Laeradr was grateful that his life seemed to be settling down again. Things were easing in his civilian life. Maybe not so much in his powered life—the war seemed to be never ending—but he could handle that a lot better now that he was getting a proper amount of rest and all that healthy junk, ugh. He shook himself out, stretching some, and then continued on his patrol, trying to be ready for anything. Anyone. He was a Squire, he could handle a fair amount of things on his own, and if he couldn't, he had an emergency note ready to be plucked from his subspace and shoved at his signet ring in a couple of seconds. Hopefully he'd have those two seconds if it came down to it.

Then, of course, he saw the youma, and it was so repulsive to look at that he actually stopped to stare at it for a long moment. What the heck?! It looked like someone mashed a unicorn that had dwarfism with a weird little snake. His jaw actually dropped, cane held loosely at his side (whereas before he'd been swapping between swinging it around merrily or holding it up menacingly) as he stared at the ugly little creature.

"What the ********," he finally managed to say, still absolutely flabbergasted. His flabbers were gasted!! Absolutely gasted!!!

Amylthia hadn’t been attached to Captain Andesine very long, but she’d already gotten to like this arrangement that they had. Going out with an Agent made Destiny City feel so much safer for the little youma. As much as she didn’t like to acknowledge the hindrances posed by her size, they did exist and Amylthia did know this; that knowledge fueled much of her tendency to yarp and snap at anybody who looked like she needed to fight them. Whether or not her potential challengers took her up on the call to fight her varied, but in her heart, Amylthia knew that she would succeed in any of these encounters, if they ever got a chance to happen. No matter who the others were or what they thought they could do or how massively big they were, Amylthia would fight them so hard that they would wish she had not fought them so hard.

But now, she had fewer things to worry about. In situations where she couldn’t hold her own, she had an Agent who cared for her and looked out for her. Andesine could fight the nasties whom Amylthia couldn’t handle on their own (however few in number they really were, at least in Amylthia’s own mind), and she provided Amylthia with a steady supply of snacks in the form of starseeds. Which was what they were up to tonight: some jumped up little basic senshi dolled up in the bleach white shade of White Moon senshi bodysuit had tried to come for Andesine while she’d been draining energy, thinking far too much of their own abilities, and had swiftly wound up with a hand shoved into their chest.

While Amylthia frolicked eagerly, triumphantly bouncing up and down on the once-quite-active senshi’s inert chest (even though she admittedly hadn’t done much of anything), Andesine perked up in a distinctly less pleasant way. Another White Moon aura was out and about in the park. Frowning, Andesine narrowed her eyes. She looked around, scanning the park around them for the source. The streetlamps’ light danced off Amylthia’s black fur, giving it the oil spill iridescent sheen that it got in the right circumstances, and if she felt the aura, she didn’t seem to show it. One of Andesine’s hands curled tight around the starseed—she’d pulled it out fair and square, as a special treat for her little unicorgi, and nobody else could take it—while the other hand curled just as tight around the handle of Andesine’s meteor hammer. Whoever thought they wanted to tangle with Andesine, they’d have Hell to pay.

At least he made himself obvious soon enough: a gangly squire in a flashy outfit and the blues and greens associated with Neptune Knights (with a ponytail that matched his outfit surprisingly well), about Andesine’s same height and carrying a cane. And he was acting as though he’d never seen a youma before, which made Andesine roll her eyes.

“She’s a youma,” Andesine drawled, her tone exceptionally pointed and making clear that she was mentally adding dumbass to the end of that sentiment. “She’s my friend too, so keep any negative opinions to yourself if you don’t want to fight about it.”

By way of illustrating what she meant, Andesine held up her meteor hammer. It looked like a bell, but it had to be heavier and more effective than his stupid cane. Meanwhile, Amylthia finally noticed the squire and rounded to face him, baring her fangs and snarling, swishing her snake-scaled tail and its tuft of violet fur with a menace that felt somewhat at odds with the cute, carefree way she’d been prancing on a dead senshi’s corpse-husk not moments before.

Laeradr startled a bit at the voice, then backed up when the youma growled at him, all tense, fur prickled, aggression dripping from every part of its body.

"Well I can see that," he snarked to the officer, glowering at her and keeping a peripheral eye on the youma in case it decided it wanted to just attack without permission. He didn't know how much control a Captain could really have over youmas, and he wasn't about to find out the hard way.

"How about you give that poor senshi their starseed back, and I won't have to dust your precious youma?" he threatened, hand tightening on his cane as he raised it slightly.

With a thoroughly unimpressed expression, Andesine watched the little squire humiliate himself. Backing away from them at the slightest bit of growling out of Amylthia, acting like he was some bored suburban housewife about to start screaming her head off over a spider existing in her general vicinity, trying to put on this tough façade as though it wasn’t perfectly transparent. Indeed, Andesine had seen panes of glass with more opacity than this Squire.

“Your whole big tough guy routine works so much better when you commit to the bit,” she pointed out, pushing herself up to standing. “Perhaps you need an opportunity think about the consequences of challenging your betters. Amylthia?”

The little youma yarped, less as a challenge, more as an affirmation that she was listening.

“Would you like to earn a senshi snack?” Another yarp from Amylthia, just as Andesine had expected. She smirked, eyes glimmering dangerously as she lifted the chain of her meteor hammer and started twirling the ball around. “Then, let’s get him together. Just like we’ve practiced.”

Thankfully, they’d moved beyond the need for countdowns. Andesine let loose with her meteor hammer, swinging it toward the Squire and calling on the power of that spell her weapon had absorbed back in January. As the magical force moved toward the Squire, so too did Amylthia, unhinging her jaw and lunging for his arm.

Forgotten Spell: At will, Andesine whips her meteor hammer and swings it at one target within a 20-foot radius, but does not hit them physically. Instead of physical damage, they are assaulted by a wave of magical force powerful enough to bowl over unsuspecting targets. A hallucination accompanies the force-wave: a powerful smell of rot, something like an uncleaned charnel house in the middle of an extremely humid August. This smell is incredibly unpleasant but illusory; it deals no extra damage and can be recognized as an illusion with focus from the target.

Amylthia’s Bite Attack: In addition to being painful, at will, Amylthia can make her bites cause mild hallucinations: for 15 seconds, victims' limbs will seem to rapidly rot and wither, as if watching a sped-up long exposure of decomposition. While these hallucinations may be upsetting, they do not deal additional damage and with focus, they can be recognized as hallucinations. Any lasting damage from Amylthia's bite attacks is up to player discretion.

Laeradr flinched, arm moving up to protect his face from the leaping dog. He was hit with the hammer's magic, as well, and with the last bit of concentration he had, he swung his cane with his free hand, trying to call on his own magic—

Fear. Fear and rot and oh god his hands were shriveling up, the bite burned where the stupid dog youma had lunged and sank its teeth into his arm except now there was no flesh for there to be a bite—

Concentrate. Right foot, left foot, now go even faster— His body shifted backwards and lower to the ground. Everything you have, everything you are, you've got to give— He lashed out with his cane, hoping to smack one of the two beings attacking him, then started to slam it against the ground in a beat that matched the pace of the song he was using to center to himself.

Quote:
As he taps and twirls it in his hands rhythmically, a rush of sound sweeps through the area. It doesn't sound like any kind of music anyone has ever heard and it's strange and otherwordly. It's a little hard to think while it plays because it's so unusual and disorienting. The magic affects every enemy within an eight foot radius, and can last for up to 30 seconds.

Oh, that magic was unpleasant, but it didn’t matter. Andesine felt like her head would split open from the unearthly noise—a sentiment that Amylthia clearly echoed, based on how she whined—but she managed to stash the starseed in her subspace while the Squire was distracted. Although she imagined it wasn’t very dignified for poor Amlythia, Andesine picked the youma up as though she actually were a corgi.

“Let’s get out of here—”

“Wait wait,” Amylthia yipped, throwing on a pair of big, sparkly eyes (their effectiveness undercut only somewhat by the fact that her forked tongue flicked up and out of her snout, slobbering all over one of her eyes). “Silly Neptune squire lost! Rub it in his faaaaace!”

Although she sighed at the request, Andesine turned back to the Squire anyway. “Looks like your magic can’t get a starseed back for you,” she told him, tugging on one of her eyelids and sticking out her tongue. “Nyeh!”

It wasn’t the best note to teleport out on, but Amlythia wiggled happily in her arms, and Andesine had gotten the starseed.

Damnit, damnit, damnit!

He sank to his knees after the stupid b***h left, breathing heavily and staring at his completely normal flesh. He'd let a senshi die. Right in front of him.

He hadn't been able to save a life tonight. And that would haunt him.
