Pyrrhus liked Destiny City. It felt...good. Vibrant. Thriving., like somewhere he wanted to be and wanted to stay. Sure, it was absolutely haunted by wacky magic bullshit, but that was fine, wacky magic bullshit could be dealt with. And even that was sort of fun, sometimes. The attacking gargoyles? Great excuse to beat the s**t out of something. Weird ghost stories? A fun time, if you weren't afraid of ghosts, and frankly, Pyrrhus was afraid of much nastier things than ghosts.

So when his eyes were drawn to a strange die lying on the ground, he actually felt a jolt of excitement. Helene and Kaifeng had mentioned something like this, warned him to keep an eye out--

Unfortunately for them, Pyrrhus was very much of the "you can't tell me what to do" persuasion, with a side of "yeah but now I'm gonna."

Anyway, it obviously hadn't killed them, so clearly this was just gonna be a good time.

So he darted over and scooped it up, bouncing it between his hands.

There was a burst of wind, and Pyrrhus found himself swept away, laughing as he went.

Space 6: You hear a shrill, humming noise; it sounds almost like something is firing past you–and sometimes, you even feel a sharp burst of air, like something has just missed you. Maybe, even, it does get a slice out of you. Sharp, bladelike threads seem to string up around you; you’d best be careful not to get cut on any of them between now and your next dice roll.

6.

Clearly the gameboard was afraid of his presence; it recognized that he was someone it needed to ferry along as quickly as possible. Good; Ryla liked being terrifying. Liked to terrify. There'd been a distinct lack of that for him lately; he found himself doing far too much running and hiding and far too little hunting.

He was, by his people's sacred beliefs, the son-in-soul of the Lord of Murder. He needed to live up to that.

He walked at an easy pace down the board, tossing the die between his hands but never letting it fall in a proper "roll", lest that complicate things. No reason to rush; this little adventure wasn't going to end so quickly, and Pyrrhus was content to let it drag out as long as he needed to.

When he landed on his square, and felt that whoosh of air rush past him, he felt a jolt of adrenaline. Yes, this was it--this was exactly what he needed. Real danger. Real adrenaline. Something he could beat.

The sharp threads that glimmered in the air around him--he remembered making his way throguh a security system that had something like this, designed to trap an intruder who rushed.

But he was small, and flexible, and twisting carefully around them was more fun than he'd had in a long time.

He roleld his die again, eager to see what this place had for him next.

Space 7: Something is twitching and flapping above you, and while you might be minding your own business, something is a little too invested in what you’re doing. You can’t see them, but you suddenly hear shrill, high pierced noises that are disorienting and confusing. They can bring about dizziness and pain and can cause vertigo if you’re stuck in them for too long.

When a 1 came up as the next number, Pyrrhus huffed. Fine, fine, no charging straight through, he would go at whatever pace this place wanted him to. He ducked around the last of the strange silver threads and stepped onto the next space, and immediately, he regretted it.

He had come to hate the feeling of being watched, of eyes in the dark that were constantly on him--and these? These came with an awful sound that made him bring his hands up to his ears, dropping the die on the way. It rolled, and he darted forward to see where it was going to take him.

No reason to linger here and suffer.

Space 11: You hear a frantic flapping above you, but that’s all the warning you get before a hoard of bats descend. They scratch and slap and screech, but you avoid getting bitten. For now. You’ve invaded their space and they seem keen to defend it. You can try to fight them, but the only way to escape them is to roll again.

Fine. Okay. This place wasn't all fun and games, Pyrrhus got that. He scooped up his die again, running the four squares to get him to his next destination, relieved when the ringing in his ears stopped.

Of course, the last awful sound was replaced by a new awful sound--wingbeats, and the screeches of angry bats. Fine, so he'd gotten one square of enjoyable heist shenanigans, and now he had screaming beasts all over him. Wasn't that just the ******** way of the world.

"Is this because I was cocky? Am I being punished?" He demanded, as if there was anyone to answer him.

Naturally, no answer came.

He grumbled, and rolled the damn die again.

Space 13: At first, the square is quiet. Nothing seems amiss. It’s unnerving in how safe it seems. But then, it only takes a few seconds before you understand why. It’s just taken a moment for them to get to you. The patter of tiny feet is rapidly approaching. There’s no light to see them, but there’s a reflection in their beady eyes. Rats. Thousands of them. Chittering, frothing in the mouth. These are strangely grotesque, mutated abominations. They’re running at you like they haven’t got a fear in the world–only, hungry. And rage. If they get to you, they’ll eat you alive. The ground is trembling with their weight. You’d better roll quickly if you don’t wind up a meal.

Pyrrhus got to his next square, and felt tension crawl up his spine. This was too quiet. Too safe. Something was definitely wrong here, and he didn't trust the quiet that descended around him.

Honestly, the sound of tiny feet and awful chittering was sort of reassuring, after a silence that could not be real. That was it. That was the threat. And Pyrrhus just had to be faster than the threat.

He ran, and he rolled the die as he went.

Space 15: Bats. Maybe you missed them attacking earlier, but they’re back again, and angrier than ever. Instead of just screeching or scratching, they’re swooping down and biting now–and the effects are instantaneous. The little teeth are sharp and painful, but once bitten you might feel agitated and prone to violence, and you might feel perpetually cold and hungry with no relief in sight. The effects might last when you leave the square–or they might linger for a few hours or days after you get out of here.

Ryla had outrun the rats, sure. And the last time he ran into a bunch of bats, he'd gotten away safe. But this time, that wasn't to be, apparently--because the creatures descended on him, and he felt little teeth and claws sinking into him as he ran.

He shivered, and was suddenly acutely aware that he hadn't eaten before he headed out. He'd gotten used to hunger; it was a constant companion on a dying world. And sometimes he just...forgot. That food was a necessity. Tonight had been one of those nights, and as he pushed his way through, smacking bats out of the way, he resolved that he was going to dive into the fridge and see if he found anything he could eat. Or maybe he'd cook something and see who else needed a post-patrol meal.

But all that was predicated on him getting out, so he rolled the die and hoped it got him closer to the exit.

Space 17: Something howls in the distance. It’s loud and echoes with such ferocity it seems to shake you. On the other side of you–another howl. Closer. This one is loud enough to hurt your ears. The ground trembles with the force of something charging at you. A growl, a snarl. Yellow eyes staring you down. There’s not just one monster out there–there’s several, and they’re all coming for you.

Ryla was still shivering as he stumbled into the next square--but he could see it, in the distance. The soft glow of the exit.

He could hear creatures howling all around him, and he shivered again, sure that whatever was coming was going to get him. Or at least it wanted to.

"You can't have me," he growled, and he stormed forward, throwing the dice and waiting to see how much more of the path it opened up. He was so close--just a little further, and he'd be able to go home and tell Helene and Kaifeng that they were right and this <******** sucked.

Space 20: The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

Finally. Finally, the end was in sight.

Pyrrhus staggered onto that final square, and was glad for the warm light that surrounded him, depositing him back on the street where he'd found the die.

Still, he held onto it as he made his way back to Lianli and Huanxi's place; he'd raid the fridge when he got there and make up some kind of massive dish for everyone. Maybe with noodles. Noodles stretched things far.
