Seren was so glad the semester was over. Sure she had some between semester work for the Professor she worked directly under, but she had so MUCH more time on her hands during these weeks, and her only wish was Nate was here... She was at his apartment for the moment, cuddled up with Remy, reading a book.
She knew he'd back for dinner, or at least that was what he promised. He'd been getting so busy lately, and ended up having to take on more shifts.
She really hoped tonight wouldn't be one of those. For now she was treating the situation as if her boyfriend was going to be there, and Remy was happy to cuddle for the moment.

He honestly could barely feel anything when he came to. Warmth, mostly, and a very distant pain. It was hard to see, but he could hear...sort of. There were sirens in the distance, and the vague sounds of voices shouting this, that, and the other. Greg, his partner for the shift, was just beside him on the other side of the door. Wasn't he supposed to be in the passenger seat?
"C'mon, Nate," he said. "Just hang in there. Cap's here, so is everyone else. They'll get you out."
It hurt to breathe but he tried anyway. Shallow breaths, but they were there. His vision blurred once or twice, and he tried to squint to make out his partner's face. He wound up just closing his eyes again, and the last thing he heard was the sound of the Jaws of Life starting to cut into some metal...before everything went black.

Seren had been thinking about getting up and making herself another a cup of tea, when she heard her phone going off. She frowned, not expecting any calls, and she wiggled carefully to grab it. She didn't recognize the number but... She had one of those feelings and she just answered, eyes wide and concerned.
"Hello?"
The voice on the other said "Hello, is this Seren Yong? This is Captain Logan Brown from Station 638."
Her heart skipped a beat as she almost panickedly confirmed who she was.
The Captain continued. "You are listed as Nathaniel Whitmore's emergency contact. He was in an accident while out in the Ambulance, and he has been taken to Destiny City General Hospital. Will you be coming?"
Seren confirmed she would be there as fast as possible, and was informed the Captain would meet her there. As soon as she hung up, she called her brother, and explained the situation, asking him to come drive over, because she was too upset to drive. Dai agreed and rushed over as fast (but safely and legally) as possible, and within 30 minutes, he was dropping her off... And went back to Nate's place, because she was concerned about how Remy would be reacting to her panic-leaving.
Seren went into the waiting room, and looked around.

There was a small hoard of EMTs in uniform in the waiting room, though no one noticed her at first because they were all focused on another door. Eventually, though, a large, hulk of a man approached her. He had the look of a seasoned veteran in their field, but there was a gentleness in his periwinkle eyes. He was bald, though what he lacked on top of his head he more than made up for with his full, graying, beard.
"Ms. Yong?" he asked. The room quieted, and all eyes turned to him first, then to her.

Seren looked up at the man, her face pale and eyes huge in her face. "Yes, I am Seren Yong. Are you Captain Brown? Is he ok?"

"Yes," he said, "I'm very sorry to meet you under these circumstances." He glanced around at the others, then gestured for her to follow him to a more private section of the waiting room, away from their stares. He didn't imagine she noticed, not considering how worried she looked, but it didn't seem right to discuss the matter where everyone could see exactly how she reacted. Everyone reacted different, after all. Some could stay composed, while others became completely hysterical. It was hard to tell how she would take it.
"Their ambulance got T-boned, driver-side, by a large pick-up. Nate was driving, so he was in pretty bad shape when we got there. We got him out as fast as was safely possible, and we got him stabilized as best we could while we raced over here. He's in surgery now, that's honestly the best that I can tell you."

Seren followed him, not noticing anyone at all, really, except the Captain. When he spoke, her eyes went bigger, impossible as that might seem, as he described what had happened. She trembled, but other than those two things, she did not visibly react at all. There was a long moment of silence, as she processed every word.
"We... Well. He's... He's stabilized, they hav... Haven't indicated his life is threatened, s... So I am going to hope for the best. Do we have a... Any idea of how long it is going to be before he's out of surgery and I c...c... Can go see him?"
She was controlling Every response inside, hard, trying not to melt down in a panic attack, and also not to scream her rage at the pick up truck's driver, wherever that ******** might be.

There was the smallest bit of relief in the back of his mind as he watched her react to the news. All things considered she was relatively composed, though he could only imagine what all was going through her mind. She spoke very stiffly, he noted, perhaps an indication of the effort she was putting in to keep herself together.
"No, we don't, I'm sorry. That's what we're all here for, minus the ones on shift at the station."
It was at that point the sound of the sliding doors broke the silence in the other section of the waiting room. "Are you all family for Nathaniel Whitmore?" asked the nurse that came out.

"Ah. Th. Thank you..." She might have said more but the nurse that came out thoroughly redirected her attention.
