Destiny City is a large place, with a large population. It’s not uncommon to find a lost item here or there. Maybe a keychain, an earring, a book.

But, a six sided die? That’s different.

While traveling through Destiny City, you find a strange little object. It looks like old, stained wood, but something shiny in it catches your eye. How could you resist picking it up? But then, maybe you've found one of these dice before. Maybe you remember the Gameboard, already.

That's okay.

Even if you know better than to pick it up, all you have to do is look at it, and it's ensnared you...

Nacrite hadn’t intended to stop to admire the City’s discarded garbage. But the glint and shimmer of the odd wooden die caught her attention. Bending down, she scooped it up to better examine it. It wasn’t exactly common to find dice floating about, she thought. But this little six-sider was rather pretty. The old wood and gleaming threads of opalescence were pretty and unusual. She’d only ever seen resin dice. Well, finders keepers, she thought. As she tossed the die in the air and caught it, she felt an odd lurch in her stomach and blinked.

Space 5:
A dog barks, fierce and frightening. You can hear its growl and the hackles stand up on the back of your neck. You can practically feel spittle on you. It’s close. And it’s big. And it’s angry. If this beastly dog could reach you, no doubt it would try to tear you to shreds.

This… was not the corner of Fifth and Main. Nacrite wasn’t sure where this was. Through the haze, she could just barely make out what looked like an enormous game board sprawled out under her feet. Trying to step forward, she felt as if she’d just stomped face first into a wall of glass. Just as she stumbled backwards, the die fell from her hand and bounced on the ground. Rubbing her nose ruefully, she noticed that it had come up on a ‘5’.

For a moment, she thought nothing of it and bent to retrieve the silly thing. As she grabbed the dice, she took a step forward, but this time, instead of hitting a wall, she was able to walk forward. Well! That was certainly a pleasant surprise. Striding ahead, she felt herself slam into another wall and paused. Glancing back, she saw that she’d moved about five spaces on the massive board. And the dice had landed on a 5…

Before she could think too much about this, she was frightened out of her skin by the sound of a dog barking nearby. A very big, and very angry dog. She couldn’t see it through the haze, but she could feel it and it was far too close for her comfort. Deciding quickly, she threw the die to the ground, letting it settle on a number. 5 again. Well… What did she really have to lose here?

Nacrite moved forward.

Space 10:
A swampy smell fills the air. You take a step, and you seem to sink into it. Mud creeps over your feet, and you sink rapidly. Ankle deep, knee deep. Whether or not you squirm and fight against it, you are sinking. The mud is crushing and painful, and if you sink too deep it steals the breath from your lungs. There’s nothing to grab onto; you have to roll your dice quickly before that too gets sucked into the muddy quicksand.

Counting spaces, Nacrite’s brain was humming. She’d never really put much stock into the stories she’d heard about weird things (outside of magical boys and girls) happening within Destiny City. Sure, the news had reported on giant cicadas over the summer, but this had been a Cicada year. And they were normally fairly large. She’d just assumed people had been spooked by the unknown and their minds had just exaggerated what they’d seen.

Given what she was currently experiencing, clearly, the stories were not products of overwrought and imaginative minds.

As she hopped into the next box, the smell hit her before she realized that her feet were sticking. And what a smell it was. Gagging and trying to not taste the air she was sucking in through her mouth, the lieutenant coughed and noticed that she seemed to be shrinking.

No, no, what she was doing was sinking!

Scrambling wildly, Nacrite was dismayed to see nothing that she could grab onto to pull herself out of the clinging, crushing mud. And it was creeping further and further up. Knowing now that she really did have nothing to lose by playing along, she rolled the die, hoping that she wouldn’t end up entombed in smelly mud.

Space 12:
The smell of smoke is in the air. You can’t see what’s burning, but you can hear distant screams, and–carnival music? It feels like people are running past you, and the air fills with panic and alarm–but there’s nowhere for you to go, and the smoke is so thick. You’d better roll quickly so you can get out of here.

Somehow, she felt herself being pushed away from the mud and she stumbled across boxes. She hadn’t paid any attention to the number she’d rolled, trusting that any mis-steps would be halted by more invisible walls.

As she paused briefly to run her legs and cough, she became aware of the smoke smell. And if she’d thought the swamp ick had been thick, it was nothing compared to the heavy, woodsy scent of smoke that now filled her lungs. Coughing, she thought that she could hear screams and music. The kind of music that you’d hear at one of those little rinky-dink fairs… a whatchacallit, calliope. Within seconds though, the screams were louder and the smoke took on an odd tang that made Nacrite think of kerosene. She could feel a rush of panic around her, pressing against her and threatening to carry her away with it if she didn’t escape this box now.

“Well, you’ve worked so far. Let’s try for something a little better, yeah?”

Crouching below the smoke, she rolled, and watching carefully through watering eyes. Once the number landed, she nodded, grabbed the die and ran forward.

Space 18:
You smell something poison, something noxious. You pass through a haze of strange, green gas as you enter the square, but it fades after a few seconds. You feel cold. You feel empty. You start to decay. Maybe a part of you knows it’s an illusion, but in that split second when your body feels like it might go limp and when you look at your hand and see skin melting. You see bone. You’d best roll the dice so you don’t wind up a skeleton prop for the next player.

Counting squares, Nacrite had given up on any of this making a single lick of sense. As she reached the sixth square, she saw a shimmering green haze and hesitated for a second before steeling herself and stepping onto the square.

What was it with foul smells here? Coughing again, she felt as if her lungs were both on fire and melting. There was a chemically tang with an underlying sickly sweetness that couldn’t mean anything good for her. The wall of green gas was gone, but in it’s place it had left her with several odd feelings that she didn’t like at all.

Glancing down at her hand, the lieutenant gasped out loud. Her skin looked ragged, patchy. Too much for her own bones. Carefully moving it, she saw spots of raw, dark red appear and seem to grow. Rot in high speed. Stumbling, she felt her very bones go loose as sinew and muscle turned goopy.

There was no time to waste if she wanted to escape. Throwing out her arm in a jerky motion, Nacrite cast the die and hoped that she wouldn’t literally fall to pieces waiting for it to settle on the poisoned ground.

Space 20:
The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

How she’d managed to move her rapidly decaying frame off of the square to to the next destination was something that Nacrite would never figure out. But move she did and when she sunk down on the square, she felt lighter. Better.

A quick glance around showed that this square was very different. It was practically bathed in opalescent light and the wood of the square seemed cleaner. Looking ahead, she couldn’t see any other squares on the board. Did that… Did that mean she’d somehow won? She’d beaten this weird game?

Tottering to her feet, she glared all around her and decided to take a chance. Stepping forward, there were no walls to stop her. Her body moved through space as it should and when her step had completed, she found herself standing exactly where she’d been when she found the die.

Holy screaming shitballs. For a moment, she was tempted to chuck the die away and tell herself that she’d had a very bad hallucination. But caution won out and she instead pocketed the die. She was never, ever going to assume that the weird stories she heard were anything other than truth from now on.

After taking in a deep breath, Nacrite headed home. Patrolling could wait for another time. All she wanted right now was wine, a bath and one of her stupid smutty books.
