her to that she had his undivided attention. Feeling her start to move Stefano moved his arm, ready for her to walk out and pretend the night had never happened but was greeting her with her eyes on his as she kissed his lips. It was sweeter than what he was used to, but something he found himself wanting to fall into, but she pulled away before he could continue. But as Bonnie looked at him, Stefano felt like the world had gone to a stop and nothing else mattered. The blond felt like she was truly seeing him for what he was for the first time and better yet, she wasn’t running away. She was staying. Being able to see this side of Bonnie made Stefano just want to hide her away from all the problems of the world and create a peaceful fort for the two of them to live in forever. For the first time since his first crush, he found himself only worried about one person for a change, the woman in front of him. His fingers ran through her hair as she spoke about her trials. He waited for her to pull away from the gesture, but she continued to look at him as he listened. There was no advice Stefano had for her as she looked rather crestfallen but hearing her talk so poorly about herself was something the man simply couldn’t stand for. Moving his hand to her back he attempted to do what he could to comfort her, " Anyone that isn’t able your worth is an idiot. You shine brighter than any star in the sky." His voice was soft and low as he still worried about scaring her off with the slightest misspeak. Following his instincts he pressed his lips to beauty’s forehead, " I had to work for what I had because I had nothing, but I had what matters most. My parents worked every day to make sure they knew I was loved and cared for." He didn’t mean to imply her parents didn’t but it sounded like her household was one that caused more wars than winning family of the year. " Perhaps it’s time someone taught you the same." His voice was more serious than he thought it could ever be as he stared down at the girl burrowing into his chest. " You are better than you know because you see people for who they are and have skills that this school can’t teach. Just because you don’t raise your hand when you know the answer or choose to mess around with me doesn’t change how bright you shine. Bonnie, I see you." Wrapping his arms around her, he pressed his lips against hers once again. Where: His room With: Bonnie Outfit: Hoodie and Sweats
