The Creature in the Well (9) : While Destiny City has a modern water system, it’s not uncommon to see decorative wells around the city. Often in parks or around gardens, they grant a peaceful, countryside flair to the otherwise busy metropolis. Most days, they blend into the background. Not today. Maybe you heard a powerful, fierce splash, like something smacking violently against the water, or maybe it was the unnerving croak that echoed from deep below, but something has clearly gotten trapped in the well. Sometimes, there’s the distinct sound of something clawing, scratching, climbing–desperate to get out. The noise its making is deep enough to vibrate through the ground. If you go to investigate, you’ll see nothing but a pair of golden, snakelike eyes staring back up at you. Whatever it is, its body is completely submerged under the water, but just looking into its eyes is enough to petrify someone. There’s something hypnotic about it, something that seems like it’s drawing you into the well. And why shouldn’t you climb in? What’s stopping you? Danger is forgotten; the creature in the well has made a target of you. Hopefully you have someone to pull you out of the trance–or, maybe if you’re strong enough, you can do it yourself. If you lose the battle with the creature, you will fall unconscious just as you hit the water in the well; you will feel the sensation of something coiling around you, crushing you, and then–blackness. You will wake up in a hospital with a day lost and no memory of what happened in the well, or how you were pulled out. You only have bumps and bruises, and when you close your eyes you’re haunted by the chilling golden eyes in the well. If you return to it, you’ll find nothing but a strange, croaking echo.

Fang patrolled as silently as he always did. His ears rotated slowly, attempting to catch anything that sounded out of the ordinary—anyone that sounded like they needed help. Something was afoot tonight, he knew. It wasn't hard to know. There was something afoot every night. He just had to catch it happening, try to stop it, whatever evil prowled out here tonight, and he would. He had to. It was his job as a senshi.

His ears caught something, a scrap of sound that blew in on the soft breeze that caressed his fur. His head snapped around, facing the direction of it, ears perked, alert, every nerve on fire as he held very still and waited to see if he'd hear something again.

There. That was definitely something. Swiftly, he moved forward, leaping through the shadows and arriving at a park. He didn't see anything, not at first, but that didn't mean anything. Cautiously, he moved forward, ears straining towards the well that caught his attention.

He could have sworn he'd heard something from that.

Wells were a new concept that Procyon was looking into after the last few fountains he found were turned off at night. Since they seemed like some sort of storage thing, he hoped he could see about finding one and taking a look. The reservoir had been a bust during the summer and he'd been a little shy to go back and look again unless he had company. It made sense because who wanted to get pulled beneath the water and drowned?

Shaking his head as he wandered, avoiding others as he could so that he didn't get into any fights tonight, Procyon paused as he heard a splash. It sounded deep, echoing like something fell a far way before hitting the water. At least that meant he was going the right way, stepping out into the park and looking around for the source of the sound.

At first, he didn't see anything, at least not that he was sure what he was looking for, but then he saw a familiar senshi. "Oh! Fang!" Blurting out their name excitedly before he heard another splash and diverted his attention back to where he thought it was coming from. It was much closer this time but he very confused because he swore it sounded it like came from behind the bushes.

Fang jolted at the sound of his name, ears pricking in the direction of the shout a microsecond before his head swiveled to zero in on—oh, not a threat. A friend. His tail wagged slightly at the sight of Procyon, but stilled again almost immediately.

"Procyon," he greeted as he trotted over. "You hear strange thing, too? Sounds like... Someone stuck."

He tilted his head as he listened hard again. "Think in well? Like... Lassie?" he asked slowly, grasping at the "pop culture" reference he'd been taught some time ago. "Save them?"

"Yeah, really strange. I don't know what's going on, but I'm worried someone might be hurt. It almost sounded like someone fell or something fell into water but I can't figure out where." If Fang was here, though, at least he could have some help trying to find whoever or whatever was in trouble. He had a feeling they might be better at finding people, he always ended up being too short to see over a lot of the man-made structures and things. Most of the bushes blocked his view as well, something he'd sort of grown used to but wasn't sure if he liked.

The mention of Lassie had the grey sea bunny confused, and he tilted his head a bit as he tried to figure out what they meant. Was that the person's name? He'd have to ask Miss Illyria about that maybe when he got home. At least he could agree with the question about saving whoever might be in trouble.

"Yeah, if we can find them. I want to see if we can help them." Piping up a bit more as he straightened up, he moved closer to the other until he thought he heard something new. It wasn't a splash, not this time, so he wasn't sure if it was the same source or something else.

He listened closely as he thought he heard a different sound, almost like someone scrambling to get out of a body of water, he started looking around to see if he could find the well that Fang had mentioned.

"It sounds close, I think?" Looking back towards the trees and bushes, it didn't look like anything had moved or that anyone new had come up to make that sound.

Fang nodded to Procyon—he seemed like he had the right idea. He rotated his ears slowly, shifting them bit by bit to try to capture where exactly the sound was coming from. It was difficult, at first, because the sound echoed within the well (assuming he was right about that, anyway). But eventually, he located it and strode confidently in the correct direction, gesturing for Procyon to follow. The sounds grew closer and he force himself to walk faster, until he was sprinting the last couple of feet to the mouth of the well, crashing into it and staring down inside it.

It seemed empty at a glance, but the sounds persisted and he knew it was just an illusion of the night, of the way the walls of the well seemed to close in. He shivered—he normally was okay with enclosed spaces, but chrysocyon built their dens above ground regardless. So the well frightened him. But whoever or whatever was stuck at the bottom of it needed help.

Then he blinked, and the darkness seemed to dissolve. He saw a pair of golden eyes. For a moment, his heart lurched. Was it a chrysocyon? He couldn't quite see, still. The creature's body seemed all the way underwater at the bottom, except for the eyes.

He should help. Sluggishly, mindlessly, he began to lift a leg over the lip of the well.

Following Fang along, he kept an eye out for anyone else coming closer who might cause trouble. It had been happening more and more often, so he wanted to make sure nobody got the jump on either of them.

With the other sprinting, he hurried up even though his smaller stature made it difficult to run as fast and cover as much ground as they could. But he did manage to catch up just as soon as he saw the other leaning into the well, looking like they were going to fall in.

"Oh! Fang! Be careful!" He heard something unsettling from the well and grabbed the senshi firmly by the back of their jacket. Pulling them back, he saw over their shoulder a pair of eyes in the well and knew it wasn't someone looking for help.

"Oh... that's not a civilian." Mumbling as he pulled again to get them to stop climbing into the well. "I don't think you should go in there."

Fang's trance broke the moment Procyon pulled him away, stumbling and shaking his head violently. His ears flapped with the force of it before he stabilized and pinned them back instead, giving the well a wary look.

"Fang think we go home," he said shrewdly. "Not good. Not safe. Trick. Thank, Procyon. Save Fang's life."
