It took less than ten minutes to get back to Sadie’s apartment, and swiftly, she had let herself and Zenner inside and ushered the other woman to the couch. “Can I get you anything to drink? Water, soda, tea maybe?”
Making her way to the kitchen, Sadie poured herself a glass of water and smiled over at Zenner. “Be thinking of your questions too. I’ve got lots of answers, or at least I’m going to try to have lots of answers for you. There’s a lot to think about and having questions is going to be your best bet at learning all you want to.”
Maybe not all that she needed to but…hey. Sadie was doing her best, and she wasn’t exactly very…active in things anyway so…
She did what she could. That was all that could be asked of anyone in this war.

Zenner moved to sit on the couch and propped her bad leg up beside her, careful to keep her boot off the couch. “Honestly some water would be awesome” She said in response as Sadie moved into the kitchen. Zenner thought about what she would want to ask, but her mind was a big blank. She thought back on the fight and by the time Sadie came back, she had a few questions worked up and ready. “Okay. I guess my biggest question is just one big “What the ******** was that?”, but to start with,, What’s so special about this little wooden cat? Why was it there? And Why did it give me magical powers?”

Sadie had to work to suppress a grin. Zenner…really wasn’t wrong with her questions, and her indignation was…almost funny, but she understood. It was such a hard thing to wrap a mind around, and just.
One minute they were dancing at a club, and now Zenner was initiated into a whole new kind of club. One that asked a lot from a person.
Grabbing a glass of water for the other woman, she made her way over, placing both drinks onto the coffee table and took a seat on the couch.
“All right, so the wooden cat is your…weapon. It sucks. I know it sucks, but it will get better, the stronger you get. It gave you powers because…that’s just your destiny. Same as me, it just…” Reaching up towards the ceiling, Sadie waved her hands in the air. “Celestial…stuff? I don’t know. All I know is that there are bad things in this city. Dangerous people and things. That creature we fought, it’s called a youma and thy’re like. Mindless monsters who try to kill people either by literally eating their souls or taking their energy…it’s a lot. But…we’ve got the power to fight back. To help those in this city who can’t help themselves.”
She reached out, taking a sip of her drink as she thought over her next words. “There…are a lot of us. You and me? We’re both Knights…or rather, you’re a Page, and I’m a Squire, but we’re…bound to protect the planet we…serve? Kind of serve? That sounds…like way too much. But we’ve got the same planet, which is Jupiter, so that’s…super cool, at least in my opinion!”

Zenner drank the water given to her as Sadie tried to answer her questions, and took in the information given the best that she could. This was a lot, but somehow it all clicked in her head. Fighting monsters. There are worse things to be doing out there, and she was always down for a good fight. “Okay. Weirdly, that makes some sense. So Page, Squire, Knight, like medieval times stuff? If it’s that serious, how come everybody doesn’t know about it? If there are creatures out there who can literally eat souls, don’t you think the public would be safer knowing about it? And that’s another thing, how on earth do you keep this stuff secret? If there are just random monsters attacking people on the street, why doesn’t everyone already know?”

“Well.” Sadie gave a wry smile and shrugged. “Honestly. There are two sides to this war, and it’s not just the…monsters who look like monsters that we fight, there are a whole few groups of people who are involved too. Mostly…the fights are blamed on…gang violence or something dumb like that, but it’s just…a literal war. Mostly fought at night. There are always wild things in the city itself and honestly. It feels like we fight against it as much as any people but…”
She took another sip of her drink and put the glass back down.
“As for people just…not knowing. People are dumb, Zenner. You’ve seen like. Horror movies and super hero stuff…people just…try to stay in their own lanes. If it doesn’t bother them on a personal level? It’s just…something over there, you know?

Zenner thought on Sadie’s words for a second and nodded. “Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Hell, walking home from a late shift, my only concern is bed and maybe dinner if i’m lucky. I can’t say I’d even notice if a youma or whatever tried to jump me after a bad day at work” She chuckled and drank some more water. “Okay so moving on. What was that whole magic transformation stuff? How is a little wooden cat a weapon? And how do i get stronger so I can get a better weapon?”

“It…it’s just what your weapon will start as. I’m not…sure what it will end up becoming but…like me, I started out with just a normal windsock, but now it’s…well. Still a windsock, but a staff too. My friend, his name is Belmont, you’ll meet him at some point, I’m sure. He started out with a sword hilt? Just the hilt. But now he has this great like…ball and chain thing? I’m not sure how else to describe it but it’s absolutely better than what he had.”
She hesitated and then her eyes lit up. “And as you get stronger, you get magic. Like. Power. Real power. That’s…kind of cool too…and as for how to get stronger? Train with me. Hang out with me. Go on patrols…visit your Wonder…ah. Wonders. So. You said your name was…Kronoberg? I have no idea what that could be…but it’s a real place. And it’s up on Jupiter. Just like Belmont and Targovishte are up on Jupiter…it’s. I’ll take you to mine maybe tomorrow if you want to go? And I can help you get to yours too! It…it’s like. A safe spot for you. Just yours…but it’s the place you protect…”
The smile on her face had grown soft. “I love it up there, even if it is still a mess. Yours will be a mess too but…we can get it fixed up. Belmont and I are getting pretty good about that.”

Zenner blinked at Sadie as she tried to wrap her head around what she was saying. “Well if hanging out with you is what’ll help me get stronger, I guess I have no choice” she teased “but I don’t think that’ll be any great burden for me. I guess if I have to deal with this now, I’m glad I’m not dealing with it alone at least.” As she spoke, the last part of what Sadie said finally hit her. “Wait, so you mean we can go to Jupiter? Isn’t it just a big ball of gas a gazillion light years away?”

“Ehhh!” Sadie made a face, trying to figure out the best way to explain but finally just nodded as she shrugged. “It’s…complicated? It’s magic? It’s like…swearing a vow to the place, which sounds a lot more dire than it is, and we get to go up there…if you want, we can make some plans to meet up tomorrow or something and I can show you around Targovishte and help you get to like…understand a bit better? It’s a lot. I know it’s a lot…but you’ll get there. I did.”
And heavens knew she wasn’t the smartest girl on the block. She could act it, sure but…smarts had never really...well. That wasn’t true. Numbers she was great with numbers...but history? Mythology? Absolutely not.
“Besides. The best part of this…is you won’t be doing a damn thing alone.”

Zenner nodded “Magic, right. That makes about as much sense as anything else I suppose. So I can go to…Kronoberg?” She asked, the name taking a moment to pop back into her head. “What even is Kronoberg anyway? And on that note, what’s Targovishte? I know it’s a place but what type of place is it? And you said it’s a mess? How so? What happened to it?”

Caught. Sadie grimaced and shrugged. “Okay, so I haven’t spent much time on my Wonder. It’s a bunch of ruins, the part that I’ve seen, the…part that’s there., But I’ve gone to Belmont loads of times, and it’s a mess…cause there was like a thousand years where it was just…left alone, and his castle has so many traps and things that we’ve been trying to fix up…but. I want to go to mine. Seriously I do…and…I’ll take you!”
…And they could brave whatever bad things were going to be there and they would simply deal with it.
“I’m not sure what Kronoberg will be…but hey. That’s so much of the fun is learning things about yourself that you never had even thought of before…it’s like…surprise! Guess what!”
She looked over at Zenner and tossed a pillow at her.
“Magic! That’s what!”

Zenner laughed as she was hit with a rogue pillow, picking it up and tossing it back at Sadie. “Careful there. I AM a world champion pillow fighter.” She said, tossing another pillow at the other woman. “As for magic, I guess that makes sense. I guess I should just start assuming that through magic, all things are possible” She laughed and shifted, adjusting her leg. “Another thing i’m concerned about is just my leg. It’s actually worse than it looks. I was in an accident and my whole knee was crushed. It took a long time to heal, and I still need to walk with a cane on the bad days. How’s that going to work with me out there fighting monsters on Jupiter or whatever?”

“That’s the best way to look at things. And it’s a great like. Mantra too.”
She paused and looked down at Zenner’s leg, frowning slightly. “Oh shoot, really? Well…”
Wrinkling her nose, Sadie thought it over for a moment and finally shrugged. “I would…get a plain cane? Maybe one that can fold up…you get like…magical storage? And you can keep it for when you’re powered up if you need it. That’s what I would do, at least.” There might be a Mauvian or someone who could make her something…but.
That would require actually knowing a Mauvian…and.
“That would be your best bet for right now…is there anything that can be done? That sounds awful…I would…make sure you’re out with people, at least to start out. That way if something happens you’re not alone?”

“Oh yeah” she said “I’m not doing any of this alone for the foreseeable future. Magical storage is a good place to stash a spare cane I suppose. I’ll have to remember next time I do that. I do have a brace I can wear for stability, I just usually don’t need it. But I guess fighting monsters is a good time for some extra stability” Zenner shrugged as she gently massaged her knee. “The pain is usually just whatever. It hurts, but it hurts no matter what I do so it’s not really worth thinking about. I have some pain meds but I try not to use them unless I have to cause if i just took them whenever, I’d be hopelessly addicted by now. There’s not much short of a knee replacement or amputation that would really change anything for me, and I don’t qualify for either of those. A knee replacement would depend on how much bone is left intact, which is a toss up at best, and amputation isn’t an option until the leg is non-functional. So I just have to live with it for now.” “Tell me about you?” She asked, trying to change the subject. “How did you get mixed up in all of this?”

“Keep the brace in subspace too, anything you wear as a civilian will vanish when you power up. So anything extra you need, just make sure you bring it with you.”
It did sound like a good idea, extra stability but. “Yikes. Those are awful choices…you’d think. Like. It’s twenty, twenty four…why don’t we have flying cars and magical sprays that just make people better. Injuries, illnesses…it’s stupid. And we deserve it.”
Sadie flopped her head back against the top of the couch and shrugged. “Fluke. Same as you. I was on a walk, saw someone fighting a youma, picked up the handy dandy windsock to try and help out…and poof. Sadie out, Targovishte in. I’m…I’m not mad about it but boy did it ever change my life.”
Growing quiet for a second, she gave a smile. “For the better. Look at the great people it’s allowed me to meet.
