The Call (1) : An unknown number calls you. Maybe you pick it up, maybe you don’t, but the message is the same–someone on the other line is warning you about something. They seem to have details that give credence to whatever they’re warning you about, but there’s something particularly unbelievable about it all–because, they sound like you. And they know things only you would know. And then, the line drops, and you’re left alone. If you try to call the number back, it’s been disconnected. If it was a prank, it was a good one. But, maybe there was something more to it.
Tonight felt weird for Abby.
At first she was feeling fine, then there was just this feeling of dread that took over when night rolled around, and she couldn't shake it. She tried watching tv, trying on the new clothes she bought, eating sweets...Nothing. She thought she was going to go crazy when the ringtone for her phone went off. Frowning, she reached a shaking hand over and grabbed her phone, wondering if she should answer the unknown caller. Deciding that it couldn't hurt, if only to the the caller that they had the wrong number, Abby picked up her phone and swiped her finger up on the green button to answer the call.
"H-Hello?"
"Well hello Aberdeen...."
What on Earth?
Who was this person?
"I-I'm sorry? Who are you?" and why do you sound like me?
".....You know who I am Abbbbbbyyyyyy." There was a haunting giggle. "I have some things to tell you. Would you like to listen?"
Abby rolled her eyes then, snorting with disbelief. "If I knew who you were then I would have given you a proper greeting dont you think? Since I in fact, do NOT know who you are, I suggest you delete my number and do not contact me again."
The voice over the phone was silent throughout her little tirade, uttering only one sentence: "Our mother is precious is she not?" That caused Abby to pale slightly with fear. What were they talking about? she does not have any other siblings, her mother wasnt capable of having children after her. "She's going to disappear, Abby....Our mother is going to die and there's nothing you can do about it!" The voice practically screamed over the receiver, causing Abby to yelp and temporarily drop her phone. "Just ask her after this call...Ask her how her doctors appointment two days ago went."
Abby picked up the phone with shaking hands, putting it on speaker. "Y-You lie! Mother was fine! I dont know who you are but you hade better hope I dont find you and---" A loud cackle sounded from the speaker, "AND WHAT ABERDEEN?! Gonna drain me of energy?!" She quickly put the phone off speaker, "Oh I know who you are and what you do Meinel of Oleander..." Abby opened her mouth to speak, but the voice continued, "I also know...One day, youre going to use those powers of yours to hurt your mom. She has cancer you know...The doctor confirmed it."
The scream that tore through her throat was immediate. "My mother DOES NOT have cancer! The doctor cleared her! I was there!" Silence was all she could hear on the other end, "H-Hello?" Next thing she knew, the call ended itself. Tossing her phone on the bed, Abby Immediately went to find her mother, spotting her in the garden. The tears were instant as she almost tackled her mother to the ground, wrapping her arms around her waist while her face was buried in the softness of her belly.
"Abby! What is wrong sugar plum?" She couldn't speak and continued to cry while her mother patted her head gently. "My sweet little girl...Did you hurt yourself? Can you please tell your mother what is wrong?" Abby looked up with red puffy eyes, "I...I got this call on the phone and the person sounded like me....Mother they told me something awful and I---" She hiccupped, "They said that I was going to hurt you and that you have cancer! I dont want you to go!" Her mother laughed gently, patting her daughter on the head, "Oh my sweet little girl...I dont have cancer dear, you were there for my appointment remember?"
Abby sniffled and let her mother go, "I -I know but they said you were hiding it from me because you dont want to see me sad," "I have nothing to hide from you dear, I'm rather healthy and will be on this Earth for many more years to come." "P-Promise?" "I do my little bug." Abby wiped the tears from her eyes, giving her mother another hug. "I-Ill hold you to that mother..." "I'm well aware dear." After getting one more hug from her mother, Abby made her way back to her room, staring down at the phone and feeling like it was some how bugged.
"Stupid phone...I'm going to see if father can get me another one. I dont want a faulty product." In fact, she was going to see if her father could get her a shiny new Android phone for her to show off to Andy at practice tomorrow. That would keep unknown numbers from contacting her and then she wouldn't have to worry about that stupid scary voice calling her again. She was also wondering if it was time for a new phone case even though she just got this one yesterday from Amazon.
To cover her bases, she sent a text to Andy telling him what happened and if the same thing happened to him, figuring when she didn't get a response that he would respond back at some point. Although, she couldn't help but think that what if her mother was in fact hiding something from her? Should she ask her father? But then again, he was busy overseas trying to establish a new branch of his private security company in Thailand, so calling him right now when he more than likely was not in the same time zone was pretty rude.
Sighing, she laid back down on her bed, plugging up her phone to her charger while she brought up YouTube to watch some videos about fashion and how the latest red carpet trends were just not it this year. She would totally agree but she did see some stars that were dressed to impress. These stars did the fashion thing rather well. Eventually, she fell into a fitful sleep, dreaming about pizza and ice cream rather than what she was told over that dreadful phone call.
