Destiny City is a large place, with a large population. It’s not uncommon to find a lost item here or there. Maybe a keychain, an earring, a book.

But, a six sided die? That’s different.

While traveling through Destiny City, you find a strange little object. It looks like old, stained wood, but something shiny in it catches your eye. How could you resist picking it up? But then, maybe you've found one of these dice before. Maybe you remember the Gameboard, already.

Uneventful was the word that came to mind as Waipoua wandered somewhat aimlessly through a park on the opposite end of the city. The idea was to keep this part of his life as far away from the rest of her life as she could manage, so while it wasn't exactly convenient to travel that far as a civilian…overall, it still made the most sense. At least to her.

With her personal life and her work life unexpectedly starting to tangle together, it was a small comfort to feel that at least there was one thing in her life that still made some kind of sense.

Shoving the thought aside, the Page stopped in her tracks when she spotted a random wooden die in the middle of the road. That felt a little suspicious, but after glancing around and seeing no one, then focusing to try and spot an icky Chaos signature in the area yielding no results, Waipoua found herself leaning down to pick it up.

Mistake number one.

The world around her went pitch black for a few seconds before a path lit up before her.

"What was the quote?" she found herself asking as she stared at the die in her hand. "'What fresh hell is this?' I think?" Though only one thing made sense. So she stooped and rolled the die, noting the number it landed on before picking up and starting to make her way down the path.

Space 5
A dog barks, fierce and frightening. You can hear its growl and the hackles stand up on the back of your neck. You can practically feel spittle on you. It’s close. And it’s big. And it’s angry. If this beastly dog could reach you, no doubt it would try to tear you to shreds.

The growling started low after she'd gone a few steps into her designated square. It was low but not out of earshot, and slowly but surely she could feel the hairs on the back of her neck start to stand. The growling only grew in volume the further in she got, soon turning into barking–the loud, very angry sort of barking–and somehow she could feel whatever it was coming up behind her.

Some kind of dog, she imagined, large and beastly, with wild eyes and unnecessarily sharp teeth.

Her leisurely pace naturally started picking up. The faster she went, the louder it got. And the closer it seemed to get. It wasn't long before she was in a full on sprint, and as she was coming up on the end of the tile she stooped low and rolled her die, slowing down just enough to note the new number and pick it back up before she raced to what she could only hope would be safety.

The barking and growling was quickly replaced by sounds of the ocean, and the smell of saltwater filled her nostrils when she took her first breath. It was soothing in a way, and brought her back to more pleasant times in her childhood…

Space 9
The smell of saltwater fills the air, and you can hear the water lapping against the shore. You hear boards creaking, and bells in the distance. And then, a song. Haunting. Ghostly, and calling you. For a second, you fall in love. And then, water fills your lungs. You’re choking, you can’t breathe. The song is loud and seems to caress you, even as a wet chill gathers in your square. Scaly hands reach for you, you gently caressing, and try to lure you into an endless sleep.

Memories she quickly and quietly tucked away even though she slowed back down to a comfortable walk. She didn't feel the immediate need to rush through here, after all.

Not until the song started, anyway. It sent a chill through her, but despite herself she sought after it. Moved toward it, fell into an emotion she couldn't quite identify but one that filled her with a sense of longing. Zayaan came to mind for a split second before suddenly, and all at once, she couldn't breathe.

Her lungs burned as she somehow breathed in water instead of air. Through the pain she could still hear the song, even as she slowly fell to her knees, pace slowed down to barely a crawl. She cast the die once more, eyes watering as she clawed her way to the end of the tile.

Against the scaly hand that wrapped itself around her ankle, gently. As though reassuring her that she would be fine. She knew she would be, she just had to get to the next tile.

Waipoua grit her teeth as the searing pain in her lungs lingered even into the next tile. Which made sense…but whatever this sick and twisted game was, she was ready for it to be over.

Space 10
A swampy smell fills the air. You take a step, and you seem to sink into it. Mud creeps over your feet, and you sink rapidly. Ankle deep, knee deep. Whether or not you squirm and fight against it, you are sinking. The mud is crushing and painful, and if you sink too deep it steals the breath from your lungs. There’s nothing to grab onto; you have to roll your dice quickly before that too gets sucked into the muddy quicksand.

The swampy smell was less pleasant than the ocean from the last tile, but at least she was drowning here, so she'd take it. Once she was back on her feet again, she took her first step. The squelch was telling enough, but she looked down anyway and saw that her foot had completely sunk into the mud.

"Of course," she muttered, about to move so she could start trying to get her foot out of the mud when she realized she was already starting to sink into it. And she was sinking fast.

Swear words rolled off of her tongue as she quickly rolled the die in her hand as the sensation of getting crushed by the mud that had already gotten to her waist was just starting to set in.

She fought her way out of the mud and stumbled out of the swamp, just a couple of spaces forward, a slew of curses simmering in the back of her mind. As an adult she thought she'd picked all the bones she had with the universe, but now that she had this new Knight responsibility on her shoulders, apparently that wasn't going to be the case anymore.

Not after this.

Space 12
The smell of smoke is in the air. You can’t see what’s burning, but you can hear distant screams, and–carnival music? It feels like people are running past you, and the air fills with panic and alarm–but there’s nowhere for you to go, and the smoke is so thick. You’d better roll quickly so you can get out of here.

The smell of smoke and the sound of screaming in the distance, as soon as she stepped into her next designated tile, cut her thoughts off incredibly quickly.

Waipoua barely had time to think before the smoke got to be almost impossibly thick, she had to crouch just to keep her vision even a little bit clear. The screaming and the panic and alarm were slowly starting to get to her, and she was hacking and coughing as she made her way across to the other end of the tile, rolling as soon as she got there.

Hopefully she wouldn't pass out from all the smoke inhalation mid-roll.

Given her luck for the evening, she was surprised she managed not to lose consciousness despite all that smoke.

The walk to the next tile even allowed her some time to gather herself.

Space 18
You smell something poison, something noxious. You pass through a haze of strange, green gas as you enter the square, but it fades after a few seconds. You feel cold. You feel empty. You start to decay. Maybe a part of you knows it’s an illusion, but in that split second when your body feels like it might go limp and when you look at your hand and see skin melting. You see bone. You’d best roll the dice so you don’t wind up a skeleton prop for the next player.

Waipoua snapped her eyes open as soon as a deep cold settled inside of her, in the very pit of her stomach. She caught wisps of a green gas seconds before it disappeared, a strange, creeping emptiness then starting to take hold.

Something was off. It had to be, but she couldn't spare too much time just standing there while she wondered so she started walking. Glancing down, feeling a weird tingling in her hands, she lifted them and felt her stomach churn at the sight of her skin melting away to reveal the bone beneath all the muscle and tissue.

"This can't be real," she muttered, quickly rolling the die once more.

She scooped up the die as she exited the tile, and once outside she stopped in her tracks and looked again at her hands.

Her skin was back to normal, and although that didn't quite ease her stomach at least she knew that she wasn't falling apart and about to get left here as some kind of skeletonized warning for anyone else unlucky enough to find themselves on the same tile.

Space 20
The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

She knew it had ended as soon as she stepped onto the next designated tile, and a relief washed over her then. The darkness and the illuminated path faded away soon enough, and before she knew it she was right back in Destiny City.

Still in the park, still holding the die, except now her lungs hurt, she was covered in dried up mud, and her head was throbbing.

Definitely time to call it a night, she thought as she dismissed the die into her subspace. She could toss it later, but for now she had to find a safe enough spot to power down before she headed home.
