"Talking" "Thoughts"

After the night of the explosion, Anika felt herself becoming more and more curious about her former best friend. She hadn’t thought of looking in the notebook that night but as time went on curiosity got the best of her. There wasn’t much to go on at first. At least that she could understand. There were tons of scribbles and notes about Arsene and other poison folk which she found strange, especially considering the writing style seemed so familiar.

Anika would never admit to reading books for fun, especially with the little downtime she had as a princess but there was one author whose stories she couldn’t put down. And the writing in the notebook was eerily similar. Artists copied each other’s styles all the time but this was… different. It was almost like they were the same person. But that was impossible because Gabriel was a runaway coward and Alain was… Well, she didn’t really know. But it couldn’t be the duke, could it?

Looking further into the notebook, she had more questions. There were random pages that had her name mentioned throughout. The princess wasn’t sure if she was supposed to be faltered or insulted. The way he wrote about her made her seem like some god-like entity, impossible to touch or speak to. But if that was the case, why did he approach her that night? The night when he was so close to breaking her that she had to leave. They hadn’t spoken much since but she knew she would have to make her presence known sooner or later.

The morning started like any other, getting breakfast with Nayeni while she chatted about classes. More of her talking at Nayeni but that was just that she hated the sound of her voice and signing was just so tedious while trying to eat. Thankfully at least one person was willing to submit to her demands and just listen for once. Nayeni, while being a haunting reminder of what she had to endure, was the closest thing she had to a friend now.

Looking across the dining hall her eyes landed on Gabriel, he looked miserable. The sun seemed to bring out the coward in his eyes. Her eyes continued to follow him as he started making his way out of the Dining Hall, there was still plenty of time before class started, so why was he so eager to leave? At least this meant he would be most likely alone which made for a good time for her to attackspeak to him. "I’m done, talk later love," she sputtered as she signed to her friend.

Quickly throwing away any remaining food and putting away her silverware, she followed after Gabriel. Did he always walk so slowly? Or did he know he was being followed? It wasn’t hard to catch up with him, almost as if he wanted to be caught. That or he was a slow walker. ” Well, don’t you look terrible this morning. I understand we can't all look as amazing as me but, that doesn't mean stop trying.” Anika called out to him, whipping her hair with her free hand as the other now held the notebook she had been safekeeping.

Staring him down once their paces had matched, it was hard to tell if her words affected him. It was possible comments about his appearance no longer had an effect on him anymore. Maybe she would have to dig deeper into the vault for this one. "So, I’ve been reading a new book lately; A real page-turner. His work reminds me so much of Alain Miranda’s, wouldn’t you agree?" A confident smirk covered her face as she pretended to flip through his notebook. This would be a real test to see what he had to say and if he was the coward she thought he was after all.

                                                        GABRIEL ♫ MONTGOMERY
                                                        DUKE OF MUSIQUE

Gabriel Montgomery hadn't been a morning person for most of his life. It wasn't the worst thing to wake up early or anything like that; he just wasn't the type of person to be at 100% from the moment they awoke. Or at least, not naturally. When it was required of him, he knew how to force himself through waking up at the crack of dawn if that's what was needed of him. During his time as a war journalist, you woke up at the time that was best for the people you were servicing, not the other way around. The events that got him to that part of his life were harrowing, those years even more so, but the discipline he'd gained from those days would always be a part of him.

However, as he was once again the master of his own schedule, he'd made some adjustments. Since his first day, he'd slowly been optimizing his sleep schedule to what best worked for school life. In general, he tried not to stay up too late, as while he could function with minimal sleep, he definitely did better when he got roughly a solid 8 hours. But every now and again, he'd stray from his normal habits. Last night in particular, he stood up until the wee hours of the night to work on a draft for a new novel he had in mind. He hadn't really done any solid fiction work in a few years now, but the part fantasy, part horror life that being at Utopia was shaping up to be gave him renewed interest in the genre.

All across the bed he slept on, there were pages upon pages of scribbles and ideas. There wasn't anything coherent, at least not to anyone else, but the gears in Gabe's brain were turning for the first time in a long time, and he wasn't going to let that go to waste. But his actions had consequences, and starting his day on this particular morning was a struggle to say the least.

Walking out of his room in a daze, he slowly made his way to get breakfast and enough caffeine to get him through the rest of the morning at the very least. He took his time, having always set his alarm to account for needing extra time to get ready for the day. And while getting up in itself took some time today, he was still more than set. Without any major concerns, he allowed himself the comfort of dragging his feet a little bit. His morning espresso was truly a blessing, and it very quickly worked its magic on him. Finishing up his breakfast by himself, he walked out of the dining hall leisurely.

Hopefully things don't go too insane today. I think I've had enough giants bursting through walls, zombies, crystal creatures, and whatever was going on with the campus that night for a lifetime.

Then again, good things had come out of the insanity that this school seemed to bring out of everyone as well. He'd reconnected with Sorya and Anika after so very, very long, and things seemed to have gone well on both of those fronts during the night of the explosion. In the time since, however, he'd mostly spent time with Sorya. Things between himself and the princess still felt tense, and a majority of the confidence he had with her that night had been expended then and there. They exchanged pleasantries and such, which was more than before, but progress was simply slower on that front.

I've really got to get it together with Ani. I had good momentum that night, and I'm letting it go to waste. More than that, I...I really do just miss her. Maybe a bit later I'll-

” Well, don’t you look terrible this morning. I understand we can't all look as amazing as me but, that doesn't mean stop trying.”

...I guess it's true what they say: speak of the devil, and she shall appear.

As the princess yelled out to him at the top of her lungs as if it weren't still super early, he jumped a little bit in surprise. Getting himself together, he put on his game face as Anika Alto approached him like a vulture stalking their quarry. There was an immediate sense of concern that passed through his being as he saw his notebook in her hands and a confident smile on her face. She was up to something, that much was for certain. And whatever it was, he just hoped his outfit for today was acceptable enough for her. He was already down a very nice gown, and he was hoping to get through the school year with at least some of his wardrobe intact.

"So, I’ve been reading a new book lately; A real page-turner. His work reminds me so much of Alain Miranda’s, wouldn’t you agree?"

Oh no. In the days since the explosion, he hadn't once thought of the consequences of Anika walking off with his notebook. Had that really been enough? It made sense, he supposed. Ani was one of his earliest readers, and while he tried his best to keep a low profile in the town of Arioso, he nevertheless allowed himself some degree of success. Whether it was as an author or as a journalist, it made sense that the princess would've seen some form of his writing in the years they'd been apart. The scribbles in that notebook seemed to be the final piece in the puzzle, and now the most dangerous woman in Musique had him pegged. Go figure.

"Alright, you got me," began Gabriel, waving up his hands to surrender. Behind the dark lenses of his shades, golden eyes fixed their gaze on the rock star's expression. What exactly had she been trying to gain? From the hungry look in her eyes, she clearly wanted something out of him. And even in going about the path of least resistance, he knew he wasn't out of the woods just yet.

"I don't suppose this is your way of asking me for an autograph, is it?"

Humor was his first line of defense, especially when he was sleep-deprived. Still, he wasn't entirely against whatever Anika actually had planned for him. Not yet, at least. He understood that the princess undoubtedly had high expectations of him, especially considering the heartache she so clearly had already suffered by his hand and so many others. So whatever game she was playing, he'd be her player two. The old days might be long gone, but he'd made her a promise in the present, and he intended to keep it.

"Talking" "Thoughts"

It wasn’t much fun if he wasn’t going to put up much of a fight to hide his secret identity. Anika was hoping he would have spent some time denying it so that she could start displaying her wonderful detective work. Why did no one seem to want to fall into line? Of course, she hadn’t told him she was trying to toy with him but, leave it to the writer to be above all the games. If he was going to be a loyal servantfriend the least he could do now was offer to be of use to her.

But that never really was the nature of their relationship. Despite her higher status, she never treated Gabriel as lesser than before Utopia. Maybe that’s why it hurt so much when he stayed away. Deep down she got it but it still hurt and not just mentally. If Anika closed her eyes, she could still hear the shrieking in her ears as she pleaded with them to stop. When she had offered to help distract the guards so Gabriel could make his escape, she never thought that she would receive consequences, did Gabriel know that she had? Was it even worth bringing up now? The last thing she wanted from anyone was pity.

"An autograph? You must be joking." Anika nearly slipped on her heel as she choked out a laugh, "Or drunk perhaps?" Looking at his tinted glasses and rags, some might call an outfit. Maybe there was some bite in him after all. Like she would want his autograph, he was dressed like a homeless person with a hangover. Given her previous observations maybe he was hungover. If he thought she of all people wanted an autograph from him, he had to be the littlest bit high or drunk. ' Bold to do so before class but who am I to judge for one’s vices.' Thinking back to her nights with her former fiancé who was now engaged to the bubblegum heiress.

Collecting herself before deciding on what she wanted to say back she looked him over, still surprised this really was him. It felt like there were so many ghosts haunting her at this school, maybe her father was right in saying it was better for her to be at the castle. All these feelings were of no use to her. Not if she was to take the throne soon. She knew it was only a matter of time before she was sent back and that she was living on borrowed time here. It didn't change the fact she was enjoying her stay. Not that she would say it to the poorly dressed dopehead, but she had missed him.

But what did it matter? Once she was queen it wasn’t like she could have friends. She barely had time for them when she was Princess. Nayeni had been carefully selected for her after Gabriel’s disappearance. Despite having the most power in the kingdom, she knew it was all image. She had no interest in politics, she never had. But Musique needed a queen and she was the rightful heir as her father had reminded her so many times before. No one else would be able to fill the spot. It was her duty.

But she still was here, talking with Gabe. Only the gods knew how many chances she would get to make things right. If that’s even what she wanted. She didn’t know what she wanted from the duke was it fair of him to be attacking him if she didn’t know? Was it bad if she didn’t care? "You’re not fun at all Gabe. I was expecting you to fight it just a little." A small smile crept onto her face. Was this happiness?

She didn’t stop her investigation there though. There were still so many questions. Many she already knew the answers to but wanted to hear from the man himself. It would be difficult for her to admit being a fan of his works but she truly was. It was hard to believe the brave war writer was the same person in front of her now. "Why even bother with a secret identity if you’re just going to give it up so quickly?" It was a good question. But an easy one. She would start here and see what he had to say. See if he really was a man of his word after all.

                                                        GABRIEL ♫ MONTGOMERY
                                                        DUKE OF MUSIQUE

From the look on his princess's face, it was clear to Gabriel that he was still very much in hot water. Whatever game Anika had planned for the two of them today, it was clear that he had not played to her expectations. From the way she approached, he should've figured she wanted some direct confrontation; it seemed to be the only way she knew how to operate at this point. Well, with him anyways.

He couldn't really blame her for that, though. Who knows what kind of horrors she'd been subjected to on the battlefield? And against her own will, no less. Conflict had likely been her only constant in the years he'd been away, and the princess seemed determined to make sure he understood as much. From their previous conversation, it was clear that she held a grudge. Gabriel supposed it was only fair for having experienced years of abandonment. It'd been nearly a decade since that fateful day, and there wasn't a day since they last spoke that he hadn't wondered what might've happened if he took her with him instead of leaving the only friend he'd had at that point far behind.

Perhaps they could've beat the odds. The search parties would've been infinitely larger, sure, and wouldn't have rested until they found the princess. The king wouldn't have allowed for failure, after all. Even so, if Gabriel was able to mostly keep a low profile in Arioso, then maybe, just maybe, it would've been possible to keep hidden. Two heads were better than one, or so goes the saying. And if Nayeni had been kind enough to keep his secret, he couldn't imagine her not doing the same for the princess who had stolen her heart the moment she laid eyes on her. Between all three of them, there was a chance that they could've made it work. It wouldn't have been for long considering what became of Arioso, but at least they could've faced it together.

But that was just him editing the pitch for a story that he'd long since passed on. The show that ended up on the world stage was much different, and there was nothing he could do to change that. Still, he couldn't seem to help himself when it came to picking those pages up and giving them a fresh look through. Despite all the plot holes and missing characters, it was a compelling draft. It was what he wished he'd tried to do. There was no real way to know if any of it would've worked in the real world, but could it have really been much worse than what actually happened? Gabriel understood he'd have to spend the rest of life not knowing, but that didn't make it any easier for him to do so. Torturing himself about his mistakes just so happened to be one of his favorite pastimes.

"An autograph? You must be joking. Or drunk perhaps?"

Anika's laughter brought him back to the present. It was the same laugh she always had, confident and proud. In a way, Gabriel was glad that Anika never lost the fire those violet eyes always carried with them. She was a real force of nature, now more than ever really. Did he enjoy how often he was finding himself in the eye of the storm? No, not really. But storms didn't last forever; he just hoped that whatever remained was something that could be built upon.

"Oh yeah, you got me again. You know me, just a total alcoholic. Had scotch in my coffee and everything!"

If anything, bantering like this was helping wake him up almost as well as the coffee had. The "danger" was helping his heart rate pick up as Gabriel knew he was tempting the storm to pick up in intensity. If Gabriel had learned anything about himself in life, it was that he was an absolute expert at making things harder for himself. And according to whispers on the grapevine back in Musique, not giving Anika Alto exactly what she wanted was like granting yourself a death sentence.

But honestly? Gabe always found that to be a rather shallow interpretation. With everything her father and the war put her through, there was far more to that story than what people usually spoke of. As far as he was concerned, Anika had every right to be angry at the whole world. Him included. He could hear the laser-pointed judgment in every accusation she made towards him, and although it pained him, it wasn't like he could just ask her to stop. Too many people had already asked for far too much from her. But he also felt as though he didn't have to. Even like this, he couldn't deny that he was finding himself enjoying the conversation so far. With such good company, it'd be hard not to.

"You’re not fun at all Gabe. I was expecting you to fight it just a little."

"Fight it? But I haven't even done my morning stretches."

Gabriel let out an unintentional, but nonetheless timely yawn, closing his eyes for a moment. Looking over at Anika again, she found the princess smiling at him. No turning away, no deflecting. Just that smile he'd almost forgotten. Gabe returned Ani's with one of his own. If quips were to be their new primary form of communication, they both seemed to wear the look well.

"Why even bother with a secret identity if you’re just going to give it up so quickly?"

Gabriel paused for a moment before responding. It did seem silly sometimes, didn't it? He should've sent one of those letters, if not all of them. He could've done something, anything, to keep in contact with her during the time their paths branched apart. From what he understood of it, the only contribution he made to Anika's life during those years was adding his name to the list of people who left her behind without a word. They'd spoken the night he made his escape, of course, but after that? Not a peep. Not even one.

"It was never you that I was keeping my identity a secret from," began Gabriel simply. He'd had concerns about her seeking him out in his most insecure moments, sure. In those years, he'd avoided facing Anika face-to-face or even pen-to-pen like the plague. But in being so scared of what the princess thought of him, he denied himself any opportunity to repay the effort she had put in to help him escape to Arioso. Moreover, he'd done a disservice to the friendship he'd built up with her over those years. It might've been different for her, with Anika having siblings to confide in, but for Gabriel? For so very long, it was just her. And look what he did with that. Despite how casual he was acting, he knew he deserved every moment Anika didn't place her faith in him.

And yet here they were, sharing each other's company despite everything. Gabriel was finding that the bridges he thought were burnt to a crisp weren't as eviscerated as he thought they'd been recently. He wasn't sure if he could rebuild things with Anika as easily as things with Sorya had been going, but he nonetheless wanted it to try. Moreover, it seemed as though somewhere in there Anika wanted to try too. Second chances weren't always given out, especially from people who'd been through as much as Anika. But she seemed to be extending out an olive branch in a very Anika Alto sort of way, and Gabriel was going to grasp it in earnest.

"Looking back, there's a lot I wish I'd done differently. But for whatever it's worth, it's good to see you again, Ani. So do I get a turn to ask you anything at some point? I know I missed a lot, and...if you'd allow me, I'd like to know you again. Perhaps we could find somewhere to sit for a bit?"

Technically, he just asked her two questions already. He'd created an opening for her to strike, but he didn't mind if she took it. From how excitedly she had approached him, he was almost certain Anika had an entire oratorio's worth of choice words for him. Gabriel was ready for them, though. After all, how could he prove himself to be a good employee otherwise?

"Talking" "Thoughts"

Originally taken aback by his quip but then pleased that there was some bark in him after all her smile continued. Maybe there was still a chance for the two of them after all. Anika was still torn if she wanted him to pick up a racket and play with her or just fetch like a good little boy but she figured she would find her answer around the way. It was unfair for him to expect to her to know all the answers, after all, she was living on borrowed time here. It would only be a matter of time before her father called her back home, why couldn’t she have some fun first?

There was a short moment of silence after Anika’s question was finally answered. She wondered why there was a pause between his words. Was he struggling with what to do as well? Gabriel always seemed like the more put-together one out of the two of them when they were teenagers why did it now feel like the both of them were on the verge of a total collapse? What would it mean for Musique if they did? The princess still wondered about how her life would have turned out if she and Gabriel had managed to escape together all those years ago. But telling him that wouldn’t do anything now. She was the one who opted to be the distraction so he could go. Deep down she knew why he never reached out but it didn’t stop the pain she felt. Nothing did.

"It was never you that I was keeping my identity a secret from,"

More information Anika already knew the answer to. Why was she tormenting him anyway? It wasn’t like making him squirm now would change the past. Still, there was a louder voice in her head saying it was worth a try in doing so. Maybe if everyone hurt as much as she did, finally she would be heard. If he wasn’t trying to hide his identity from her then why not say something to her sooner? Gabriel was the one wanting honesty and she was the one being gracious enough to allow him another chance but it was getting to be tedious having to prod and pry for information when long ago she would have been the only person he told.

Maybe it was time that Anika started letting go of the rope. Reality often scared her but Gabriel used to be one of the only people she could be real with. Fantasy was much more fun but it didn’t seem like the duke was willing to play to her delusions, " I figured as much, it would be hard to hide your style from your first fan after all." Her prideful smile had been replaced with a much more serious one as her voice changed to a softer whisper.

… Was he being for real? Anika felt like she had been hit with another dose of reality and she wasn’t sure if she was ready for it. But it wasn’t exactly up to her now. After all, she was the one that started the game to begin with. Gabriel was now coming to play and it was only fair that she let up a little bit if she was going to play fairly. Anika sighed, " I suppose. Is there a place you would like to go? Otherwise library is pretty empty in the mornings."

Normally she would chastise herself for being so forgiving but there was something in the water. So many things weren’t making sense, first Syena, then Gabriel. How many ghosts would it take to haunt her before she realized whether or not she was living in a dream or a nightmare? The night of the explosion she thought she might know the answer after hearing about the nightmare creatures but those were so quickly explained away she didn’t know what to think. Everyone seemed to have all the answers except her… and Gabriel. If she could help him with that then maybe he could help her as well. As much as the idea of asking for help from someone wearing servant garbs pained her, it seemed like he was a huge piece of the puzzle of where her heart had gone.

Anika didn’t give Gabriel much of a chance to debate on location, opting to just march over to the huge library doors. Opening the doors to the library, she hoped not to disturb the librarian. The brute was quite intimidating and not worth the trouble of explaining why they were here so early in the morning. Thankfully since it was so early in the morning most of the staff and students were in the dining hall, leaving just the two of them to… talk. " Did you know there’s a section for your works in here?" Anika teased a bit, still unsure whether or not she was ready to be vulnerable for the duke.

Wait, she wasn't supposed to know that. Anika was already showing too much of herself to him. Admitting she never stopped being a fan of his would ultimately end with him thinking less of her, she could hear her father yelling at her over and over in her mind. It was better for her to just focus on finding a quiet place for the two of them to talk, and quickly. Not wanting to seem too acquainted with the library, she pretended to bop around a moment before choosing the two lounge chairs near the fantasy section, her usual spot when she was here. " Uh. This will do I suppose." The princess pretended to dust off one of the chairs before sitting. Anika looked expectedly at Gabriel, " Come on now, I haven't got all day. If you have questions take a seat and ask them. her demanding tone returned in full force now.

" I suppose. Is there a place you would like to go? Otherwise library is pretty empty in the mornings."

As if she took Gabriel's mention of finding a place to sit as a challenge, Anika strode off in haste and would've likely left him in the dust if he didn't keep pace. I was really hoping the coffee would help me through the day, but I think through the morning might be a bit more realistic. But even though he was running off of caffeine and a dream, he didn't find himself struggling to match her tempo as much as he expected to. At first he thought he was being given mercy in regards to how quickly they traversed through the halls, but it was unlikely at this point that the princess would slow down for anyone. The fact of the matter was that he was enjoying the manic energy she was bringing to the table, his smile remaining as they got to the library's doors.

Upon entering, Gabriel stood in awe of how massive this cornucopia of literature was. He'd been here a handful of times before, but never so early in the morning; the lack of people around really added to how small he felt in there. It was kind of nice in that way, though. It reminded him of the days he and his princess spent running through the halls of the palace without a care in the world. There was that same sense of urgency, too, but primarily for the most nonsensical of reasons. For a long time, it felt safe. It felt natural. There was a point in time where he felt as though he knew his way around the palace better than he did his own home. One time in particular, he'd joked about the hopes that he could one day have his birthday parties at the palace instead. Except, it wasn't really a joke.

Those times were so long ago, but it was so difficult to avoid reminiscing. Well, to certain points anyway. As they roamed through the library, he couldn't help but wonder if he'd left Anika with any good memories in the same way she had for him. Had he done enough to be a good friend to her in kind? He hadn't thought about it as a kid in the same way he could in the present, but had he been able to offer her the same shelter his time with her provided him? Because it wasn't about the glory or the majesty of being in the royal palace that made him love being there so much. It was about feeling safe. It was about not feeling so unheard and so alone. About having a friend.

" Did you know there’s a section for your works in here?"

"Huh? You're joking. Wait, for my articles or my novels?"

Judging by the way that Anika had so consistently been teasing him today, he hoped he had been able to offer some form of safety in return back then. The only response he got was a cheeky grin on the princess's face as she kept walking without skipping a beat. With a smirk, he followed alongside her as they neared a seating area. Anika seemed quite determined to find the best spot imaginable for them to sit, or something like that, as she took a long moment to peruse the seating arrangements. " Uh. This will do I suppose." Finally deciding upon a spot, she sat down at a table near one of the bookshelves, and he joined her there right after. Taking a moment to glance at the shelf, he could see the sign for the genre as clear as day: Fantasy.

Well, I guess that answers that.

Turning his attention back to Anika, he found her violet eyes to be staring into his very soul. " Come on now, I haven't got all day. If you have questions take a seat and ask them." Following her wishes, Gabriel took a seat across from her. Pulling off his shades, he tucked them into his sweater so he could look at his princess properly. He knew he was expected not to make her wait, nor did he want her to, so he asked the first question that came to his head.

"How have things been going in regards to her majesty?"

Way to ease yourself into things, Montgomery. Clearly, the interviewer in me is on vacation today.

Then again, he hadn't exactly wanted this to feel like an interview. He had to be impersonal back then, even when he desperately wanted to be anything but. But now, when he had the freedom and desire both to be as personal as he could be, he was finding it difficult. And while there certainly wasn't an easy way to bring up such subject matter, Gabriel felt ever so awkward about how he had chosen to. However, he was able to at least acknowledge that awkward was probably the best he could've managed, all things considered.

"Or we can start with something else, if you'd like. I know seeing someone in that sort of condition can be...hard. You can even give me your manifesto on the evils of plaid. Of anything."

Even pulling back felt awkward, but he felt it right to at least make the option available to her. There'd been many things in her life that she hadn't gotten an option for, and he really hadn't wanted this to be another one. He wanted things to be better this time, to be there for her if she could. Maybe that's part of why he went straight for the personal stuff; those were the things that mattered most in the end. And in his line of work, he'd seen a lot of ends.

Regardless, he kept his golden gaze on her the entire time. Since they'd been talking this morning, he noticed how easy it was to do. It wasn't as though shying away hadn't crossed his mind or anything, but he missed enough of Anika's life already. There was no reason to lose out on anymore of it if he didn't have to, and he hoped that he wouldn't ever have to again.

"Talking" "Thoughts"

Despite wanting to seem calm and collected it was clear the princess was as tense as ever. Sure, she could lie and say everything was fine but he already knew that wasn’t the case. Did he know that Syena was here too? Would even care to hear about her long rants about him anymore. Gabriel seemed so put together, even now as he looked tired and worse for wear he seemed more with it than she. There was too much to unpack in the hour before class she didn’t know where to begin.

Clenching her fist as she held back tears she started to speak, " I think we both know the answer to that. I lost my love and my best friend in the course of a five years." It felt wrong to admit that. It was true but her father would penalize her for ever admitting she needed someone. Missing Gabriel was something she was never allowed to talk about, there was no need for friends when you were queen. Nayeni had been made an exception for fear of pissing off the duchess’ parents but were they ever truly friends if Anika could barely stand her voice?

Looking at the man’s eyes she started to see how sunken in they were. He was just as defeated as she was, what point was there in yelling at him anymore? Sure, the night of the explosion it felt good temporarily but it ultimately made her feel empty. All of this anger needed to be taken out on someone but there wasn’t anyone to take it out on. Anika thought Syena could be the fuel for her rage but even he was more level-headed than she was. She knew her feelings of abandonment were childish but she couldn’t seem to get over them.

His comments about plaid made her heart feel slightly more at ease, a small smile returning once more as she looked at him. He was a fashion disaster, that was a fact. But why wouldn't he change that about himself? It wasn't like he didn't have the resources. Unless he was trying to make some sort of political statement by dressing up like a lowly commoner. Thankfully, the comment and thinking about his lack of style instincts was enough to let her go a little. Her fingernails had fully dug into her palms, leaving marks as she released them, " As much as I would love to talk about the fashion mishaps I see before me, I want to try and be a better person. I owe it to the one person I trusted all those years ago." She wasn’t used to being so serious but she did owe Gabriel an explanation.

He made conversation seem so easy, maybe that was from all his interviews. The duke in front of her didn’t seem like the same boy who wrote her stories anymore but that didn’t matter. If her lessons with Syena had taught her anything it was that looks were only a small part of the disguise. The Windurian Prince was a master of faking kindness and niceties that sometimes scared her when his real side would come out. Still, Anika knew that her personality wasn't the greatest but it didn't matter when she had so many people telling her how beautiful and fair she was. It was something Anika focused too heavily on. Not that she planned on changing her habits anytime soon, but she could at least try and understand why Gabriel would want to dress and parade around like some commoner.

Her next sentence was probably the most terrifying to admit, " To be honest, I think I can say confidently that besides looking amazing, my life is far from perfect." It wasn't like it was her fault or that she wasn't imperfection. If it was up to her instead of fate she wouldn’t even be at this stupid academy but it was either here or the throne and she hoped this would be more of a vacation than the nightmare it was turning out to be. Of course, the Fates had a twisted sense of humor but she wished they would pick a different target. Hadn’t she had enough tragedy in life? Enough torment?

" I am only speaking to you because I know you won’t tell my father,” Anika was curious if Gabriel knew why she was saying that. Had the news hit all of Musique yet or was the royal family trying to keep it under wraps? It was still weird to think about. How now her mother was ruling Musique alone. Would her uncle be any better as an advisor than her father? She doubted it. " I’m curious, what have you heard when you were away? What brought you here?" She wondered if he had much of a choice in coming here like she had. Or if it was forced upon the dukes and duchesses. His return a few years ago was so surprising Anika never got the chance to speak to him. But he was here now. And Anika was left feeling unprepared for what to ask, leaving Gabriel to take the lead for once.

                                                        GABRIEL ♫ MONTGOMERY
                                                        DUKE OF MUSIQUE

Tension built in the air in response to Gabriel's query, with the pair of himself and Anika sitting in awkward silence for a moment. As his princess sat there looking increasingly uncomfortable with the subject matter he presented to her, Gabe too struggled with his words. The vibrato of Anika's eyes reached a fever pitch, showing clear signs of hurt. He knew she was hurting, of course, but seeing it in such an honest manner was difficult to look at. He couldn't imagine the depth of suffering she'd gone through, but he couldn't imagine it being any better than his own. But it was undoubtedly harder for her; after all, he wasn't the one trying to answer to someone who'd abandoned him.

" I think we both know the answer to that. I lost my love and my best friend in the course of a five years."

While he did not turn his gaze away from her for a moment, the part of Gabriel that chooses flight over fight desperately told him to escape her violet sorrow for just a moment. However, he knew that she deserved better, so he persisted. They both did, he reminded himself. Much like with Arioso, a burnt bridge couldn't be rebuilt by twiddling thumbs. There was hard work that needed to be done both there and here, and from the tired look in both of their eyes, it was clear that neither one of them could do it alone. But that was the point, right? They weren't alone anymore. Anika always had her siblings, sure, but she'd very obviously had a strong attachment to him as well, one that he himself severed.

" As much as I would love to talk about the fashion mishaps I see before me, I want to try and be a better person. I owe it to the one person I trusted all those years ago."

Gabe let out a sniffled chuckle at how she started that statement, which trailed off as she continued. Realistically, she owed him nothing. He was the one that left her, after all. Even though it was difficult for him to experience, especially when their conversation had gotten more candid, he knew that he had earned her ire and then some. And yet, despite all the anger and sadness, she still spoke of him so fondly. While the princess did her best to fight back her tears, Gabe lost the war against his as a single one trailed down his cheek. It was joined shortly after by another from the opposite side, but the golden-eyed duke took a moment to acknowledge either. Too invested was how emotionally intimate Anika was allowing herself to be to acknowledge his own state, with his dear friend speaking towards the continued struggling that she experienced to this day.

"It's good that you don't just look amazing, then."

His voice was little more than a whisper, a soft reintroduction of his voice appropriate for the very vulnerable state they were both in. It was still terrifying to be so sincere with someone; he'd almost forgotten how to in the personal sense. He knew how to be forthright in regards to his work, and when he was with people like Sorya and even Nayeni, but with Anika, there was an immediate dread that seeped into his heart. But perhaps that was the point; was it really supposed to be easy? As he was sure he wrote down in one script or another, the most precious things in life never were.

Anika went on to make mention of her father and her continued trust in him. His eyes widened at the statement, a hand of his coming up to wipe away the tears he finally noticed. While it wasn't exactly the largest ask of the world, especially considering how critical he'd been regarding the direction Musique was taking during his days as a war journalist, it showed that she was willing to put her faith in him again. He smiled, somber eyes welling up again as he nodded.

                                                        "My lips are sealed."

" I’m curious, what have you heard when you were away? What brought you here?"

                                                        "Well..."

Gabriel took a deep breath. The urge to look away and find a place for his eyes to find shelter from her judgment came at him like a wolf lunging at its prey, but Gabe resisted. Anika had placed some bricks down, and now it was his turn.

"I wanted to do my part in securing peace for our nation. We've lost so much already, and it'd kill me to see future generations suffer the losses we did. Even regarding countries like Corthyr and Luna, if there was a role that I could play in ensuring conflicts between us never reached the heights that they did during the war then I wanted to be here to play it. And...if I'm being honest, this was the push I needed to finally try and speak to you again. "

Gabriel had been given greater reason to stay during his time here, of course, but when he had decided to enroll in this school, his people and his princess were the only things on his mind. He wasn't sure which one had pulled him towards the academy more back then, and even now he was still undecided. Regardless, he considered his time at Utopia to have so far been better than anything he could've asked for. Despite the tense moments every now and again, he had gotten to meet with Sorya and open up to her like he should've all those years ago. He was getting the opportunity to learn from so many brilliant minds, like the brilliant Professor Beckett. And he'd even finally gathered the courage to walk up to Anika like he should've done three years ago.

It seemed as though the urge to escape would forever be a part of him, but he was starting to understand the ways it seeped into his being. In being able to recognize the sensation of its fangs biting into him, Gabriel hoped he could continue getting better at ignoring its beckon call. Even if it'd been right to run away from home, which he would never feel 100% confident about, he was beginning to see that sometimes it was better to choose fight instead of flight. Some things were worth fighting for.

Gods, with lines like that rolling around in my head it's a wonder how I ever sold a single copy.

Bringing his hands together on the table, he leaned in slightly. He wanted it to be clear which choice he was making this time; for their friendship, Gabriel would fight. He'd do double the brickwork and pave the whole bridge himself as long as she was willing to let him. On that note, there was still more he wished to know regarding how things had been for her since he'd been away. Gabriel only hoped that Anika would forgive his ignorance.

"How have things been in regards to your father? Has he...treated you alright as of late? And your mother? How has her condition been?"

"Talking" "Thoughts"

Why was Anika always the one that had to be the strong one? The conversation had just begun and Gabriel was already in tears. The blubbering fool was going to get them kicked out if he continued to let his emotions get the better of him. Hadn’t the fall of Arioso taught him anything? Vulnerability led to weakness, and weakness led to destruction; Anika couldn’t risk anything else in her life destructing anymore.

The promise of sealed lips was something she had heard before. Something that normally led to her reprogramming. But the sad, sorrowful look in his eyes and the low whisper of his voice made her want to go against her better judgment. The princess found herself wanting to stay, even if just to prove a point that she was the one who had. If she was to walk away from this conversation how did that make her any better than those who had left her as many had?

Anika pursed her lips in response to his comments about his arrival. She had hoped he would say something about how he had come to rectify his friendship with her but knew all too well those were feelings of a teenager, not a future queen. With Nayeni at her side, there wasn’t a need for his services anymore. Why bother with someone who wasn’t completely devoted to making her life happy by any means? It was better to have yes-men, wasn’t it?

"- And...if I'm being honest, this was the push I needed to finally try and speak to you again. "

The sound of her heart dropping was so loud that Anika was sure the duke had heard it. Her lip twitched as she attempted to hide the smile forming as her dark heart faded for the new one to form. He was good. No wonder his book had done so well, given how well-spoken he had become. Anika wondered if the hobo looks, and nervous ticks were just a persona like hers but knew she was the only one with something to hide.

The urge to run or to start rebuilding the wall between them was strong as she felt he had just removed one small brick and the whole thing was starting to fall apart. Maybe it was just because it felt like with her life lately. Up was down, left was right, and the people she criminalized were just… human. She gave them so much power over her failures and missteps but there was none. Gabriel didn’t know what he had done when he left. There was no way he knew what would happen when he left. It was her idea to stage her disappearance after all. But she had been blaming him all this time… why? "Because he told me friends were a waste of my energy. They led to my own destruction"

"How have things been in regards to your father? Has he...treated you alright as of late? And your mother? How has her condition been?"

Anika tried to not look totally shaken by the question but was sure the surprised look on her face lasted long enough for the man to take notice. Was Gabriel a mind reader now? There was her father’s voice telling her it was a trap. That he was only asking because he already knew what had become of her father, he was a writer after all. What would be a better story than the downfall of a corrupt and unjust king? But his voice, his nervous hand movements, they were so familiar, Gabriel had changed yes but there were still the signs of the soft gentle boy from her childhood who would listen to her rants and rambles until the Sun went down.

Not quite willing to give everything up just yet, she cocked her head to side slighting, trying to assess his true motives but couldn’t see any malicious intent. Her father would have told her it was her emotions getting the better of her, but she wanted to try and listen to her heart once more. " My father?" She croaked out, unsure how to phrase her next sentence knew she would have to start practicing dodging this question as more and more people would start to ask, " We haven’t spoken much since my arrival. His priority was taking care of our queen after all," she felt herself dissociating from her own body as she spoke. Anika rarely spoke of her mother as she barely saw her due to her condition. Her father felt as though being around her and her siblings was too much for Her Majesty to bear most days.

It was like word vomit was she started talking about it. Especially with Gabriel, some habits never died. " Her condition has worsened as of late. There have been talks about me returning to Musique to help the transition." She bit her lip in an attempt to stop herself from tearing up at the thought. She didn’t want to go but if her mother passed there wasn’t any choice. She had already started doing some duties from the comforts of Syena’s side but knew it wasn’t enough. If her father was still alive it might have been another story for her to rule secretly from Utopia but there was no line of communication for what was happening in Musique as her mother’s condition worsened after her father’s sudden passing.

Maybe it was better to switch the playing field. This conversation was already starting to make her heart race more and more. As much as listening pained her it was potentially better for her well-being if she gave it a try, " And you? Have you been able to connect with the Montgomery's since your return?" As she thought more about it, Anika hadn’t seen Gabriel’s mother much since his disappearance but blamed that on her father accusing Gabriel of her disobedience.

                                                        GABRIEL ♫ MONTGOMERY
                                                        DUKE OF MUSIQUE

This was a lot. Having Anika's ever-intense gaze on him after all these years, all the pain that they had both suffered in the time between...it was all so much to take in. And from the way their voices joined together to form a bittersweet harmony, Gabriel could tell that his princess felt similarly. It was strange; in some ways they were so fundamentally different from one another, and yet he couldn't shake the feeling that she was something like they were reflections of one another all the same. That was probably why it'd been so difficult to get into contact with her. If he had, he'd also have to confront himself.

Perhaps it was all that had gone on during the night of the explosion that had previously distracted him from that, but now it truly was just the two of them. Every now and again, his mind would play tricks on him and flash glimpses of the two of them at sixteen in place of the adults they both were every now and again. There were reflections to be seen there as well, as the sullen expressions they shared weren't new faces to show one another. The years may have taken additional tolls on both of them, but the sadness wasn't anything new to either of them; just the sheer depth of it.

Gabriel tried to offer her a reassuring smile, as if to display support for Anika should she choose to respond to him or not, but he wasn't quite sure if he was doing a good job of it. As kids, he was great at putting on smiles—for his mother, for the country, and sometimes even for Anika. He didn't always want to show that he was hurting, nor was he often allowed to. When it was with Ani, he was often scared to be hurt. For a while, he worried that his only use to her was to be an escape for her own worries. And if he couldn't be that, then he wouldn't be worth having around. That ended up not being true, but he only came to know that after years of doubt.

" My father? We haven’t spoken much since my arrival. His priority was taking care of our queen after all,"

Gabriel had gotten so lost in his thoughts there that he shook a little bit as her words brought him back to reality. Whatever the case was all those years ago, he reminded himself of two things. One, that the only person to determine his worth was himself. And two, that Anika's ability to open up to him after all that she'd been through meant a lot all the same. " Her condition has worsened as of late. There have been talks about me returning to Musique to help the transition." That made sense, but there was a selfish part of Gabe that had wished what he just heard wasn't true. It wasn't just for the sake of the queen either, although he knew her to be a far better parent to Ani than her father was. He'd just gotten his best friend back, and he didn't want to lose her again. Nothing might be keeping him here, and in a way it would be poetic for him to take off with her this time. However, he had much that he wanted to see through at this school that he didn't want to jeopardize by leaving. Others here that he also never wanted to part from again.

I suppose I really am a Leo after all.

" And you? Have you been able to connect with the Montgomery's since your return?"

And just like that, Anika had brought a tear to his eye again. Had she really not known? Now that I think about it, though, I suppose that checks out. Being on the warfront hadn't offered her much time to gather information on what was going on, and their duchy was so meager that it might not have mattered either way. And even if she had gotten more time at home, would it have mattered? That she knew at all that he'd returned was to be expected, but from how he understood the way that he'd hurt her, Gabriel wasn't sure that she'd have wanted much else to do with him. With a sigh, he broke eye contact. A sign of weakness from how they were taught, but he couldn't help it. It was a lot.

"I was able to, yes, but...my mother died shortly after I returned. From the same illness your mother's been afflicted with, from what I understand."

He didn't break away from her gaze for long, though, as his golden eyes returned to the nostalgic view that was the woman who used to be the only person he'd even think to share his true feelings with. Even if he hadn't always done so, she had shown him in the end that his fears had been unfounded. Or at least, what was once the end. Still, he couldn't exactly just sit there and reminisce. He had more to say on the matter, as much as it hurt to do so.

"It was kinda funny at first, actually; I thought to myself that with the condition she was in, she'd only been able to hold on out of spite. Waiting for me to return so she could unleash the full extent of her anger on the child that had left her."

Ending that with a shrug and a dry chuckle, his self-amusement was a rather short solo that could only serve to lighten the mood for so long. "No, it was actually...well, I learned a lot from her in those final moments." His hands nervously clenched one another as he leaned down with his arms on the table. "At the end, she asked me if I could forgive her. I...I didn't know how to respond. In reality, the only one with anger in that room was me. I couldn't...I couldn't do it. And now, whether I'll ever want to in the future or not, that opportunity's been lost to me." Finding something to do with his hands other than fidget as another tear trailed his face, he wiped both cheeks yet again.

"Sorry, I got a little ramble-y there. I hope I haven't caused your worry for your mother to get worse. I know it took Reika as well, but if there's anyone who'd be able to beat it, it's your mother. She's a force of nature, unstoppable. Just like you are."

Sitting up a bit from his slouch, he smiled again. And this time, he felt more confidence in it. "Just don't let me hear that you've let such praise to get to your head too much, alright? As I told you before, I'm gonna do my best to keep you honest. Here, shall we make it a proper promise?" With that, he offered her his own pinky as if they were those two kids again. They might not have been, but did that have to lessen the legitimacy of a pinky promise?

"And don't go thinking you can write your way out of this either, ok? I wrote a 'cannot-be-fired' clause in my notebook. It's in invisible ink, but it's there," he teased. Really though, he hoped that she would be comfortable with their current dynamic. After all, it wasn't like he had any actual sway on the matter. Still, what was the point of being together again if they couldn't joke with each other every now and again? That's what friends were for, wasn't it?

"Talking" "Thoughts"

Shell-shocked couldn’t even begin to explain how Anika was feeling about learning Gabriel’s mother's passing. Why had no one told her? Anika was supposed to be the future queen, why were so many secrets being kept from her? The past few years she had blamed the duke’s lack of presence due to his inability to admit his wrongdoings but he truly had been busy. Why had her father not told her? What other secrets had the king been hiding from her in order to keep her in line?

Flooded with thoughts of irrationality, she felt her eyes start to water once again. Looking at the crestfallen duke only cemented her inability to no longer hold them in. The more he spoke the harder it was to look at him, his sincerity wasn’t something Anika had heard often from men in Musique. The only honest man she could think of was… Syena. And the mysteries surrounding him were taking up most of her compartmentalization. Now her father’s death and Gabriel’s confession… How many burdens had the gods wanted her to bear? It was simply… " Unfair." Not realizing the last of her thoughts had escaped her along with a stream of tears.

Of course, he was trying to make the misery of his life into some joke. All of the Musique royal had been taught that they needed to keep their hearts hidden but the sullen look on his face, combined with the hot tears falling down her own face, it was clear the two of them were broken. Anika hoped this hadn’t been Gabe’s intention when he had wanted to speak to her but thinking about how much she had trusted her father after she felt everyone else had abandoned her it was hard to tell.

Fidgeting with her bracelet as he spoke more about her mother’s strength, Anika felt herself cracking a smile. " He’s trying to comfort me over my mother who is still alive after I was so intent on holding a grudge I didn’t even know his had passed. Is this what strength is supposed to feel like?" she wondered, pushing the heart of her gold-plated bracelet into her skin before looking back at him. It was never this hard to make eye contact with a man before coming here but now all of these… feelings made it impossible to look him in the eye.

Blotting her eyes, she looked at the boy’s hand. " A pinky promise… I haven’t done one of those since he left." She stared at the boy’s finger a bit longer, unsure how to process everything that had been said to her. Looking at her hands they were shaking, her whole body was, how was he smiling after everything he had gone through? Why wasn’t he angry like she was? He was supposed to hate her, she had hated him all these years. " I never break my promises." Extending her pinky and interlocking it with his, she attempted to smile through the sniffles, " Don’t tell anyone you saw me cry." She forced a laugh before tugging the boy’s hand and wrapping her free arm around him, pulling him on top of her into a hug. " And don’t please leave me again." she whispered.

Her heart tightened as she pressed her face into Gabriel's shoulder, this was nice. It had been so long since the two of them had hugged. Since he told her his final goodbyes when she expected to never see him again. Anika longed to go back to that time when she didn't feel this hole in her heart, telling her that he would soon leave. She wanted to trust the feeling of his body pressed against hers. Her father was incredibly wrong, it was her that didn't deserve to have him in her life.

                                                        GABRIEL ♫ MONTGOMERY
                                                        DUKE OF MUSIQUE

From the way that Anika couldn't bring herself to look at him for a long while, Gabriel could tell that his words had caused her some form of distress. As her eyes were drawn to his pinky, Gabriel felt his heart begin to sink further than it had already had. He hoped that she didn't blame herself for not knowing or something; that wasn't on her. So much wasn't. Should I have held off with the details, then? No, that wouldn't have been better in the long run. There were walls the two of them were taught to make impenetrable; he simply didn't know what to do when he saw one crumble. To show weakness was an opportunity for others to gain an advantage over you, his mother would often tell him. And as right as she may have been in certain situations, this was not one of those times.

Then again, he had gotten to live outside of that sphere of influence. Connect with others in ways he never would've been allowed to back home. But Anika never got that opportunity. Would she—

" I never break my promises."

The sensation of his princess's finger interlocked with his melted any bits of fear that still desperately clung to him. " Don’t tell anyone you saw me cry." His waning smile once again grew wide. Sharing in her laughter, he felt her head rest against him as she eased them into a hug, and it was like the last measure of a melody long left behind had been written. Gabriel wasn't entirely sure if he'd done enough to be deserving of such forgiveness or of anything he had been granted since he came to this school, but he was going to do his best to try. In his head, a repeat bar was added to the hugging section; selfish as it might've been, he wanted it to last a little while. It was something he'd dearly missed.

" And don’t please leave me again."

"Not a chance, Ani. Not a chance."

For a long, quiet phrase, Gabriel held onto his dearest friend with the tightness of someone who thought he'd never get to hold her again. He had dreamed of a day like this, but for a long time it just didn't seem feasible. Not without him getting caught and sent back to his duchy, anyway. He let that excuse distort any attempt at getting contact with her, as he often let his fear do, but it didn't matter anymore. While he still had concerns, he wasn't going to let that stop him from being with the ones he cared about. Not anymore.

That being said, it had gotten kind of awkward to keep hugging over a table like they had been. So, eventually, he did let go of her. "I do believe it's my turn to lead you somewhere. Come with me." Offering the princess his arm to lock hers with, he brought her over to a section of the library that housed vinyl records that the students could take on a loan. "It would seem as though I'm not the only one whose work has been immortalized in these halls." Gabriel then flicked through the various records to find the one he'd been looking for. As luck would have it, the particular one he had in mind was missing. Still, there was more than enough of Anika's discography there to pick out a particularly poignant gem. Taking an early one out, though not her first as he'd initially planned, Gabe displayed it to her with a faint, bittersweet smile.

"I had a collection of these myself back in Arioso, but they uh...they didn't make it."

It was a miracle that Gabriel had, really, but he still wished that he had more to show for his time there than just himself. So much was lost to that night of wanton destruction that he'd never get back. And just as so much had been robbed from him that night, Gabriel couldn't imagine the countless evenings Anika had been stuck living the life her father forced upon her. He'd thought collecting her music was a form of tribute to their friendship, but now he wondered if that too was a product of his fears. As much as her music helped people, it came at the expense of her own happiness. A cruel fate for someone he knew to be so kind.

"I can't imagine these were produced under the best circumstances, but for whatever it's worth, I listened to every track, and they're all really beautiful. Powerful even. I'd done quite a bit of traveling before coming back, and anyone who heard your music said the same thing. And by the look of things, you're starting to amass a fan or two here."

Gabe double-checked the row of albums. He'd only gone by here once before, afraid the gods would send Anika upon him if he were to continue tempting fate, but the missing album today was different from the one back then. Had someone been slowly working their way through her discography? "I might be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's one person at the moment. What do you think? Might they be a secret admirer or something?" Gabriel joked as he looked back over to his princess with a more playful expression. For whatever pain might have gone into making these songs, he hoped that his friend could take comfort in the positive impact they brought both to her people and this mystery listener.

"Talking" "Thoughts"

Taking the duke’s arm, Anika wasn’t sure where Gabriel would lead her. She hoped it was back to her room so she could freshen up before class but knew that was probably not that case. It had been so long since she had allowed herself to cry like this she didn’t know what to do with herself. All she could do was trust that Gabriel wouldn’t use her weakness against her like her father told her most men would. Like her father had used against her. Could she still claim to be strong if she let the tears still continue to flow down her face?

Looking at her own section was something that Anika was guilty of doing the first week of school just impressed to see how much there was. But hearing that Gabriel had a collection of his own, before the invasion of Arioso, was too sweet. All the time she had spent hating him for abandoning her he had never let her go. She had been so wrong. " I am sorry Gabriel, the kingdom had no idea Corthyr was planning something so… Distasteful. But I am sure that was the whole point." She muttered the last part more softly as she attempted to calm herself.

The fall of Arioso was one of the worst things that had happened to Musique and Anika had never forgiven herself for not visiting afterward just because she was still caught up on her own issues. She had promised to look out for Gabriel’s mother but instead sent others in her stead and couldn’t help but blame herself for the downfall of the nation. An apology meant nothing when what she should have been doing was begging for forgiveness but she could barely look at him for the “I’m sorry” The idea of her getting on her knees was a joke.

Grabbing one of the albums of the shelves she looked at the fiery girl on the cover, wondering where the fire went. It was still there but not the same burning flame that hurt everything it touched. Gabriel was giving her too much grace because he couldn’t forgive himself either, the least she could do was give him something. He had lost almost as much as she had at this point, whatever he wanted she would give him. Showing the man the album, " You know one of the songs on here is about you. I’ll leave it to you to figure out which considering you’re such a fan after all." She chuckled as she handed it to him before thinking more about what he had said.

Anika knew she had fans but here at Utopia? It had to be one of the servants. But they didn’t have library access. Or did they? Her attempt to make everything not about herself was not working well. In all fairness, he had taken her to a section dedicated to her but still. " A secret admirer? Anyone who was truly my admirer would know I am not much for secrets. It would be better if the coward would just come out and ask for an autograph." She scoffed at the idea of some nobody from Thah planning to propose to her. Originally the idea of someone admiring her from afar would have been something she would have dreamed about growing up but now she only wanted the eyes of one person but she would have to wait for those dreams to come true.

" Speaking of admirers, how many people know about Alain Miranda?" Since they were in a library her voice was already low but sensing this was a more sensitive topic for him she attempted to lower her voice even more. She still was surprised he had given up his secret up to her so quickly but if he was being honest about wanting them to start fresh it was better for her to get all the facts so she didn’t cause him any trouble. Anika was used to the spotlight, and thrived under it, but knew that wasn’t the case for everyone. Especially Gabriel who dressed more like he was the one pointing the stage lights.

Gabriel couldn't help but notice the wistful twinkle in Anika's eye as she looked at the album of hers that she took out. Had there been some memories within all that pain that brought her some sense of joy? Some scene worth another read-through? In a way, Gabriel hoped so. He hadn't thought of that period of time for her in that way before. Maybe that was wrong of him. But with what he had to go off of, he hadn't been given much reason to think differently.

That being said, he didn't have all the details. He had some knowledge of the kind of horrors the princess must have been a witness to on the front lines, but not of her triumphs. He knew of the inferno that was Anika Alto and of the sparks that lit that flame, but not what it burned. And when she'd playfully mentioned a song of hers being inspired by him, Gabriel was at a loss as to how to take it. "Huh?" Was it a song of hope? Despair? Entirely justified rage? If there was one thing Anika seemed to remember well about him, it was how to make his anxiety flare up with a single statement.

It was one form of anxiety that he dearly missed. Well, when it was like this anyway.

As their conversation shifted towards the topic of the mystery listener, Gabriel did his best to contain a laugh at just how offended Anika became towards this person. " A secret admirer? Anyone who was truly my admirer would know I am not much for secrets. It would be better if the coward would just come out and ask for an autograph." He'd handled himself well enough with the statement by itself, but the scoff did him in just a bit. "I'll have our greatest spies on it at once, milady. This troublemaker will be found," said Gabriel with just a hint of whimsy.

" Speaking of admirers, how many people know about Alain Miranda?"

"No one besides Nayeni. At least, not that I know of."

Gabriel let out a sigh. "I'm sure some others might know by now, though. Journalists I've traveled with. Survivors. I've tried making as few public appearances as possible since my return, but that might not have been enough." Gabriel's voice had gained a bit of heaviness to it. Hiding the way he did when he left just to return and hide some more was...frustrating. He had his reasons for doing so, of course. He hadn't exactly been the kindest voice in regards to the royal court as Alain, so it helped to avoid any unnecessary animosity from bubbling up. On the high society side of things, Gabriel did his best not to speak much at all on the five years he'd been away. It was difficult at first, all eyes being on him after years of speculation as to why he'd disappeared to begin with.

But as time passed, things got easier. Not easy, but easier. He had responses prepared so well you'd think he was a performer himself. But the stage was not for him, or at least not like that. More than anything, he wished to speak his truth. In a way, that pattern of deflection probably contributed to him not reaching out to the people he knew he could trust for all that time.

No, he wouldn't use that as an excuse. Gabriel messed up, and he would have to find a way to come to terms with that. Come to terms with everything. But that couldn't be done if he kept waiving himself of responsibility. Forcing a smile back up, he looked towards the collection of Anika's vinyls. "Since it seems you'd prefer a more upfront approach from your fans, would you be interested in doing some listening with me sometime?" Gabe paused for a moment, turning back to face Anika. He put his hand lightly on the vinyl of hers that she was holding, dragging his index finger down as he made a note of this particular album's song list.

"If you'd feel comfortable doing so, anyway. I just sort of figured we could do that, I could show or even read you some of my work, and we could catch up in that way as well if you're interested."

He still wasn't sure what to make of what parts of her life that Anika felt some sort of bitter nostalgia for, but he'd like to be. Gabriel wanted to understand his friend and the time they were apart as best as he could. He wanted her to know without a shadow of a doubt that he was on her side. And that, no matter what, he'd be by her side as well. There was a little bit of that song curiosity too, sure, but there were far more concerning matters at hand. For almost a decade, Gabriel only made assumptions as to what had to have been going on in Ani's head throughout all the suffering she'd been through. There would be no more of that.

He might make a case for plaid again, though. It had only been a few days, but he was already starting to miss those parts of his wardrobe.
