Established in 1768, Tomes and Scrolls has served Hogsmeade's specialty books needs for centuries. The shop has changed hands many times, but it has endured these changes with resilience. The current owner is Simon Whittaker, an American wizard who moved to the village seeking a new start. The shop features a little nook for reading amongst the shelves of books, tomes, and manuscripts available for sale.

Ella was glad she had been able to save up from her summer job of sorts. Now it meant she had a bit of extra money and could visit the bookstore! Of course, that meant she had to brave the Scottish wind to get to Hogsmeade. As she got ready for the day, Ella pulled on her purple cardigan, which she'd added embroidered stars to the sleeves. She brushed her hair, wincing at the tangles as she worked them out. She then plopped a headband on, hoping to keep her hair from blowing into her eyes.
As she headed out, Ella walked with Sebastian and Alice to the little village. She was a little glad that Sebastian was taller than her, since he served to block the wind a bit. Once in Hogsmeade, the couple split off to do... whatever couples did, and Ella hurried to the bookstore. Once inside, Ella tried to straighten her hair back down a bit. Darn the wind! She then stepped quietly to the fiction section, looking for the newly released book in one of her favorite series. Maybe she could afford to get the other two books too.... it would be nice for collecting later on.... or she could save the money... hmm hmm.

🍀☯🌷☮Lyric originally hadn't planned on going to Hogsmeade in part that he wanted to work on his project for Herbology club and mostly because he really didn't want to feel like the squeaky third wheel to Seb and Alice. Unfortunately, the land was not on his side as the day before when he went to check his plants, he found a weird bluish residue. Understandably freaked out, he ran through his notes and textbooks looking for an answer but unfortunately couldn't find anything definitive since this was a forced cross-pollination. He'd tried looking through the reference section of the library and did find a few but he knew he'd want to take them down to the greehouses and that they'd prolly get dirty and written in-as did all his textbooks ended up that way. Not wanting a fine, he just got dressed with everyone else and trudged along to the village, his mind only on going to the bookstore and getting what he needed.
As the wind attempted to chill him through his jacket, Lyric was glad he'd grabbed some hand warmers before leaving though inwardly pouting that he'd left his good beanie. He quickly walked through the groups of students and found the store, sighly in relief as he walked inside and felt immediate relief from the cold weather. Looking around, he quietly walked the aisles in search of the Herbology section, and on his way he spotted a Ella in the fiction section looking rather serious. He didn't want to bother her in case she was busy, but he also didn't want to leave her hanging in case she really did need help. Lyric just gave an internal shrug and sigh and decided to at least say hi and see if that lead anywhere. He made sure to make noise as he approached, not wanting to startle the shorter teen, and as he got closer he noticed the books she was looking at were new releases. "Oh, I've heard about this series but I never actually read it. Is it any good?" he asked softly.

While holding the collector's copy in one hand, Ella held the regular hardcover variant in the other. She could afford either, and that made it harder! But then again, there weren't any other big releases this year that she knew of... so perhaps it would be a nice treat to buy the fancy versions. As she was thinking, someone spoke just behind her, causing the brunette to squeak and duck a bit. After turning, she realized it was a safe person and she let out a soft breath.
"O-oh, hi there. Sorry, you surprised me. But yes, it's a really good series." Ella nodded, offering a little grin. "The school library has the first two, but book three just came out. I was trying to decide if I should buy the books... or the fancier version with art on the edges." She showed the books, one having plain white edges while the other boasted fancy artwork on the pages. Their covers were also different, with the collector's edition having inlaid metallic designs that added a bit of pizazz.

🍀☯🌷☮Lyric winced as Ella still verbally started and even ducked a bit making him feel even worse. Luckily though, she realized it was him and even smiled up at him before explaining about the books. Apparently her worries were just about which version to buy as one was just the book but the other was a fancier version with fun designs and artwork. He could sort of understand that; when he was younger and still living with the others, he'd always admired one of the Elder's bible as it was way fancier than the scruffy one he'd been given. It'd had metal corners and the lettering seemed iridescent and shined a kaleidoscope of colors from the candle flames as they studied during midnight bible study. It was pretty much the main thing that would get him into trouble as he'd been caught staring more than once and called out for his covetous ways. If he'd been a pettier human, he would've found a way to take it with him when he and Afon ran away. But whenever he thought like that, he'd be filled with guilt as if they were actually right to punish him the way they had. All this to say, Lyric didn't feel as though he was the right person for Ella's question. "Uhm...I guess the one that'd make me the happiest? Or at least, the one I'd regret most if I didn't get it." Lyric gave a short nod and a conciliatory pat on the shoulder for the hopefully wise words he pulled straight from thin air.

As she showed the books to Lyric, Ella was wondering what was going through his head. She'd only been allowed to own her own books (or anything, really) a few years ago, so it was something of a delight when she was able to purchase something. It made it even nicer that the money was all earned herself by helping Aunt Lynn with her cursebreaking paperwork. At least it was something she'd gotten pretty good at. Her dark eyes sparkled a bit with the smile that fell on her face at Lyric's advice. Get the one that made her happiest. The one she wouldn't regret. It was pretty solid advice.
With a small nod, the brunette turned back to the shelf, carefully returning the basic copy. Instead, she lifted the collector's edition of book one and two as well, adding them to her arms. "Thanks, Lyric. That was some really smart thinking." She hugged the books a bit tighter, then realized he'd probably come for a reason. "You can borrow them, if you'd like. I can loan you book one and two while I read three, then you can borrow it too." A perfect solution, and it helped a friend!
"D-did you need help finding a book? If you're looking for recommendations, I have a few. Or I can help you look for something specific too." Of course, she only knew the store as well as she did because she was too scared to ask the shopkeep anything yet. So far, she'd only worked up to nervous waves before scurrying away. Maybe eventually she'd be able to talk to people more easily. But if Lyric was looking for something, she had the time to help him find the books. Besides, it was the least she could do to repay him for his help!

🍀☯🌷☮Lyric grinned in response to Ella's as she apparently made her choice to put back the plain book and keep the fancy one. Even going so far as to pick up two more fancy ones which he guessed to be the other books of the series. Cool, mission accomplished. He just shrugged a bit, bashful at Ella's thank and slight praise for his words, not thinking he really offered much. "'Dunno about that, but I'm happy it helped." He was surprised a bit when she offered to lend him her new books to get started in the series while she kept the newer one. A very nice offer, but unfortunately one that had him squirming with some unresolved feeling. "Thanks for the offer, but I don't think it'd be a good idea. I have a bad habit of writing in my books and I'd feel awful if I ruined your new fancy ones."
Not even a complete lie; Lyric was pretty sure he was on the thinnest of ice with the school's librarian regards to his borrowed books. But sometimes he couldn't even help it! He'll be so focused on studying or referencing, he's highlighted a passage or even writing a correlating item in the margins and then boom. Fine city.
It was that knowledge and Ella's question and suggestion for help that reminded Lyric why he was there in the first place. "Maybe? I'm looking for the Herbology section, specifically books on cross pollination, mildew and fungus, and possibly fertilizer reactions?" Lyric scratched lightly at his hands. From what he'd observed on his plant and briefly read from reference, his residue problem could be an indicator of alkaline soil, a root system fungus that had infected the whole plant, or his plant was hitting puberty. Truthfully, he didn't know which was harder to manage.

Ella was glad that Lyric had managed to help her figure out her quandary about books. Even if they didn't talk frequently, he was still a nice person. Plus, if Alice and Sebastian liked him, he couldn't be bad! "It did help!" She was happy he'd helped anyway, because now she felt happier about her choice. If someone agreed with getting the fancy set, it was less likely to be wrong. That thought led her to offer her new books on loan, but Lyric quickly said no to it. Apparently he had a habit of writing in his books. "Thanks for the warning. Maybe it'd be safer to borrow the Library copies." Ella giggled softly, brushing her hair out of her face a bit.
After asking about Lyric's search for books, Ella was a little surprised to hear his response. It was a book on cross pollination, one on mildew and fungus, and one on fertilizers.... Oh man. Ella frowned a bit, trying to think if she knew any of those books. "Well... I'm not the best at Herbology, but we can look together." Maybe it would've been better if she had asked Alice to come along with her. Instead, she was determined to figure this out.
Ella stepped forward, her silent steps guiding them toward the nonfiction section. From there, she located a section of Herbology and Botanical literature. Her little fingers tapped over the spines, before pulling out a book she'd seen several times before. "Let's see... Tàmhas had a copy of this one..." She slid out a copy of 'Be your own Bee! A guide to Plant Hybridization' and offered it over to Lyric. "Or here's one about fertilizers, but I don't know about reactions. A-Alice is better than me at Herbology." For that, she held over Dragon Droppings & Other Fun Fertilizers. She wasn't sure it was right, but hopefully it'd help.

🍀☯🌷☮Lyric just grinned as Ella thanked him again, this time for his refusal admittance and suggested borrowing from the library instead. He just snorted a bit alongside her giggling before saying, "I'll look into it, and into bringing a notebook to hopefully curb my habit." He wasn't sure if it would actually help but anything was better than catching the ire of the librarian. Again. He felt a bit guilty that Ella might be giving up valuable time just to help him look for something she even said she wasn't familiar with. Before he could say that though, the shorter teen set off in her search and he curiously followed after her. He watched her locate the section and thumb through book titles before finding one that apparently Tam had, a definite point in the book's favor in Lyric's opinion, and then even found others on fertilizers. Unfortunately it was one he'd already looked through but he was more than happy that Ella had even spent the time looking.
"These are honestly great finds. I'll for sure take the guide but I already looked through this fertilizing book. But...maybe I should get it anyway, for referencing. Plus, just because it doesn't help me know doesn't mean it won't in the future, right?" Lyric also didn't mention that perhaps he'd been too hurried in his desperation to fix his FlitterFlutter so maybe the fertilizer book would be helpful. He turned to also peruse the books, eyes gleaming at all the different titles. "Thanks allot for this, Ella, you really helped me out. I really hope I'm not keeping you from something else." It was a Hogsmeade weekend afterall and while he didn't know much about her, he knew that besides Seb and Alice she also hung around a few clubs and groups.

When Lyric snorted at Ella's thanks for not potentially writing in her new books, Ella was glad. At least he sounded happy enough. He then noted that he was planning on bringing a notebook along with him to -hopefully- help with his book-writing habit. "I've heard that writing passages down helps you remember them anyway, so perhaps it will serve a dual purpose." She often wrote notes on her reading in a notebook, so she hoped it would help Lyric's woes as well. It couldn't hurt, anyway, and who knew how many books they might have saved!
Once they had figured out her book situation, Ella led Lyric over to the nonfiction section for the more important of their tasks. She tried her best to find books pertaining to Lyric's quandaries, and when he said they were great finds, she felt a rush of relief. Something about knowing that she'd been able to help out. He said he'd already read through one of them, but wanted to get it anyway, just in case. It was probably wise, or perhaps Ella just liked to own her own book copies. "Plus then you can annotate the margins to your heart's content." The Hufflepuff let out a small laugh, sweeping a bit of her hair behind her ear.
Ella turned to glance back over some more books. Maybe he'd be better off asking Nicholas or Alice, since both were good with plants. Or... maybe she could write a letter to Linsey! She was super good with plants... but she lived kinda far away. Oh! Didn't Tàmhas live near the castle? If he still did, perhaps he'd be good to send word to. Of course, Ella figured Lyric was smart enough to have already asked his resources, so perhaps it was all in vain anyway. She pondered over the titles, then looked over in a bit of surprise when Lyric thanked her. He said he hoped he wasn't keeping her, and Ella quickly shook her head. "O-oh no. I mostly came here for these books, and you helped pick which set. I was thinking about maybe looking at some easy recipe books, but I'm not so sure about that one. I may just wait until Alice and Sebastian are done so we can walk back." She blushed a bit, feeling silly for not wanting to walk back alone. Sure, she could, but she'd grown somewhat accustomed to making the walk with her friends. Or... maybe she could stop by the stationary stop and get a nice notebook for Lyric's practice in annotating beside his books.

🍀☯🌷☮Lyric nodded a bit eager as Ella continued on his scribbling trait happy that someone else understood his methods. "It really does! And putting in my journal is fine, but sometimes if I see my notes right next to the section, it helps me remember faster!" He's gotten better at organizing his notebooks so its easier for him to flip through and find what he needs, but sometimes he also needs that "quick fix." He turned his attention back to the books, comparing what he already has to what's in front of him. A few titles seemed promising, so he shifts the two books into the crook of one arm so he can pull some others to flip through. He had just pulled another when Ella answered his question in negative explaining that coming to the bookstore was her main objective and that he'd actually helped her in choosing what to buy which he was glad to do. She was also apparently looking into recipe books as a way to pass time before meeting back up with Seb and Alice.
"What kind recipes were you thinking? Pasta doesn't seem too bad, especially the ones you can just do in one pot. Some veggie dishes too but I guess those depend on flavor and seasoning-hang on. Sorry, 'scuse me real quick," Lyric paused his rambling as he spotted a home and garden book that just might be what he needed that unfortunately was a bit above Ella's head. He offered her a sheepish grin as he pulled out the book before it blossomed into a full blown smile of triumph as this book was exactly what he needed.
"Sorry, where was I? Oh! Veggies! Or vegetarian dishes. I don't really like the look of vegan, it's either all raw or barely cooked veggies or foods that look way too much like meat so why wouldn't you just eat the meat?" He'd seen videos of people making fried chicken out of these gigantic mushrooms and while he could understand that some people couldn't eat meat for a variety of reasons, trying to trick your body into believing something just seemed weird. He'd had vegan food before, knew it was vegan, and he was perfectly ok! "But yeah, what kinda food are you considering?"

Ella nodded along as Lyric agreed that having a notebook helped, though he quickly said it helped to have the notes right in the book. At that, the smaller teen pondered a second, before coming up with an idea. "Well, maybe... oh! The stationary store has clear sticky notes. Perhaps you could put one on the page and notate there. It would be in the book, but not cause damage to the pages." Perhaps they could brave the wind and walk to the other store together. She could always use some nice pens anyway.
As she spoke about considering recipe books, Lyric asked what sort of recipes she was considering. And wasn't that the question? Pretty much everything she tried had turned out pretty rough. When he paused, Ella froze up, then she ducked down under Lyric's arm. She grinned a bit, carefully staying a bit crouched until he had pulled the book in hand. At least he'd excused himself... and grinned! That was better than some did. Her honey brown eyes sparkled when excitement when he grinned excitedly. That must be the book he'd been looking for! Hooray!
Ella offered a small smile as Lyric had to get himself back on track. Apparently he liked vegetarian meals, but not quite so with vegan meals. She nodded along, not really sure what the difference was between the two, unless there were cheese and eggs involved. "I think maybe it's a preference thing..." It made sense as to why they used veggies in lieu of meat. Maybe it was a morals issue, with not wanting to eat animals? Maybe there was a chance it was similar to an allergy, like how she couldn't eat shrimp...
When Lyric asked about her preferences with cooking, Ella tugged on a lock of her hair, pulling it free from behind her headband. "I'm not really sure, honestly. I've tried a few recipes from România, plus lots from... well, everywhere else, and it doesn't seem I've had luck with any of them. Even with help sometimes." She sighed softly, wishing she'd gotten the same talent as Alice or Linsey... or even Sebastian, though his food often looked a little wonky.

🍀☯🌷☮Lyric blinked twice in surprise at hearing about clear sticky notes that could potentially help with his notation...not a problem but it was clearly not appreciated by anyone other than himself. "That's a pretty good idea. I'm not sure I'll have the money for it though after these books." It had taken allot of persuasion for him to start taking money from Eula, mainly it was in the form of a "salary" for the work he did over break. When he was younger, he couldn't do too much at the club due to his age so he primarily helped with office work whenever he could. The task had stayed with him as he'd gotten older and now it was his primary job when not focusing on school work or being a "stupid reckless teenager" (Eula's words, not his).
Lyric hmm'd as Ella discussed that she wasn't sure she had a preference of recipes and what ones she'd already tried. He was a bit surprised to hear that some had been Romanian but figured maybe she'd tried some dishes that she'd really liked. "I don't cook often either, mainly easy stuff like sandwiches or those boxed meals. I've gotten really good at jazzing up cup noodles though." Lyric chuckled at his own words.
