The Reservoir (4) : The Destiny City Reservoir opened about two years ago and is an easy escape from the big city. It’s a five minute drive outside of the Eastern side of town and features clear water and sandy beaches--although, the sand here is notorious for squeaking when you step on it. It’s a hot spot for all fun summer activities, but it’s been in the news for mysterious reports of some strange, aquatic monster. Some accounts say they’ve spotted a twenty foot long, snake like creature capable of rearing a long neck high above the water. It’s hard to tell if the videos are doctored, but there are too many rumors to dismiss easily. Something strange might be lurking deep in the water. Or it’s just a hoax to get people out to the Reservoir!
But…Sometimes, people feel like something is grabbing their ankle, even if they are just wading in the shallow end. In the deeper parts of the water, it gets a little more intense: something has been said to grab onto ankles and pull. People have been warned about dangerous pranks, but so far no one has been caught. In the shallow end, anyone unfortunate enough to be targeted may feel themselves being knocked off their feet and tugged into the water; anyone in deep water may feel a firm grip on their ankle, tugging them lower and lower. Somehow, anyone it targets is freed--either by wriggling and fighting, or because someone intervenes and pulls the would-be victim up. No one has drowned in the lake. Yet. It's impossible to see who, or what, is doing this, but it usually gives up after one failed attempt. Usually.
While you may find yourself harassed by the supposed cryptid, or see something visibly odd in the distance, you cannot take any pictures of the creature. Who knows if you’re even being attacked by the cryptid–or just another youma? Mel had about a second to react to the sight of water below her, and when she saw it she immediately stopped screaming, closed her eyes, pinched her nose, and held her breath just in time to plunge into the depths of some body of water. She had no idea which one, and at least for now while she was in it, it probably didn’t matter. What did matter was that she knew how to swim–she was actually a fairly strong swimmer–and, not for the first time in her life, she was quietly grateful for her parents’ insistence that she learn this life-saving skill in her early childhood.
When her momentum slowed enough, Mel opened her eyes so she could start swimming back up to the surface. Shocked or not, she had to make it to the surface to even earn the right to keep on complaining about her recent experience with all these rifts, so she kept her focus and started swimming up toward the surface.
That had gone smoothly, until of course it didn’t.
What was with her luck tonight?!
She nearly opened her mouth to cry out when something seemed to grab her ankle. Looking down, though, she saw absolutely nothing. She would have stayed longer to try and investigate, but she was nearly out of breath, so she was forced to abandon it in favor of…you know…surviving.

Rainier hit the water with about as much elegance and finesse as someone who was new to jumping off a 20-foot high dive and was certain that the water was going to suddenly turn to concrete. While she kept a tight form, arms were crossed over her chest and ankles crossed as she pinched her nose, she looked an awful lot like someone who was going down a speed slide against their better judgment. The water was freezing, perhaps not as bad as the river on Beira’s world would have been, but with the heat they’ve suffered these last few days, it went without saying that this was a bit of a shock to the system. What was more startling was when she opened her eyes and Mel was there beside her, well mostly above at this point, but still submerged. A silver lining when considering the danger and high risk of injury that would have happened if Rainier had landed on her from above. With what strength she had while powered, she cupped Mel’s heel with the palm of her hand as something to kick off of and pushed her upwards.

Again, she barely dodged in time.
Mel moved as quickly as she could to get out of the way when she saw something fall into the water after her. It was only once her friend was in the water did she realize that it was Rainier, and she watched her friend go down, past her. She watched just long enough to make sure that she was conscious, and when she saw movement she turned back to focus on getting to the surface.
She was almost out of breath, and after the first couple of kicks she started to have doubts that she could make it.
That is until she felt something go for her ankle again. She nearly panic-kicked it away, but glancing down this time she saw that it was Rainier, and she'd given her a sort of platform to kick off of.
Bless.
Mel barely made it, taking deep, heaving breaths as soon as she broke the surface.
"Rainier!" she called out, almost frantic as she looked around to make sure she'd made it to the surface as well.

A moment later she emerged beside Mel, “I’m here.” she replied, whipping the water from her eyes so she could see where they were at.
Wading in the water she spun around and spotted a recognizable food shack on the horizon and knew that was the way they needed to head. “Looks like we’re at the reservoir,” Rainier commented. Thankfully it was vacant otherwise she would have heard whistles blowing as lifeguards rushed out to them to save them from drowning.
Although she was a somewhat decent swimmer, doing so in full clothes was more than a little difficult. She’d tried to roll over and look up at the stars, float if possible, but the boots and coat were doing her no favors so Rainier allowed the weight to pull her under before powering down into a pair of capris, a simple summer shirt, and a pair of slip-on shoes that were more like water shoes than the heavy boots she’d been wearing.
Again she surfaced, this time able to stay afloat more easily. “Are you ok?” She asked, her tone threaded with worry as she tried to keep a steady breath.

There was instant relief when Rainier responded, and she turned to see because she had to be doubly sure that she wasn't going out of her mind. She'd felt something pull at her underwater when there was nothing there, after all, so for the moment she wasn't taking any chances with anything.
"Oh, thank god," tumbled out of her once she confirmed it, and when Rainier confirmed where they were she relaxed just that bit more. That explained the something in the water she may or may not have encountered, at least. She was still glancing around, confirming that there was no one else around, when Rainier disappeared under the water and Erica emerged in her place.
"Been better," she answered her question that followed, "but alive, and some nights that's all we can really ask for."
With that she nodded toward the shore. "Let's talk more once we're on dry land? We also gotta go rescue the rest of your groceries, and your car..."

Erica glanced over at her friend, her lips pulled into a smirk and one brow raised in an expression that joking asked I wonder whose fault it is that they need to be rescued… Not Mel’s, which she knew, but someone was clearly playing a cruel prank on both of them.
Her head shook dismissive as a small chuckle filled the otherwise quiet air. “Perhaps easier said than done. The groceries, I mean, not the part about getting to dry land.” However, the thought of having squeaky sand sticking to her was rather unpleasant and caused her expression to turn into a bit of a grimace. “I’ll honestly be surprised if they’re still on my trunk.” Thankfully food was easily replaceable.
Her car… not so much.
That was what had her more concerned, that someone had gotten into her unlocked vehicle and trashed it or tried to hotwire it and steal it out of the parking lot. As a cop, she’d find it tomorrow but the damage… she didn’t even want to consider this as a possible outcome.
For now, she kept her head above water, doing a breaststroke until the water was deep enough for her to walk the rest of the way.

"If they're not, I can offer to at least bring you a small breakfast and a decent lunch for the next week."
Mel looked horrified at the thought of those groceries going missing, and when she realized that her car was also at risk she bit her lip, opened her mouth to say something about it, then promptly closed it again. "And if there's anything else I can do..." she decided to add instead, so it was broad enough to possibly include any additional inconveniences with regard to her car without being so specific as to offer to replace it the way she was offering to replace the food.
There was no way she could replace a car, after all. And she doubted Erica would ask her to even if it did come to that.
She followed her to the shore and, once she was standing on two feet again Mel started wringing out her hair and her clothes as best she could. There was nothing to be done about the squeaky sand that started sticking to their feet once they were finally out of the water, so she just tried to put it out of her mind.
"I'll get us an Uber. I wonder if we could request that they bring some towels. Would that be too weird?"

“Maybe just a little,” Erica admitted with a small shrug. “It is summer though so there might be some drivers that keep blankets or something similar in their trunk just in case they are unfortunate enough to pick someone up from here.”
“Honestly though? Don’t worry, I know this wasn’t your fault.” Circumstances and happenstance, are anomalies out of both their controls. “If you’re new to this whole knight thing then I’m sure you’ll learn quickly that these random occurrences are more common than you realize.” It honestly didn’t take long after first powering up as Rainier to discover how many of the strange stories she’d hear in whispers around the precinct or see on the news was either related to the Negaverse or some seasonal shenanigans that felt more supernatural than anything.
“There are a few people I could try cal-” She paused, blinked a few times in stunned silence as the realization crashed down on her that her cellphone was in her back pocket… and she’d powered down in the water which- Aw ********> she mentally swore. “Never mind…”
That was so dumb of me to do. Erica scolded herself. I could use my ring, maybe. But I wouldn’t be able to get a reply from anyone since they’re all civilians or senshi so we’d just be out here waiting for someone who my or may not show up. Quite the conundrum and one she didn’t have an answer to yet.

Mel still looked apologetic despite the free pass, and decided to at least bring a small dessert everyday for her as a small token of her apology.
"It's been about a year," she said, trying to think back to her awakening. She remembered being insanely hot while in her outfit, so it was most definitely in summer. Late July at the earliest, or maybe early to mid August. "And yeah, it's been...something else." The expression on her face was a complete confirmation of Erica's words. "Not always life threatening, but always out of the ordinary."
Which wasn't a bad thing in and of itself. Her life prior to awakening had become something of a routine, and she always had to go out of her way to try and make things interesting for herself. Now, she didn't even have to try. Interesting things just found her.
And sometimes it involved getting tossed into and out of multiple rifts in a single night.
She was still wringing out her clothes when Erica started to make a suggestion...and then ultimately dropped it. Blinking in slight confusion, she quickly let it go, got her phone out of her subspace, and got started on getting the Uber. If they didn't want to catch summer colds, they had to be quick about getting dry.
"I added the request for towels. Let's see if we get a nice driver."

“Thank you,” Erica offered an almost embarrassed smile. Taking the lead from Mel, Erica gathered her hair and began twisting it tightly to get excess water out of it before moving on to her shirt. “I’ve found that since becoming a Knight, many of those unsolved cases make sense now.” Most notably the missing persons and the incidents of people presumably ODing on the street only to find their belongings missing or worse, dead. “I’m sure you’ve noticed some patterns as well,” Erica glanced over at Mel for confirmation. Knowing that the Negaverse Agents could take starseeds and drain energy lent itself to how she approached certain calls. Fortunately, so far nobody has questioned why her body camera was turned off having ‘been hit’ by something or having it knocked off her as an escape to find a place to power up. Only happened twice though so not enough to be considered a pattern in her report. “So, what were you doing before you fell through that tear into me, if I may ask?” Erica pulled her phone out of her back pocket and inspected it for cracks then tried turning it on, hoping that the Otter Case that had a feature to protect the charging port had hopefully kept it dry enough to still turn on after taking a swim.

She went back to wringing water from her clothes, and when talk shifted over to how their Knight lives intersected with their work she sighed quietly while nodding. "Hard not to," she said, "I'm in a lab so I deal more with second-hand accounts through the reports and stuff that come in with what needs processing. It's probably different from someone whose boots are actually on the ground, but it's still tough in its own way."
Granted, having evidence to process for any case meant that something had already gone wrong for the victim. Or victims. It came with the territory, and she had long since been able to compartmentalize that aspect of her job, though she did go through an adjustment period when she first started seeing those patterns. It didn't mean her heart didn't break for the victims, but if she didn't have a coping mechanism she would have quit a long, long time ago. There was a time and place to process those emotions, and it just wasn't at work.
The problem was, as her older brother once pointed out, maybe she didn't take enough personal time to process a lot of it, either.
Maybe she needed a therapist.
"Hm?" She seemed to break out of her reverie, and she looked blankly at Erica for a moment while she processed the question she thought she heard. Hopefully she got it right. She didn't really want to go into detail about what she'd just been thinking about.
"Ah, before the portal I was just patrolling. Some agent came at me, and not knowing what was coming I ran. Right into a tear, through that same space we were just in, out another tear, and then literally into you."
Her phone pinged just then, and after glancing at it she said, "Five minutes. Pickup point is by the entrance so we should probably head– Oh! And she's got towels."

Erica nodded her head in acknowledgment. “I’m just glad you were able to get away from them, though a safer means of escape would be preferred.” She chuckled softly now that she was able to reflect back on the moment of impact. When Ekstrom literally knocked her off her feet. “I’m just teasing.”Unfortunately, other than going to her wonder she wasn’t sure of any other method Ekstrom could have used to get away. In most situations, it wasn’t always a viable option since it wasn’t something as instantaneous as an Agent’s, or Corrupt’s, teleports. As a Knight, they had to recite their oath which took a moment to recite, and a level of concentration that isn’t exactly possible when fleeing from an enemy as Mel was probably acutely aware of. “If the Uber driver is able to take me to my car then I’d be happy to take you home.” It was the least she could do given the kind of night Mel was having.

"Thank you," was her response to Erica's offer to give her a ride home. As much as she preferred to not inconvenience anyone around her, in her current state she wasn't exactly in a good position to refuse. They kept up a light conversation as they made the short trip to the entrance, the topic gradually wandering away from powered things to account for their soon-to-be company. Sure enough, by the time they got there, their Uber driver was just pulling up.
Their driver was lively and talkative, introduced herself as Leanne after hopping out of the car. She quickly grabbed a couple of towels she had in the trunk of her car, saying something about always being ready considering summer activities usually involved being in or around water as she handed them each one before opening the door for them. There were towels laid out on the seats as well, and inside was pleasantly cool, even in their dampened state of dress. It was a comfortable ride, full of small talk and interesting stories courtesy of their driver.
Mel gave a generous tip once they were at Erica's car and Leanne had zoomed off, likely to pick up her next fare.
"Nice lady," she said with a little chuckle before she turned her attention to Erica's car. Thankfully it was still there. No sign of the groceries though, which tugged hard at her conscience.

“Better company than a lot of people who end up in the car with me.” Erica agreed with a chuckle. Then again she’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who would be in a good mood after being put in handcuffs and put in the back of a police vehicle. Much to Erica’s un-surprise the second bag of groceries was not on the back of her car as she’d hoped it’d be. “At least nobody stole my car,” she commented just before she caught a glance of a brown paper back in the back seat. Good people do exist. she mused with a hum that extended into a half smile. Likely one of the people out gathering karts put it in there for her and kindly locked the doors. She’d have to figure out who the good samaritan was later. For now, she needed to drop Mel off and then get home since she had an early shift tomorrow. “Car’s unlocked,” Erica commented as she opened the driver's door and got in. With the key, she turned it on and wound down the windows to vent out the hot air. “Feel free to put your address in,” she motioned to the on-screen navigation. “Or if you’d rather tell me which way to go, I’m fine either way.”

"Oh, thank god," she said upon seeing the brown bag as well. The relief that came over her when the groceries were actually in the car was a breath of fresh air. Tonight felt like the universe's exercise in making her miserable, so it was nice to see that her misfortune hadn't fully extended to her friend.
Mel headed for the passenger side, cheerfulness gradually returning now that things seemed to be working out again. Once inside the car and presented options for navigating, she opted to input her information into the navigation. Admittedly, for all the time they'd known each other she was a little surprised they'd never been to each other's houses before.
To be fair to her, she didn't often invite anyone from work over, so maybe that was why.
"So," she said once the nav was ready. "How long have you been doing this knight thing?"
