Crystal Academy! Honestly, Brooklyn felt terribly…insecure with the crisp, light blue uniform that she wore. At least she once again had a dorm room to return to and didn’t have to live full time up on Stirling…but…
Of all the things she had seen herself becoming…
A Crystal girl just…wasn’t it. Still. With the fancy sounding last name she had now…maybe she could blend in easily...and not be seen as the fraudulent charity case that she actually was.
Charity or a magical cat hacking into the systems…it was all the same thing in the end, wasn’t it? Here she was, a new lease on life! A new chance to figure out who she was, who she wanted to be…no longer on the run from the Feds…it…
It was great.
Holding her bag to her chest, Brooklyn hurried down the hall, deep in her thoughts, and of course, being so, she didn’t realize that she was about to bump into someone until she did.
“Oh gosh. I’m so sorry.”
Her bag fell to the floor and Brooklyn sighed, bending to scoop it and all of the items that decided to fall out of it back up.
Luckily, she was on her way to lunch so at least…
She wouldn't be late for anything.
“I didn’t hurt you, did I?”

The start of her sophomore year was tame by comparison to her freshman year of high school. There was less to adjust to now–just her teachers and the subject matter, really. Classmates, sort of, but they were all the same faces from last year, just a different selection in each of her classes–hardly anything to adjust to. So Siobhan was breezing through these first few weeks, mostly just reacclimating to a full schedule and having more of an active social life.
Not that she was a recluse, but she could very easily get lost in a project if she wasn’t careful, and that happened more than once over the past summer. Her friends actually had to come drag her out of her room at one point…and she eventually did relent and go willingly. Time with her friends was always worth more of her time, anyway.
Which was why today would be a lunch spent with them instead of with her face buried in another project–a wooble on this time.
Siobhan had just closed her locker and turned to head for the cafeteria when a girl suddenly bumped into her. It sent the unopened wooble bag in her hand flying, but otherwise she was unharmed. Concern for the other girl flooded into her, though, and forgetting about her little craft project bag on the floor for the moment, she hurriedly stooped down to start gathering the other girl’s things that had fallen from her bag.
“Oh, I’m fine,” she said, quickly grabbing whatever was within her reach and soon offering them to the other girl with a soft smile. “Are you okay?” To her surprise, the face was unfamiliar, and it took a moment for her to process why that would be. Once the “why” registered, the teen’s smile warmed all the more.
“You’re new, aren’t you? I’m Siobhan! Nice to meet you.”

“Good, good…” Brooklyn froze when the other girl–Siobhan found her out. Just like that.
New...thankfully the girl didn’t say it with any disdain, or with any suspicion it…she could handle new...when it was said…almost with kindness? She hoped?
“I’m new, yeah! Brooklyn, it’s nice to meet you too, Siobhan…it’s a lot to get used to here, and the uniforms…I’m so afraid I’m going to get them dirty! Why would they make a bunch of teenage girls wear powder blue? It’s just…asking for trouble, don’t you think?”
…No. Of course she didn’t think that. These were fancy girls. Girls who had money, who had it together…
She should have just gone to Meadowview…at least then…well she would have still been alone but…she would have been among normal people…
“They’re pretty though.” She finished, somewhat lamely, and then her eyes landed on the wobble bag. “...What’s that?”

Siobhan couldn’t help the way her smile grew as Brooklyn introduced herself and went on to express her first impressions of the school. She didn’t imagine starting somewhere new was ever an easy thing, though it wasn’t something she related to on a personal level. She reached out a comforting hand, though, and gave Brooklyn a pat on the shoulder.
“It’s…definitely not one of their greatest decisions,” she said with a little nod in agreement, “but I think they were more concerned about us looking ‘prim and proper’ versus choosing something a little more practical. Like something dark, for very obvious reasons.”
The brunette gave a little shrug, though, in resignation to their reality, though her smile was as soft and steady as ever.
“They are,” she agreed again–because they were, there was no doubt about that. “And if I can say, it looks good on you.”
The question turned her attention down to the bag on the ground just nearby, and her eyes widened as she quickly moved to grab it. Once she had straightened herself out again, she offered it to her new friend.
“It’s a wooble kit!” She sounded absolutely thrilled to be talking about it. “It basically teaches you how to crochet. You make these cute little plushie type things–this one’s a bee! I kind of collect them. If you want, I can give you this one to try out. I have others I can still work on at home!”

A…wooble kit? Brooklyn had never heard of such a thing but…but then she was being offered the kit. And it was a bee? She was going to get to learn to crochet a bee? Her eyes began to sparkle slightly. Effie liked bees. Or his outfit liked honey, whatever, bees and Effie were always linked in her mind…so.
“Are you like, for sure, sure? Because…that’s super kind of you…and I’d love to learn to crochet! It sounds fun, and it always looks so fun…and…it’s going to be a bee?”
She couldn’t stop herself from reaching for the kit and looking it over, though gave a laugh, pleased the other girl agreed with her on the uniforms. Maybe…maybe she wasn’t here from money…maybe she was like Brooklyn, and was here on…well. Dubious charity…most likely not dubious…but. Charity at least.
“Are you in the dorms here?”

Her eyes absolutely lit up at the question, and she bobbled her head excitedly.
“Absolutely! Take it, take it!” She happily handed it over, and leaned forward a bit in her excitement to share her little hobby with someone new. All of her friends were already well aware of her fascination with these little kits, and while she always talked up the Woobles no one else around her seemed to share the same passion as she did about them.
And that was fine! To each their own, of course. But she loved being able to share her hobby with anyone who was willing to listen, and all the more if they were willing to give it a shot.
“Yes! It’s gonna be a cute little bee once you’re all done! I’ve made this one before but there was a sale so I bought a couple more just to have some to make. It’s super fun, seriously.”
She gave a little nod of her head at the last question, though paused to consider it again for a moment before making a little “sort of” gesture with her hand. “During the week, I do. It’s just easier than taking the time to head home–it’s not like they go easy on us with the homework and stuff. Since I don't need to rush home, I can get my homework done sooner and have more time to spend with friends or do whatever else. I go home most weekends, though. You?”

“I go on the weekends too, or at least, that’s the plan. I might be staying for the first few weeks just to get used to everything here, but it is absolutely the plan to…weekend!”
Brooklyn stood up again, her items returned to her bag, and the Wooble box cradled gently in her arms. “If you wanna come over tonight maybe? You can help me figure out how to start this? Maybe if you have one you’re working on we can…Wooble together?”
Her voice was hopeful, and she honestly…really wanted to have someone to hang out with!
“You’re really not wrong about the homework though. I never thought Junior year would be this hard this quickly! Drill sergeants!”

”That’s a great plan!”
Siobhan found the excitement contagious, and at the invite to hang out later she again gave a nod, though her smile had now become rather beaming at the prospect of woobling with someone. It sounded a little weird, sure, and while some might think that was possibly an inappropriate thing, she really didn’t care. The point was she would actually get to hang out and crochet with a new friend!
“Oh, that sounds like so much fun! Let’s do it!” She stood up as well, expression sobering up a bit at the memory of how much homework she did actually have for tonight. “Mm…well. Can I bring my homework? We might have to do a hybrid wooble-and-study type of thing.”
It was a bit of a buzz kill, but hopefully she wouldn’t mind and they could still hang out.

“You know…honestly? That’s not a bad idea. A little nerdy of us both but, hey. Gotta stay on top of things before they get on top of us.” Plus…she wouldn’t mind the company. She enjoyed people her own age and this…this was just…a real person. Who could talk to her about real things. Woobling and whatever else! No wars. No Space. No nothing.
Just…a new friend.
“How about…you come over after dinner? Or I can meet you at dinner and we can walk there together?”
The campus wasn’t large…and the food was really good, at least by her standards. “Wooble and study party!”

”That’s the idea,” the brunette replied, looking plenty amused at her phrase of choice. She didn’t comment, of course, and instead turned her focus on their planning efforts for the upcoming evening. Having a friend to do woobles with was definitely something to look forward to, and it showed as much on her face.
“Let’s do dinner!” she finally said after considering the two options presented to her. It made the most sense, or at least she thought so. Not that she was directionally challenged, but at least this way she wouldn’t have to use up too much energy trying to find Brooklyn’s dorm.
“But for now, did you already have lunch plans? You can come with me if you want, I was just gonna meet up with my friends.” They…probably wouldn’t mind, right?

“Yeah? No I’d love to!” Dinner, lunch! All of it! The grin on her face was big…too big if she were being honest, and Brooklyn tried to school it to something…tamer. Something that didn’t scream that she wanted friends. Wanted to hang out with people. Wanted…connections.
Real world connections.
“If you're sure they won’t mind, I would love to.”
This…was good! A big step for Brooklyn Vendove...who totally, absolutely belonged at Crystal Academy.
Slipping her new Wooble box into her bag she gave a small nod. “Lead the way!”
Fitting in was going to be so good!
