Web of Secrets (7) : Spiders have settled in all across town, and while this isn’t normally any great cause for concern, inky black spiders are oddly common. The spiders themselves are not very threatening–small, nonpoisonous, and cowardly. The interesting thing about them is their black webbing–and the strange designs they make. Webs appear overnight, often seeming to come out of nowhere. They are curiously designed, almost as if made to deliberately spell out something. People all over town have mentioned finding webs that spell out a single word, or part of a sentence. Maybe it’s just imagination, but as the days go on, the words seem to be clearer–and the messages are often uncomfortable or distressing. There’s no evidence that the spiders can spell or are trying to send messages, but really–is it that hard to believe? Once a spider has left a message, it disappears. They are masterful escape artists and cannot be caught. There’s no telling what the spiders want you to know, but maybe if you’re lucky one will leave you a message you understand.
So many people liked this time of year to be out and about. The color of the leaves changing, the temperature being just cold enough to start wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, but not so cold that it was freezing, Pumpkin spice everything, most people loved this time of year.
Lenora did not.
Well, she didn’t really like any time of year. Or going outside at all. If she didn’t need vitamin D and having to go out and collect energy for her quota, she would probably never show her face outside to anyone, staying behind a computer screen, inside a temperature-controlled room was her idea of happiness. Unfortunately the Negaverse asked her to go outside more than she wanted. Sure, she had willingly signed up to be a teacher at the school as they had advertised working from home for some classes such as hers, but she hadn’t anticipated having to go and get energy just to fill a quota because she also had to become an Agent.
It was such an annoying chore to do, often times being interrupted and attacked because she was doing it. It’s not like she had killed anyone! Why didn’t they go after actually dangerous Agents and just leave her alone!
If she knew who they were they would have gotten so hacked…
None of that mattered at this time though, she was outside for different reasons. She was now having to take her groceries back to her apartment herself as her usual delivery had to be cancelled due to no one showing up. They probably paid terrible wages and Xmas seasonal jobs were popping up temporarily that were most likely paying more. So not unexpected but still enough to make her grumpy.
What she had noticed on her walk to and from the store was that there appeared to be more spiderwebs than usual. At least for her. Apparently just about every year there was a sudden increase in spiders in October, different kinds, different shapes, colors, etc. so compared to other places it would have been something of concern, but for her it felt somewhat normal, even if she didn’t like it.
Though, that was from running into a few that had decided making a web across the width of the sidewalk was a good idea.
She had also seen posts on the internet, mostly cryptid forums and whatnot, had to keep an eye out on possible Youma sightings, that people had been seeing messages in the webs, most of the time one word, but sometimes a very short sentence. She had attempted to see these “words” in the webs, but either because she was at the wrong angle to see them or they just weren’t there, she had yet to see one that she could truly say was trying to tell her something. Only one of them had what she thought was the word “Moon” on it, but whether that was supposed to mean something to her she couldn’t be sure. Still, if it was warning her about the White Moon, perhaps they were up to something…?
She would have to look online when she got home.
