Quote:
The Gargoyles (3) : Even when you thought you’d seen the last of them, it seems like you’re never really in the clear. A while back, there was an infestation of awful gargoyle creatures–and while every Star Festival had its fair share of oddities, this one seems to have introduced a permanent infestation upon the city. Maybe you see them perched on the roof, or hiding in the shadows, but not all of these grotesque creatures are satisfied with just escaping their interdimensional prison–some of them still have a bone to pick. They seem stony; some of them will watch with a penetrative gaze and never strike to attack, but some of them will dive down to target anyone who gets too close. The monsters come in an array of sizes and shapes, but they are no more than half the size of their target. Their goal is uncertain, but they will crumble into a pile of rocks and dust if struck hard enough.

This RP can be used as a battle requirement as long as there are at least two powered characters involved; you must be interacting with another player’s powered character and cannot solo this with two of your own characters. This does not count as the ‘one youma battle’ per stage for growth. This can only be used as a battle requirement once per character, but there is no limitation for how many times a player can use this prompt.

Rose ducked out of the way with a gasp.

Maybe she shouldn’t have walked home on her own. She knew how dangerous the city could be, but there was still a part of her just stubborn enough to think she should be able to handle herself, that wanted to act normal even if she could never quite be normal. Walking home on her own was a mark of pride or something. Other people did it, completely unaware of the oddities found within the city, so why couldn’t she?

She’d seen the gargoyle but initially thought nothing of it, figured it was someone’s seasonal yard decoration. Then it jumped from the roof and came after her. She’d had no choice but to power up in an attempt to defend herself from it.

“You’re no youma,” she mumbled to herself, dodging a swipe of its claws.

She couldn’t sense any chaos from it, but that left her with more questions than answers. What was it? Where had it come from? Were there more of them?

Once again, there was something strange going on in the city. While initially Lucien thought it lined up with various holiday seasons, he was beginning to wonder if perhaps the holidays were simply a coincidence. Or perhaps orchestrated in Earth’s ancient history to mask the strange goings on. Use superstition and miracles as ways to gaslight the normal population into believing it was just expected during these celebratory seasons.

He would have to research further. Could it be that the influx of monsters and mayhem could be related to the equinoxes and solstices? Perhaps phases of the moon?

With the moon’s particular spin to always be facing the Earth, its distance creating a very unique opportunity for solar eclipses, and use as an observational satellite, it was difficult to believe that it was all coincidence.

What had the Moon Kingdom done, all those millenia ago?

He’d been out looking for more instances of these strange occurrences when he stumbled across the young knight, being attacked by a creature, not born of Chaos.

“Are you injured?” he asked as he galloped across the street towards her, tail high and ears alert as he watched the creature regain its ground as it slid across the dew laden yard. “Could you assist me in trying to destroy it? I fear it would attack others if not,” he frowned, his tail swishing with agitation, hackles rising as the gargoyle turned its sights on them again.

After dodging once again, Rose used the monster’s momentary distraction as an opportunity to glance around, searching for the source of the voice. She expected a man, but saw none in the area, just a large, fluffy cat with a golden star on its forehead.

Oh!

Rose had seen Mauvians before, and she’d heard about them from her friends, but she hadn’t really had an opportunity to interact with one before.

“I’m okay!” she said, offering a grateful smile. The situation might not be ideal but that didn’t mean she couldn’t be friendly. “I don’t know where it came from or what it is. I’m not even sure we can get rid of it. I’ve never seen one before.”

The gargoyle looked between them, like it was trying to decide which of them to go after now that there were two of them to choose from. Eventually it lunged at Rose again, but she was prepared for it this time and managed to take a stab at it with the point of her spindle. It wouldn’t do much damage, but at least the force behind the blow seemed to knock the gargoyle off its guard.

“I have not come across any myself, but toppling it could prove effective,” Lucien suggested as he swished his tail once more, before following the gargoyle’s movements.

As the knight did her best to counter its attack, Lucien took a running leap to further shove the gargoyle off balance.

It seemed to let out a silent roar of rage as it crumpled against the trunk of a tree, cracks along its stoney body forming quickly across every surface from the impact.

“I do not yet understand these creatures’ motives, but their utilization falling into the wrong hands could be catastrophic.” Without a starseed, there might be no way to truly corrupt these creatures. But finding a way to use them against the general public could be just as bad.

“Once more!” he called to the knight as the gargoyle got up and lunged for her. He prepared to repeat the process, hoping it would be enough.

Rose grimaced. That the Negaverse had youma was bad enough. These creatures seemed like they could be just as dangerous—if not more so, since she couldn’t really sense anything from it and wouldn’t know how to track it. If she knew anything about the Negaverse it was to never underestimate the lengths they would go to get what they wanted. Using creatures like this definitely seemed like something they would do if given half the chance.

The next time the gargoyle lunged at her, Rose took several claws to the arm but managed to get close enough to wedge the tip of her spindle into one of the cracks that had formed along its body. She put all of her strength into it, widening the crack with the sound of splitting stone. The gargoyle shrieked once, leaking pebbles from various splits in the stone, before the cracks grew too wide for it to maintain its form.

It crumbled into a pile of rocks at her feet.

“Not so different from a youma when it goes out like that,” she said, nudging at the rocks with the toe of her shoe in case it was still somehow alive. Nothing happened, so she let out a sigh and let her guard down a bit.

She glanced briefly at her arm but deemed the scratches superficial enough not to worry over too much, then turned toward the Mauvian and said, “Thanks. I’m Rose, Page of Lysithea.”

Lucien watched, ready to pounce at a moment’s notice in case he needed to get the strange stone creature away from the Page.

Thankfully, she was able to get her bearings and the gargoyle crumbled into rocks at their feet. It was one more thing he would have to look into. Perhaps check the social media of his household to see if anything strange showed up, or if these incidents were being hidden.

He trotted over to her, glancing up to see if he could determine how her wounds were, but since she didn’t seem worried, he decided to weave himself between her legs as the name she offered drew some familiarity.

Although they had not met before, he was certain Rose was mentioned in conversation with Atticus and Elliot.

“I am Lucien. I believe you may know Ephesus?”
