Mothmask (6) : There are eyes in the darkness of every forest, staring at you. Between one blink and the next, they disappear, only to reappear somewhere in the trees. Sometimes it’s one, sometimes it’s many. The faces are almost human; you can see the hollow of the eye, a narrow nose, and an eerie, toothy grin. It’s inhuman–and terrifying. No matter where you go, there are always faces outside, watching you. No tree is safe. It feels like being followed by horrifying ghouls–and what’s with the strange, raspy laughter coming from the depths of the forest? Fear is a powerful tool, but maybe if you’re just a little brave you can get close enough to better see what monsters are stalking you. You can find dark moths with strange, humanesque features painted on their wings. They are roughly the size of a basketball and, upon close inspection, seem mostly harmless. Except, if you stay too close to them, the face on their wings change–to yours. The moths cannot be caught and will always fly away, fleeing into the darkness, but it’s still unnerving. Especially if other people start to see your face staring back at them from the darkness with that uncomfortable, raspy laughter.

Ian had warned Sasha about this time of year, telling him at length about the dangers which came with the fall. The darker months of the year, fall and winter, always brought with it magical problems for the city. Some things were harmless, as he’d told Sasha, but other things were far from it. You never knew what you were getting into, though some people did talk about it or you could find some things online, but there were always things going on.

It was because of this that Ian had told Sasha that if they wanted to go out at night, for whatever reason, he would be joining them. It could be the most innocent of walks, not gathering any plant life, but he would be there because he didn’t trust things in this city.

That was why Ian was bundled up, with a scarf about his face, and his hands were stuffed into the pockets of his coat. He was walking alongside Sasha as he kept his eyes out for anything which might happen - he didn’t trust things. There was a hope that nothing would go wrong…but he also knew not to trust this city one bit. They had been looking at houses, ones with decent size yards, but so far nothing had happened as far as finding a place or moving - nothing. Maybe one with some woods in the backyard would be good for Sasha? That way he wouldn’t be walking with them to the woods.

Sasha was happy to be in another piece of Ian’s clothing, the warm coat he wore came down to his knees as he trudged forward to explore more of the forested area near the edges of what was considered safe. Ian still came along which he was both happy for and a bit sad about, they were staying up late to spend time with him. It was something he appreciated but he could see that it left them tired in the mornings.

Keeping close while slowly venturing between the trees and foliage, he noticed moths floating by. Some were small but as he followed them slowly he noticed some larger ones. “Oh… moths! Ian like me!” Turning back to look at them, he pointed towards a rather large one up on a tree out of his reach. The thing was larger than his head but was hard to see in the shadow of the branch it hung from.

Following close behind, not wanting to lose sight of the other, Ian kept close while letting the other have his space to chase the moths that were dancing about in the air. So many and some so big he had to wonder if it was natural, he doubted anything which seemed odd in this city, he was closer now because he wasn’t so sure it was all safe. But he didn’t want to alert or bother the other, didn’t want to worry him, as he stood there watching the other enjoy the fluttering creatures that were the same as him, “I see, and I know…you do enjoy moths. We don’t see them often and certainly not like these.”

Something felt off about this place in general, like they were being watched, he didn’t like it but he was determined not to say anything and ruin things for Sasha. Biting his lip he was certain he even heard something…a deep sort of laughter, like you might hear from an older person or a heavy smoker. It had a rasp to it but he could be mistaken, he could easily be mistaken, but he wasn’t so sure really.

“If you want we can look for them online tomorrow, see if we can figure out what type of moths these are. They’re big so we shouldn’t have a hard time finding a species which can get this big.” He imagined it would be easy, if they were normal. He suspected they weren’t though….but he’d look with Sasha anyway - just in case.

Reaching out to touch some of the smaller ones, they fluttered and landed on his outstretched hand. They were the small ones though, the big one seemed to shift and move but make no motion to leave the shadow. Standing on tiptoes, he looked closer at the large dangling moth and saw odd spots and marks on their wings. It reminded him sort of the one he had on his back but they were a lot more realistic looking.

“This one… a face?” Tilting his head, his antennae jittered curiously as he pondered the thing. It was spooky but he never really feared his kind. “Phone picture?” Looking back at the other in hopes they’d be able to get a better one since they were taller than he was. He figured it might help them look up what kind of moth the big one was. The little ones were content to just sit on his hat as he reached for a few others, wondering if they liked him because they felt like he was familiar to them in a way.

Hearing an odd sound, he looked around as he stilled, not sure if something was going to pop out or if the tree would try and get him again. Just in case, he took a step or two away from the tree and towards Ian. A few of the moths fluttered away but nothing else seemed to move so he didn’t worry too much.

Stepping closer at the others words, wanting to keep him safe in case something went wrong, Ian settled a hand on the others shoulder slowly - gently. “Yeah…phone.” He answered in a rather blank manner, while pulling out of his phone and offering it to the other. “Here, take a picture.” He was certain this didn’t seem normal, because he saw it also. It looked like a face…and it became clearer the longer he was staring at the large moth.

Moving his hands to the others waist he picked Sasha up, so he could take the picture of the moth, he was glad the other was as light as they were. “I don’t think this is normal for a moth…” He whispered, cautious of this, he was looking around for anything else which might happen. Would the other moths attack them somehow?

Tapping through their phone, he pulled the camera up and went to snap a picture of the big moth. It fluttered its wings and then when the flash happened a second time it decided that the place it had been resting wasn’t peaceful anymore. Taking flight, it flew past Sasha and over towards another one of the trees. Blinking and wiggling to be put down, he looked at the photos.

“Oh… not good.” Holding the phone so the other could see it, the first photo showed some sort of humany face but the second one showed a face that almost looked like his. He looked over to the moth as a few other small ones decided to follow it. “Stole my face…” It didn’t really sit well with him but it wasn’t like the thing attacked him.

“Maybe not defensive…” Speaking with a bit of confusion, he was surprised that the moth wasn’t acting like the others.

Letting the other down he took a moment to look over the two pictures. “Yeah…that’s a lot creepy. I thought I saw its wings starting to look like a face, I suppose it just didn’t get time to settle for looking like me.” He whispered, glancing towards the damn creepy thing. “We should get moving…I’m not certain I’m liking the woods tonight.” He might like to wander about the city, or somewhere…anywhere but here, as he looked to Sasha and hoped for their agreement.

“I’m pretty sure those wings changed in look - which isn’t normal. It didn’t look like your face when I was looking at it. That’s not possible…” Not naturally anyway, meaning magic of some sort was involved.

“I’ll take you to a museum to venture tomorrow if you want.”

“Okay somewhere else.” As much as he wanted to look for other moths, he knew that the big one was odd and Ian didn’t like it. “Museum and fruit.” Since if he was going to be up when the sun was out he’d need the extra snacks to be more awake.

Nodding he looked up where the moth had moved and caught a glimpse of the stolen face, it was unsettling but not as much as it unsettled Ian. “Odd moth.” If it were one of the things that lingered temporarily that would be okay, not that most moths on this planet lingered for long. It made him a bit sad but he knew that was how things worked for smaller insects and creatures.
