The Gargoyles (3) : Even when you thought you’d seen the last of them, it seems like you’re never really in the clear. A while back, there was an infestation of awful gargoyle creatures–and while every Star Festival had its fair share of oddities, this one seems to have introduced a permanent infestation upon the city. Maybe you see them perched on the roof, or hiding in the shadows, but not all of these grotesque creatures are satisfied with just escaping their interdimensional prison–some of them still have a bone to pick. They seem stony; some of them will watch with a penetrative gaze and never strike to attack, but some of them will dive down to target anyone who gets too close. The monsters come in an array of sizes and shapes, but they are no more than half the size of their target. Their goal is uncertain, but they will crumble into a pile of rocks and dust if struck hard enough.

This RP can be used as a battle requirement as long as there are at least two powered characters involved; you must be interacting with another player’s powered character and cannot solo this with two of your own characters. This does not count as the ‘one youma battle’ per stage for growth. This can only be used as a battle requirement once per character, but there is no limitation for how many times a player can use this prompt.

”You think they’d look less creepy if they had holiday decorations on?” Ekstrom asked, a silly little smile on her face as she glanced away from a gargoyle statue and over at Belmont. She’d texted him earlier on that week to discreetly arrange for a patrol night, so they met up as agreed and were making a round through a fancier part of the city via the rooftops. She could swear the gargoyle statues they quickly came across on one of the taller buildings were new installs, maybe to welcome the Halloween season?

They were eerie all the same, and she wasn’t a fan. Still, it was amusing to think about.

“Santa Claus hats, maybe?” she giggled, “Or reindeer antlers and a bright red nose?”

The sound of grinding stone cut her giggle short, and glancing back over she found herself suddenly staring face to face with one of the gargoyles. Flickering her gaze just beyond it, its brethren also seemed to be coming to life.

Belmont squinted up at the gargoyles mistrustingly when Ekstrom asked.

No, he thought they’d just look like creepy gargoyles with holiday decorations on, and in Santa hats or otherwise the thought would have been laughable. The statues were pretty unnerving and he suspected they’d stay that way no matter how someone tried to doll them up.

And why would anyone want to, anyway? Those things looked like they could spring to life at any point in time, and he’d had enough of worrying about what statues were actually monsters out for blood.

The universe might have thought differently, though.

Before he could even laugh or share his thoughts with Ekstrom, the gargoyles were moving. And they were already too close for comfort.

Instinctively, Belmont moved closer to her. He gripped the hilt of his weapon tightly, obviously ready to attack if need be. He wasn't optimistic that this was going to be something they just walked away from.

More than one seemed to be coming alive, and the sound of stone against stone made it difficult to tell just how many there were, and where they were. It made his teeth hurt so he grimaced as his eyes flicked to all that he could see.

“...Still think you'd like to see them all dressed up?”

She froze for a moment, not even daring to breathe as the gargoyle directly in front of her continued to stare. Not that it had a choice–for all intents and purposes, it was still a statue. Feeling Belmont’s aura move closer was a small comfort, and at his question she shook her head as subtly as she could.

“Not sure I wanna see these things ever again after this,” she said, eyes flickering to the other statues before going back to the one right in her face. She gripped her shield and took a step back to put a bit of space between her and the statue in case it did anything more than stare.

It didn’t like that.

Ekstrom had only taken two steps back when it lunged at her. She barely had time to put her shield up before she felt the impact of its attack, which knocked her right on her a**.

Its brethren soon followed suit, all turning in unison and launching themselves one after the other at the two Squires.

Belmont’s first instinct was to hurl himself at the nearest gargoyle, like he might have been able to shove it away from her and knock it off balance.

He should have expected it was going to feel like side-tackling a rock.

Despite his best effort, he didn’t think he had much of an impact beyond pressing the air from his lungs, so after a brief, “Oof,” he half-stumbled to get back on his feet.

The weapon was definitely going to be a better idea, and he reeled his arm back before thrashing the chain whip at one of the gargoyles coming in from Ekstrom’s side.

He could feel the contact vibrate through the hilt and his whole hand tingled. “You okay?”

The gargoyles were thankfully not as sturdy as they looked, at least not against a proper weapon. Belmont’s attack with his whip was enough to cause his target to crumble, buying Ekstrom enough time to scramble back onto her feet and out of the way of another flying gargoyle.

“Just barely,” she managed to say before turning to smack this new gargoyle with her shield, driving it into the ground with enough strength that it, too, cracked and crumbled. Thank goodness for superhuman strength, she thought with a little sigh of relief. Looking back up, she saw that the other gargoyles, rather than blindly attacking, were now moving in a circle around them. It felt like they were at the center of some kind of freakish ritual, which put the Squire on edge, and she moved closer to Belmont.

“What do you think? Run or fight?

Run? Run?

He gave her a look that made his decision obvious, but it was only a place holder until he could get some actual words in. There were too many of him to be loose-lipped, and it wasn’t until he managed to split one gargoyle in two and grab another around the middle with his weapon that he managed to actually speak.

“If we leave, I think they’d just find someone else. Better us than them, right?”

At least they could handle it.

Belmont’s whip wasn’t always the easiest to maneuver but over the years it felt like an extension of himself. He couldn’t always predict what his opponent was doing but he did have a fairly good idea of what the whip was, at least.

He would have looked at her if he wasn’t sure it would open him up for attack, but with her back to his he was sure that they were at least well-guarded in all their weak points.

“We should take out as many as we can. If we try to run, I think we’d just be too vulnerable. Unless you think we need to go. I trust you.”

She kind of had a feeling what his answer would be, but she had to ask. He wasn’t wrong, of course, so she didn’t question it even if he couldn’t really use his words right away. He chipped away at two while Ekstrom continued eyeing them from where she stood–a detriment to having a close-combat sort of weapon while her partner had a ranged one.

“Right,” she said, giving a nod just as a gargoyle took its chance. With as much strength as she could muster, she raised her shield and swung down, sending the thing straight into the ground where it cracked and broke into large, now perfectly still, chunks.

“No, you’re probably right. If you can give them hell with your storm, we could probably run in with that as cover, take them out one at a time that way?”

Ekstrom had more faith in Belmont than he had in himself, and he wasn’t exactly one short of self-confidence. He didn’t know if his storm was enough to damage stone but they didn’t have a lot of options and her idea was the best one they had.

He afforded himself only a few seconds to weigh their options and then nodded. “Yeah,” he agreed.

“Okay, good plan. Stay close,” he insisted, probably pointlessly, because he really had no intention of straying far from her side under these conditions.

His weapon was light in his hand so he held it tightly. Once more, he drew back the flail and slammed the ball down on the nearest gargoyle. The thunder echoed so loudly he thought he heard it in his teeth.

But, that was a good sign. He hoped the gargoyles heard it louder. He hoped it cracked the very foundation of their stone and left them crumbled messes.

…He didn’t have a lot of time to actually watch for the effects–Ekstrom had presented a plan and he was going to do his best to abide by it.

Quote:
Squire Magic: A fierce storm erupts in a six foot radius around him. Wind and rain buffet all of those in the area, excluding himself and allies. The wind is strong enough to knock people off balance and the rain is cold and can make it difficult to see. The sound of faint thunder can be heard. The effects exist only within the stationary radius however players can choose to remain wet for some time after the magic ends.

She nodded, though like him had no intention of getting too far away from him either. Being outnumbered usually meant staying close together was the safer bet, or at least that’s how she saw it.

With a plan set, she followed Belmont’s lead into the fray. As soon as he swung his chain she pulled her focus–gritting her teeth through a very loud crack of thunder as she did–and summoned her forcefield, watching and hoping that the stone creatures would react how she hoped once the glitchy blue edge passed through them.

They froze for a split second, to her relief, so while Belmont’s storm raged she did her best to pulse her forcefield–dismissing it as soon as it passed through the gargoyles, bashing her shield into one, and then resummoning it almost immediately afterward to do the same thing over again. It caused the gargoyles to stutter, almost, in their movements.

Squire Magic — Ekström holds her shield out as if using it to defend herself. Upon focusing, a forcefield materializes from her shield and surrounds her and anyone within 10 feet of her. The forcefield is light blue and glitchy in appearance. She has a magic pool of 40 seconds. For the duration of her casting, the forcefield can either absorb or reflect (which one it does is up to her at the time of casting) all magical effects up to her rank. It can lessen the damage of third stage magic but has no effect on fourth stage magic. Reflected magic is only as strong as basic level magic if it does hit someone (she has no control over the direction the magic is reflected). She cannot reflect third or fourth stage magic. Individuals are able to touch and/or pass through the forcefield, however enemies that do will feel as though something inside their body is short circuiting, causing mildly sharp pains to run through their entire body. For a few seconds moving becomes a little bit uncomfortable. Magic is unaffected and unhindered within the forcefield.

There weren’t enough gargoyles to stand up to their combined magic. One by one, the gargoyles cracked, shattered. Belmont kept his eyes open for any of them that were trying to escape but in their rage it seemed like they’d all charged at once.

So, they’d all crumbled together.

He didn’t lower his guard until several seconds after everything stopped moving around them, and even then he still seemed ready for the gargoyles to suddenly piece themselves back together and strike again.

“…I don’t see any of them moving,” he said cautiously, unwilling to jinx it. “...Did you see any get away?”

Ekstrom shook her head, first at his statement, and then at his question.

“I think we got them all,” she said, sounding cautious, not to mention winded, as she scanned the immediate area. Small piles of rubble and debris littered the space, and true enough there wasn’t a moving gargoyle statue in sight. That was enough to get her to relax, however slightly, and she lowered her shield.

“We should probably go, though.” It was hard to tell if there was more in store for them here, but she really didn’t want to stick around to find out. “Just in case.”

Belmont skimmed the area once more, eyes darting to all high points and dark corners, just in case. He didn’t see anything but that didn’t mean there wasn’t more lurking out there. They’d done well against this wave but he’d burned through a bit of his magic and he might have been young and durable but he didn’t have infinite energy.

He nudged one of the rocky piles with his toe but when the debris just skipped across the floor without any other movement, he nodded.

“Just in case. Yeah, good call.”

They’d done their good deed for the night–and he really wanted to think that this was the worst of it. The only reason why he still felt uneasy was the adrenaline, no doubt, but he didn’t have any indication that there were more threats out here.

“...Will you judge me if I say all this fighting always makes me hungry? …I’m going to have to get something to eat before I head home. You wanna come?”

Ekstrom blinked curiously at her friend, surprise catching her first well before the amusement did. Before long she was grinning from ear to ear, and her lips were pursed as though she was fighting down the strongest urge to have a good laugh about the sudden mention of food.

“I wouldn’t judge you for doing anything,” she eventually said as she walked toward him, “not seriously, anyway. But sure, I could eat. I don’t think it’s a fight thing but more like an exercise thing? Eating after a good workout is always extra satisfying.”

After a final glance around at their good deed done for the night, she gave a final nod before turning back to Belmont.

“Lead the way?”
