Naeria was paying attention to the dots on her ComTech that showed her when people with magical auras were around. Often, it was something she didn’t think so much about, but now that she was making friends, she wanted to see if she could find some of them again. She still had questions for some of them!

From watching the dots, and moving towards them, she managed to find one of the humans. She had not known from the dots, but it turned out to be the knight with the nice name, Targovishte.

“Hello,” she said, waving. She was getting good at waving. “I was hoping to see you. I was wondering, can we look at Jupiter?”

Targovishte brightened when she saw Naeria and gave a little wave. “Hey! How have you been?”

She made a move to hug the other woman but stopped herself, that…might not be kosher in her culture, so instead she did a little half hopping jig instead.

“Oh! Yeah sure! I’d be happy to bring you up to Targovishte!” Holding out her hand, she gave a little grin. “I should be able to get up there again now, but um…please don’t expect too much, it’s…it’s honestly a super big mess, and I don’t want you to expect too much!”

Or to judge her. That was honestly the biggest fear for some reason. “I didn’t cause the mess, but…I’m going to be working hard to fix it, so…there’s that!”

Her smile was almost shy and awkward. “Anyway! Let's go if you’re ready!”

When the knight got too close to her, into her personal space, Naeria took half a step back out of the way but did not say anything else about it. She knew there were some other Earth greetings, but she preferred waving over any that involved much touch with near-strangers.

Targoviste sounded almost embarrassed about the state of Jupiter, and if anything that made Naeria more curious about what she would find there.

“I know it is not your fault if some things are broken or not growing,” said Naeria. “Things have not been going well on most planets over the past thousand years or so.”

She reached out her hand, slowly, since she knew contact would likely be needed for this. “But let’s look at what is there.”

Targovishte gave a little smile and took hold of Naeria’s hand, and then closed her eyes, thinking of the oath that would take her, take them up to Targovishte, and when she opened her eyes, there they were. Back at the entrance of the storm cellar…or, at least that was what she was calling it.

“Well! Welcome to Targovishte!”

She let go of Naeria’s hand and gestured, giving a little jazz hand wiggle and then a shrug, though paused when a large…butterfly? It looked like a butterfly, but the pattern was almost like the feathers of a snowy owl and she stared at the creature, open mouthed.

“...That’s new! A new face to welcome you, Naeria.” Insects…that…

It was strange...but. It made her so happy too.

It was slightly damp, and there were ruins around them, but she did not mind that. After all, places like this had many shady spots for finding mushrooms, and also different plants, or other fungi and lichens. The rest of the structures made her wonder about the history of this place.

“I like Jupiter,” she announced.

The butterfly had her smiling, watching its flittering movements with her wide, golden eyes. “And look! There is some life here!”

Immediately she was pulling out her ComTech, scanning the biological makeup of the butterfly and then taking a picture.

“Let us see. What can we find out about your species?”

Targovishte chuckled. “I’m…not sure that there would be any information…it doesn’t look like anything I’ve ever seen on Earth…the cricket bug I found here last time…I don’t think that was a normal cricket either.”

Which…was kind of exciting in its own way. Having…new kinds of bugs…different kinds of bugs…it.

“I like the idea that there’s life though. It…really makes me happy. I’m very glad I got to show you this!”

…It hadn’t been planned but…still. She was glad, regardless.

“I’m glad that you like Jupiter. It’s…damp…and I think it might rain again soon. Do you want to see the…underground? I…don’t know for sure, but I think…it was where people lived.”

“Carbon based life form,” Naeria said, looking at her screen. “Scan indicates a similar, but not identical, chemical makeup to Earth invertebrates. More testing would be needed for a more detailed result,” Naeria glanced at it, fluttering freely now a bit farther away, “But I won’t try to capture it.”

What Targovishte said next had her eyes sparkling.

“Underground?” There was more of a chance to find mushrooms down there. Or maybe slime molds, or algae, or some kind of plant that did not follow the rules of Earth biology and that could thrive away from light. “I would love to look there. I do not mind the damp.” She was smiling. “Some of my favorite species thrive in conditions like these.”

“Oh yeah?” Targovishte motioned for Naeria to follow and then opened the doors to the cellar. “Come on, I haven’t explored much, but…from what I think is that this where people ended up living? I saw…a memory? A vision. Something and whoever or whatever it was, they were talking about how they were tired of the weather destroying everything over and over. My friend’s Wonder is over across that canyon…river? Ravine? Whatever. But I guess he and I were friends in the past, so that…was kind of cool.”

She led the girl down the steps and spread here arms wide.

“Go ahead and explore what you want to, ah, here!”

Withdrawing a flashlight from subspace, she grinned. “I’m not sure if there will be anything growing but, you’re welcome to study what you’d like!”

“Living underground in harsh environments is a good idea to keep safe,” said Naeria, following closely behind the knight as she led her down the stairs. Was that an idea that she could take back for Velenia? Unfortunately, it might not be, because the larger problem there was not just weather conditions as far as she knew but many factors that made living there impossible.

“Have you seen any life down here?” she asked, looking at the beam of the flashlight. She tried to not look overly excited as she said, “For example, mushrooms?”

“No, not yet…but I’ll keep my eyes open and I can write to you if and when I do find some mushrooms…you like mushrooms, I take it?” Targovishte couldn’t hid the grin that spread across her face, not when the girl seemed so excited.

“You know, you can come back whenever. I’ll write to you, if you want. We have like. Magic letter writing rings and I can meet you somewhere and…we can plan for things? Plan a bit better, I know I wasn’t really ready for today, but if you’re interested in really studying? I don’t mind. I’ll get a kit together or something and we can take an expedition, or whatever. I…might need to do maintenance though…”

The Squire grimaced when they came to what was obviously a cave in, rocks blocking the way. Large ones.

“...I have a friend who said he’d come help me try to clean up, so I might have to do that first but…if you’re good with being pen pals…I’m happy to have a science friend down here with me?”

Naeria did not see any mushrooms either. She could accept that, though. Sometimes you did not find certain species immediately, and this underground living area might not have been the proper environment for them, after all. She typed a few notes on her ComTech as she walked.

"I would like that," she said, "To hear updates about what you can find up here."

It was good to hear that she was so invested in fixing this place, as well, and to restoring the life to it as much as she could. Earth was beautiful, but it would be better if there were more thriving places in the universe.

"And I can help, too. When you have set aside more time." Looking at the pile of rocks, she could see that clearing it would take time and probably tools. "But I could help with something like that. Or, cleaning. I have been practicing cleaning."

“That sounds awesome! I’m sorry I can’t show you more than this…I wish I could. I think that like…this goes up into the cliffs? Like, into caves? I’m not sure, but the memory vision thing…made me assume?”

Targovishte wasn’t really sure, but she wanted to know. Badly. Reaching her hand out to the pink Naeria, she gave a small smile. “Ready go go? I promise…I hope your next trip here will be more…you’ll be able to see and study more.”

She couldn’t guarantee, but…she could try! She could sure try.
