One day turned into two, then three, then four, and René was staying over at Alexandre’s more often than he was staying in his apartment. He still went by to check the mail and pay his rent but otherwise, he was enjoying staying closer to his little blonde. He’d met a few of the other cousins at this point as well and it seemed that they were all pretty different but they all had that same blonde hair and blue eyes even if the shades differed slightly. An issue started bothering him though because it made him feel stuck and he didn’t like that at all. It wasn’t good to jump things on Alexandre even if they had sort of jumped things on him here and there. After the whole space trip, he started staying over more but the fact that his lease would run out soon started to make him sweat. While he was at work he started to look into other places near his shop but he didn’t really know what would work out. Even though he had more of his paperwork for things due to Alexandre’s efforts, he was still at a loss for some things and didn’t really know the landlords or areas compared to others. Apparently he would have to fight against the students for lodgings and the prospect of it made him stress. It wasn’t really like him to stress so he tried to shake it off each night by doing things that helped him relax with Alexandre. It was also nice that they cooked since he could always have something warm to eat when he finished up with work. It wasn’t something he had expected but he did enjoy it. Tonight had been especially bothersome after he’d spent time on the phone for three hours trying to figure out what forms he needed to fill while struggling to understand the odd american accent of the woman on the other side of the phone. It ended up being fruitless and he’d sipped a bit more of his wine before locking up the store and heading over to Alexandre’s place. The drive was easy for once due to the rain and he figured the other might be curled up with a fire going. It sounded like a good idea to just lay with them and get a bit of peace for the night but this problem of his kept gnawing at him. He couldn’t just live with Alexandre, they already shared the home with Hudson and he also liked the idea of having a place to go on the off chance they left him again. He didn’t want to not have a back up plan, he didn’t want to have to go back to Versailles because he knew his ex was probably still looking for him.

He knew Rene was stressing out, it wasn’t hard to spot, and he knew why. He knew the other had an apartment, even if he’d never seen the place, but he knew the lease had to be coming up soon. He was not spying on the other, or poking about in Rene’s business, he had someone else in his family do that for him. Seriously, given how many days of the week Rene spent at his place Alexandre was certain the apartment was subpar and certainly not up to Rene’s standards and nowhere near his own. It was a place unfitting for his partner. He didn’t feel bad that Rene spent more time with him, he was almost smug about it at times, it was time well spent as it allowed them to talk more.
It also allowed him to take care of things with Rene, the normal domestic things, which people might not expect of him unless they knew him well. The time spent together was well worth it, if you asked Alexandre, and he looked forward to the other coming home to him each night. Soon they’d have a home to themselves, he’d dropped by earlier in the day to check on things. There was a rather large team working on renovating the place his grandmother had gotten for him. More money spent but he would do what he could to return the money, even if he’d never repay it all, he would contribute to the family coffers so others could benefit like he just had. The place was coming along, with many rooms already finished and furniture residing in those rooms.
Soon they’d have a home all to themselves to come home to every night.
Thinking of that had the blond smiling as he sat on the living room floor, the fireplace crackling, as he looked over his emails. Some were work-related, of course, while others were things he’d ordered that were in transit. It was all the usual run-of-the-mill things for him really. A glance towards the front windows and a small sigh. He liked the rain, really he didn’t mind it, but he did hope Rene would be ok on the road, he always did worry. Drivers were not the best when it started to pour out, much like it was now, and he fretted whenever the weather was bad…right until Rene let him know he was home or till the other walked through the front door.

Pulling up he brought his coat over his head as he ran for the door with his keys out and at the ready. He didn’t need to bring anything in besides his satchel since there were plenty clothes of his in the guest room and scattered around the other’s home like easter eggs. Letting himself in he was a bit surprised, causing a bit of panic, to not see a bundled-up Alexandre on the couch at first glance. But once he pulled his coat back down and hung it up he saw them sitting on the floor near the fire.
“Working mon ange?” Shaking off some of the rain he hung his bag up too and moved to sit next to them on the floor. The fire felt nice after the cold rain and he leaned his head on theirs after pressing a kiss to their cheek. He tried as he always did to not seem stressed when he got here but today had been rough and he didn’t feel as much for talking. It was nice enough to just sit here with them while they worked.

“No.” Looking up he tilted his head. “Take your shoes off and dry off over here.” Patting the floor next to himself. “I’m just checking my emails. I have some things arriving soon, I was checking on them.” Plus work emails but he was only really browsing them, he wasn’t giving them much time, or thought, as he was off hours right now. He was keeping work out of his off time, at least when it came to the normal job. The Negaverse job came after the normal one…except nights like this, he was not going out in the rain and risking being sick. He’d been getting better about some things, including skipping runs in bad weather.
Raising a hand he let his fingers work their way through the others hair. “You’re stressed about something. Is it the apartment again?” Sighing softly, his head turning so he could press his lips to whatever skin was accessible to him, and smiled gently.
“I’ll handle it, don’t fret. Trust me, I’ve got this, I’m not going to let anything happen.” He didn’t say what he was planning, not yet, but he had been working on this plan for long enough that he knew Rene would be safe, he wasn’t about to let him go homeless.

“Clothing? Or things for here?” He was a bit interested in seeing what they ordered since he ordered just as many things that were delivered to his shop or apartment. He had become quite the friend of same-day delivery from Amazon and DoorDash here in the city. Pausing in his thoughts for a moment as they played with his hair he sighed a bit in return. “I’ll figure it out mon ange, you don’t need to help as you’ve already done enough for it by getting my papers back then.”
He knew they probably would solve the issue with no sweat but he felt like he needed to do it himself. They already did so much when it came to things in the Negaverse so he didn’t like that nagging feeling that he was a bit useless when it came to things still. There was still that smallest nervousness about them vanishing so he wanted to have a place of his own if things did fall apart. It was just difficult to figure out without the baseline knowledge of how it all worked here and who was a trustworthy landlord.
“But enough about that, we are both off work so it's time to relax.” Wrapping an arm around them he pressed a kiss back to their cheek. “The rain has been coming down so much that the road was clear. I’m surprised, maybe they have enough sense not to drive in a monsoon but I don’t think a monsoon would stop me from coming over~” Teasing slightly he leaned into them. “I was surprised not to find you curled up in a blanket like you usually are.”

“A mix of things. I have some sweaters coming as well as bed clothing.” Some warmer bed clothing. There were also some sets of lounge wear so he could work in comfort from home, plus be a little more casual and relaxed when the cold weather came, it would be nice. “I got some other things as well though.” He didn’t mind if Rene looked over things, even the household things that would be for the new home. He had throw pillows, bedding, and more. He had bedding, plenty of it, but he liked to have more than two sets in order switch things up. The weather and needing to wash things led to him switching the bedding fairly often.
Drawing Rene in for a lingering kiss he spoke softly, lips oh so close to the others. “I know, and I’m going to help with this too. Let me figure this out.” Because he wasn’t about to take no for an answer. He had the plans already made, and things in the works, and whatever Rene might do could impact his own plans.
“I’m already working on the issue my love.” Whispered words followed by another gentle press of lips. “I want to do this.” But what he didn’t say, this was a surprise. “I want some things…and I’m working on those things. Allow me this love.” He wanted, and needed, the other to trust him and let him handle this. He had a feeling he knew how Rene felt but he wanted to make things as solid and permanent between them as he could…and he wanted to give them the security in their relationship which Rene, and himself, deserved. It was a home for them both to live in together…to be a family, even if it was just a family of two…plus Katya.
Laughing, a soft sound which came from the blond, he leaned into the other as much as he could. “Mmm, I wanted to check on my emails and I can’t do that while laying down. I’m trying not to be as lazy even though this weather makes me just want to curl up and sleep.” But the fireplace was very nice - very helpful. He had a blanket on the floor with himself, a nice heavy knit blanket. “I’m glad you risked the weather to come spend the evening. Did you want to make dinner? We can do something warming.” As much as he didn’t mind ordering from restaurants, rather than going to them, he wasn’t going to put some driver at risk tonight.

“Of course sweaters and things, not a surprise. You have an army of them though they do look good on you.” Maybe a bit cute but he knew that wasn’t something they liked to here. But he knew their cousin abby had a similar opinion of Alexandre so there was at least some sort of alliance with the other Evans family members. That and Colette was more than willing to show him pictures of his little blond when they were even littler.
So they had some sort of plan… and it was hard to say no to them when they asked like that. It was hard to say no to them most times but especially when they asked so nicely. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to have them look into landlords or leases to try and help him figure it out. He just hoped they weren’t thinking of kicking Hudson out to have him move in here because as much as he liked it here he didn’t think it would be right to have Hudson move. He didn’t want the baker to poison his tarts though that was probably more of something Alexandre would do to someone.
“Alright mon ange, but only because you asked so sweetly. We can figure it out, just don’t murder someone to get me one of those….” Mumbling through some words until he figured it out with a slight jump. “Rent controlled places?” It seemed like the thing people might kill over or falsify information for with how high the cost became at times.
“Dinner sounds good, something warm maybe and a bit of wine?”

“I’m aware but I like to get some new pieces to add to the other ones that I have.” Rather than throw things out to make room for the new…he just added to the old. It meant he had more sweaters than he’d need but he also had options - lots of options.
“I’m not going to murder anyone, at least not to solve your problem. I don’t think you’d like it if you got something at the cost of a life…or several.” Soft and casually spoken, because death and speaking about it came easy for him, as he pet the others hair gently. “I have a plan though, trust in me. I won’t let you fall….I’ve got this.” He had power, or rather his family had power, and he knew just how to use it to get what he needed. He had used it to get what he wanted already, it was just…in the works.
“Warm sounds perfect, it’s chilly tonight, I think some sort of beef with potatoes and other veggies would be good. A thick gravy as well.” Maybe some wine involved in the cooking process as well. “You know I let you pick the wines for a reason.” Rolling his eyes as he stood up, slowly, and stretched. “If you want you can look over the orders I have coming in.” Because he really didn’t mind, if Rene ever asked to poke about his phone or his emails…he’d let him. He didn’t worry really. “Come on, time to cook and you can pick a drink for yourself.”

Well at least there was that level of understanding even if his view on murder had…. loosened a bit after some time in the negaverse. It wasn’t something he liked but he could understand it needed to happen sometimes. Rent was not a good enough reason in his opinion though. “True even if I might say as much when trying to get some exclusive new fashion from a designer.”
Getting up alongside them he leaned his head on theirs. “I trust you petite ange.” Smiling just a bit as he followed them towards the kitchen, he went about his routine of pulling down a wine glass from one cabinet before migrating to the small wine fridge he’d taken responsibility for. The stock had changed quite a bit since the first time he’d been here and he’d heard the rave reviews from some of the other family members through the grapevine.
“I like getting surprised by what you order, it’s almost like a holiday every time. But also that sounds good for dinner, paired with a red wine.” Showing them the one he’d picked, he filled his glass and sat at the kitchen island. It was nice watching the other cook and he was so glad they’d never asked him to do more than chop things. He still didn’t really know how to do much when it came to cooking but at least by now he didn’t burn noodles. It had been something he worked on in his apartment in the few days he spent there so the other didn’t witness the crimes he committed against the poor noodles and eggs as he tried various “easy” recipes.

“I would very much like to see you trying to do that - get some piece of limited clothing before someone else.” That he’d yet to see but he imagined it would be a show, he just needed to think of which collections were releasing soon and what Rene might like. Perhaps he could get to see such a show sooner rather than later.
“You do treat it like it’s Christmas when I get new things…especially when I try things on.” He did have to try on everything he got, especially sweaters, coats and pants. Given his size a lot of things didn’t fit him right and were too long…sometimes sweaters that were a small, or a medium, would reach his knees when it wasn’t meant to. Pants would be long enough for him to trip on and coats that were supposed to be short were mid thigh on him. He always tried things on and either took them to get fitted or he’d return them. Rene seemed very interested in watching things, even giving suggestions on what to keep or return.
While Rene grabbed a drink the blond went about grabbing what he’d need for dinner. “I did learn a bit from you about food and wine, even if I don’t drink, I do know beef will work best.” Glancing over his shoulder at the other as he worked on grabbing things from the fridge.

“I have my ways mon ange, just as you have yours~” Teasing slightly he swirled his glass of wine before sipping from it. Perking up at the mention of them trying clothes on he smiled wide. “Of course, it’s like getting to unwrap present after present when you try things on. Better than any Christmas I had before meeting you. Especially since it happens more than once a year.”
Resting his elbow on the table he took a moment to watch them while leaning his chin in his hand. “You learn well which is always good. It makes me glad to see how you pair things and come up with new dinners to cook.” Thinking for a moment as he watched them pace and prepare things, he was so very glad that they were okay with staying home more and maybe cooking. Delivery was always an option but he loved watching them fiddle with things here in the kitchen and work their magic. It was outside of what he could do himself which made it that much more amazing to see them cook with ease.
Watching quietly, he couldn’t help but feel a bit more at ease with them cooking, with them already apparently having an idea on how to help him. Even if he felt conflicted about not being able to figure it out himself, he knew that they would make sure he didn’t get separated from them. It was something he worried about less and less as time had gone on but it still nagged at him sometimes when he stayed in his apartment. Just that little worry deep down that he might pop over and find them gone, that they wouldn’t respond to his calls or texts again. It wasn’t something that had as much pull on him but he still felt it from time to time on top of the worry about them getting hurt. He’d been forced to see things from magic that had shaken him, always relating to Alexandre getting hurt or just disappearing. He didn’t even notice that he’d chewed his lip until it bled as he found himself lost in thoughts, staring off towards them without really seeing for a moment.

“While you may have your ways…I do believe I can manage just a bit more than you can petite souris.” Smiling ever so sweetly as he moved about the kitchen with ease, even as he rolled his eyes. He was not surprised Rene thought of him trying on clothing as something like that…he really wasn’t. He almost expected it really. “Somehow I am not surprised by you comparing me trying on new clothing to unwrapping gifts.” Shaking his head a bit.
“I had no choice really, not if I wanted to survive. I wasn’t going to just keep ordering food all the time..it gets boring plus then I have to wait for food to arrive and hope it’s right and to taste. I’d honestly rather do it myself at times.” He also wasn’t going to ask Lily to cook for him, even if it would have been for them both, when they had first started living together…before she’d moved back to a family home with her siblings and now her family as well as her siblings families. He’d lived a while with her in the original single brown stone which was now two brown stones made into one. So much had changed over time. So many years had gone by…and thinking about it all he felt a bit..old.
Having gone back to his cooking, and chopping of ingredients, the blond hadn’t noticed Rene’s predicament but he was talking once more. “I should have a very nice surprise for you before you need to worry about things. I’m not going to let you fall…I don’t let that happen to family. It’s why I even gave up so many years in this war. I joined so someone could fight for my families freedom…so if everything failed, and order won, it was because I wasn’t good enough…not because I left the fighting to other…less capable hands.” It was why he’d not involved anyone in his family for so long…and had walked the path alone. But he now had family by his side, members of chaos as well, but he really wasn’t the sort to not be there for his family…which now included Rene.

“True, you know the area and the people here much more than I do. My petit ange knows so many people’s secrets and that means I get to hear the gossip I very much enjoy.” He also knew that all the problems he had were nothing for them to handle which did make him feel a bit useless sometimes. But he still very much enjoyed things with them and dragging them into new things with varying levels of interest on their part.
Maybe that was why he had started actually trying to learn how to cook, so he could surprise them at some point with breakfast as well as their espresso which was easy enough for him to prepare. That in itself he was glad for because it was something he could do on his own that eased them into the morning as they weren’t the same type of morning person as he was it seemed.
“Oh? So you’ve been planning something already have you?” Not that that was surprising, not with how they managed to surprise him with things often in one way or another. Sighing a bit he smiled and shook his head. “Of course, mon ange, always making sure it’s done properly by doing it yourself? You do well to give them hell, I doubt any singular order member would be able to do much.”
Though he knew anything could happen and had happened here and there over the years. He’d seen the scars and he’d heard Lorcan bitching on top of seeing them in his shop injured but it seemed to be happening less because he was around. It was something that did relieve him a bit, the fact they were finding some sort of middle ground between the normal life which he liked and focused on, and the war which they wanted to make sure was going as well as it could. It was something he admired, that stubbornness they had, even if sometimes he felt like it was hard to get them to change their habits. He was still not happy with how they’d been stubborn and left him but things had changed a lot since then and he hoped it would all work out because he really hated the cutthroat landlords he kept trying to talk with.

“And you enjoy all the gossip I tell you, as well as what you hear at events we attend.” Alexandre responded in a whisper-soft voice glancing over his shoulder, blue eyes locking onto his partner's darker eyes. “Mmm, and I do enjoy seeing your delight at every new little secret you discover.” Rene did delight in finding out about anyone and everyone he could, and the more salacious or scandalous the gossip the better for Rene.
“You should know I’d be prepared. I know your lease is up soon so I’ve been working on things, I want you to be safe and to remain here - at my side.” Because at his side was the only place Rene belonged, and he’d be damned if that changed. Alexandre was good at showing his love for people, his appreciation, by gifting things…by silently doing things for others. This was a case of that but taken to a much higher level than anything he’d done before. He had his doubts, his moments of questioning himself. He hadn’t been questioning the whole thing but rather how he was going about things, that he wasn’t involving Rene in anything, but it was nearly done and he couldn’t go back and change things now. Even telling him now wouldn’t change things…so he would stay the course and surprise him when he planned.
“So, trust in me Rene. Do not fret, let me be the wind beneath your wings and just continue to do your thing. I’ll keep you aloft till things are done and then you can rest in a nice nest - one befitting of you. Do not let your worries bring you down and drown you.” Because he had things under control. He was finding his balance between both parts of his life much easier to manage, it helped that he spent more time with his family, he putting more energy into his civilian life because it meant more to him…because he had connections and more people in his life now. He’d let his family back in and he was bringing Rene with him into his family.
Finishing what he was working on, everything cut up nicely, the blond set the knife to the side as he pondered things. His hands worked slowly, his mind rolling thoughts over and over, vegetables found their way into the crock pot he pulled out of a cabinet. The meat, a fairly large cut of beef, wound up in the pot as well along with water. Turning now he eyed his partner. “You don’t mind if I borrow that bottle to use?” Some wine for the gravy wouldn’t be bad. He was going with a pot roast with veggies all done in a single crock pot with the final outcome being a fall off the fork pot roast and tender veggies.
“As much as it may seem like things are over-balanced to one side, with me doing so much work to help you right now, I think things balance out with how much you help me in other ways. It’s just a matter of strengths being put to good use in order to help each other and the relationship. I just happen to be good at pulling strings.” And surprising people with gifts.
“Isn’t that what also makes a good marriage as well?” The words slipped by, already planned, as he let his eyes meet the others. It wasn’t a topic he’d brought up before, not on purpose, but it was his intent to bring it up and broach the topic. He wasn't planning on leaving Rene, and the other did not have permission to leave him either, so there was one natural route for things to go eventually. Maybe it was too fast to bring up the topic, maybe it wasn’t, but it wouldn’t be the first time he’d moved fast…he knew he’d been accused of such before, by other people, but he did hope that wasn’t the case here. To simply bring up the notion…the end game. He was nervous, and he knew it showed, as he stood there waiting to see what would happen next.

“I thought you might be prepared in a way but here? What about Hudson? I wouldn’t want you to put him out or is he alright with me staying in the guest room more permanently?” It wasn’t the best option but… it would give more time to figure things out so he wouldn’t have to try and fight against the students moving in as well. Though he wondered if they might get sick of things if he was there constantly with the activities he liked to do with them most nights.
Listening to them weave another poetry-like tale, he thought it a bit romantic, much as they were when they’d actually confessed to him. It did help, really it did, as he sat there listening and watching them cook before they moved in close. Sipping his glass, he offered the bottle to them for cooking. He did trust them but that didn’t mean he didn’t trust everything else still, there were too many things going on and he didn’t like not having options even if he did like it here in the brownstone.
Sputtering as he inhaled his drink on accident, Rene coughed and took a moment to think as the topic of marriage came up. It caught him off guard and he looked at them for a moment trying to tell if they were teasing him. It hadn’t even been a year yet since they’d confessed and now marriage? But he could tell they were nervous so he got up and walked over to them, pulling them in close. “From the ones in books I’ve read, I think that’s true but my experience has been… different.” Thinking through things he rested his chin on top of their head as usual as the gears turned in his own head.
“I wouldn’t have to worry about you running away again then I would hope? But maybe…” He hadn’t really had a good track record with the idea of marriage, he still had a scar from where the last would-be spouse had shot him after he’d left her at the altar. “It could work but mon ange, there are a lot of other things to figure out before then.” Leaning down to kiss them, he smiled. “One step at a time, I know you offered your name at our first meeting but I think a few more holidays with your family might be a good idea first. I guess I need to pack my place sooner rather than later. My shark of a landlord might be on the hunt once they figure out I’m not resigning the lease there.”
