Quote: Mothmask (6) : There are eyes in the darkness of every forest, staring at you. Between one blink and the next, they disappear, only to reappear somewhere in the trees. Sometimes it’s one, sometimes it’s many. The faces are almost human; you can see the hollow of the eye, a narrow nose, and an eerie, toothy grin. It’s inhuman–and terrifying. No matter where you go, there are always faces outside, watching you. No tree is safe. It feels like being followed by horrifying ghouls–and what’s with the strange, raspy laughter coming from the depths of the forest? Fear is a powerful tool, but maybe if you’re just a little brave you can get close enough to better see what monsters are stalking you. You can find dark moths with strange, humanesque features painted on their wings. They are roughly the size of a basketball and, upon close inspection, seem mostly harmless. Except, if you stay too close to them, the face on their wings change–to yours. The moths cannot be caught and will always fly away, fleeing into the darkness, but it’s still unnerving. Especially if other people start to see your face staring back at them from the darkness with that uncomfortable, raspy laughter. Sasha had seen them once but that wasn't really enough. Looking over the pictures that Ian had sent him, he wanted to see if he could maybe get closer this time to touch one maybe. So again, he snuck out but was careful not to step where the floors creaked. Instead of using the door, because he knew it would be loud enough to wake the other, he went out through the small window over the sink. It was a tight fit, even with how small he was, but he was out into the night air and quickly running through the grass. Once he cleared the property, he took his pen out and powered up so that he had shoes and also so that he could hurry it up a bit more before the other woke and noticed he was gone. If he got back before they woke up it would be fine, but only if he didn't get into any other trouble again. That would mean a move and he was still getting used to things here. The place he saw the moths last wasn't too far, only about fifteen minutes of walking at his quick pace. Reaching the tree line, he stopped for a moment to catch his breath and leaned on one of the trees. The smaller moths were out again, more this time than the last but maybe that was because the weather had changed. It was warmer tonight than the other night, he'd been able to get out without grabbing a coat and scarf. His antennae twitched slightly as he watched them all, not heading in just yet as he didn't want to disturb them.

Okay, so. Lanting was not, per se, having the best night. He'd decided to walk the edge of the woods, in case of nonsense there, and he'd....found....nonsense.
The kind of nonsense that was "things staring at him in the woods," and also "terrifying creepy laughter coming from the woods."
Why. Why why why was Destiny City the type of place that had seasonally appropriate nonsense. Frankly, Lanting wanted to be at home, sitting in Belle's lap, arguing with anti-woke chuds on Reddit who thought Dragon Age: The Veilguard including top surgery scars was the downfall of modern gaming. Alas, he was a Knight, and he would do his duty, and his duty meant....trying to figure out what the hell this was, probably.
He new there was someone else nearby, and maybe at one point he would have taken that as enough and booked it, but....no. Not tonight. Tonight, he looked around, and his eyes fell on the Senshi--and were drawn to his little twitching antennae.
Oh!!
He was very quiet about moving closer, lest he disturb whatever was in the woods, and very politely lightly tapped the Senshi's shoulder.
"Hi," he said, voice low, "I'm Lanting. You're not from around here, are you?"
Probably rude. Oh well.

For a moment he thought he had spotted the big one, the one that had maybe borrowed his face and freaked Ian out. Focusing and squinting, he was searching for it and hadn't heard anyone coming up until something touched his shoulder. "Bwah!" Jumping and turning, the small senshi was surprised by the person in front of them. They didn't feel evil, but he was still a bit startled as he held his hands up ready to try punching. At least that was the plan until he noticed the attractive little flowers on them. They looked appetizing but if they were on something the person was holding... that would be stealing right? And Julienne told him that wasn't something people did on this planet. "Mmm... Erinome." Deciding maybe by answering that he might get to taste those plants. At least if they were introduced maybe it would be like when Ian gave him snacks and fruit right? Just sharing food with a friend?

"Sorry, sorry!" Lanting apologized, quickly, when he realized he must have startled this poor alien. "I didn't mean to scare you." But of course he had, he'd practically snuck up on the poor thing. How ridiculous of him.
"Hi, Erinome. Do you know what's laughing in the woods?" He wasn't sure if the Senshi wasn't talkative, if he couldn't talk much, or if he felt run over by Lanting's excessive motormouth. Any of these things felt equally possible. So, he was just....going to ask the question....and then shut the ******** up and see what happened.
He could totally do that.

Lowering his hands, since they were apologizing, he righted his hat since it had shifted and was bothering his antennae now. The mention of laughing had him confused, tilting his head slightly as he looked at them. He'd heard some other sounds from the forest but he figured it had been other people or other creatures since he had no idea about a lot of the things on this planet. Insects, that he knew, and he liked them quite a bit. There was an understanding with them and he always felt bag when people bothered them here which seemed to be a norm. Blinking for a moment, after getting lost in his train of thought, he pulled his phone out and showed them the fuzzy picture of the gigantic moth. It was from before it had borrowed his face, showing how big the thing was as it hung on the tree. "Moth... but not me?" And he did want to look at it more to see if it still was trying to mimic him or if maybe it looked like someone or something else now. "Defensive." Nodding as he wondered if the laughing sound was some sort of thing to spook people away from the forest, he could understand that at least. Now things like property and money... that was something he was still trying to figure out.

Ohhh, okay, well, that made a lot of sense, Lanting supposed, squinting at the fuzzy picture of the odd creature. Weird moths with strange camouflage abilities, maybe magic, maybe not. That felt....almost too reasonable, all things considered.
"I gotcha," Lanting nodded. "So they're just trying to protect their home, probably because we dumb people crash through it and cause problems." Yeah, okay, it was all very Ferngully, but he'd take Ferngully over some kind of Fatal Frame thing where the weird magic moths were a herald for some kind of awful...evil....Lanting didn't even want to guess.
"Thanks for telling me," he said. "Are you alright on your own? I can stay and look out for you, or I can leave you alone to do...adorable...moth...things...." It sounded silly when he said it, but he didn't mean it as anything but a statement of fact.

Oh... he didn't like the sound of that, that people just crashed through and bothered the moths. It showed on his face as he tucked his phone away and looked back towards the forest where more of the smaller ones were heading in. He did want to go but if there were other things, Ian would worry but when they mentioned coming along, well that solved one issue. "Mmmm yes, a friend?" The mention about being adorable was a bit odd though, was it like cute was? That was the word Ian had used and he had figured it described Ian as well. At least he thought it was related to people who liked each other but maybe it was broader than that? Words were hard here even though he'd figured out a bit more about how people spoke over the past few months. Looking back down at their stick, wrapped in vines and flowers, he wondered if he could sneak a bite if they went ahead. "Up ahead, close." Pointing through the opening in the treeline where the smaller moths were heading.

Lanting supposed it made sense that a Senshi with such mothy features might be of the nature-loving variety, so he wasn't exactly surprised to see Erinome frown at his description of humans' clumsy treatment of the natural world.
Still, he did brighten. "Yeah, friends," he said, perhaps a little too excitedly. This magic thing was doing wonders for his social life, it really was incredible. He'd had so few friends before, and now he was actually making them pretty regularly.
Also, the boyfriend. The boyfriend was nice.
He nodded when Erinome pointed, turning his attention to the trees. Apparently,t hey were going to go look closer, and frankly, he was kind of curious about these weird laughing moths. "Okay, show me the way."

Letting them pass him, he brushed his hand over the flowers and vines on their stick thingy and swiped a flower with a bit of vine attached. Stepping ahead, so he could snack on it without being seen much, he nibbled on the purple flower. It tasted... well floral but not like any he'd tried before on his planet. Still not as good as the flowers with thorns on the property he and Ian lived on but at least these weren't spikey. "This way." Piping up just a bit so they could hear, he tried not to talk with his mouth full of flower. Up above, the moths that were fluttering around were getting bigger in size as they both headed in. "Many moths... not sure why." He wasn't really sure why they were here instead of somewhere else but maybe he'd figure it out tonight or at some point. Unless it was something that needed to be figured out during the day time, it wasn't relly easy for him to be awake when the sun was up.

Probably if Lanting were a slightly better Knight, he would have paid more attention to his weapon--but he assumed the small tug he felt was it catching on something in the woods, and when the tug didn't last for more than a moment, he ignored it. He was far more interested in what was around them--the bigger and bigger moths, which was a little creepy, but also a little cool.
Even, he swore, the part where they seemed to have. Faces. And even though that creeped him right the ******** out, he decided to keep that to himself and try to enjoy the weird, unique nature of these creatures.
"Maybe...there's some kind of food here they like? A plant they're congregating around?" What did moths eat? Lanting realized he didn't know, other than....like...clothes, apparently.

"Mulberry?" That's what he knew the silk moths ate because Ian thought maybe it might be something he would like alongside the fruits and juices they'd gotten for him. But looking around he didn't see it, instead he saw them hanging around one older-looking tree that didn't look so well. The wood was rotted in places and there was a huge split as if the thing was torn from a lightning strike. Stepping forward and towards all the moths, he scrunched his face up as he reached out. "Hello." It was softer than he'd spoken to Lanting so he didn't spook the moths off this time as he looked over all the weird patterns they had. A few scattered and then he saw some of them had different faces on them, it really was odd to see but it didn't really scare him. Turning his head to look back at Lanting as a few of the bigger ones landed on his arm, he couldn't help but smile. "See friends?... no bite." He felt pretty good about these odd moths even if Ian had said they were dangerous.

"Maybe," Lanting acknowledged, though it was hard to be certain. His eyes drifted over the variety of creatures before them, all absolutely massive but seeming more interested in avoiding him and Erinome than in bothering anyone.
Honestly, if he ignored the creepy face patterns on their wings and decided that it was just Very Good Natural Camouflage, they really were kind of...cute?
"They seem very friendly," he agreed. He actually felt pretty lucky, getting to see something like this.
Even if the face on a large moth near him seemed to be shifting. To something that looked a lot like him.
...Creepy, but totally harmless, right?

At least someone agreed with him, which was good. It was hard to find so far since he really didn't know much about this planet but he did know about moths, even if these were smaller than the ones he remembered from the past. "Yes, want to visit again." At least as long as they were around here, he knew that because they were smaller, that they didn't live as long as some other creatures and insects. It bothered him but he knew that things were different here and that there were so many more insects to replace the ones that were gone. He really wished they would journey towards his home so he could see them but he knew this was where they liked to live. "Can go now. Add friend?" Watching as the moth on his arm left, heading up towards the higher branches, he pulled his senshi phone out and tried to remember how things worked again. Worst case, maybe they had a better idea about it than he did. At least he was sure Ian would be glad to hear that he met someone else out here so that they didn't have to worry about him wandering off and getting in trouble alone tonight.
