Hatenna was being so mean to Yseult and it simply wasn’t fair.

The desynchronization between the main series Pokémon games and what got dropped in Pokémon Go didn’t annoy her as much as it did some players. Something something, intellectual property. Something something, licensing whatevers. She didn’t really understand the ins and outs of the legal side of it, but it all sounded like very fair reasons for why more of the Galar Pokédex was only getting released now, almost five years after Sword and Shield had first dropped for the Switch.

What Yseult didn’t understand was why the cute little pink-blue-and-white babies she loved so much kept eluding her. Yes, she’d caught some of them since they’d released into Pokémon Go last week (enough that she could have evolved two of them and still had some Hatenna Candy left over). But Hatterene was one of the Pokémon that came in the colors of the trans flag, so Yseult simply wasn’t content with having enough of them. Accidents had wound up with her not having class today (one instructor had a family emergency, and the other had gone to some new night-club on a Sunday night and wound up super hungover). So, she’d put on a cute skirt and her comfy, pink hi-tops with the designs of Sylveon and shiny Sylveon, and headed out on the town.

Now, several hours and a break for lunch later, she’d found some of the little guys, but not nearly as many as she’d hoped to find. Skulking into an alley she knew very well, Yseult slumped back against the wall, and clicked into one of her favorite gyms (attached to the really good Lebanese takeout place across the street). Team Valor currently had the gym, which was good for Yseult. Time to kick them out of the gym and claim it for Team Mystic.

Dimly, she sort of noticed the mirror leaning against the wall opposite her. But she noticed it in the way that you’d notice a classmate always sitting in the same spot in lecture. The mirror was there, that was nice, but it was just a mirror and probably not anything weird, so Yseult didn’t pay it much mind.

Honestly, Leona wished that there was some kind of radar device that would let you know if there was someone outside of the mirror or not. This was the second time in so many days that she exited a mirror, expecting to be alone and there was a rando civilian just sitting there…and this one, looked like she was engrossed in a phone game or some kind of texting…thing, and Leona thought for a moment, and then began to try and tiptoe past the girl, carefully stepping over the legs that were in her way.

When she took a quick glance at the phone screen, because…who was she kidding. She was about as subtle as a punch to the gut, she blinked.

“Oh man, I haven’t played that since it came out! I didn’t even realize it was still going!”

Well. So much for just…leaving.

Yseult had been trying to pick a mon to leave in the gym (Slaking……or Blissey, Slaking……or Blissey, probably Slaking, they had a better Attack stat, but did she want to leave one that knew Earthquake as its charged move, or one that knew Play Rough……) when she thought she saw something weird out of the corner of her eye. Something unnatural. She didn’t want to pay it any mind. Didn’t want to give attention to some shiny new example of Destiny City trying to make her regret moving here.

But she was pretty sure that the surfaces of mirrors were not supposed to look so much like liquid.

Nor were they supposed to have people just step out of them. The fact that the cute girl who walked out of the mirror had such a pretty outfit on didn’t really help much, because she should not have come out of the Mirror in the first place.

Fortunately for Leona, though, she’d noticed and started talking about something that did work to distract Yseult.

“Oh yeah, it’s still hanging on, despite Niantic’s best efforts,” she said, angling her phone a bit toward the other girl, so she could see all the spawns around them. “I think they’re kinda starting to resent only being known for Pokémon Go and their Harry Potter game? But people have been abandoning the Harry Potter game anyway ever since JK Rowling started getting super crazy into radical transphobia, so Niantic has only really been able to make people mad by doing unpopular things in PoGo. And they release enough cool new things to maintain a decent amount of goodwill with players, like……”

Yseult trailed off briefly, brightening up as a new spawn popped up by a nearby Poké-Stop, one of the exact little pink babies she’d been hunting all day. “Like Hatenna,” she said, eagerly clicking on it. “They’re releasing a lot of the Galar babies right now. I’ve spent all day chasing Hatennas.”

There had been a Harry Potter game? What was a Hatenna? Leona nodded and smiled politely, as she did when she…had absolutely no idea what was going on, but she hesitated and then sank to the ground, looking over the girl’s shoulder.

“I…know who Pikachu is. Is that still a thing? I don’t think I’ve played a real Pokemon game since…” She looked thoughtful, trying to remember. She had only ever played one and it had been neat but. “...Black and White? I think? There was the green haired guy…M or something, I don’t really remember. It was fun. I don’t remember that Hatenna in it…”

She hesitated, watching for a few moments. “I didn’t know there was a Harry Potter game out either…also I didn’t realize that the company did anything besides Pokemon Go…but then again…”

It was a cute little thing. She didn’t know what Galar was, but. Whatever it was, the Hatenna was cute.
