Quote: Mothmask (6) : There are eyes in the darkness of every forest, staring at you. Between one blink and the next, they disappear, only to reappear somewhere in the trees. Sometimes it’s one, sometimes it’s many. The faces are almost human; you can see the hollow of the eye, a narrow nose, and an eerie, toothy grin. It’s inhuman–and terrifying. No matter where you go, there are always faces outside, watching you. No tree is safe. It feels like being followed by horrifying ghouls–and what’s with the strange, raspy laughter coming from the depths of the forest? Fear is a powerful tool, but maybe if you’re just a little brave you can get close enough to better see what monsters are stalking you. You can find dark moths with strange, humanesque features painted on their wings. They are roughly the size of a basketball and, upon close inspection, seem mostly harmless. Except, if you stay too close to them, the face on their wings change–to yours. The moths cannot be caught and will always fly away, fleeing into the darkness, but it’s still unnerving. Especially if other people start to see your face staring back at them from the darkness with that uncomfortable, raspy laughter.
What on earth ever possessed me to come out here, Tololo thought wearily as she trudged and plodded through the dark trees. Going into the woods was dangerous at the best of times. This could hardly count as that. Granted, she knew that the bulk of the park wasn’t that far away, but in the darkness, it seemed further. And creepier.
But when one saw weird faces peeking out of the dark and looking up to no good, one followed just in case there was Justice to be dealt out.
Yes, great. Good job, she scolded herself. Just keep telling yourself that this is for Justice and not your dumb, carnie a** looking for thrills.
A soft, rasping laughter interrupted her thoughts and her head whipped around, trying to see who was out there. Seeing nothing, she continued into the trees, slowly becoming aware that she wasn’t alone. At least one other magic type was out in the trees emitting an aura that she couldn’t ignore. Curious, she followed the aura deeper into the dark before stumbling upon what could only be a chibi senshi.
“Isn’t it a little late for you to be out, kiddo?” she asked in a friendly voice. She would have said more except she heard that weird af raspy laugh again, this time accompanied by a soft whirring noise that sounded like wings in flight.

Totoro had been curious. He enjoyed hunting bugs, up until the moment. He was slowly starting to become increasingly concerned about the fact he'd choosen to follow the Moths with human like faces. The human faces were very, very creepy but to top it off the sudden raspy laugh made him jump.
What he also hadn't expected was someone else to join him. He yelped and jumped when the voice came out of no where followed by another raspy laugh and the sound of wings. Pulling his hood over his eyes for a moment before slowly peeking out, "O-o-oh!"
It was another powered senshi. "OH boy am I glad to see a friendly face."
The question she'd asked finally registered, "Yeah, probably. . . but I was hearing reports of bugs that had human faces so I wanted to check it out, see if there was . . something I could do?"

Well, she had to admire the kid’s guts, even if she thought it was sheer madness for him to be out alone. Good thing she was here now.
Giving the chibi a friendly smile, she moved a little closer before crouching a bit to be on a more even level with the kid.
“I’m about as friendly a face as you’d ever find,” she said cheerily before holding out her hand. “I’m Tololo, senshi of Friendship. Gotta say, it's pretty brave of you to decide to come out and investigate like this.”
But she had to wonder at bugs with human faces. That sounded like a recipe for endless nightmares and that was coming from someone who liked bugs in general. She would have said more, asked for specifics, but she’d happened to glance up and nearly fell over. One of the bugs he’d mentioned was sitting on the tree above. It was just a moth, but a colossal one and the face-like patterning on it’s wings was… creepy. Barely recovering her dignity, she pointed up.
“So, bugs like that, then?”

He looked more comfortable and less worried now that there was an older senshi with him, and he nodded when she said she was a friendly of a face as he'd ever find. "I'm Chibi Totoro, senshi of Racoons!"
He watched as she was suddenly startled and looked over his shoulder when she pointed and asked if it was bugs like that. He was looking at the huge moth with -- human like face on it's wings. "THATS IT!" He said pointing towards it.
He cringed, it was very creepy and he probably shouldn't've shouted as he startled the bug as well and it took flight. There was a laughter that sounded raspy and he edged closer to the senshi's side looking around, "I feel like we're being watched by more than one. . . "
He said softly looking to see if he could spot more. Granted the one went deeper into the forest.

Reaching out, Tololo rested her hand on Totoro’s shoulder and gave it a reassuring squeeze. She couldn’t imagine how he’d managed to justify coming out here to himself but he had and thankfully she’d found him before anything bad could happen.
Which, she admitted to herself, was still a possibility given that they were chasing gigantic moths in the woods. But she’d do her best to make sure he got out safe and sound. She didn’t even mind when he edged in closer to her. Frankly, if there’d been a senshi bigger than her around, she’d have been doing exactly the same!
“We might be,” she whispered back. “But I don’t think they’re going to hurt us and they’re probably more worried about us hurting them since we’re so much bigger.”
A look around didn’t show any other moths, though she could still hear that laughing sound. Thinking hard, her eyes flicked from Totoro to the woods and back again.
“Tell you what,” she said, “we’ll go a little bit further in and look. If we see a moth, we’ll quietly try to get a better and closer look. But if we don’t see anything, we’ll head home. What do you say?”

Totoro felt her hand on his shoulder. It was some what comforting though the possibility they were being watched by more than one wasn't terribly comforting.
"True," He nodded they both were bigger than the moths but still was a little intimidated, "I don't know if it's true but I've heard they steal faces too." He looked up towards Tololo, "There was some other kid at school talking about it."
He nodded when she said they'd go in further and if they didn't see any thing they'd leave, "Sounds good to me. The creepy laugh though can go away." He said as he started to go towards the direction that the moth they'd seen flew.

”Face stealers, huh?” Tololo wasn’t sure what to think of that. Sure, the wing markings had been face-like, but it seemed like over-reacting to call them face-stealers. Still, stranger things could and did happen. “Sounds like kids trying to scare each other to me, but we’ll keep our eyes open and see if we can’t figure it out.”
Doing her best to radiate sunshiney cheer and reassurance, she walked into the woods with him and wished she’d brought a flashlight. Sure, her phone had one built in, but that was for little darks. Not big darkness like this. Though…
“Hold up a second. I don’t like us tromping through here with no light,” she muttered as she concentrated on bringing her phone out of subspace. Once it was in her hand, she thumbed open the flashlight app and sighed. “Okay. Slightly better.”
It wasn’t much, but being able to sort of see the ground was helpful. Sweeping the phone around, she scanned tree trunks and shook her head. She would have suggested that they think about heading home now.
Except that damned laugh rustled and wheezed somewhere just up above them and Tololo swept her flashlight up out of instinct. And found herself wishing that she hadn’t. A small cluster of stupidly huge moths rested on the trees, wings twitching in the night breeze.
“Um. Found them.”

"Okay," Totoro said as Tololo seemed to think it was just rumor and it might have well been, but something about it sounded true too. It was shortly after that the chibi realized the other was searching for a flashlight and summoned out a small one that had a pokemon print to it.
"It doesn't throw much light but this should help as well." He offered as he turned on the light and followed Tololo's lead by sweeping what the other senshi hadn't with his light before hearing the words 'found them' and there was a moment he stood looking at them in the dim light of Tololo' phone.
He swept his flashlight up there and bit his upper lip in worry. "No - w what?" He asked drawing out the now for a moment as he was unsure. And hoped that the other had an idea. The laughing continued as well and he really wished that wouldn't continue when they were looking at scary bugs.

As a dedicated lover of all shapes and sizes of critters, Tololo knew, objectively, that she shouldn't have a problem with these moths. Moths were cute! And looked soft and she kind of wanted to pet them.
But these moths made her skin prickle and crawl. She wasn’t sure if it was their size, the face patterns or the strange laughing noise that seemed to go with them. Whatever it was, she didn’t like it at all. And yet, part of her still wanted to touch one.
Hearing Totoro’s question, she glanced down at him and considered. She didn’t know if these things were dangerous like those crazy cicadas had been and she couldn’t really find out with a chibi accompanying her. Putting a kid at risk just because she was nosy absolutely went against her moral code. So, she couldn’t and wouldn’t do anything to rile the moths up. Even if she did wanna touch them.
“Well, I don’t feel any Chaos vibes from them, do you?” she asked. “I don’t think they’re actually hurting anything or anyone. They’re just really spooky.”
She was starting to wonder about that laughing noise. Could it just be the moths rustling around? Maybe their wings rubbed together and made the noises? Maybe all moths did and they just never noticed because most moths weren’t the size of a small dog. As she considered this, Tololo kept watching the moths and stared for a few moments as one fluttered its wings. As she watched, she saw very familiar features beginning to appear. Feeling her stomach drop, she did her best to keep her face and voice normal.
Totoro had mentioned that the moths stole faces and she had just seen her own in the tree above. She needed to get him out of here or he’d have nightmares for months.
“I think,” she said in a mostly breezy voice, “we can leave them be. They’re just living their own creepy little lives and not hurting anyone. C’mon, kiddo. It’s past both of our bedtimes and I want to make sure you get home safe.”
”LP” Feel free to wrap on your next post ♥ Either way, I think you have enough words to get a ticket for this one~

eldritch stardust If you think that's good it's a wrap then. Totoro was watching the moths, as Tololo mentioned she didn't feel any chaos energy from them and he shook his head no in agreement. "I don't think they're chaos aligned or youma. . . but they are spooky and there's something sus about them."
The laughing continued and he nudged a little closer to to Tololo, he wasn't trying to get his face stolen so he only watched them for small bits at a time and tried to keep his face mostly hidden by his hoodie.
There was a pause when she said it was time for them to go. "Aww, but yeah . . . maybe you're right. If they stay here and don't hurt anyone - - I guess them being face stealers might just be some random rumor."
He headed out of the forest with Tololo until they were completely out, then he parted ways with her before they actually got to his house. "Good night! Thank you for investigating with me!" He called.
