Saewulf wasn't a baby anymore, but his parents still didn't think he should be by the ocean by himself; which honestly he didn't think was fair, he was a really good swimmer! But the tidal pools, in the middle of the day, were ok as long as he didn't go too far. The rocks were warm under his bare feet as he tiptoed around the water, eyes peeled for piplits.
His mom hadn't liked when he brought home a handful of sirenn's, finding their shells strewn about in his wardrobe. But if he was careful, he could keep a few piplits in a water jug in his and Seathra's room! It was a great idea!

Mid-day was always an odd time for Mina. As much as she preferred the warmth of the morning sun on her skin her long nights had kept her from it for most of her stay in Matori. Up until now she wouldn't have dreamed to be outside before evening at the earliest, but ever since the incident...Well, she'd decided to switch things up a bit.
And the best thing for a fresh start was a fresh state of mind! The Hapuna had dressed herself in proper swimming attire and met the day with the dawn, choosing to spend the majority of her time either sunbathing or exploring the coast. And when she got too tired for that Mina made her way to the tidepools. She was keen on finding a place to nap, but the site of a sort of familiar face stopped her.
Sort of being she knew this child was somehow related to Nin, but not exactly how or even why they were milling about on their own. Earthling children weren't exactly the most stable at the best of the times, let alone in the water. "Did you lose something?"

... He wasn't a baby anymore, yes, but that didn't stop him from jolting with a splash. The look he shot the adult, once he recognized them, was fauxly innocent. He... vaguely recognized them, but in the sort of way a child does when they have a large family with many friends. Enough to know they weren't a danger, but not enough to really... know who they were.
This lady stood out though - bright and golden, and he immediately felt shy and awed. "No! Uh - I'm just..." He cast his eyes around, thinking of an excuse that wouldn't, somehow, make its way back to his mom. "... Swimming?"

Mina couldn't help it; she laughed! It wasn't as if he were injured or at risk so there was no point in hiding it. When the mirth trickled out of her voice she was left with a smile that warmed her nearly as much as the sun. "Swimming? In the tide pools? You should go to the reef for that."
She motioned with a nod of her head to the water beyond.

She was laughing at him!!! Saewulf puffed out his cheeks, offended but also relieved. Sometimes, adults didn't like it when kids lied so... did she know he wasn't being honest, or did she just think he was dumb?
He'd be ok with that, if it meant she didn't tattle to his parents. "Yeah... yeah, I'm not s'posed to without uh. Without someone to watch me?" He tried, weakly. Sae really wasn't a good liar.

"So you snuck away, huh?" Mina found a little plot of mostly flat stones to sit down on and once she was comfy the Hapuna stretched her legs out to get some sun. "I should take you back to your parents. What if they're looking for you? You wouldn't want to make them worry."
And yet...Mina looked down into the tide pools. "But maybe...since you have someone to watch you we can stay for a little while longer. So long as when it's time to head back you don't fuss. Okay?"

Saewulf ducked his head a little, chastened, but peeked back up at the hapuna with open surprise. She'd let him stay? It sounded like a good deal, but he wondered if she'd take the time to lecture him about 'not making people worry'. So he was suspicious, but grinned and nodded eagerly. "Okay! I won't, I promise. Thank you auntie!"
It seemed a safe enough title, considering he had no idea just how this person knew his family. After a moment, he stooped back into a crouch and peered at the tidal pools. "I wanted a baby piplet but - I only saw the BIG ones."

Auntie? Mina had only ever heard the word used in two ways; either for an actual Aunt or an older woman. And she...she didn't look that old, did she?! All of that sun in Oba really DID dry out my skin! She would have to look into buying better face oils and maybe some of those powders, the kind the nobles used...
"What's a piplet?" Maybe if she offered to help look he wouldn't think she was so old.

Unaware of the crisis he'd inadvertantly sent Mina into, Saewulf continued perusing the pools. He was surprised when she showed interest, eyes brightening as he turned his attention back to her. "They're fish! But they have li'l snoots-" He mimed with his hand at the front of his face, practically bouncing with excitement. "And tails and - and they start small, but get HUGE--" Again, he spread his arms wide for emphasis.

Her smile only grew as she watched him. There was just something utterly precious about seeing a child get that excited over anything and when it was something she was also that just made it better.
"Woah! That's massive!" She gasped dramatically and brought her hands up to her face. "Are they a scary fish or a friendly one? If you find a big one and they're mean then that could get really bad really fast." Not that she couldn't handle the situation, but Mina would hate to think about him coming back, poking around again and becoming something's meal.

"Uh, friendly?" Saewulf announced somewhat bossily. Then, remembering his manners, he gave himself a little shake and added, in a more polite tone, "And that's why I'm gettin' a little one, so I can grow it and it'll like me. And a little one fits in my room."

"So...since you're bringing it home...I'm guessing your parents don't know about it?" She rested her elbows on her knees, propped her head up on her hands and smirked. Sneaky little ******** hit enter too soon)
It fit the bill, considering everything else the child had done so far, and really Mina couldn't find fault in it. She'd done much worse to her parents when she was little that bringing home a wild animal would have been the least of their concerns.

Oh. Oops? He'd been way too obvious. Mumbling under his breath, Saewulf turned away from her grinning face, all the more eager to FIND a piplet before the lady decided she'd waited too long. She might want to go sooner, now that she knew he was being sneaky.
"I can take care of it! How'm I s'posed to prove I can if no one lets me?" He complained, when his silence became too difficult to hold anymore. Heaving a sigh, Saewulf tiptoed to a further pool and stopped, blinking. Then a grin split his face and he bounced again, pointing and shooting looks back at Mina. "Look! There's some babies - see? See?"

Hearing him was like listening to a younger version of herself. 'I can do it! How am I supposed to know I won't win if you don't let me try?!' It's what kept her rooted in her spot for so long, keeping an eye on the situation and surrounding area instead of just putting an end to things. He was fine, seemed to know what he was doing and honestly? She wanted him to succeed.
"Oh! You found some?" Slipping off of her rock, the petite Hapuna picked her way closer and knelt close to his side. She gasped, this time for real, and looked on in awe of the little beauties. "They're so cool. Which one are you going to try to catch?"

It was cool, to have an adult sit and let him talk. It wasn't that his siblings didn't let him, it's just - there were so many in his family, that attention wasn't really easy to KEEP to himself. Where he'd been wary of her at first, now he found himself preening, beaming at her when she enthused about how cool they were. Because they were! SO cool!!
At her question though he looked at the little beans again, squinting thoughtfully. The little fish swished about in the pools, tiny fins on their backs fluttering, curled lightly spiked tails tucked under them. But they were so little he felt it'd be harder to catch just one, and what if he hurt them?
Besides, there were so many colors - some were ruddy brown and dull, others were flecked with lighter pinks and oranges. It was hard to choose? "Mmm... what color d'you think would swim fastest?" He wondered aloud.
