Destiny City is a large place, with a large population. It’s not uncommon to find a lost item here or there. Maybe a keychain, an earring, a book.

But, a six sided die? That’s different.

While traveling through Destiny City, you find a strange little object. It looks like old, stained wood, but something shiny in it catches your eye. How could you resist picking it up? But then, maybe you've found one of these dice before. Maybe you remember the Gameboard, already.

She was honestly grateful for the cooler weather, and tonight there was even a breeze that paired made her patrol that much more pleasant. Things had been looking up recently. Busier, sure, but maybe that was why? She didn’t have too much time to just sit and overthink and get lost in her thoughts. Lately even those have been lightening up. A mix of leaning on others and learning to go a little easier on herself went a long way to helping with that, and she was grateful.

So grateful, in fact, that she was working on putting together little goodie baskets for work and school friends alike. But she had to pause for tonight to go on patrol, because that was still a priority to her. The balance had gotten a bit tougher since the start of school, but after the adjustment period it really wasn’t so bad.

Spotting a bench just ahead of her route, Ekstrom smiled and as she got closer to it she spotted something familiar.

A wooden die drew her attention to the path just in front of the bench. It piqued her curiosity and drew her in closer. Only when she was just within reach of it did she stop in her tracks. She knew what that die was, but before she could turn around and get away she found she was already sucked into whatever pocket dimension it took her to the last time.

Darkness first, and then she saw the path ahead, and the die sat innocently in front of where she now stood on her current square. Resigned to her fate, the Squire stooped down and scooped it right up.

“Here we go again…”

Crouching down, she rolled for the first of hopefully the minimum of 4 times to get to the end, if she remembered right. The first roll didn’t seem promising, but it still wasn’t the worst possibility, so she took it in stride and, after scooping up the die, began to move forward.

Space 4
Something smells rotten. You can’t see very far into the darkness, but if you squint closely a dark form seems to be dragging itself along the ground. Sometimes you see a pale hand almost close enough to grab you–or, maybe something does grab you. It’s cold, and frightening, and it’s trying to drag you out of bounds.

There was a faint hint of something as she went, an unpleasant sort of smell that was vaguely familiar. Only when she properly stepped into her new square did the rotting smell smack her right in the face, and she gagged and immediately pinched her nose to try and shield herself from the stench. It helped a little, but she could hardly wait to start and try rolling.

Moving toward the front edge of the square, she was about to start rolling when she could square, in the distance, she could see…something. It gave her pause, and she squinted to try and see…

Her eyes went wide at the pale hand that came into view, and she fumbled with the die in her hand.

She rolled as fast as she could–there was something out there, and she could swear the hand came up to try and grab her more than a few time in the length of time it took her to roll again.

Space 8
Something slithers across your foot, so fast that you might have thought you imagined it. Except, a few seconds later, it happens again. And then, again. Snakes keep moving across your space. If you move, they see you–and they might bite. Some of them hiss, some are capable of spraying a poisonous liquid that can cause itchiness or burning.

Ekstrom moved carefully at first as soon as she was able. No hand came up to grab her, and there was nothing and no one in front of her, much to her surprise, so when she determined that she was free and clear to go she sprinted to her next square. Again, once inside she did her best to get to the front of the square as fast as she could. Along the way she felt something again, this time slither across her foot.

“Maybe it won’t be there if I don’t look down,” she muttered to herself as she stopped in her tracks when it happened again. She could hear them slithering about at her feet, but she was still so far from the edge…

She took a step, one of them thunked against the metal of her knee pad. It was only then that she looked down…and immediately regretted it. There were snakes everywhere, moving across her and essentially covering the floor of her space. She could only imagine the thunk as an attempt to attack her, but she had to move. It only took a second for her to decide what she had to do next, and she raised her shield for a makeshift surface.

She rolled, and as soon as the number came up, she made a dash for the border of the square. She felt the bites on her leg and sprinkles of something wet landing on her neck, but none of it was enough to make her stop, and she eventually made it past the snakes and into her next square.

Space 11
You hear a frantic flapping above you, but that’s all the warning you get before a hoard of bats descend. They scratch and slap and screech, but you avoid getting bitten. For now. You’ve invaded their space and they seem keen to defend it. You can try to fight them, but the only way to escape them is to roll again.

Of course, the flapping sound caught her attention immediately. The Squire glanced u[ this time, just in time to see a hoard of bats coming down on her. Her eyes went wide and she raced to the front end of the square and rolled as quickly as she could, flailing her shield around to avoid getting bitten.

The Squire again sprinted out of this space as soon as she could, feeling the sting of the slaps and scratches on her face. Hopefully nothing would scar, she thought in passing as she went.

Space 15
Bats. Maybe you missed them attacking earlier, but they’re back again, and angrier than ever. Instead of just screeching or scratching, they’re swooping down and biting now–and the effects are instantaneous. The little teeth are sharp and painful, but once bitten you might feel agitated and prone to violence, and you might feel perpetually cold and hungry with no relief in sight. The effects might last when you leave the square–or they might linger for a few hours or days after you get out of here.

Though it seemed she got out of the frying pan and into the fire. There were more bats in this new space, and they didn’t hesitate to swoop down on her as soon as she got into the new square. Ekstrom crouched as low as she could and held her shield up to defend herself against this new, and much angrier hoard, and she crab walked to the edge of the space before she rolled and hoped that this one would get her to the end.

When she rolled next, it occurred to her that she hadn’t actually been tallying her rolls. To her credit, she’d been too busy running for her life and avoiding the worst of the attacks from snakes and bats and…whatever that first one was supposed to be. So as she escaped her last square with the bats she could only hope that she was close to the finish line.

Space 20
The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

The light that covered her as soon as she stepped foot in the light brought a wave of her relief that crashed down onto her and brought her to her knees. The Squire fought back tears–out of fright and frustration–and glancing back down toward the darkness that was now fading away, she wondered why she’d been so unlucky as to wind up in this place again. The thoughts lingered even as she found herself back at the park, in front of the bench where she saw the die sitting just moments ago, except the die was now in her hand. Sighing, she picked herself up and looked the die over again. It was the same as the one she had at home, just as pretty and misleading.

Still, she pocketed it and flopped down onto the bench to rest a bit. She was sore, her neck itched, her face stung, and there was a prickly feeling in her legs from what she imagined were likely snake bites. She earned this break, and probably a break for the next few days. If for nothing else but to avoid running into this die again.

Though she realized, as she leaned back, that there was no guarantee that she wouldn’t run into it as a civilian.
